As crazy as it may seem, the truce actually happened. In many cases the soldiers even ignored orders from their Generals in order to pass their Christmas peacefully. You can look it up, there are hundreds of letters from soldiers about the truce, diaries and even photos. And of course there is the Sabaton History Channel that does a fantastic job at explaining the context behind the song. Nice reaction!

@@grabble7605 After the truce men were relocated or even pulled from the front completely cause they refused to fight. Others were court martialled for trying to do the same thing next year, while at some sectors the truce lasted for so many days that the generals had to order snipers and artillery barrages to break the truces.
Its nice to think with romanticism "how good it would have been if the war ended cause of the truce" but thats not the case. there were nationalists on both sides who were against any fraternization while both the political and military leadership were openly hostile to the event, to the point were they tried to censor its existence entirely. In short, the fighting started again cause the common soldiery was forbidden from not doing so. But no one can take that truce from the men that participated in it

According to Joakim Broden (lead singer and song writer) this is actually a waltz the way it is structured. If you want to hear an absolute banger from Sabaton, try the live version of "Ghost Division" from the Woodstock Poland concert. 550K+ Poles freaking out. But there are no bad Sabaton songs, plus you get a free history lesson. Great reaction, and keep rocking.
BTW, they have a video on their channel that shows making this video. And Joakim started as the keyboard player. the band had no lead singer and asked him to fill in until they found one. As he says, "They never did. lazy bastards."

On Dec 24th 1914 roughly 9--11pm GMT across the miles of trenches. Tannebaum trees with lit candles lined the German trenches. The French, British, Austrailian, and Scottish troops opposing them were drinking and eating well with gifts from home. The Germans were doing the same.
Spontaneously different sectors started to sing carols. One thing led to another and the opposing armies sung back and forth or yelled greetings filled with a bit of good natured ribbing and some others with holiday cheer. It's not certain where but someone along the lines decided to go over the top and offer an unofficial truce for the holiday.
Keep in mind this is happening unplanned, unsanctioned, and randomly throughout the lines going south of the English channel. Some 475 miles from the Channel to the Neutral Swiss Alps.
In some places the truce lasted for only a few hours in others it lasted a week. Figgy pudding, Fruitcake, chocolate, alcohol, cigarettes, cigars, ribbons, and much more were exchanged during this, in the grand scheme of things, short time. Football (Soccer) matches sprung up in varying sectors and more than one had a Christmas mass. All the while the dead still littering the battlefield were buried as best they could in the frozen earth.
The line, "Silence, Oh I remember the silence." is, iirc, a line from one of the English diaries recounting the event of Christmas day. No artillery, no gunfire, no shelling, shouting, whistles, or hissing of smoke. Some areas later recalled hearing birds for the first time in months. This song describes possibly the most human experiences ever to happen in war.
Please watch the Sabaton History video about this song. Even if you don't post it, it is an, in my opinion, necessary tag along to this video.

    • @ragulper
      @ragulper Рік тому

This is not the whole story. Fraternization over the lines had happened for months. The soldiers were so close to each other that they could shout over No Mans Land and had started to share soccer results and play music to each other. There had already been instances before of people crossing the line to visit. Also, the Pope had called for a truce beforehand and near Belgium, a truce had been planned beforehand so Belgian soldiers could sent the letters to their families in German occupied Belgium.
But otherwise, all small truces were negotiated individually against the explicit orders from command. Absolutely bonkers.

If you want an awesome one with sabaton you should give en livstid i krig (a life time of war) live Scandinavium Gothenburg 2020 a go. It is the Swedish version of the song (the album Carolus rex was about Swedish history during the era of great power or as it is called here, stormaktstiden) so make sure to turn the subtitles on. I went down late in the day on the 24th, struck in the engine I could not press on. My crate nosed over into shell hole, I came to much later. I could do nothing but hide, the madness of no-mans land reigns terror on those caught in it. Darkness fell, and an eternity lay before me as I plotted my way out. But something happened that night, a soul deafening silence fell upon the front, followed soon by a single voice in song. Not believing what I was hearing, I peered over the mangled wings covering my hole. I saw a single man, standing above the trenches, hands behind his back, singing as though his humanity depended on it. It filled me with a chill the night and snow could not give. Then more of his comrades stood to join him, and they walked onward, slowly and un-armed. I heard a heavy Scottish voice say; "Are ye a'right lad?". A highlander with his pipes was standing aside my hole, his hand extended. Without a thought, I responded: "Shaken, but not dead."
    "It's Christmas, Lad. C'mon."
I stood, and took his hand for help from the hole. Around me I saw what could be described as a wonderous occasion. Men of all sides stood in the desolation, talking in what tongues they knew as though there was no war. There was no hate, no blood, no malice, only cordial respect and humanity. I wondered then, what we were fighting these men for. It struck me then, that each of us had a job to do, but tonight we all refused to do that job and simply be human. The voices rose again in song, and the piper played as we walked to the gathering. I couldn't help but feel that there was hope for us afterall, that we are all the same, no matter our uniforms, our rifles, or our futures. Tonight is Christmas, tonight we sing.
    -Manfred von Schreiber.

Manfred was a trip. He seemed like a hero to a little kid, even if his own admission was being on the losing side. That old guy could make even a u-controll do what it wasn't designed to do.
Rest well old friend, and I hope I can be as human.
