I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
I genuinely thought the pick of destiny was a huge hit, and loved the album. I had no idea it was a flop.
it wasnt . most everyone has seen it
Pick of destiny is a dead set classic
It is an amazing film. Ofcourse it's not gonna do big hollywood numbers it's the fuckin D
Me too... I'm sad to know that. I watched it a million times getting baked high
Yeah, flop compared to billion dollar films with power fantasies as the only plot driver(hero fuckin movies, like change the damn channel already its old hat now). What they knew then is the same of any Musical, it will do poorly. Musicals are corny as hell, only stage actors enjoy them, and teachers. They really like corny shit, those teachers, but it's done well, amd is equal parts music and comedy. It doesn't make a tough ketchup bottle a song like most musicals straight cut to a dumb reason to start singing in unison, this didn't do that. It lacked the heavy corniness of most musicals, amd instead imparted a large part of actual acting too. To me, this is the recipe for musicals if you want them to WORK.
Pick of Destiny is such a killer movie! One of those movies that gained a cult following years after its release. It deserves more attention than it gets
Just look at 1982's the Thing. It bombed and is now considered one of the best ever. The POD Rocked!!
Nepatism is rampant in Hollywood and he has connected parents but Jack's talent is world class. I rember being at a pub in Swansea and it was metal night. Tribute came on and the whole bar was singing it including the old men in the other bar. It was so wholesome and rocked which sums him up.
Everyone nose about the nepotism in Hollywood, as well as the sexual abuse of children, culturally subversive storylines in films and the misrepresentation of historical facts.
Jack Black is the only person I've ever heard Bob Odenkirk place in the same category as Chris Farley. He's not wrong either. Talent is talent and Jack has all of the talent.
Is nepatism bad? I hear about miller and sons plumbing, or goldstein, goldstein and goldstein law firm, i don’t see the problem
Nepotism - O is on the other end of the keyboard.
@@Ottophil I think where people have issues with nepotism is that it means people with a particular family name get more opportunities than some people with actual talent, resulting in an unfair playing field. While there are some talented people within particular hereditary lines, those without any connections might not have a chance to showcase their skills/prove their merit
POD was such a great fkn movie! I bought the DVD back when it was released. It was like everything we needed in music movies since Spinal Tap!
I thought Tribute was a nod to Stairway To Heaven, hence the OG recording on the HBO show that sampled a section that had to be changed for the album for legal reasons
Tenacious D is legendary
Jack Black, an American dream come true. Money, movies and rock n roll lifestyle. You go guys, lots of love from Canada
Saw them play at blue ridge rock festival, amazing performance crowd was lit for them
They deserve recognition. In a roundabout way they remind me of Frank Zappa
My daughter is 4 and is absolutely obsessed with the greatest song in the world... Tribute lol.
The pick of destiny is one of my favorite movies. Cant believe it was a flop!
i didn't know they're an actual band/singer duo, i though it was just a thing in the movie
Tenacious D are what rock and roll is all about, an amazing band I saw them do the pick of destiny tour in Glasgow and it was jus pure energy, ace band
I also loved the tenacious D movie and the music. I purchased the movie in the special box that came with the pick of destiny . I only buy movies for my movie collection that i consider really really good . I also thought it was a huge hit . I am sad to hear otherwise the guitar riffs and songs and the comedy and the story were a refreshing out of the box change to the normal stuff that was coming out . Keep rockin jack and kyle
If you're a true Tenacious D fan, The Pick of Destiny is their love child. We honor them and our own enjoyment
They say it’s a flop and maybe they didn’t make as much money back, but it’s one of the greatest movies in the world
I loved everything about the pick of destiny...
Ken Andrews of Failure also appeared on the debut album; nice omission there 🤔
Done a whole video on failure’s history it’s on my channel
@@rnrtruestories didn't know that; I'll have to check that out 👍
And now they don't even play video games no more
Greatest band in the history of music. PERIOD
PARENTHESES For Real! PARENTHESES
Not a huge tenacious d fan but interesting video..they were also in bio dome and jack was in the neverending story part 13(lol).idk which actual sequal it was.
I liked their hbo show. We thought it was really funny. Then to see some of that stuff make it on to their first album was awesome. It’s really cool to be on the ground floor or that kinda stuff. When the first album came out it was cool to explain to people some of the things that came from the show. 😉
Last week, Kyle quit the band.
