- Her mother's drunkenness turns Cindy's life into a nightmare, a misery almost unbroken until Cindy finds solace in a organization for children of alcoholic parents (Alateen). Explores painfully and tenderly the complex feelings of a teenage girl trying to deal with her mother's alcoholism and the anger and guilt she feels over her mother's condition. The ending offers what life offers all of us, hope without an easy resolution.
I would come home from school do homework and watch an after school special these are the little things that make me wish i was a kid again that and saturday cartoons and soul train😄👍

This movie really hit home for me. I grew up with an alcoholic father who I ended up having to take care of because he was unable to take care of himself due to his being drunk or going through withdraws all the time. I ended becoming an alcoholic myself. I am in recovery now by the grace of God.
I have the same story as you. But fortunately I didn't drink. I don't know you but I'm proud of you ❤️. Stay strong 💪

My husband was an alcoholic. There were countless beer cans and champagne bottles all over the house. He died of liver cirrohsis in 1997. We were only married seven and a half years. Never really dated after that. I had my daughter Victoria to raise. Today she's a fine young lady.

I myself was an alcoholic for many years I was homeless on drugs and I just didn't care about nothing or no one however one day I decided to get my life together now I am alcohol free drug free I've been sober now 11 years I give all the praise and glory and honor to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

I remember watching these after school. I wish they'd bring these types of movies back. Today's youth could really learn something.
I really don’t think many kids would watch them. Most kids these days don’t watch much tv. Too busy with their gaming boxes and getting into trouble.
Or... parents and teachers could actually talk to kids and not have to rely on TV to teach them how to live their lives.
I was raised by alcoholics, I’m in my 50s and I still feel traumatized.

This was spot-on. I was a teen with alcoholic parents in the early 80s. This movie got everything exactly right. I wish they'd had Alateen at my school.

Our house was cleaned with 4 kids. We knew if it wasnt, my alcoholic father would rage, take it out mostly on my mom, but us too. We did whatever we could to keep the peace. Of course, it really never mattered, there would be a reason to go off no matter what we did.
My dad is and was an alcoholic my whole life, if I had of joined something like alateen in high school, both my parents would’ve killed me by embarrassment! Not that they minded embarrassing me
This really helped me come to some unresolved feelings about my dad. I'm 46, and he died 3 years ago. I still needed this movie.

These after school specials touched on the topics that are forbidden to be discussed in many schools today.
The old man used to pass out in the front yard and we'd leave him there. We weren't trying to bring that in.
I was in a convenience store once and he came in, stood there at the door, plastered. Didn't even realize I was there. I don't know if the guy behind the counter knew I was his son, but my mother told me he knew about the old guy's drinking problem (and no, I don't call him my father).
I made my purchases and casually walked right past him out the door and took off running to join some friends.
Ah, now those are memories. And people ask me why I don't drink. Ha! Don't need to.

This man made so many things worse with his efforts and ideas, thinking it re-enforced his authority and we excused his drinking. Just the way he was.
3 drunks in my family and I have stayed as far away as possible from them throughout my life. I was only 12 when one of my brothers' used to beat the hell out of me when he was in a drunken rage. An excellent film. Thanks so much for uploading

Skygazer-there were 3 alcoholics in my family.. 1 sister was the worst.. Dad was not abusive to me,was my best friend.. It was a shame that he smoked and drank.So,I can relate to you--and the girl in this film
I had four alcoholic grandparents and I don't want it to effect me. I have had to cut family members out of my life due to their behaviors and what their families said and did to me. Then they wonder why I have nothing to do with them. DUH!😠

These are wonderful movies...I used to watch them.... they were called “After School Movies” I would learn a lot. I have worked with addictions and have patients who have these problems... I’m soo glad when people reach their limit ...crash as low as they can get and realize....”It’s upwards from here...let me get help!”
I LOVED these movies! I turned 60 today and as a kid I always watched them! They made you feel like you weren’t the only one in a lot of situations. God where did the time go???

