See, I kinda disagree that this is a good ending for Kiryu’s story. Kiryu’s entire arc in Yakuza 5 is him learning that putting distance between himself and the people he loves to “protect them” is bad for both him and his loved ones. Him choosing to fake his death at the end of Y6 feels like him regressing and forgetting what he’d previously learned. Also, don’t even make me get into how bad it is that Y6 puts Haruka into a coma for 90% of the story after spending her entire chapter in Y5 giving her agency and making her feel like a full person with her own story independent from Kiryu’s.
I probably mocked the fact that Haruka was in coma during my playthrough atleast 7-9 times because it made her just feel like a tool after what happened in Y5
Besides this it's a little weird that practically the first thing Haruka does upon going solo is get raw dogged by some dude. Like what? Haven't we gone on and on about how smart she is? This and the coma felt really silly to me, like oh yep not only is she silly she is also a vegetable. Great. Yakuza 6 is bit of a mixed bag for me. I love the Hiroshi Family and the Slice of Life moments. However, I’m divided on how the story played out. The conclusion made sense, but the beginning felt like a rehash of Yakuza 1 with Kiryu going to jail like him repeating the same mistake again. Also, Haruka was treated dirty in this game.

I do agree that some of the combat changes and the side content is lacking compared to some of the other entries, but the story is just so good that it makes up for it. I definitely enjoyed it returning to you just playing one character though. There's just something about seeing a character through one long journey that's incredibly satisfying. Anyways, keep up the good work, Son. Can't wait to see the next entry.

