My Aunt grew up in the 70’s and hitchhiked. She had a few stories, but this one really stuck with me. She was hitchhiking with her friend, a guy pulled over and my aunt got in the back, friend in the front. The driver had a notepad and wrote that he was deaf and mute and to please write down where they needed to go. All seemed fine, until dude drives past their stop. The friend starts yelling “that was our stop, you passed our stop!” He keeps driving and motioning that he can’t speak and can’t hear her. My aunt in the backseat doesn’t even know what’s going on. Friend in the front OPENS the door of the car, while they were still driving and that was when the driver yells “OK, OK I’m stoping!” Creep could hear the entire time. And we’ll never know what his real plan was.

I'm in rural Ireland, went to school ' in the local town and left school early one day and thumbed (hitch hiked) home. I was about 14. The minute i got into that car i felt so uneasy!! He was a man probably in his 50s, asked where i was going and told him. Nearing for the turn for my village (he was heading straight) he said i could go with him and he'd be driving through my village a bit later. I told him thanks very much but my mother was coming to collect me at the crossroad so he let me out. I thanked him and i never felt such a huge sense of relief to get out of that car! I swore I'd never do it again and i didn't
we were blessed to grow up then and these after school specials were wonderful...they were on in the 7O's and 8O's...those were the good old days...tv is NOT the same and this quality...and they sure DON'T want to SAVE anybody anymore
This happened to me. He wouldn’t let me out. After me crying and begging he pulled over and let me out. He told me he was teaching me a lesson. I learned that lesson well, I never hitched again.
Yep. I watch the show I Survived and a few of the episodes have people that have been attacked,raped and almost killed. There was a woman who got both arms cut off by the guy she got into the car with. The movie The Hitcher was scary too. You never know who the person is you pick up.
My friends and I used to hitchhike, as teenagers, in the 80s. It's amazing the things we used to do and that we are still alive to talk about it. We took risks every day. Life was different back then, but I still think we got lucky. We wouldn't hitchhike too far. Maybe about 2 miles from our street to the mall or something, but still so crazy.
I use to knock a strangers doors and ask them do they have any work I can do to earn some money. I was only a 9 year old girl. I'm so thankful that I am here to even tell this story. There could of been a home I never would have made it out of. 😢
My best friend and I used to hitchike between Stinson Beach and Bolinas, California in the nineties. We were teenagers. Once, we got into a van with some hippie dippie dude who started telling us about how he had picked up a woman earlier that day who had threatened HIS life. Another time, we got into a car that had the backseat ripped out, so we had to share the front seat.
I hitchhiked in the 80s ONE TIME to work at 17. Very good looking young man with a nice new truck. He asked me if it was ok if he mast*batted. I screamed No! He said, ok ok GEEZ thankfully he let me out. I was shaking so bad for hours as I’m pretty sure he was def gonna ra*e and kill me. I couldn’t work. This time I got a ride back home.

The book " Did You Hear What Happened To Andrea"? is better. I was raped as a young teen.......My Therapist wanted me to read the book. It helped me A LOT. I first thought I had done something to deserve what had happened. It took me a while to figure out that I had done NOTHING wrong. I'm now a rape counselor. I'd like to let others that have been trough this know that you are not alone. You CAN( & should) find someone to talk about how you're feeling. Many years ago, when I was 15, I hitchhiked and was driven many miles away from my home and nearly raped myself... Luckily for me, I had a sense about things and managed to beat the hell out of the guy as he started to pull off the road and I managed to get away. I knew if I didn't start fighting while he was still trying to drive, I didn't stand much of a chance... You couldn't pay me to hitchhike ever again, especially not in this country today. I agree with those saying they miss the after school specials. I think they were good. I always pass such lessons onto youth I work with, my daughter, niece and nephew. It’s always important to be mindful of such things.
In the 70's. A classmate and I were hitchhiking to Boston. A famous band, Emerson, lake, and Palmer picked us up with their tour bus. To this day, I have their autographs!!😊

You never forget something like this. It is super scary. I never got in a car with a stranger. But one day I was walking to a bus stop for school. I was a teenager. A man pulled off the road and grabbed for me while making a mean face and a growling sound. I was at my grandmothers. I ran back to her house and told her what happened. She didnt believe me and accused me of trying to get out of going to school. Told me to go to the bus stop. It was awful, but the worse thing was that no one believed me or tried to protect me! I dont think about it much because it was decades ago, but Ive never forgot what happened or that face.
I had that happen as well while walking to school in Paris, France. My sister was ashamed of being seen with me and told me not to walk with her while she walked ahead giggling with her friend. I was 12 but looked about 10 years old. I was so skinny that I managed to wriggle free and run ahead to rejoin my sis and her friend. My sis chastised me for walking with her. I told my parents when I got home from school & they disciplined her for that. The memory definitely stays with you.

