  • Not only is the Douro valley the oldest wine-growing region, it’s also considered the most beautiful. Since 1756, a legal demarcation has defined where the grapes for port wine can be grown. Here in northern Portugal, the harvested grapes are still trampled underfoot. So it’s perfect for our reporter Hendrik Welling to explore this region, and to taste some of the world’s best port wines.

"There's no where else where foot treading is used to make wine in the world". Well, it's still done this way in my village in Uganda...

Hendrick being invited by the vineyard owner to trample grapes while both are wearing neatly pressed ironed and starched shirts sure looks fun and scary the same time. 🍇😅🍇 But sure DW got his dry cleaning bills covered for that assignment. #LaundryHazard

Its quite smooth today because of the dams that were built! When Rabelo boats were used to transport the Port wine, Douro river was a tricky river with lots of rapids.

The same companies are also involved in the "Port" documentary (dir. David Kennard), which features quite a few disturbing scenes. Examples:
    - during a ceremony/party, predominantly white men sing "British will never be slaves" while being served by visible minorities
    - workers were singing "liberdad" (liberty) while doing hard labor
    - the liberdad song also features rather sexist "pretty girls" lyrics (some of the girls appear to be too young to be working)
    - the workers, while toiling, were all wearing shirts with the company's logo like some kind of cattle after being tagged
    - the museum employee proudly and unabashedly presents sexist painting depicting objectification of women (the devil is trying to make a choice between wine or women)
    - the company executives attempt to paint a picture of down-to-earth "family business" but you know they're not part of many of the tedious processes when the camera is not rolling
    and so on..
I know winemaking is a wonderful tradition, but I believe certain aspects need to be updated

You might need an update on all that virtue signaling. Have a glass of wine and relax.

It just for show for tourists, people pay to go on this tours and do it like in the old days, it's like going on a Renaissance fair. Nowadays there are very advanced machinery that does it, the wine industry in Portugal is highly regulated.

Isso é porque temos tantos vinhos medalhados. Mas fiquei descansado, hoje é tudo automatizado mas o que vemos aqui é apenas uma tradição para os turistas.