I'm from the Hopi reservation northeastern Arizona and I too grew up with an alcoholic step father and just about the whole village, each family had an alcoholic but, its even worse now, there's no jobs out here so everyone get caught up in alcohol and drugs bootlegging and dealing drugs just to make ends meet. I could go on and on. I watched my stepdad and my mom fight each other ever since my sister and I were very little. Then my mom took it all out on us and it was extremely horrible and years later I became an extremely heavy drinker. Lost my leg in a horrific motorcycle accident and almost died three times in the hospital. Later on I wrecked three trucks, and my very first brand-new car in Flagstaff Az. I could've killed myself and my passengers or even a pedestrian. I am extremely fortunate to still be alive. Especially that of my passengers. I have two UA-cam channels where I talk about my new life of sobriety and no more drugs. Plus our music 🎶 I'm a musician artist writer 😎 check it out. I pray those who have overcame their alcoholism and drug abuse, I pray for those who are still out there suffering.

MOM! Actually, in all seriousness, this is the story of my teen years back then '81 and in high school *dreading* anyone in the neighborhood having a chance encounter with my mom. She never became sober before her passing. The best choice I made in my adult years was going no contact. Awful at first, but as time went on - it was the right decision. I spoke to her a few years before her passing and for *my* peace of mind, 'forgave' her. No sense crying over spilled vodka for the rest of my life. Sad but true.
For me it was my dad. Glad you made the right decision for you♥️

You forgave her???? Sounds like you are of the opinion that your mom had made a conscious decision to drink. Well she didn’t as addiction is an illness that mom had very little to no control over. Treatment is hard to get unless you’re wealthy. So the fact you walked out on her and after many years you decided to forgive her… that is sad and I would hope someone has educated you know. Addiction is an awful lonely existence and I can’t help thinking that walking out on someone would almost destroy most moms , try support and understanding without judgement. Good luck for future problems and please don’t judge people on something they can’t control.
Sometimes forgiveness is a gift that you give yourself. You’re not condoning or accepting the hurtful behavior….you are just not going to allow it to become detrimental or destructive to your life and living…. Move onward and forward and don’t look back! God be with you..😊♥️🙏

The best thing about this movie is that it didn't end like i thought it would - mom stops drinking, everybody embracing. This was a really realistic show and as one who was helped a LOT by Al Anon, i was so happy to see the healing was through Ala Teen. They should put this on the tv today!

These after school specials were ahead of their time. My dad was a weekend drunk...wouldn't come home from work until maybe Sunday morning, or sometimes Sunday evening. I never had friends over, actually I didnt have many friends, could never have sleep overs as a kid, and I never went on sleep overs either, I didnt want to leave my mom alone. No one knew about my dad. I never shared with anyone. And he was a mean drunk too. If he did come home all he did was yell and verbally abuse us. Very traumatizing. Yet when he was sober he was the nicest guy walking the face of the earth. Would give you the shirt off of his back. The friends I had loved him. I thought "if you only knew". Yet I still loved him. Bur I hated the drunk. I stay far away from any guy that drinks excessively. And I dont drink either
My dad too, nobody knew. Military family, so we were away from extended family. It was hell. The secrecy from others makes it more sick.
We need more series like this back

My stepmother was alcoholic & abusive. She never gave up drinking. It was terrible living around her. I pray for those who have to live with people with addictions. Thank you for sharing this. God Bless You & stay safe.

@@tj921able I see. Was it the drinking that killed her? I'm just curious is all. My grandfather was an alcoholic. However, my grandmother had the courage to leave him when my mother and her siblings were still children. This was around 1940ish when women simply did not do that and were expected to stay in the marriage and endure the suffering and abuse. I only met him once when I was 2 years old. My mother wouldn't even let me go to his funeral when he died and I was 14 at the time.
@@retroguy9494 Basically, yes. She eventually got cancer & I suspect it was from all her drinking vodka heavily over the years. It was stomach cancer. Sorry for the loss of your grandfather to this. I was 25 when she passed away and did attend her funeral.
I love watching these after school specials again in my 50s. Been married to a drunk since 1992. Separated since 2009. I don’t call alcoholism a disease. It’s not like cancer which I didn’t have a choice to have!

I was one year old in '81 when I this came out, and I remember seeing this when I was around 10, in the early 90s. They aird this after school special for years.

I wonder if many of you commenting remember 1981, a different mindframe in life, alcoholism was treated so much different than today, now it's more associated with childhood trauma, then, an self inflected addiction.

This film helped me recognize codependent signs and nature in people eairly. As a young child I was prepared for Jr High and friends personal challenges by watching this.

