    This off-air recording might have been made some distance from New York, since I think there was some fading due to "skywave" (the atmospheric phenomenon which allows powerful AM radio signals to travel hundreds or even thousands of miles at night).

    That wouldn't be Jack Welby anchoring, would it? He was at the station in those early years.
    Also, I'm curious if there are among your collection, any airchecks of 1010 WINS from this period, as for comparison. These of WCBS are a window into how their format evolved over time (the station as I remember it seemed to gel after the second half of 1972, with the teletype SFX [recorded in-house], the four tones at the hour, the sounders heard well into the '80's, and so forth). But to hear such voices as Bob Glenn and Bill Fahan in those early years (I recall those two well into the '80's).