Now their back together
PLEASE tell me you really thought Ben Stiller was Ronny James Dio in the Movie Pic of Destiny? That might be the funniest fk up I’ve ever seen on YT. Great video, just had to give ya a hard time.
Modern day Cheech and Chong ,,, Jack Black is so multi talented big screen & top notch vocals that could rival any front man today
Wait , Wait , Wait you Motherfucker ,,, one of the greatest lines in rock n roll history
The pick of destiny is a great movie I never knew it flopped!!! How is it possible that we can get a million Miley Cyrus clones with a billion shitty songs into the top 100 but "Tenacious D" remains relatively unknown. I hope they do a second pick of destiny movie or something similar. I am so sure people would love it this time!
you for got about Bio Dome!
I’m glad Jack Black isn’t quite as active in film because we are getting more Tenacious D stuff. Great episode!
They also appeared in the movie Biodome, singing about saving the trees.
PATIENCE...🌎
Philadelphia USA 🇺🇲❤️
Nikki sixx I also have a list
Gene Simmons and a Stanley.
Nikki sixx
METALLICA !!!(POOR BOY AND THE DOG KICKER)
Vlad the Impaler❤
Philadelphia USA 🇺🇲 AMEN ☦️🙏😇💋 Hey now.
At least diamond David Lee Roth is now a paramedic 🌎🌹
The pick of destiny was so good.
Unfortunately, that’s just how it is super talented bands I always deal with stuff like this people just don’t appreciate their stuff not gonna lie at first I wasn’t a fan of jack black because I thought he was trying to act like Chris Farley because the first movie I ever saw him in was shallow Hal because of the very first scene he rolls over the bed and his acting kind of hyper and slightly odd and I was like is he trying to imitate Chris Farley? It’s terrible so I just didn’t like them for a while and then I noticed that’s just how he is in his movies. He’s not trying to imitate Chris Farley and then I saw the pick of Destiny and I found love with that movie and I honestly love the music he has put out now I am a huge fan of Jack Black and I’m so happy he’s doing very well.
Blackjack story should have stayed untold...
A fking longass time ago in a town called Kickapoo....
This isn't the untold story of Tenacious D.
This is just a tribute.
It really is a tribute lol
Noice
He couldn't actually remember the untold story of tenacious D so this is just a tribute
Well that's a matter of opinion, but I gotta believe him. I just wish he was there.
untold to me lmao
I watched a stripper dance to "Kielbasa" once and it was the greatest dollar I've ever spent.
My kielbasa sausage has just got to perform.
😂
This is a song called the history of Tenacious D
And its not just a list of bullshit that we've done in the past
It's a chronicling of our rise....TO POWER
🫡🫡🫡
We walked with Jesus and his cross! He did not die in vein, no!
Supreeeeeme yeah~~~
Go now kyle one two three
And if you say that we do not ride...
Needless to say,
The beast was stunned.
Whip-crack went his whippy tail,
And the beast was done.
He asked us,
Be you angels?
And we said nay,
We are but men,
Rock!
Hell yeah!
One of the hardest lines in the history of music
🤘
One of my favourite songs!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
The Pick of Destiny is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I'm disappointed to hear that it did so poorly.
Man.. I have a Pick from the collectors edition of the movie, signed on the back by Ronnie James Dio himself. I brought it to a meeting with Jack and Kyle after a show for Rize of the Fenix, and while he seemed genuinely interested in the pick being signed by Dio, when I asked him and Kyle to sign it as well, he said "I cannot sully its greatness".
I fucking love this band.
They are the best band EVER! period!
Fuck that's a nice story
The fact they became Rock n Roll legends by only singing funny songs is sign that they are extremely talented musicians.
A Biography we all needed! Tenacious D is such an underrated band. Thanks for this one!
Overrated band for obvious reasons.
"I wanted some of his sauce." WTF?
Heard that corny and pretentious crap and wanted to puke.
I have personally seen Tenacious D and The Pick of Destiny around 300 times. There was a four-year. That was the only movie that I watched. Just the fact that Jack Black said that movie was a failure breaks my heart because that is my all-time favorite movie of all f****** time
5:38 -It is not some guy from the band Fish (wrong band/album art), it is Page McConnell, the Keys player of the band Phish, that recorded on the first D album.
6:29 - Dio gave his approval to Tenacious D for the track “Dio”.