My mom was a prescription drug addict my first five years. My older sister missed so much school because she was afraid if she went to school no one would take care of us, and we’d be taken away. Four kids under five. She was our mother those years, and just like this kid

For me it was my mother with her lambrusco. She passed out while watching my baby daughter and the dog woke her just in time to prevent my daughter from falling out of the second story window.. no contact after that.

I was in high school when this first came out. I remember it.
My dad drank at night and had not much spine around my step mom who was a day/24 hour drunk . She'd drink vodka that was poured to the top of a water glass, to make it seem like she was drinking "water" . I guess it "tricked" my dad . He was in denial she had a major problem , and in denial of his own issues.
She could be quite angry, physically volatile, and paranoid. I don't miss those times . Even going on a trip with them to Disneyland or watching a movie as a family at home, was a major downer, and really stressful. Anything was stressful aside from getting to read in bed at night. We weren't allowed to be awake if we were put to bed, but that is when we read books.. also in the morning before the parents got up was relatively peaceful, but the fear was always there. You couldn't even have the "wrong" expression on your face, let alone say anything "wrong". Basically being alive in their presence was the "wrong" thing to do 99% of the time.

The first step is to stop pretending things are okay when they obviously are not okay.
The mother actor really got into the character very realistic, i would have gave her an award for the performance. I use to hang out at bars in my early 20's and saw how drinkers behave and life their lives. Its a horrible lifestyle and even being around it because you're a victim which its called "Co-Alcoholism" which I had no idea that I was one.
My mum loved alotof things even me and my little sister but the bottle just seemed to call her more growing up was just normal but getting older put life in to spectate for us I was born alcoholic and I drank anything I could with alcohol in it ii have begun to turn my life around too a point where I can safely say I have beaten the bottle if anyone is reading this there is always hope with anything focus on your goals hardwood and determination good luck xxxxx

Amanda Wyss is an actress playing Cindy, who is an actress in the high school play, playing Sally, who wants to be an actress. So many levels of reality.
She’s one of my favorite actress who starred in My Mother’s Secret Life, Nightmare on Elm Street, Silverado and Shakma.

So sorry. # my friend’s husband. They still loved each other but Carrie refused to play 2nd fiddle to booze. They lived four blocks apart. One day the kids were supposed to go to his house after class. Jerry, age 10, found him dead on the floor. His cirrhosis and heart gave out.

I'm very lucky and glad that my parents both aren't. However, I have 6 people in my family who are alcoholics... As well as a good friend of mine so ik what it feels like
My aunt and uncle wouldn't stop fighting till bleeding while drunk, but my cousin (male) and my friend Lisa are happy drunks, meaning they never fight or injure none. However they both have health issues and still this doesn't stop them idk what to do...
My friend recently stopped working bcz of health issues (didn't get actually fired thankfully) but just stopped. Her stomach ulcer, moderate hepatitis and mild pancreatitis made her stop bcz of fatigue.
Since then she's been drinking 24/7 waking up heck knows where. Every day I'm worried about her getting hit by a car or dying chocked on her own vomit.
Then another (female) cousin of mine who literally is an alcoholic WITH cocaine issues... Ah I know nothing happy at all
Thank you for the memories the ABC Network would have this on 3:00 in the afternoon to 4 then they would have it on Saturdays 11:00 to noon with Ron Glass from Barney Miller he was the host they were a true stories how about everyday occurrence is it in America in the 1970s if I remember right the years ago I looked it up 1972 to 1995 we used to watch this in English class the special education teacher taped it on his VCR for English class Wisconsin remembers great classic television at its best when times were a little bit easier and we had good actors😊

Mitch was a good guy. It's hard to find a decent teenage boy. I only knew two decent guys during my high school years. I wasn't romantic with them mind you, we were just good friends.
I remember watching these too after I had finished all of my homework, some of these had hit me hard too. I miss watching them so glad for UA-cam I am able to watch them all over again.
This movie was hard to watch. Being a recovering alcoholic to watch this mother drink her life away. It's so sad.
The teenagers in this movie must be in their mid fifties now if they are still around.
I'm 56 & I can assure you that they're older because they were older than I was back then.
Cindy had to take on a lot of responsibility.

