"Well, there goes that dream." This is so painful and yet so beautiful.
and that would be reality.
That line surprised me. Dominic was not dumb. Remember when he said to siobahn, are we in France now? About eating more nicely. And using the word touché. Neither of them knew it waz French. Dom knew thjngs. He was an enigma. Misunderstood.
“So painful and yet so beautiful” is the Irish artistic ethos in a nutshell.

Barry Keoghan went into my top 5 fav actors with like 3 performances. This guy is a monster
Same, i love his ability so much, he doesn't need to show the audience the big anger, big sorrowful to prove he's a good actor himself. His ability is the amount of delicate, detail he gives off for a short scene, it's meticulous.
Did you see Saltburn? Madness. He should be a serious contender for the Oscar.

Might be over analysing, but that brief "don't skip ahead" before he asked her made it appear as if he had already played out the scene (or dream in this case) in his mind and knew the outcome. Incredible writing in any case.
It felt like in the script he was talking to himself, but the actual scene he said it to her. Personally I think it would've worked better if he said it to himself, that shows more your point of him having played it out in his head many times.
It was also sort of like "don't skip ahead" a different way of saying "let me finish, don't worry know how this ends" agree with you there...
That world is missed.
The script note ‘she shakes her head, as kindly as she can’ is just fantastic writing and the performance to boot. What a movie.
How none of them got an Oscar is beyond me. What a moving and spectacular performance by all of the cast.
It was a good year for movies. Competition was great. Tar didn't get anything as well.

You're just racist. BAFTA isn't trustworthy for not awarding EEAAO. The Brits have always preferred dramas and musicals over comedies.

This movie was profoundly moving. I was captivated by the entire cast. My sincere thanks to them all for their dedication and hard work to make this film.

i liked the animals. i felt bad for jenny.
“Go do that thing over there I was gonna do”. Jeez, I just got that reference. Such a sad arc for this character, but so well done. I think, if there are any victims in this movie, it’s him. That other scene where he says “that’s probably the meanest thing I’ve ever heard” and looks completely devastated about realizing who is friend really is was also really got me.
Is it implied that he kills himself?

That head movement after 'well, there goes that dream'; as if waking up from the dream....incredible touch.
Superb characterization by Barry! The finger-twisting and eye movements express the tortured turmoil he's experiencing. Then, that soulful, " Well, there goes that dream. " Jesus wept.
Heartbreaking scene. I was blown away by the dialogue and the acting..
Barry Keoghan is brilliant in this. You know inside it hurts but he was already prepared for rejection. It gave him the go-ahead to drown himself since there wasn't much for him to live for.
I can only hope we see more of him so he can show his range. His acting in this movie was incredible.

Wow, now that I've seen this again, it really does feel like he was ready to off himself here, but ran into her and it changed his mind for a moment. Like, realizing that Padraic wasn't as nice as he thought was what initially made him lose all hope. But running into her gave him a spark of hope that he knew was highly unlikely but just wanted to give it one last shot. Unfortunately, he was right, there was never any hope for him.
I can't believe I missed it the first time I watched. I genuinely thought the prediction of the old woman of two people dying would be Jenny and Colm. Turns out, it was Dominic.

It was Colm in the end. If he could cut his fingers off just for Padraic talking to him.. he could kill himself when Padraic starts to make Colm's life a living hell.
In the end you'd see the old lady also holding the stick while staring at the body of water. The old lady kind of resembles death but with a hook to fetch dead body from water instead of a scythe.
And when his dad tells the lady in the post office that some fool drowned himself earlier.
You were suppose to miss it the first time you watched it, that's a sign of great writing. No one knew what he meant when he said he was going to back to do whatever it was he was going to do, it could've been anything, benign or otherwise.
should've won best picture and screenplay imo. It's so beautifully sober and poetic.

Never heard of Barry Keoghan before this movie and when I watched this scene it was the most heartbreaking moment in film I had ever watched. I couldn't believe his talent.

He's also excellent (and very creepy) in Killing of a Sacred Deer, also featuring Colin Farrell.

This is such a great film. A few years ago I started watching Irish made films and I have found them to be fine, rich, powerful things imbued with passion, tragedy, humor and heart.
My four favorite adjectives describing the Irish arts.
This scene is like..... devastating. Like, when I saw it, I was laughing at first, but then something about how kindly but bluntly she turns him down just breaks my heart
I think it's because it's the right balance of kind and firm for that scenario on top of Dominic knowing that "No" was going to be the only outcome. Siobhan lets him down easy, but leaves no doubt that she will never feel romance for him.
Key Hua Quan deserves the world, but look at this boy, bro gave his best act in this movie, & Banshees of Inisherin didnt get any oscar.