When converting Japanese words to a English alphabet "ei" is pronounced "ay" so yomei would be pronounced "yoh-may" it is "ai" that is pronounced as "eye".
man it feels sad for kiryu because can't be together with his family, just to protect them, but at least the guy is in peace. what a emotional ending for kiryu's plot line
Nagumo and the boys ended up being my favorite part of this game. The chubby guy doesnt get a lot of development, but Matsunaga was my favorite. He seems like a dumb brute, but his model ship building being paid off by the story with his father was actually heartbreaking. It was such a little touch that gave him depth and hints at the secret. I just love the gang, how they start off acting tough even though they're just a group of actual friends. But when shit gets real they all take it on. Best boys.
The sixth game is in my top half of the Kiryu Saga. This particular entry hits so hard because of the time we have spent with the older cast but the new group is just as wonderful. I remember tearing up several times throughout the story. The combat is kind of a step down (when you consider kiwami 2) but it's a minor gripe. This game has one of the best soundtracks in gaming too!
One of the biggest advantages of combat in this game is YOU CAN'T LOSE HEAT as they get stored in orbs. A lot of times in previous games I worked to build heat and it just disappeared by getting hit or time running out. I could never have fun unless i was chugging Heat potions.
Good job, son. Dad is sad to hear you didn't like the baseball game though. I thought it was pretty fun, and I live in a country where it barely even exists. I loved Kiryu's journey in the games and thought it ended pretty well. The one thing that always bugged me though was the way they handled Kaoru Sayama. It felt extremely cheap to build her up for an entire game and then send her off in an extremely contrived and unsatisfying manner. I honestly feel that left a bit of a pall over the rest of the games.
love the live chat mini game especially since it feature adult actress yua mikami, big fan of hers, the baseball team minigame was a lot of fun, the worst thing I can say about this retrospective series is lack of Amon, fighting him and his family in every game is always a highlight
I follow several gaming review and retrospective channels and recently found yours because of your epic Silent Hill piece. Even though I didn't play either Yakuza or Fable I have been enjoying your storytelling. Your videos have good writing, are well-structured and are well delivered. As I said good storytelling with important content.
Great story for 6, but I wasn't a fan of the combat. It got better in Kiwami 2, but still wasn't feeling it. They finally got it right for Judgement which I never got to play, and Lost Judgement which is my favourite combat in the Yakuza universe
I think I just hate stances cuz I preferred Kiwami 2 and 6's combat more than kiwami and 0(I couldn't get heat actions to pop with 0 when I played last month idk why). I ended up just using dragon soon as it was fully upgraded for kiwami and 0. I found the story ridiculous for 6 tho but I think that's cuz I was so fed up with 5's since I played 6 immediately after 5. I'm sure if I played 6 now I'd hate the story less and probably find the combat alittle more annoying.
Not my favorite Yakuza, but a really good one and an effective send off to the series' main protagonist. In a way, it felt to me like another attempt at the kinda intimate gangster story of Yakuza 3 in the same way Yakuza 5 had another attempt at the prison story from 4. Not a rehash, but another go, and I think it's better. Unfortunately for this game, I played Kiwami 2 and Judgment first, so I got to see how great the Dragon Engine would become and coming to this afterwards to witness its beginnings was a shock. Still, I loved it and also really liked having Kiryu fight not only Beat Takeshi, but mother-fucking Okada too!
Loving these retrospectives but it’s bothered the heck out of me in each one: anytime you see a Japanese word with “ei” in it it’s not pronounced “ai” like you’ve been saying, it’s pronounced “ayyy”. The “yo-may” alliance, not the “yo-mai”.
I wish you had spent at least a few more seconds talking about Kiryu's letter to Daigo, especially the part where not only does Kiryu say he thinks of himself as Kiryu's father, but that Daigo also evidently thinks the same given he calls him as much. To me that was one of the most emotionally hard hitting moments from Y0-6, the only moment on par being the resolution of Majima and Makoto's story in Kiwami 2. For some reason it seems the community tends to think it comes out of left field, but I think its a very important conclusion to the relationship Kiryu and Daigo have had across 6 games (given Daigo's absence in K1).
Kiryu sacrificed everything to the ones he loved to the point of protecting them till the very end. Very humbling and heart breaking 💔 at the same time.
I'll watch the video later, but I'll just say that I did not care for Yakuza 6 at all. It looks good, combat is pretty decent, I like the locations and that's kind of where it stops for me. A lot of series mainstays have disappeared (coliseum, gambling, fishing) and replaced with stuff that's frankly just not as fun (the cat cafe, spearfishing, cafe conversations), and the story lacks any sense of finality until the very end, and feels like a cheaper version of Y3... One thing that has always carried the story for me were the characters, which are kind of poor this time around, Someya being the exception for me. The whole 'secret of Onomichi' is just not very interesting and when that ship finally pops up, you need another 15 minutes of exposition to understand why the thing even matters... Being the mascot of Onomichi was a great quest though. The story sorely needed some input from Haruka herself, and sidelining Daigo and Majima was... not great, especially not since Majima's backstory in 5 raised a lot of questions. The entire story could also just be avoided if Kiryu just gets a damned lawyer at the beginning. Or if Yuta would just open his mouth. All in all, it feels like they just made 'yet another Kiryu story' and when they were done making it, someone said 'weren't we supposed to close his story this time around?' - 'crap you are right', and then went back to write an actual pretty touching ending that comes out of nowhere. The only other moment that was really great for me was storming the Millenium Tower and fighting Someya a final time. To me personally, there's nothing in which Yakuza 6 excels compared to the rest of the series. It's still a very good game, but I'd rank it very close to the bottom.
I skipped a bit through the video because I don't care much for how it's structered and noticed you think the Clan Creator is an 'upgrade' over the Majima Construction gameplay. Not going to watch the entire video to see if that was a mistake, but I hope you do realize that Kiwami 2 was released AFTER Song of Life...
I'll never understand the love this entry gets. 5 was a better ending to finish the series off with. 6's 'main story' (the secret of Onomichi) seems to come out of nowhere, and the family/friends part of the story, the part everyone talks about being great and emotional, IMO is just dumb. Akiyama is now a bum again, for reasons never satisfactorily explained. The Chinese mafia is targeting him, but why? He's not part of the Tojo clan and was only involved with them in 4 out of circumstance rather than choice. Even accepting that excuse it doesn't make sense going into hiding as a bum because anyone who knew he had connections to Tojo would also know about his connections to the bum's collective. Haruka apparently falls in love with Yuta and has a kid, and it's poorly told and extremely unearned. They make such a huge deal of 'who is the father' that when it's revealed its underwhelming times a million. Moreso, they're apparently in love but Yuta was sure the kid wasn't his because they only did it once, and I guess Haruka NEVER told him, like, that doesn't sound like love to me. Completely unearned. It felt like they came up with the idea of Kiryu taking care of a kid and wrote the story around that and didn't even take care when doing it. The Secret of Onomichi is hilarious and in line with the over the top stuff Yakuza is known for but there's little sense in the story around it. It basically comes out of nowhere surrounded by an exposition dump and the result of it being revealed makes no sense. A secret battleship being hidden, then it's brought out and yet at the end Kiryu is being offered money to keep it a secret? Like, from who, did the world not see the ship on the news? Also, Kiryu faking his death seems to go against the story of 5, where he realized he shouldn't just go into hiding to protect the ones he loved. Don't get me wrong, I don't HATE the game but it's not the fitting end the series needed for Kiryu. It's IMO easily the weakest story in all 7 Kiryu story entries and that's just a shame because even with the story here, it COULD have been a great end if the writing had been better and didn't feel as rushed as it did.
They tried to give Kiryu hush money not to keep the existence of the Yamato MK. II a secret. They wanted him to be silent about the origin of the ship which is the major issue at hand (which the game undersells very much.) Remember: This ship was built by using Chinese and Korean PoWs as work-force, and they embezzled money from the newly formed post-WW2 era government of Japan to finish it AFTER THE WAR HAD ENDED. This would be a gigantic storm of multiple multi-national scandals which would involve, at least, 2 major world powers and a good bunch of broken treaties they had with them which would affect a lot of politicians that are still active in Japans political landscape in some shape or form. Japan could still play dumb and pretend to have not a single clue where on earth the Yamato MK.II came from as long as nobody knows about it's history which could help them avoid the catastrophic fallout of its revelation, and Kiryu, at the end of Y6, is the only one left who could tell its tale. That's why the things happen the way they do at the final scenes of the game.
@@dinsdag6juli2010 There is a slight chance that either A: The government doesn't know that Nagumo and the rest are aware about the history of the Yamato MK.II, or B: because Nagumo and co are very, very low ranked Yakuza nobody would believe them this, unlike Kiryu who might be viewed as more believable because of his history. (yes, I'm aware I'm grasping at straws here)
Just finished the game and was surprised by how lackluster this entry felt. Like we went from the longest yakuza game, with Yakuza 5 taking me like 80 hours finish, to the shortest one, which I finished in just 25. This being the end of Kiryu's story, I was extremely disappointed by the lack of recurring characters which are some of Kiryu's best friends, like Majima, Saejima, Daigo, Kazuki, the Florist of Sai, Yuya... Some of them are here but barely present. We instead focus on a new family in a small town which I didn't get invested in since they already had the same formula in Yakuza 3. There is also very little minigame compared to previous entries, with only two major mini games, the Clan creator and the baseball mission (which I didn't go into because it just didn't interest me). Also, the fact that the substories are not marked on the map means that I missed most of them even though I tried to do as many as I found. I still loved some of the aspect of the stories and some of the new characters like Nagumo, Kiyomi and Someya, but the rest of them felt boring to me and one dimensional to me. I also feel that the combat system is really lacking compared to the other games, in previous titles you could use weapons, different stances, had multiple characters with different movesets... Now you just play as Kiryu, with one stance, no weapons, and only a few heat moves...
Well done as usual, Son. I didn't Like very much the story, since all of the historic characters of the series were marginal if not not present at all. Especially Haruka, this should have been her entry, but she's not awake almost the whole game. The action piece sections were really Cool, but even the gameplay was a bit meh, especially After 5. I really recommend you the GCVazquez video about Y6 which expresses the weird choices and the inherent racism inside this entry. Well done
I loved this game like all others in the series, but it was always weird to me that the kid actually was Haruka's son. I'd always wished it turned out he was someone else's, and she was just taking care of him in the real mother's stead, as Kiryu had taken care of Haruka for Yumi. Like, we'd known this girl since she was little more than a toddler and watched her grow up. I don't want to think about her actually getting together with someone and producing a child. I know she's actually 19 in this game, but it still feels creepy to me. Despite my complaints about that, I otherwise loved this game and especially the side content. And this game had some of the best substories in the series in my opinion. My favorite is without a doubt The Kabedon Prince. It got some of the biggest laughs out of me from the entire series. The phrase "You're not going home tonight" will never leave my head.
Worst game of the franchise, despite the beautiful graphics. The secondary characters, the villains, the plot, the voice-acting, the fights... it all sucks hard.

