    Neat for me to see this. Being born in the early 80s, I only remember him from movies like Major League, where he still had the same, dry sense of humor, but a bit more animated. His deadpan delivery in this clip was interesting, and yet I was still laughing out loud even sitting at a DQ while having breakfast. 😂

    Bob looks like he just came from a guest appearance on Space 1999 with that belt over the sweater 😂 (Yes I know the show actually wasn't in production yet) But speaking of which it's funny when they cut away from the picture to presumably get a closer shot and come back to essentially the same shot. That's all those cameras had back then and you couldn't just truck them in. Not easily anyway. Love the lack of depth too on Jonny's iso. That production especially the set sure came a long way over the years!

    People don't realize how important Ed was to the show. In the 60s and 70s the show was 90 min long and Ed did the announcing, side man conversation, and ads. In 1980 during Johnny's contract negotiations, he got NBC to shorten the show length but still kept Ed as an announcer and side man.

    Ill say this about the Knuckle Ball 3:33 Boston Catcher Jason Varitek could gun down someone stealing 2nd. Plus he was a switch hitter with power but he always sat out the games that Tim Wakefield pitched.
    I got to sit at the perfect height and position at Fenway once; Just about midway to 3/4 up the dugout from home plate and a pitched ball was at eye level while you're seated. Sure enough that ball danced after it left Wakefield and until it crossed the plate. For another game, I sat just 3 rows up from the on-deck circle and Tek was waiting there while I was talking with friends about the knuckler dancing and while Tek never said a word, he was nodding in agreement.

      This is from the early 1970’s, which was early in his entertainment career. The deadpan was his schtick then, and it was hilarious. But I think it would have been limiting, too, and become too routine over his long career. The man is so funny in so many different ways.

    One note: Ball Four didn’t knock baseball. Calling out the stupidity and hypocrisy of coaches and owners isn’t knocking baseball. It’s being truthful. It remains one of the finest sports books ever written, always funny, and it’s timeless. And it’s about more than just baseball. It’s about the changes going on in the country at the time with the Vietnam war end the masses finally fighting against authority.

    • @scooter5940
      @scooter5940 3 місяці тому +2

      He was just younger, hence the voice - plus he was a smoker so his voice may have aged more in his later years than is normal, but that is just a guess. I think he was 45 in this clip in 1971, and there just aren’t very many of the older shows out there for reference. This show was taped in NY, and I don’t think I’ve seen another one with that night cityscape background. Way cool.
