  • MTD Kingston Z5:
    - Mahogany body with spalted maple top; Maple neck/board
    - Bartolini P252J Pickups wired in parallel and TCT-5.4AP preamp (can be ordered here: fatbasstone.com/products/bart...) with a quad buffer (I have my preamp and buffer wired with separate 9v batteires for each of them to allow for better battery life and to retain a "passive" mode where the preamp is bypassed, but the buffer still has power to allow the signal to pass through to the output jack)
    - Hipshot Vintage Style bridge and Ultralite tuners
    - D'Addario custom gauge Pro Steels
    Original Quad "Bright" P2 shape part number: XXP25CX-b (can be heard here: • Tobias Bass Classic 5 ... )
    Quad Buffer part number: TQB/918

    Great setup. Bartolini make killer electronics. I use a TCT in one of my J basses and it always gets good feedback.

    Feel like I'm stalking you but your doing the exact work I was getting ready to. What's you're favourite combo so far with pick ups, pre amp etc...what pickups come stock? I thought they were custom but figured they were similar to like mk1 or mk3.

    • @AdamSaylorBass
      @AdamSaylorBass  6 років тому +1

      Cliff Kindred there are 2 different sets of "stock" pickups for these basses. The regular Z basses come with Mike designed Korean electronics and the ZX basses come with Mike spec'd Bartolini pickups and an HR5.2AP Bartolini preamp. My favorite pickups with my HRTCT preamp were definitely the 2J Squared. The Mike spec'd pickups are great if you get them wired for parallel (they come wired in series), but I'd recommend going with an NTMB pre over the TCT as Mike's pickups are already bright and the treble boost built into the TCT mid knob was just a bit too much for me. If you want the older Tobias sound, I suggest going with pair of Original Quad neck pickups and my TCT preamp. The Original Quad neck pickups (especially with the pickups wired as p/reverse p) are the closest thing I've found to the original drop shoulder Tobias pickups that Bartolini still makes and my preamp is just a rebooted Tobias preamp. If you want the newer MTD sound, I suggest going with the ZX pickups wired in parallel and an HR5.4AP preamp wired for 18v with the NTMB+FL module (if you want more details on why this particular module you can email me, bass.saylor@gmail.com).

    Adam did you install the buffer with the jazz bass pickups (Bartolini Brights)?
    Also did you eventually change your Preamp on one of the basses to the NTMB Preamp?

    • @AdamSaylorBass
      @AdamSaylorBass  6 років тому

      Kenny Springs no I did not use a buffer for my jazz pickups, nor did I ever put an NTMB in any of my current MTD's. I'm still waiting on details to get in place for the next bass purchase. Can't talk much about it yet, but one of the outcomes has a bass with a version of an NTMB preamp.

    do you ever try the OriginalQuad (neck) and 2JSquared (bridge) or any thought or suggestions for this combination ?

    • @AdamSaylorBass
      @AdamSaylorBass  4 роки тому

      I did not try that. The biggest noticeable btwn the classic (2J Squared) and original (Quad Bright) series pickups is the amount of midrange in the sound. Bartolini's original pickups are much more mid-range heavy, darker sounding pickups, while the classic series have a more open sound with more lows/highs. Where the combo you are asking about could possibly get weird is when blend the pickups together, so be prepared for that if you decide to try it.

    • @marniel1779
      @marniel1779 4 роки тому

      thanks Adam, just curious..and i thought the combo will perform a powerful PJ bass with wider versatile sound, but i might not try it as i am not sure either :p

    • @AdamSaylorBass
      @AdamSaylorBass  4 роки тому +1

      @@marniel1779 if you are wanting the P/J thing in soapbar form, why not use the original quad in the neck (wired for P/reverse P switching) and the a J soapbar (split-coil J in a soapbar) for the bridge. That would give you both styles of P pickups and then the J when you wanted to do the P/J combination.