@@seunglee6990 i guess, with the sheer amount of times i've heard names mispronounced despite those names being said in-game
yakuza 6 is a mini battle royale reunion- Tatsuya Fujiwara (Yuta Usami) and Takeshi Kitano (Toru Hirose)
man it feels sad for kiryu because can't be together with his family, just to protect them, but at least the guy is in peace.
what a emotional ending for kiryu's plot line
It was a race between you and Tehsnakerer to see who would get to Y6 first. Regardless, I'll still end up watching both.
My main thing is where the fuck was Majima and Saejima the whole time when the traitorous Sugai was running the clan??
weren’t they in jail throughout the entire game?
Nagumo and the boys ended up being my favorite part of this game. The chubby guy doesnt get a lot of development, but Matsunaga was my favorite. He seems like a dumb brute, but his model ship building being paid off by the story with his father was actually heartbreaking. It was such a little touch that gave him depth and hints at the secret. I just love the gang, how they start off acting tough even though they're just a group of actual friends. But when shit gets real they all take it on. Best boys.
Dadoji and yamay alliance lmao. Bro the game says both names numerous times. It's 'die-do-ji' and 'yo-mey'
also 'Somaya'
The sixth game is in my top half of the Kiryu Saga. This particular entry hits so hard because of the time we have spent with the older cast but the new group is just as wonderful. I remember tearing up several times throughout the story. The combat is kind of a step down (when you consider kiwami 2) but it's a minor gripe. This game has one of the best soundtracks in gaming too!
6 wasn't terrible for me but i still think kiryus story should have ended with 5. It was a better story with a great open ending.
that wouldn't have been satisfying at all
@@FuraFaolox wouldve been much better than 6
@@ExValeFor 6 is great
One of the biggest advantages of combat in this game is YOU CAN'T LOSE HEAT as they get stored in orbs. A lot of times in previous games I worked to build heat and it just disappeared by getting hit or time running out. I could never have fun unless i was chugging Heat potions.
Lmao we all thought it was the end
Good job, son. Dad is sad to hear you didn't like the baseball game though. I thought it was pretty fun, and I live in a country where it barely even exists.
I loved Kiryu's journey in the games and thought it ended pretty well. The one thing that always bugged me though was the way they handled Kaoru Sayama. It felt extremely cheap to build her up for an entire game and then send her off in an extremely contrived and unsatisfying manner. I honestly feel that left a bit of a pall over the rest of the games.
I love that Kiryu calls Iwami a baby while in the presence of a literal baby.
Did this game give anyone else nostalgia for vacationing in sleepy seaside towns and relying on the locals to find your way around? 😅
Can't wait for your 7 video. It's probably my favorite of the series. The cast is so damn good.
love the live chat mini game especially since it feature adult actress yua mikami, big fan of hers, the baseball team minigame was a lot of fun, the worst thing I can say about this retrospective series is lack of Amon, fighting him and his family in every game is always a highlight
I follow several gaming review and retrospective channels and recently found yours because of your epic Silent Hill piece. Even though I didn't play either Yakuza or Fable I have been enjoying your storytelling. Your videos have good writing, are well-structured and are well delivered. As I said good storytelling with important content.
The end of the Kiryu Saga as well as the debut of a new engine.
Love you son
Loving these retrospectives but it’s bothered the heck out of me in each one: anytime you see a Japanese word with “ei” in it it’s not pronounced “ai” like you’ve been saying, it’s pronounced “ayyy”. The “yo-may” alliance, not the “yo-mai”.
0:30 Boy that didn't age well.