The lovely Michele Green of "L A Law" fame. I grew up in this era and these films were the best. Life was so simple then, wish we could go back. Ted Bundy got a lot of his victims this way. The one thing that always stuck in my head from my mother was her saying, never hitchhike and never pick up a hitch hiking stranger. I don't care if it's a man or a woman hitchhiking, especially these days with all the set ups by using women to make other women feel safe.
Ted bundy tried to pick up my mom in the 70's. Luckily her intuition was on point and she refused to "help" him with his car. He said it wasn't working and she thought why the hell ask a teenage girl about a car.
About twenty two years ago I was in the carecwith my 10 yo son. My cat broke down. A “nice” guy offered us a lift. As soon as I said no this guy went off his head, shouting and cursing at me. I’ve no doubt that had we got in that car it would have ended in a shallow grave

I was born in 73' I remember when hitch hiking was a common thing no one gave a second thought about. These after school special in the 80s where very effective at ending that era. The 80s where the end of Naive safe, carefree American life.
Once I was at the store and someone wanted to take me home I told him I already had a ride. Then again I was done shopping and a truck stopped and I was offered a ride home, I told the driver no. Never can tell who's a traffiker and who isnt these days.

It is 2019 and my parents are exactly the same I am going through a marriage breakdown and not once have they mentioned it or asked me how I am, it is terrible my husband makes my life a misery and I have no support whatsoever

I remember seeing a show about her recently and how she is thriving as a Mom and an artist. She finally sought professional counseling to help her deal with the trauma and all the nightmares. True survivor.
A lot of women back then were like this. Women were blamed for everything back then- even getting cheated on was their fault; so they were always afraid for others to find out about anything going wrong in their family or with themselves.

The only time I tried to hitch a ride our stupid PE teacher made us run to the pool which was 7 blocks from our school barefoot on hot asphalt. My best friend and I decided to try and catch a ride as a couple other girls had done. My mom drove by. Us two girls got a ride & a tongue lashing. I never tried to hitchhike again.
queen bee I wouldn’t say its the victims FAULT, but there is a degree of culpability that the victim needs to accept, so they can learn from it. A long time ago I was hitchhiking (I only did that 2-3 times at all) - and there was a young man who stoped his car to pick me up - we were talking about a few things, and then he asked me if somebody would wait for me at home....I did not think at all, and said no - nobody is waiting for me at home.....he said to me I never should say that, because if he would be a eventual rapist etc. he now would have all time in the world to do me any harm. .....He opened my eyes ....thinking back I really think he picked me up on purpose to save me from harm or worse things and to talk to me and tell me the dangers of hitchhiking.... After he let me out at my home save I never ever hitchhiked again - made my driving license and now I drive my car. But tell me what to do if there are no trains, no buses anymore? Stay at home? Walk back home?......back then not many young people had their own cars or someone driving them.....anywhere they wanted to. So the easiest thing to do was hitchhiking. We have a very famous criminal show that shows the criminal cases in form of short movies of the crime. It started 1967 since now, and is called Aktenzeichen XY ungelöst. And the maker of these program showed that criminal cases in TV and talked about them. His name was Eduard Zimmermann - called Ede.....he always warned about hitchhiking - no matter if you are alone, with friends or 2-3 girls - never, never hitchhike you may pay a very high price. And back then there were a lot of murder cases caused by hitchhiking.....so sad
Never hitch hike or take rides from people who seem sketchy! My mom sent my uncle to pick me up from a friend's house when I was 14. My uncle pulled over and pulled a knife out on me and said "take off your clothes!" I thought fast and pretended like I was going to and with the other hand unlocked the door and jumped out and ran. He sped off and went to Mexico. He had sex with a 15yr old prostitute and got tb and died a agonizing death. In his funeral, I was going to spit on his body but someone beat me to it.
At age 13 i was riding my bike and a man stop his car /call me to come over! something kick in and i drove as fast as i could home... told my mom/ she was proud that i didnt went to him then i got punish for driving my bike without my brother... lesson learned. it can happened to anyone whether u hitching or not... please b careful...
Yvette G I was in 3rd grade.... my sister in 1st. Walking home from school in the 70’s a man stopped his car asking for directions. He had his penis out of his pants. We ran all the way home. We never told our mom till years later and we were adults. I don’t care what people say..... it was not safer back then. Another thing..... a 12 year old girl went missing in our small community. Her body was found in a cornfield on the farm next to ours.
You were lucky because that reminded me of the little girl Amber Hagerman which Amber alert is named after. She was riding her bike and was snatched by someone in a car and murdered. Though it of course could have been totally harmless too but you never know but so many evil, sick percerts out there.