    You said a lot the bass sounds great what preamp are you using? and I like Stanley Clarke bright sound as well as the nice mids and low end
    I’m not sure if the original quad is the one or the J2 squared it’s for a 5 string skyline lakland made in idonesia🎸🌈

    • @AdamSaylorBass
      @AdamSaylorBass  3 роки тому

      IME, the 2J squared has more of the Ken Smith vibe to their tone, where the original quads have more of the Tobias vibe to them (especially a pair of neck pickups wired a certain way 😉) I use the same, custom spec TCT harness in most of my basses (this one included) 😁.

      @@AdamSaylorBass hi, i just bought a Cort a6 and i just thought that with the pickup placement, it might be possible to get close to a ken smith sound with a new pair of pickup. so should i go with bartolini squared then ? and if so, should i change the mk1 preamp too. not gonna lie, the pickup alone would be half the cost of the Cort so i didn't want to break the bank even more.

    • @AdamSaylorBass
      @AdamSaylorBass  Рік тому +1

      IMO, the preamp is the weakest part of the MK setup. You'll get way more change for your $$$ with a better preamp, so I would start there and see where you are.

      For this particular bass I used a vintage style bridge, but Hipshot now makes a B style bridge tailored to the stock Kingston bridge footprint (you're welcome 😉). I believe they refer to this color scheme as "bumblebee" (2 tone black/chrome). The tuners are their "HB6 Ultralite Bass Tuner - Y Key - 3/8 model" according to my invoice. The pickups are the P252J (wired in parallel) and my TCT-5.4AP preamp

    Adam, I want to replace mk1 in a bass and go after that mtd tone... which pickups are you suggesting I’m purchase... the mkcbc5 or the 2j squared

    • @AdamSaylorBass
      @AdamSaylorBass  4 роки тому

      Honestly, try leaving the pickups in and putting an 18v NTMB+FL preamp in there. The Mk1 pickups are bright wound reverse p pickups (similar to Mike's design) and the NTMB+FL has the same frequency centers as the preamp Mike uses.

    • @thomaslong6775
      @thomaslong6775 4 роки тому

      It has an Aguilar preamp, which I though was better than the one that came in it...the mk1 sound okay...but it’s missing that bottom and warmth and clarity of the mtd USA bases

    • @AdamSaylorBass
      @AdamSaylorBass  4 роки тому

      @@thomaslong6775 the weak point of the Mk1 system is definitely the preamp. The Aguilar is it's own animal, different from the MTD/Bartolini sound. You could also splurge and get the NS3TMB pre that Mike actually uses, but that's a hefty price tag and probably a bit of a wait as well.

    What does the switch control. Is it parallel - series- single coil. Or is it a 3 position mid switch?

    • @AdamSaylorBass
      @AdamSaylorBass  6 років тому

      Mattiniah27 that is the 3 way mid switch. It only controls 3 separate frequencies when boosting the mid knob, when you cut the mid knob it is the standard 300Hz cut per the usual TCT setup.

    • @roylambert9623

      Ok thanks I I saw your clip and had some J squares installed in my custom Combe bass. We installed a 3 position frequency knob and parallel series J bass switched. And it completely changed the sound of the bass it sucked. Since then I’ve been through 3 different pickups and pre’s. But I’m going back to the J square pickups and wire it the way you did. Thanks again for getting back to me.

    • @AdamSaylorBass
      @AdamSaylorBass  6 років тому

      Interesting. I know that my ear prefers parallel and I wasn't looking for a j bass tone out of this bass so it made sense to just hardwire the pickups in parallel and only have the mid switch.

    • @AdamSaylorBass
      @AdamSaylorBass  3 роки тому

      First off, I just want to make it clear that NOTHING else Bartolini makes is quite like Mike's proprietary pickups. That being said, the MK1 pickups are actually similar in design to Mike's (bright wound, reverse p coils). You should try putting an 18v NTMB+FL (same voicing as Mike's) preamp in that bass and see where it gets you.