Tenacious D appeared in Dio’s music video for Push, not the other way around as this is not a Tenacious D song.
Dio does appear in the D’s Pick of Destiny and does vocals on the track “Kickapoo”
7:36 - Dave Grohl and Dio did not star in the movie P.O.D. They each had a one scene cameo part, as a lot of famous musicians and actors did in that movie.
Id argue that Dave Grohl did star in POD as he was Satan, sure it was only a couple minutes but I think Thats more than just a cameo appearance like DIO's role.
@@shadowessence4782 I’ll allow it
Thanks for correcting this. It bothered me as I watched the video
Not only did Dave grohl play Satan he did the vocals and drums for it too soo I'd say it was more than just a cameo
@@big.muscles.ohyeah Sure. I was just saying Grohl wasn’t billed as a star in the movie.
Meatloaf plays Jacks dad and has a song.
It's criminal that the pick of destiny flopped in theaters, It's such a fun movie! And also made me appreciate rock even more. Honestly I was like 13 when it dropped and only learned about it and seen it when I turned 19, instantly fell in love with it.
The Pick of Destiny is one of my all-time favorite movies!
Tenacious D is totally underrated!
7:37 “despite starring Dave Grohl and Ronny James Dio” shows picture of Ben Stiller
Love the "The Pick of Destiny", the Sasquatch scene makes me lmao every time I watch it.
My wittle baby Sass
Kyle was on Outlaw Country Cruise 7 in February just as a cruiser, and he played a late night set that was PACKED and KILLER! The semi famous pedal steel maestro Ditch Kurtz (and bass player Billy) sang Tribute with him and CRUSHED IT!
POD is better than it gets credit for.
Cusack nailed it. Black is the king of somewhere. Not Earth, but somewhere.
It's interesting how there's simpler acoustic versions of the full band stuff that appears on their first album. Really shocking to hear that the band's movie wasn't a hit, as a fan of both the movie and the TV show. The D have such a unique bond with one another, and it's awesome you covered them.
I bought the pick of destiny as soon as it dropped..with the pick and special packaging. Funk all the naysayers!!! Tenacious D Rulz!!!
I can't believe the pick of destiny was a failure
I like the pick of destinaty.. great album and movie 🎥
I totally agree. Kickapoo, Beelzaboss, Master Exploder and Dude I totally miss you are Kick Ass songs. I own both the movie and the Soundtrack
Jack Black sucked in The Mandolorian
“Untold.”
These titles are so ridiculous sometimes 😂🤣😂
This is the greatest and best Tenacious D documentary in the world...
Tribute. 🔥💀🔥
Perfect 😅
I always thought Tribute was a nod to Stairway to Heaven! Whoops!
you guys know there is a dokumentari of the band? its called pick of destiny ^^
Yes! I was going to say the same thing. One of the best music biopics ever made. Completely based on a true story too.
Seen them open for weezer back in 01’. They opened with Queens “Flash Gordon”. It was killer
1994 Movie PCU staring David spade, Jon Favreau, and Jeremy Piven also features Tenacious D as background band in a scene. I'm surprised no one mentions this ever.
disappointed no mention of the game. Brutal Legend was amazing! it had a steam release in 2013 also and to this day still has very positive as the rating at 94% positive. Jack is my Hero!
left out the audio book?
Didn't know their movie flopped l laughed my ass off,l wonder if people love the movie now cuz sometimes it take awhile for people to appreciate that kind of humor
I thought they got their name from New York Knicks announcer Walt Clyde Frazier? He’s always saying tenacious defense to this day
Jack black said marv in an interview. But he could have been wrong
"I wanted some of his sauce." 🤢🤮
Keep that man's sauce the hell away from me...
Seriously though, since it first came out I probably watch "The pick of destiny," every 18 months or so. I remember seeing "High fidelity" at a midnight showing my girlfriend and I went to in a whim. That was that first thing I noticed Jack Black in and he f'cking stole the entire movie. I realized later that he was in The Jackal, and got his limbs blown off.
Side note: that was a stupid scene. You'd think The Jackal had to secure weapons through arms dealers all the time. thee fact that he then uses them as target practice to test them out would get around. I can't imagine the international Black market arms dealer community is all that large.
Watching Rock n' Roll Stories covering Tenacious D in a new video is long overdue.
IMO, Tenacious D (along with Spinal Tap) is one of the best comedy rock bands that I've ever heard.