I can't even count the times when I was a teenager I had nasty old creepy guys flash me or rub up against me in a crowded bus. One guy we called the old fart was always hanging around our school jiggling his pants when we had to walk by him. I had some stranger sitting next to me actually put his hand right on my private parts in a movie theater. When I started yelling he got up and ran out of the theater. You have to be watching out for yourself all the time when you are a girl. Hitching a ride was one thing I never did.
Remember when people actually hitch-hiked in relative safety? Guys in the service did it all the time. It was considered an honor to give a lift to a serviceman during WWII and Korea. My Dad did it lots of times between Lakehurst and Queens until he got deployed. By 1974, however, it was definitely not a good idea, especially for a woman.
I’m 75, so I do remember those days. My boyfriend...who became my husband, hitch-hiked to my town on a regular basis, and I remember service men hitch-hiking. It has always been safer for males..but not every time. Girls should never hitch-hike.. You never have any idea if whose car you are get into. Way too dangerous..

My boyfriend and I hitched a lift in a truck in Italy and my smattering of Italian made me realise that the 2 truckers were arguing over which one of them was going to "have" me first. I clutched my stomach and started to groan and cry - and I shouted "Bambino Bambino" - the brakes were on so damn fast and we practically got thrown out of that truck. Quick thinking on my part. Hitch-hiking is even more dangerous these days.
In the book after Andrea had been raped, her mom was worried that Andrea would be seen as a promiscuous girl. Her dad was constantly angry. She actually yells and swears at her mom! Keep in mind that the book was published in 1979 and it took place the same year!

I have never hitchhiked but when I was about6or7(1972/1973)I was with my dad and it was a Saturday afternoon and he needed to stop at the the bank as that was the day he paid cheques in and got his money out for the week ahead and as parents did at the time he left me in the car and I watched him cross the busy street and head up the steps. As he went in the building he passed a man who looked like he lived on the street. He had a dirty long coat on over raggedy trousers and I've always had weird feelings that often come true and this man just reminded me of the public information films about not talking to strangers and I saw the man cross the street and head towards me and I just started sweating and my stomach literally felt like it was touching my toes. I slid a cross the seat and locked the car door on my dad's side and as I got back in my seat the man was grabbing the door handle and banging on the window to let him in. I was in tears in the front seat and he even tried the rear car door which thank god was locked. It seemed to last forever him attempting to open the car door but was probably no more than45secs to a minute if that but was truly terrifying and I know if he could of got in even though it was still mid to late afternoon and people were about it would not of ended well for me. He suddenly stopped banging on the door and pointed at me as he stared. He left as quickly as he appeared and I remember being totaly numb and unable to speak and I was, actually scared to tell my dad. We drove to my grans and I told them after an hour or so and I had never seen my dad so angry and he was never violent but he was yelling that he would kill the man if he was caught. I think he did report it to the police. I've not thought of this in so many years but this story bought it all back. I can still see the man's face and dirty grey hair and the long flasher mac's that type of coat was known as.There was no cctv in those days and pretty much every kid was left in the car if the parent was doing a quick errand. I would never leave my kid in the car when I just paid for fuel. Its sort of sad how diligent you have to be as a parent these days.