A commonality of these after school specials is a drunken mother. A mother who is very harsh and neglectful. Not the father. The father can be MIA for whatever reason. He can speak with a harsh voice and is still portrayed in a good light. He is idolized in the end. I see these stories in a different light as a adult.
My dad’s an alcoholic and drug user. When my mom left him, that was the last time I saw the guy. That was back in 2006.
Bring these back!
UPDATE: I recently had to tell my friend to back off with her drama and crisis. Her repeated disastrous life choices and constant self pity was beginning to affect me mentally. I finally realized it's not up to me to be the sole person she leans on for support and encouragement, nor is it healthy for me. We still talk, I'll always love her, but we don't talk about her life at all anymore, just basic normal stuff. I don't bother asking how she's doing anymore because I already know. I'm thankful she understands. I also ordered a book on co-dependancy.
What does one do if their good friend is an alcoholic but also suicidal?
She's 40, unable to work. She doesn't do proper hygiene anymore. She hurts herself from blackout drunks. She prefers to drink alone. Her depression is so great that I don't think she even sees the point of getting sober. Her family is awful, all they do is put her down.
I wish I could do the right thing and say, "Don't contact me unless it's to take you to rehab." But I'm absolutely terrified she'll commit suicide if she's left to flounder.
Awful. I have a similar friend, Lisa. She's wonderful, holds a job and wears makeup and still maintain hygiene.
But she's a high functioning alcoholic with great depression too... She can't see life's beauty without booze anymore and she has mild hepatitis and an ulcer but she still has no desire to quit idk what to do anymore...
@@emnemnem1889 Aww, we're going through the exact same thing. My girlfriend is now vomiting blood so I know it's getting really bad but she refuses to go to the doctor. I think the only thing you and I can do is keep encouraging a sober lifestyle and just love them through it.

Update she's not as functional anymore, now she works less bcz of ulcer pain and a lot of nausea and vomiting, but instead she's drunk 24/7 to numb the symptoms... This literally made me cry when I found out. She's afraid about the idea of losing her job but at the same time all she cares about is booze...
I'm about to tell you a crazy story that happened yesterday.
As she went to her usual bar, everything was fine until, obviously she got sick there. Bcz of that, the owner (btw a very close friend as it is the only bar she's been going to since her 19, she's 32)refused her booze for the first time. But it didn't make her mad! Actually, she told a guy, another friend to talk to her (the owner) and convince her to go outside for a while. During that time she went discreetly behind the bar and took advantage of the 10 minutes she had to get wasted as quickly as possible, by putting the empty bottles at their exact place, hoping she wouldn't notice...
Little did she know she would break one accidentally on the floor and while trying to mop it out, touch some glass w her hand... Then noticing that the owner was coming back she quickly ran away, but ofc there were blood drops on the floor as she was bleeding from her hand, which let the owner to her.
But then the interesting part happens when her 13 years old niece sees it and is asked by the owner to take her home.
As the teenage girl takes her home, she lays her on the bed, turns on TV and heads to the kitchen. You might think now, everything seems so adorable and sweet, what could go wrong?
Well, she came back with a cup of tea on a plate telling her that the owner suggested that she doesn't get booze as she is sick. She slapped her for that on the cheek yelling that she "ain't drinking grass" and then pushed her and accidentally by being pushed away, she hit the door handle w her forehead, which caused a little, very little injury but still made it bleed a little. She then apologized and hugged her.
Today (so the next morning) she approached her niece who was obviously wearing a plaster (idk what's it in English but yk a medicine sticker) and asked her who did it to her and that if somebody ever dared doing it to her at school he/she would be in trouble but ofc she lied and said that she did it to herself by falling and not being careful.
But then I came and asked her to tell me the truth cuz I felt deep down that it was a lie. And she told me. She said that she didn't want to tell her the truth cuz it wouldn't please her and she doesn't even remember anything anyway.
She also said that she didn't understand why she left the house so early while she was still asleep instead of staying for breakfast but ofc I knew that it was prolly cuz she was about to or was withdrawing and didn't want her to see her shakes as she is too young...
I was quite devastated finding this out ngl. She can literally die if she stops cold turkey and it's been going on like that for over 10 years, approximately 17 years of alcoholism and I just don't know what to do.
I guess you're right, there's nothing we can do. I wonder how the owner, her friend feels. She probably feels like an enabler, worse than I feel. But hey she's a bartender, it's her job...
And she's an adult who needs to take care of herself on her own, and quiting requires immense willpower, sthg she doesn't have and she knows it. She's an amazing teacher and her students love her but she knows she won't be able to work at some point. She is so young, she has yet to find a nice loving man, have a normal and sober life and build a family...that's just saddening.
She's very beautiful too. If she didn't drink she would be even prettier, her face would be thinner and she wouldn't have those always bloodshot, tired eyes.
My boyfriend tried to talk to her too, many times, but whenever her drinking is brought up into a conversation she gets defensive (yet she's a very pacifist drunk, not a rageholic at all).