No mere video call capture the divine spark that is The D!
This wasn't the greatest video ever made. It was just a tribute.
The Pick of Destiny is one of the best comedies of all time. I love that movie!
They had a small few seconds in bio dome
This band totally saved my life. THAT'S how bad my life was.
I’ve loved TD since the beginning!!! Looking forward to that new album.
Jack Black is a vocal GOAT and doesn't even know it, making it even better
Every critic that rated The D as lackluster, is definitely a Kenny G fan. Like, the one that even exists at all. Talking about the D in a negative light, is just dishonest, they are incredibly talented, not even their worst live performance could evoke any other feeling when witnessed. That person was paid, to shit on the parade. Like I said, Proll the Only Kenny G fan, in the world, wrote the review Jack Black questioned his motive, and was wise to do so.
Oh my shit! How can you mention influences for "Tribute" without mentioning Johnson at the crossroads
This is depressing to hear around the POD. "Poor performance" with the movie and album! Is that what was said? And the D themselves not happy with it? I don't even want to believe that. The musicianship, writing and comedy, these guys always got what's going to blow my brain-balls.
That Peaches song needed some Rage Kage
You could have just linked "The Pick of Destiny" that is THE history of Tenacious D
That’s not how they got their names, turns out Jack Black and Kyle Gas have birthmarks on their butt that spell Tenac ious D
Take 2 of the nuggets and throw them away!!! I wanna go half coke, half Diet Coke. Trying to watch my figure
You should lose the cringey stock footage.
🙄
I'll never forget when my eighth grade ass heard this album for ther first time! My homie was jamming it in his room when I went over to get him to play football, n like 10 of us ended up jamming in his room for the whole cd, n I remember we listened kielbasa sausage like 10 times!
Why censor words? It's the internet, fuck Google.
I personally find Jack to be extremely annoying.
"🎵We are the D, we are the D
We are the D, we are the D
We are the D, we are the D
We are the D, we are the D!🎶"
Remember the first time I saw these guys. Mind was blown. Black was in cable guy for 3 minutes and stole the scenes. So was Gass btw
They were briefly in biodome as well
Pick of Destiny is one of my all-time favorite movies.
Overrated. Just an annoying joke band.
“I’d finally felt like I’d found the next Nirvana.”
Huge, fucking HUGE praise. Holy shit.
I find it so strange that no one ever seems to bring up , imo , the best song on the first album , F*** her gently which was accompanied with a cartoon music video, that obviously had the animators from Ren and stimpy. Also, my personal favorite sketch on the album was them pulling up the fast food drive thru. ...that had me and my buddy playing it over and over...laughing are asses off 😂
Ween recorded a drive thru riff on the song Pollo Asado in 1991
Very under rated band
That's funny as hell....I always assumed their band name was a d*** joke.....never would've thought it stood for "defense" ...a term coming from marv Albert
I love the D but Post Apocalypto is probably the worst thing they've ever done. Less than 20 minutes of music on the record and the tracks are like 90 seconds long each. I can't understand why there was such a dramatic drop in quality. The networks passing on the series should have been a sign to not do it. Something more akin to the HBO episodes would have been cheap and easy
i feel that Tenacious D should be a universe that was Wonderboy pretending to be Barry (High Fidelity), and Dewey (school of rock) all along, changing the lives of people he met along the way - like a superhero
Where did they say a next album would come? I know that every 6 years they release a new album and theoretically in 2024 those 6 years will be fulfilled, but I didn't know that they had already mentioned it. I only heard him say "Its on the album" at the end of his song "Video Games"
you forgot to mention they appeared together as Tenacious D in the Movie Bio-dome, singing the song "Save some freaking trees"
Pick of destiny was a flop? Whoa. I love that movie. It's amazing. I can't watch it sitting down, I keep jumping up, dancing, mimiing, sitting on the floor, just can't sit still. Don't even know how many times I watched it, it's a masterpiece
saw them perform Tribute in 1995 and knew they would be huge. Spoke to Jack for a while and he was obviously cool and nice.
Easily my favorite band of all time, but the one time I went to one of their concerts, it was one of the most miserable experiences of my life. The crowd was the biggest bunch of dicks I've ever encountered at a concert. People were shoving their way through and getting in fights, my girlfriend kept getting groped, it was like 120 degrees inside the venue. It sucked.