I know if it wasn't for the public information films I had seen and the esp I had I probably would have died that day if I hadn't of locked the cardoors.
I was stuck on the side of the road in 1998 in the middle of the country. Luckily my car was broke down by 2 homes. I put my hood up and wouldn’t go to any of the homes. I didn’t know what kind of people lived there. And would not flag down any cars, as it scared me. But deputies and state highway patrol drove by and would not stop. Finally someone called the police and they stopped. They are the only ones I’d go with. Had my car towed to the town I lived in and got back safely.

I’ve done rideshare all over the world from cabbies to Uber to Lyft and it wasn’t until recently that I was in a position with a driver that terrified me. I was in the vehicle with my adult daughter and her boyfriend and my teenage son. Thankfully, my daughter and I started to communicate through text message to each other because we both had the same dread and all I wanted to do was get out of that vehicle. she and I made up a scenario without even discussing it with each other that she was sick and we needed to stop at a super Walmart to get medication. The driver was irked because it was fare that we were cutting very short. But I remembered what my father always told me if you have that gut instinct to get out of the situation no matter what if someone’s feelings are hurt or they are angry. Just do whatever you can to get out of the situation. In my 47 yearsI had never had such a distinct punch in the gut warning reaction. Once we got inside of Walmart, my daughter and I hugged and said we couldn’t believe how instinctually we both had played together to get us out of that situation. Her boyfriend and my son were amazed. They said we deserved an Oscar bc they totally thought she was actually sick and had no idea we were putting on a show to get out of the vehicle, but the other thing they said is they were both uncomfortable and had bad vibes from the guy as well and couldn’t believe we were able to get us out of that situation. The only regret I have is that I didn’t report it to Uber because I was scared the guy would find out somehow it was me. He scared me that much. A few days later, a little 12-year-old girl was raped and killed in our area and the surveillance footage looked just like that driver, thankfully, as we zoomed in and more photos were released, we realized he was too young, but it scared all of us because we naturally thought that it was our Uber driver..
But the app is connected to a company so there is major responsibility there on the part of the driver in connection with being obviously linked to crimes.
Hitchhiking is definitely a thing of the past and even in the 70s when me and a few of my girlfriends would do it, it was taking a chance but because we always hitched together and never alone did make a big difference. I would not suggest hitching in 2019 together or alone these syco are creative on all types of weirdness .

Just started my vintage tv movie binge last night. Even though I know by the title of the movie that it’s something tragic that happens I love these movies. She reminds me in a way of Jennifer Love Hewitt.
It wasn’t unusual to hear about someone hitchhiking back in those days altho’ I never did it myself. I don’t recall the details but I heard in the news long ago about some young women who survived an attack after hitchhiking but ended up losing both her arms 💔
I'm sorry, but I just can't understand how the mother can be so cruel and ignorant to say; " I hope they never find him" 😠😠 and worst!! Tellling her daugther not to say anything to her little brother!! My God 😒!

My Aunt grew up in the 70’s and hitchhiked. She had a few stories, but this one really stuck with me. She was hitchhiking with her friend, a guy pulled over and my aunt got in the back, friend in the front. The driver had a notepad and wrote that he was deaf and mute and to please write down where they needed to go. All seemed fine, until dude drives past their stop. The friend starts yelling “that was our stop, you passed our stop!” He keeps driving and motioning that he can’t speak and can’t hear her. My aunt in the backseat doesn’t even know what’s going on. Friend in the front OPENS the door of the car, while they were still driving and that was when the driver yells “OK, OK I’m stoping!” Creep could hear the entire time. And we’ll never know what his real plan was.

I'm in rural Ireland, went to school ' in the local town and left school early one day and thumbed (hitch hiked) home. I was about 14. The minute i got into that car i felt so uneasy!! He was a man probably in his 50s, asked where i was going and told him. Nearing for the turn for my village (he was heading straight) he said i could go with him and he'd be driving through my village a bit later. I told him thanks very much but my mother was coming to collect me at the crossroad so he let me out. I thanked him and i never felt such a huge sense of relief to get out of that car! I swore I'd never do it again and i didn't

Yep. I watch the show I Survived and a few of the episodes have people that have been attacked,raped and almost killed. There was a woman who got both arms cut off by the guy she got into the car with. The movie The Hitcher was scary too. You never know who the person is you pick up.