True. This was transformative acting. Key Hua Quan basically played himself: sweet, charming and earnest. But it wasn’t a big transformation.
This is just an incredible film. The fantasy of being with her, getting himself to where he can express it and then seeing the futility of it all expressed here is some of the the best acting I've seen in a really long time.
this movie should have win best original screenplay, i love EEAAO, but this script goes to straight to the heart, such a simple story going big and crazy, lovely

It would've been definitely well deserved too, I agree. But in my opinion, the overall craziness and originality of EEOAO made it worthy of that prize. I, however, would've given Best Director to Banshees.

There’s a lot of praise for Barry in these comments, and rightfully so, but Kerry does her part so naturally and with such subtlety, the slight crack in her voice as she responds with ‘i don’t think so’ - conveys the sorrow so central to this film that we cannot choose who we like to be with
Possibly, one of the greatest movies of the last years. Every character is important.
Barry keoghan is genuinely my favorite actor currently. Just incredibly talented
His character broke my heart. This whole movie was such an experience. I wish I could go back to 2022, to that little theater I went to after a 12 hour day, and see it all over again. I wish movies like this happened more often than every other year, but maybe they wouldn't be so special.
That line was so good it pulled me out of the movie, and I thought to myself that is the best delivered line in the history of cinema.
The ripping of the heart portrayed perfectly
This young actor's performance in this scene is something special.... Powerful and resonant. Talent!
As an Irish Islander- this guy’s performance is easily the best portrayal -with his candid emotional sincerity showing through a common Irish demeanour that we call ‘skeety’ where I live.. And though it would refer to sketchy folk - and despite his off-putting quality that is likely a representation of autism when it wasn’t identifiable.. there are many people I know who fit the categorization who are as kind hearted, and witty as his character. Kinda like how Mickey in Snatch turns out to be the cleverest - that kind of guy. Irish slang and prononciation can make the smartest people sound less intellectual also imo tbh.
Irish ‘street smarts’ and eccentricities always shine brightly. The one who appears to be s burnt out Irishman or Newfie can give you the best advice ever, be the best friend you have- common it is for sure.
Also I wonder how it sounds to non-Irish people who are unaware ‘never’ and ‘ever’ mean the same thing.

This is so so fascinating !! love hearing about all the unique qualities of language and culture especially with how they vary from larger regions v.s. smaller more isolated areas. cheers from california! 🇺🇸 Would absolutely love to visit one day if I could. Ireland has always seemed so beautiful and inviting to me - would love to see and experience especially more of the local parts if I could

Watching this scene in the cinema, I felt like I'd been kicked in the guts, truly winded by the unbearable, subtle emotion of it. Kerry and Barry's acting - so real.

This performance rips out my heart every time. Agonizingly perfect.
It's so weird, how the "There goes that dream" line in the script has an exclamation mark at the end, yet it is just so much more impactful with the way Keoghan says it. Maybe i'm reading into an exclamation mark too much, but it feels like he captures the emotion behind the line better than the script does.
He almost tosses away the line just as the dream must be discarded.
Her reaction shots are minimal but wonderful,she's being kind but hurting him at the same time.
This guys blow up is not at all shocking after seeing this movie. I’d never seen him before and when seeing this movie in theaters I was completely blown away. His performance in this was outstanding 💔
What an actor
Barry Keogh just makes your heart bleed in this. His talent paired with Martin McDonagh's writing means it's a winner.
The most heartbreaking part of the film... hopelessly devoted... I've already cried here inconsolably because you immediately know where he's going...❤

This story had so many emotions. This was a lovely written scene.
I love getting surprised by movies like these. Watched it having no idea what it was beforehand, was blown away. Such a good movie.

