    I like watching these videos. They bring back fond memories as I'm a retired service tech. in the uk. I also like the fact that you use the correct pronunciation of the word solder. So many in the US forget the "L" and say " soder". It grates on the ears so for that fact I like you. Regards Bob.

      That's because I am Canadian. We also pronounce roof correct not "ruff" as our neighbours to the south do, and we spell colour correctly even though my spell corrector is complaining every time I type it that way!

    I not discouraged despite not write off on my first post asking for repair tv
    and replied that as you try to help others as soon as you have the time and stories already known faults :D
    - I have the impression that you like what you're doing and respect in your page by closing an eye on the injured English.
    sorry about that.

      I don't mind the comments in the channel, but when people look up my phone number and actually phone me asking for advice, that is going way over the line. They also usually call over Skype or some other IP based system, that I can barely understand due to all the delays and echo, and then thrown in an accent to boot.

    love the video! don't let trolls and idiots get you down. anything you do here (posting videos, answering questions) is free!! if people really need answers there are so many forums with great people who can help. You are one man (and retired at that) so people need to just back off lol! I would love to see some videos of your collections and maybe other cool stuff (unfortunately Im just not a fan of the traveling videos).

    I have one of these units and with the help of your videos I was able to re-cap much of the board, clean the mechanisms, and get it working again after 20+ years of sitting. I wonder if you might have a suggestion for solving an issues though. I can now play a DAT tape but there's considerable high-frequency noise onplayback. On the DATs that I recorded decades ago, I lead the tape with 1K, 10K, and 100hz tones @ -12 db. There is considerable modulation noise in the 1K tone that is audible and also clear in the time-domain waveform for both channels when dubbed to my DAW. The modulation is not the same on the left and right channels. Might this be aliasing errors from the playback circuit? Or maybe might it be more bad capacitors? The noise is present in both the spdif and unbalanced analog outs. This makes the deck unusable so I appreciate any help you might offer. D

    Question: When I see some digital recorder unit advertised as a PWM unit, is this different from a DAT unit? I know that the HiFi vcr units used pwm for audio recording but is this still “Digital” as in a DAT unit? Thanks ....

    Smashing tight space repair, thankyou for an enjoyable repair :-D
    .
    They should be renamed to "Crapacitors" it would be a better discription :).
    Ill have to remember that devices of that age are full of crapacitors, most of the things ive repaired are younger so its mostly psu caps that ive found bad.
    Yes a good old linear supply :-), a couple of Lm317''s and two seperate secondary windings would be my way.
    The lm317 is my favorite along with the 78XX series.

      I have called them that in past videos. The power supply I will build will be linear with an lm 78xx an 79xx regulatos.

    Hi there 12voltvids! Thanks for making this video. I am currently working on a Casio DA-7 (which is the parent/sister model of the unit in the video). Looks like I'm going to have to re-cap the board now that I've gotten power to the unit. BTW, I found a 3 pin connector that does work well...I took an LED on connector from an old computer (two pins wired, used the third connection for ground). That power connector is near impossible to find!

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 років тому

      I lucked out as a viewer sent me one from Australia. Was set up for 240V, so I built a dual voltage +7-7 supply and "made it fit" into the original power adapter case with the creative use of zap straps. Works great. I now have 2 units, but robbed the pinch roller out of this one to fix the other one as it was in better cosmetic shape. This one now is a parts spare.

    Hi, a question watching your video.I have a Dat Casio Da7 that has a single defect and does not rewind the tape while instead it records, plays and FF perfectly: it makes sense in your opinion to replace all these capacitors or the problem is of other type? Thank you!

  • @davidbell2967

    I have a Panasonic SV-255 portable DAT machine that is doing pretty much the same as yours. When you load a tape, the head drum (this unit has the small, not full sized DAT head drum) is just spinning very slowly when you press play. I had not used this deck in 8 years, and it was working perfectly last time I used it. Do you think it's probably caps like in the one you just repaired? Wanna make another video? :-)

    I'm the current custodian of SN 003389, it's box and accessories. It needs check/adjustment with TY-7551 - wondering where I can find it... I got it as a previously repaired "for parts" special, not even recognizing any tape. After complete refurbishment I've gotten it to look and sound okay now, just the odd error and the cylinder and clock pulse synchronicity is very likely off. If I can find/rent/borrow the test tapes I'd be very happy.

    I have a pair of portable NXT flat speakers and I have an MP3 player and cartoon video viewer called a juiceBox and all three devices have the same issue with decomposing plastic and I'm not sure how to get rid of it. I might try this b/c Goo Gone doesn't seem to work well.
    Nice fix on this machine. I had a Bose Wave Radio and I had it playing and the audio just faded away to nothing. Tried to fix the caps but ended up junking it. Kept the speakers/waveguide channel.
    And I do still hear some glitching in the audio of this machine but it's lots better than when you got it.

    I wonder if you could use Tantalum solid electrolytic capacitors in place of the wet electrolytic capacitors so as not to have the problem ever again.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 років тому

      Tantalums never fail? Your kidding right. That's why I didn't have to change 50+ caps in all those Sony SL5000 Betamax units in the 80's. They use Sanyo tantalum caps, and they all went bad and caused major servo problems (capstan and drum motors hunting for speed lock)

  • @heris30
    @heris30 8 років тому

    And one question from this video: original caps was 6,3V and 10mkf and you changed to 25V 10mkf. It is good for that voltage difference? Or it was 2,5V capacitors?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 років тому

      OK to go up a bit in voltage. The caps are a little larger physically, but I got em in. You can't go down in voltage if you want it to last.

    • @heris30
      @heris30 8 років тому

      +12voltvids wow that was fast answer. :) In this setting it is not important voltage diference? I had this model that you are repairing and something wrong with mine. It wont turn on after capacitors replacement. Soldering was good. Capacitor changed and nothing changed. So i donated this device.. Good video. Keep on going. :)

    • @jaymemaurice
      @jaymemaurice 5 років тому

      @@heris30 I know it's late but the voltage rating on a capacitor is it's "maximum voltage" - exceed this and it's likely to fail. Higher voltage capacitors use beefier insides (like the foil/insulator inside might be thicker) which usually means a higher voltage cap will have a larger physical size or possible higher ESR rating if equivalent physical size. The voltage a capacitor will see/charge to is dependent on the circuit that charges it.

    Hi there. I own one of these and yep, when it arrived - it was all gummed up with that awful coating. The surface mount electrolytic caps were all gone so the mechanism had no strength to do anything. I replaced the surface mount caps with new ones, and where possible I would replace them with regular electrolytic caps. I had the battery reconditioned and I was able to get over 2 hours of recording on it. The microphone preamp was noisy, and there was a mod you can download from the net to improve the audio performance. Here is the website
    web.aanet.com.au/gwg/DAP20mods.html
    The only problem left with this unit was the pinch roller. I think the material it was made of was similar to the material they used on the outside. I had to clean the pinch roller every time I wanted to use it, otherwise it would ruin any tape I used in it.
    Cheers.

      OK IC402 is your mic preamp, and reverb circuit. It is powered with a +15 v supply on pin 8, and a -15v supply on pin 4.These power rails trace back to fusable resistors R505 and R506, and voltage is regulated by 2 zener diodes D507 and D508, with finter capacitors C510 and 511. Check these voltages. If one is missing or low this will cause a problem.

      I have 2 Panasonic Plasma sets here I fixed. One had a handful of parts on the SS board that failed because they forgot to put lock washers on the screws that hold the SS board in place. The screws get loose, cause arcing, and blow parts.Of course Samsung is also guilty of this shoddy construction.