My friends and I used to hitchhike, as teenagers, in the 80s. It's amazing the things we used to do and that we are still alive to talk about it. We took risks every day. Life was different back then, but I still think we got lucky. We wouldn't hitchhike too far. Maybe about 2 miles from our street to the mall or something, but still so crazy.

I use to knock a strangers doors and ask them do they have any work I can do to earn some money. I was only a 9 year old girl. I'm so thankful that I am here to even tell this story. There could of been a home I never would have made it out of. 😢

My best friend and I used to hitchike between Stinson Beach and Bolinas, California in the nineties. We were teenagers. Once, we got into a van with some hippie dippie dude who started telling us about how he had picked up a woman earlier that day who had threatened HIS life. Another time, we got into a car that had the backseat ripped out, so we had to share the front seat.
I hitchhiked in the 80s ONE TIME to work at 17. Very good looking young man with a nice new truck. He asked me if it was ok if he mast*batted.
I screamed No! He said, ok ok GEEZ
thankfully he let me out. I was shaking so bad for hours as I’m pretty sure he was def gonna ra*e and kill me. I couldn’t work. This time I got a ride back home.
And now with Uber we basically hitch hike with strangers all the time 🤷🏼♀️
With Uber you know who's picking you up, and the drivers know who they're picking up. So I imagine it's quite safe.

The book " Did You Hear What Happened To Andrea"? is better. I was raped as a young teen.......My Therapist wanted me to read the book. It helped me A LOT. I first thought I had done something to deserve what had happened. It took me a while to figure out that I had done NOTHING wrong. I'm now a rape counselor. I'd like to let others that have been trough this know that you are not alone. You CAN( & should) find someone to talk about how you're feeling. Many years ago, when I was 15, I hitchhiked and was driven many miles away from my home and nearly raped myself... Luckily for me, I had a sense about things and managed to beat the hell out of the guy as he started to pull off the road and I managed to get away. I knew if I didn't start fighting while he was still trying to drive, I didn't stand much of a chance... You couldn't pay me to hitchhike ever again, especially not in this country today. I agree with those saying they miss the after school specials. I think they were good. I always pass such lessons onto youth I work with, my daughter, niece and nephew. It’s always important to be mindful of such things.
In the 70's. A classmate and I were hitchhiking to Boston. A famous band, Emerson, lake, and Palmer picked us up with their tour bus. To this day, I have their autographs!!😊

You never forget something like this. It is super scary. I never got in a car with a stranger. But one day I was walking to a bus stop for school. I was a teenager. A man pulled off the road and grabbed for me while making a mean face and a growling sound. I was at my grandmothers. I ran back to her house and told her what happened. She didnt believe me and accused me of trying to get out of going to school. Told me to go to the bus stop. It was awful, but the worse thing was that no one believed me or tried to protect me! I dont think about it much because it was decades ago, but Ive never forgot what happened or that face.

I had that happen as well while walking to school in Paris, France. My sister was ashamed of being seen with me and told me not to walk with her while she walked ahead giggling with her friend. I was 12 but looked about 10 years old. I was so skinny that I managed to wriggle free and run ahead to rejoin my sis and her friend. My sis chastised me for walking with her. I told my parents when I got home from school & they disciplined her for that. The memory definitely stays with you.

The parents handled it just like parents in those days did. Kids took the blame for everything. It was the way it was. Michele is 61 years old now 16/09/23.

About twenty two years ago I was in the carecwith my 10 yo son. My cat broke down. A “nice” guy offered us a lift. As soon as I said no this guy went off his head, shouting and cursing at me. I’ve no doubt that had we got in that car it would have ended in a shallow grave

Unfortunately women are too naive and gullible so yeah the father and cop have every right to be pissed and fed up with women's poor decision making. So quit saying that women are treated badly, lol. Hitchhiking may have been a thing of the 70s and 80s but those who did it, fucked with their safety and deserve to be roughed up verbally, hopefully lesson learned.
The only time I tried to hitch a ride our stupid PE teacher made us run to the pool which was 7 blocks from our school barefoot on hot asphalt. My best friend and I decided to try and catch a ride as a couple other girls had done. My mom drove by. Us two girls got a ride & a tongue lashing. I never tried to hitchhike again.
The victim does not need your anger or to be repremanded , they need love and understanding .
She has enough to cope with, her parents need to be understanding than judging. Save it for the perp who did this.