This guy's performance in this movie was something else. I did not expect Brendan Gleeson and Colin Ferrell to be outdone by anyone, and yet... frankly all the actors in this were incredible!
Barry's deviations from the script are ALL big improvements e.g. he does not emphasize "that" in "There goes that dream" as the script does, which would've been much worse. "Should have planned this really" is a great ad lib not in the script. He also cut the part about "bony little feet" which seems tonally wrong for the scene. Barry knows what he's doing.
"Should've planned this" was in the script, also an actor doesn't get to choose which lines he says and which he doesn't 😂 more likely some were cut in the editing room. But I like your first point 😁
@@MrLethalShots That's true but he did add "really" to "should've planned this" which is an improvement (edited comment to reflect that). I get that the actor doesn't have the final say but Barry likely ad-libbed the modifications (since they're not in the script) and McDonough liked them and kept them. In contrast, Kerry Condon's lines are delivered exactly as written.

Don’t know if anyone noticed in the beginning of the film Dominic asking Padraic what he thinks they use the hook for and at the end the old woman uses one to pull him out of the water
Our favorite line of entire movie was, "Well I'd best go over there and do whatever that thing over there I was going to do was." Just perfect from a pathos, humor, etc etc. Amazing actor. Amazing cast all the way around. Favorite movie of the year.

I loved EEAAO, and don’t begrudge it any of the Oscar wins it got. But I do wish Banshees had won a few that night. I thought for sure it would at least get best original screenplay.

Bloody roller coaster this film. It’s soo soo good
This movie, even though not set in Ireland really reminded me of Hemingway’s writing. The strong performances, script, the pastoral landscapes, the accents… this scene though… it’s the perfect “iceberg theory” on screen. There is so much going on in this scene but only a small percentage of it is visible. When you realize he was on the way to kill himself, it makes it much darker. His story was the most tragic, seeing his one crush at the end and her rejecting him.

Barry Keoghan is the new Sam Rockwell. Just a complete chameleon of an actor. So versatile.
"Look at this I found! A stick with a hook. What would you use it for I wonder? To hook things that are a length of a stick length away..." I knew the kid was doomed. Chekov's hooky stick.

There's a lovely and heartbreaking madness to this gem of a film. You laugh one minute, you cry the next. There's just so much "there" there. IMHO, it should have swept more like EEAAO did, though it was a good film. Didn't hit me like Banshees did though.

Heart-wrenching stories in the periphery. The focus, the 2 protagonists, have the least dramatic and tragic one.

That's why I love videos like this with the script and the scene together. You can really see what's written and then what choices the actors make in how they deliver those lines. Makes you really appreciate the talented ones like Barry a bit more.
Spoilers alert:
In the preceding scene, the inspector harshly confronted her, criticizing her appearance and asking, "Who will like you?" The following day, she contemplates his words while sobbing on her bed. The next morning, on the verge of taking her own life by jumping from a rock into the sea, Dominic intervenes, confessing his feelings for her. Touched by his declaration, she finds solace in the realization that someone loves her. Empowered by this newfound positivity, she decides to pursue her dreams, rejecting Dominic in the process. Heartbroken, Dominic, realizing he can never be with her, tragically ends his own life by leaping from the same rock into the sea. The poignant contrast lies in the unexpected turn of events, with the one preparing to die ultimately surviving, while the one who seemed to have hope succumbs to despair. It's a captivating and emotionally charged scene, contributing to the beauty of the overall movie.
Bro i was crying while watching this scene, Dominic is such a sweetheart like i wanna hug him and be his friend man you know? And after the ending like i prefer to think that he just fell and it was an accident and not suicide…

Heartbreaking. What a performance!
It's interesting to see how the script differs from final version, changes the tone. The final version cuts out lines from the script. Like in the script when he walks away he says something to her at the end. That was cut out. And what was chosen instead was him walking of silently looking back and taking off his hat.
"Well there goes that dream". How heartbreaking is that.
It’s, simply put, one of the best scenes I’ve ever seen in any film. Ever.

I saw this film 3x back to back, mainly because I LOVE everything about it, (and also hoping to catch the actual dialogue). On the 3rd watch, I caught that Peadar's (Dom's dad) earlier news about the 29yo man who killed himself in the river might have meant to ironically foreshadow Dom's own (possibly) suicide -since many has mentioned his 'hopelessness' story line. I am so sad for him. And this is such a good scene (among so many other fantastic scenes!)

If there was any justice in this world Barry Keoghan would’ve won the Oscar for this performance, although a BAFTA and a nomination ain’t bad. What a cast and crew all-round. It’s a superb, haunting film.
Barry Keoghan is improving on what Giovani Ribisi set out to achieve. He is quickly becoming my favourite actor of all time.