My dad couldn't wait to get home to dig in to his Milwaukee's best and Boone's Farm. and sometimes Jack Daniels. Rough Rough Childhood. Boy was he a mean drunk. He was always in a bad mood when he came home from work. I don't know how he functioned at GM drinking everyday.

Amanda Wyss who was in 1984s A Nightmare on Elm Street. As a kid of the 80s I remember a lot of these after school specials. Wasn't Heather Langenkamp also in some sort of after school special as well? Seems like a lot of late 70s and early 80s actors were in them.

People didn't eat McDonalds three times a day, everyone ate at home, going out was a real treat and portions were MUCH smaller... no such thing as "super sized" and Big Gulps.

My Momma was married to an alcoholic, before she married my Daddy, and I remember going through a box of clothes to give to a friend of mine,and I pulled out a huge Vodka bottle. I was so embarrassed, but my friend's parents were alcoholics, so she understood. I was a child, and I would hide bottles, empty them out, going with my Momma at all hours to find him, the fighting, and the lies was forced to tell. I hated my Momma for a long time, because she never left him, even after he broke my foot, because I was trying to get him to stop coming after my Momma, and she was in the floor screaming, and I was just 63 pounds, and a 300 pound man threw me, and broke my foot. As I got older, I was Dr. Death about alcohol, but I would always get into relationships with alcoholics, drug users,or both. One day my Momma was coming down on me about my choice in men, and I told her to stop right there, and to stop being such a hypocrite, because she stayed with an alcoholic, and now she wonders why I did that? It was because I was taught to! She of course cried, and made herself the victim, but I was just a child, and I was the true victim in all of it. I could really sympathize with the Cindy character, because I had to do that, take care of an adult, and I was barely in the third grade. I wish that this had been on when I was going through all that, and that there was a place for me to go to, and talk to someone, but I'm getting help now for it, and for other things too. Alcoholics aren't easy to live with,and they're even harder to love. I understand perfectly.

I looked up "Little House on the Prairie" for school once - - in real life, Mary was blind, but she never got married and never had any children.
And, yes, in this movie, the mother was played by the actress who was Grace (Mr. Edwards's wife) on "Little House on the Prairie."
And, I saw two books on Amazon, written by Melissa Gilbert (Laura) and Alison Arngrim (Nellie) - - both of them were alcoholics.
My dad was nothing but a druncken looser. Were talking left us when i was 7. Didnt pay child sopport, lived in rooming houses the whole bad works.

It was heartbreaking when the little brother got hit. It illustrated how alcoholism can make you lose control. I saw this movie during the late 80’s when I was 12 and it was painful hearing Brett crying like that.

The young actors did an amazing job in telling like it is.
It was never said if the mother got fired from her job - - because it wasn't said, I guess we can assume that she didn't get fired.
And, I wondered how the mother was supporting herself and her two children, plus paying for all of that alcohol.
This was a good movie, but it was "mild" - - the mother hit the little boy, but he was fine (no black eye or worse).
The scene that the mother made at the play could have been a lot worse.
Alcoholics are often way more abusive.
It was good that that mother from the car pool said that the drunk mother didn't need to drive the car pool anymore.
A drunk driver, driving a group of kids to school, could end with a horrible accident.
I was glad that this movie didn't have the usual happy ending.
At the last scene, the mother was lying on the floor, passed out.
She never accepted herself as an alcoholic.
She never went to AA.
She never went into rehab.
It is good to see a story that is more true to life.
And, I also appreciated that the daughter didn't have a romance with the guy who helped her to go to Alateen.
I appreciated that they were just friends who had a common problem and got close and helped each other, but that they didn't take it any farther.
There should be more movies like this - - true to real life.