A long time ago I was hitchhiking (I only did that 2-3 times at all) - and there was a young man who stoped his car to pick me up - we were talking about a few things, and then he asked me if somebody would wait for me at home....I did not think at all, and said no - nobody is waiting for me at home.....he said to me I never should say that, because if he would be a eventual rapist etc. he now would have all time in the world to do me any harm. .....He opened my eyes ....thinking back I really think he picked me up on purpose to save me from harm or worse things and to talk to me and tell me the dangers of hitchhiking.... After he let me out at my home save I never ever hitchhiked again - made my driving license and now I drive my car. But tell me what to do if there are no trains, no buses anymore? Stay at home? Walk back home?......back then not many young people had their own cars or someone driving them.....anywhere they wanted to. So the easiest thing to do was hitchhiking. We have a very famous criminal show that shows the criminal cases in form of short movies of the crime. It started 1967 since now, and is called Aktenzeichen XY ungelöst. And the maker of these program showed that criminal cases in TV and talked about them. His name was Eduard Zimmermann - called Ede.....he always warned about hitchhiking - no matter if you are alone, with friends or 2-3 girls - never, never hitchhike you may pay a very high price. And back then there were a lot of murder cases caused by hitchhiking.....so sad
Never hitch hike or take rides from people who seem sketchy! My mom sent my uncle to pick me up from a friend's house when I was 14. My uncle pulled over and pulled a knife out on me and said "take off your clothes!" I thought fast and pretended like I was going to and with the other hand unlocked the door and jumped out and ran. He sped off and went to Mexico. He had sex with a 15yr old prostitute and got tb and died a agonizing death. In his funeral, I was going to spit on his body but someone beat me to it.

At age 13 i was riding my bike and a man stop his car /call me to come over! something kick in and i drove as fast as i could home... told my mom/ she was proud that i didnt went to him then i got punish for driving my bike without my brother... lesson learned. it can happened to anyone whether u hitching or not... please b careful...
Yvette G I was in 3rd grade.... my sister in 1st. Walking home from school in the 70’s a man stopped his car asking for directions. He had his penis out of his pants. We ran all the way home. We never told our mom till years later and we were adults. I don’t care what people say..... it was not safer back then.
Another thing..... a 12 year old girl went missing in our small community. Her body was found in a cornfield on the farm next to ours.
You were lucky because that reminded me of the little girl Amber Hagerman which Amber alert is named after. She was riding her bike and was snatched by someone in a car and murdered. Though it of course could have been totally harmless too but you never know but so many evil, sick percerts out there.

I can't even count the times when I was a teenager I had nasty old creepy guys flash me or rub up against me in a crowded bus. One guy we called the old fart was always hanging around our school jiggling his pants when we had to walk by him. I had some stranger sitting next to me actually put his hand right on my private parts in a movie theater. When I started yelling he got up and ran out of the theater. You have to be watching out for yourself all the time when you are a girl. Hitching a ride was one thing I never did.
Remember when people actually hitch-hiked in relative safety? Guys in the service did it all the time. It was considered an honor to give a lift to a serviceman during WWII and Korea. My Dad did it lots of times between Lakehurst and Queens until he got deployed. By 1974, however, it was definitely not a good idea, especially for a woman.
I’m 75, so I do remember those days. My boyfriend...who became my husband, hitch-hiked to my town on a regular basis, and I remember service men hitch-hiking. It has always been safer for males..but not every time.
Girls should never hitch-hike.. You never have any idea if whose car you are get into. Way too dangerous..

My boyfriend and I hitched a lift in a truck in Italy and my smattering of Italian made me realise that the 2 truckers were arguing over which one of them was going to "have" me first. I clutched my stomach and started to groan and cry - and I shouted "Bambino Bambino" - the brakes were on so damn fast and we practically got thrown out of that truck. Quick thinking on my part. Hitch-hiking is even more dangerous these days.