Hey son, it's me your favourite Dad
A wrestling and Red Velvet fan? You're a good Reveluv, son.

JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I WAS OUT THEY PUUULLL ME BACK IN! the game
I just finished Yakuza 6 and immediately came here. Putting this as #1 ahead of Kiwami 2.
I'll tell you this. The two series that need the most explanation are metal gear solid and Kingdom hearts lol
Nice job son, keep up the good work!
Amazing work, son. Thank you for taking the time to take us through Kiryu's story. Can't wait to see what you make of the rest!
Kiryu sacrificed everything to the ones he loved to the point of protecting them till the very end. Very humbling and heart breaking 💔 at the same time.
You're my favorite son named my favorite son
There comes a time in every story where the tale must end. This…is not that time.
Good video son, you’re really producing a lot of good content rn
@@dinsdag6juli2010 it’s not really an upgrade since 6 came first but alright
I'm glad Onomichio has become a staple of Yakuza.

@@maskedhobo because it's not an unconnected series where you can just start wherever
@@FuraFaolox Didn't ruin the series for me.
They wanted him to be silent about the origin of the ship which is the major issue at hand (which the game undersells very much.)
Remember: This ship was built by using Chinese and Korean PoWs as work-force, and they embezzled money from the newly formed post-WW2 era government of Japan to finish it AFTER THE WAR HAD ENDED.
@@EnerKaizer But the exposition is also told to Nagumo and the other guys.

Well done
5 "is the end of Kiryu and Haruka's story this is just a fever dream Kiryu had in hospital
It's the only way I can accept some of the Story beats.
Saying "reflects kiwami 2" implies this came afterwards. Kinda crappy writing on your part.
Well, turned out that it's not the end of Kiryu's story after all.
Worst game of the franchise, despite the beautiful graphics. The secondary characters, the villains, the plot, the voice-acting, the fights... it all sucks hard.
