Appreciate this in depth review. I picked up the humble bundle deal bc at the very least I can use it to read through the rule books of the games it supports. My main hope is to use it for blades in the dark
Thanks for getting the word out. I've been using Alchemy for almost a year. I've used it for Shadow of the Demon Lord and nowy large library of Free League. My major quip is the character/universe slots availability on free vs paid acct. This will make using this as my primary VTT unlikely, especially if I want to host multiple games using the same players.
Thanks DaVe! And thanks for passing that along. I have the same problem but others have indicated they thought three free was plenty. I guess it just depends on where you are at. I just know I don’t like to delete anything if I can help it.
It's aimed at Theater of the Mind in that it focuses on atmosphere. Sure, you can do TotM games without any VTT, but now you have a platform that adds music, animated maps, etc.
I think I could get behind them being the most immersive, especially if you get the premium packages. Most of that other stuff you can get on foundry, but having it all packaged is nice and the UI looks the best for sure. And hopefully there is room for others in the space. I definitely want the competition as a consumer. And I bet they expand it over time as well, to cover most styles of play. That’s my guess at least. I think they may have wanted to start with a niche but with all the systems they are adding, they clearly seem interested in going wide.
@@homebrewedtabletop There's a lot of stuff you can do with Foundry or even FantasyGrounds, but it's square peg round hole rather than a medium that's actually built for it. I got the Free league Humble Bundle for Alchemy. It looks and control amazing. But the fact that players can only have 3 characters, the limited options when it comes to games systems and a monthly sub for 8 Dollars to get what you easily get for free with other vtt makes it a no go.

@@homebrewedtabletop Same here. Alchemy looks really pretty, but its bones don't stand out from what other VTTs offer, and I don't need an nth subscription in my life. So, I'm sticking with Foundry and Discord.
Even with a lot of the systems that Alchemy has out currently, they're not totally finished and some are missing features as well. Foundry has a more established team/fan base with a lot of devs who can solely focus on working on Nimble. Also, there are still lots of accessibility issues with Alchemy.
Thanks for dropping by! And yep, I agree on the first part. Lost me a bit on the second part. I’m not sure what you mean with accessibility, but would be curious to know.
Exactly. And you own your data, and can easily transfer it from one game to another. I’m a bit of a power user, but I still think the feature list is awesome and works well.
One of Alchemy's best features is its flexibility. As an example, if you wanted your players to have personal journals, you could simply create a custom item called Player Journal or whatever you like and place that in your game. Players can add it to their equipment list and then open it and edit it with markdown capabilities. Another approach would be to create a player container, called a module, where in you give them access and control. They can then create articles as journal notes and those could be shared among the whole party. There are lots of ways to get things done in Alchemy that I am discovering as I learn it better and that reminds me a lot of Foundry, but it's a lot simpler.
Oh that’s cool, I didn’t think of that as a workaround, or maybe they didn’t have it at time of testing? Either way cool to see. Thanks for passing on the info!

This is a great video and overview, one of the few thorough rundowns of Alchemy. I also really appreciated that even though a subscription (though it really seems like an option, I'm not sure how many GMs are running more than 3 games at a time), is a dealbreaker for you, you have a super balanced pros and cons. One thing that irked a little bit is every time you said, "This is an easy fix". As a software developer, that's often hard to hear, as we don't know what's easy or hard for them, and if it is in fact hard (or just lower priority), and it's framed as an easy fix and doesn't get done, it can make the dev look lazy or not listening to feedback. I think it's maybe better to just note the things you do or don't like, and if they are minor or major issues for you, the dev can be left to see if it's an "easy" fix.
Thanks, I appreciate it, and also the feedback. I’ll keep that in mind for the future. For what it’s worth, most (maybe all?) of the UI stuff I talked about I literally just mean turning two button presses into one, hover over menus, menus not being locked in place, etc… nothing crazy at all and things I’m 100% sure they can do. But again, a point well taken.
That is a great analysis, thanks ! I really want to use Alchemy for my games but it lacks the one thing that becomes a huge dealbreaker : localization. @homebrewedtabletop I've used DNDBeyond's map tool and it's fog of war works like this one here.
I've also used Foundry. Foundry is amazing when the maps are walled and set up, but I don't have time in my life to spend building them to function.
I pay a monthly sub to Beneos maps for access to their Curse of Strahd maps and it's been a life saver.
I'm good with a lower tech fog of war if I can get the prep done quickly
Thanks for the review!