I have never hitchhiked but when I was about6or7(1972/1973)I was with my dad and it was a Saturday afternoon and he needed to stop at the the bank as that was the day he paid cheques in and got his money out for the week ahead and as parents did at the time he left me in the car and I watched him cross the busy street and head up the steps. As he went in the building he passed a man who looked like he lived on the street. He had a dirty long coat on over raggedy trousers and I've always had weird feelings that often come true and this man just reminded me of the public information films about not talking to strangers and I saw the man cross the street and head towards me and I just started sweating and my stomach literally felt like it was touching my toes. I slid a cross the seat and locked the car door on my dad's side and as I got back in my seat the man was grabbing the door handle and banging on the window to let him in. I was in tears in the front seat and he even tried the rear car door which thank god was locked. It seemed to last forever him attempting to open the car door but was probably no more than45secs to a minute if that but was truly terrifying and I know if he could of got in even though it was still mid to late afternoon and people were about it would not of ended well for me. He suddenly stopped banging on the door and pointed at me as he stared. He left as quickly as he appeared and I remember being totaly numb and unable to speak and I was, actually scared to tell my dad. We drove to my grans and I told them after an hour or so and I had never seen my dad so angry and he was never violent but he was yelling that he would kill the man if he was caught. I think he did report it to the police. I've not thought of this in so many years but this story bought it all back. I can still see the man's face and dirty grey hair and the long flasher mac's that type of coat was known as.There was no cctv in those days and pretty much every kid was left in the car if the parent was doing a quick errand. I would never leave my kid in the car when I just paid for fuel. Its sort of sad how diligent you have to be as a parent these days.

I never used to hitch BUT, I'm an old lady, lived in a small town and I rode with anyone who offered and they were always kind!!!
I was stuck on the side of the road in 1998 in the middle of the country. Luckily my car was broke down by 2 homes. I put my hood up and wouldn’t go to any of the homes. I didn’t know what kind of people lived there. And would not flag down any cars, as it scared me. But deputies and state highway patrol drove by and would not stop. Finally someone called the police and they stopped. They are the only ones I’d go with. Had my car towed to the town I lived in and got back safely.

I’ve done rideshare all over the world from cabbies to Uber to Lyft and it wasn’t until recently that I was in a position with a driver that terrified me. I was in the vehicle with my adult daughter and her boyfriend and my teenage son. Thankfully, my daughter and I started to communicate through text message to each other because we both had the same dread and all I wanted to do was get out of that vehicle. she and I made up a scenario without even discussing it with each other that she was sick and we needed to stop at a super Walmart to get medication. The driver was irked because it was fare that we were cutting very short. But I remembered what my father always told me if you have that gut instinct to get out of the situation no matter what if someone’s feelings are hurt or they are angry. Just do whatever you can to get out of the situation. In my 47 yearsI had never had such a distinct punch in the gut warning reaction. Once we got inside of Walmart, my daughter and I hugged and said we couldn’t believe how instinctually we both had played together to get us out of that situation. Her boyfriend and my son were amazed. They said we deserved an Oscar bc they totally thought she was actually sick and had no idea we were putting on a show to get out of the vehicle, but the other thing they said is they were both uncomfortable and had bad vibes from the guy as well and couldn’t believe we were able to get us out of that situation. The only regret I have is that I didn’t report it to Uber because I was scared the guy would find out somehow it was me. He scared me that much. A few days later, a little 12-year-old girl was raped and killed in our area and the surveillance footage looked just like that driver, thankfully, as we zoomed in and more photos were released, we realized he was too young, but it scared all of us because we naturally thought that it was our Uber driver..
But the app is connected to a company so there is major responsibility there on the part of the driver in connection with being obviously linked to crimes.

Hitchhiking is definitely a thing of the past and even in the 70s when me and a few of my girlfriends would do it, it was taking a chance but because we always hitched together and never alone did make a big difference. I would not suggest hitching in 2019 together or alone these syco are creative on all types of weirdness .
Its dangerous even if you do it with a group of friends bc you never know how many others are waiting at the place you're being driven to!

It wasn’t unusual to hear about someone hitchhiking back in those days altho’ I never did it myself. I don’t recall the details but I heard in the news long ago about some young women who survived an attack after hitchhiking but ended up losing both her arms 💔
