Mikey i absolutely LOVE YOU... I love your videos your humor. Your Amazing. You make this 52 yr old crocher smile with each video. God bless you. And Than You
Thank you, Mikey for answering my question about the use of acrylic in my kitchen items! I figured it would melt or burn, but I had no idea about the water problems. So, I’ll just stick to using cotton in the kitchen!!! ♥️ from Texas!
I’m. So happy for the education on this subject! I always use cotton for my kitchen items, but I’ve often wondered about using acrylic yarn. I’ve always worried it would burn or melt, lol.
I use the dishcloths as my learning new stitches sampler. Instead of getting into a big project or using my acrylic yarn to try out new stitches. It's easy and makes something useful, and if you have to frog it's not a big deal.
Have you thought of selling the dish cloths? It would bring in a sizeable little income for you, you are helping the planet and people's outlay. The Creative Village here in the Lower Hunter Region of Australia, sells them for locals. It's in a big shopping mall.
My first time watching you. I must say that you are darling and have the best voice. Today I purchased Bernat OGO so I can make the hanging basket! Thank you for sharing!
I totally agree with The Crochet Crowd, cotton yarn is the best for kitchen use. 3 years ago I bought 5 cotton yarn dishcloths knitted by locals to replace the Wettex sponges and all the other products for wiping up in the kitchen that were not worth buying. I think the cotton dishcloths I bought and love giving to people will outlive all of us 👏🌞. For a few years now I use dish soap in a soap shaker instead of bottled detergent to cut down plastic. In winter not so cold here I'll add 1 drop of citronella essential oil to the washup water to kill bacteria lurking in the cloth if it gets that smell. One of the soap bars has it and it works. Thank you for a colourful show 💖🌈
Hi Mikey! Hope your weekend has been good so far. I just want to say how much I love watching your channel. You explain very well, you illustrate at my speed most of the time and explain about the different kinds of yarn and what project looks better with what hook, matching this or that yarn. You are my favorite!
Hi Mikey I'm a brand new member. I have M.S. and am relearning crochet because this disease has messed up my hands. I am so thankful for you! And I love your other videos too with your cat, dog and partner - is his name Daniel? You are a breath of fresh air. Right now I'm working on the Ocean Wave afghan. Oh my goodness Mikey, you are a funny boy. Thanks for the entertainment and I actually learned a few things I always made dish cloths with cotton but I didn’t know it resisted heat and I didn’t know you could not put it in the microwave. 😱
Mikey, you really are special ♥️ Thanks for this wonderful video! Oh, and thanks for the information, I love to make washcloths from cotton, because I can try all the new stitches and actually use, what I created. Thats fun because that doesn't add too many unfinished projects ;) Hugs!!!
I just find out that Mikey is Canadian.I was alwasy think that you are an American I am so happy we are from the szme country I love yarn , knitting and crochet are my passion . Take care
I agree with everything you’ve said except for using acrylic yarn for dish cloths. I have found my experience (and the experience of my crochet group) to be the opposite. Acrylic dries faster and tends to be “scrubbier” than cotton. I love cotton for all things kitchen except for dish cloths. Dish cloths made with acrylic are amazing IMO- easy to wash and last for years.
Muchas gracias por la información, a mi me gusta el algodón mas que el acrílico, pienso que el algodón 100 mercerizado le da mejor acabado a las prendas.
That's funny. I've done a dry time test using both cotton and acrylic dish rags (same size/stitch) side by side and acrylic DEFINITELY dried faster and smelt less. I prefer acrylic washcloths in the shower just for this reason.
@@TheCrochetCrowd peaches & Cream, 24/7 and bernat softee cotton for the cotton and red heart super saver for the acrylic. 24/7 cotton lasted the longest before smelling. I couldn't really get the red heart to stink unless I left it soaking wet in a pile for a couple days.
Thank you so much for making this video, I have been Knitting and crocheting for years and was never too sure about the differences and usage of these types of products when making certain yarn projects. Do you think using cotton yarns would be a better option when making make up removal wipe projects?
My two cents, for what it's worth lol (I don't wear makeup, so not an expert) I would definitely go with cotton. Many makeups have some oils in them and acrylic attracts and holds onto oils. I think your homemade removal pads would get gross if not washed every time, and they would get destroyed quickly because of oils and repeated laundering. Cotton is so much more sturdy.
I don't know about that. I would think Cotton would be better as people usuallyuse cotton wipes to remove make up. So it might make sense but you would have to wash them for sure.
Hey Mikey, love your info. What do you think of the bamboo mix yarn for dish cloths and tea towels? Oh ! By the way I love 🥰 to entertain people who love 💗 to wash dishes ❣
That's a really good point about getting stinky! I put an acrylic scrubber in the microwave (with some antibacterial for hands, justfor good measure!) It flamed out on me and I have to scrape the plastic goo off the glass microwave plate. Good times. 😒
I use acrylic to make small, sponge-sized cloths just to wash dishes with. They are slightly rough and easy to hang onto. I much prefer the acrylic to cotton in this instance. They last forever and I just get a new one every day and throw them in the wash with towels.
Always make mine out of cotton. Mine are double duty. When they get get stained and old. I give them to my husband to use in the garage. That gives me an excuse to make more. 😉 👍
I found "I love Cotton" at Hobby Lobby - it is so much softer than Peaches and Cream or the other one. I had to quit using them because they bothered my hands while crocheting or knitting.
Mickey thanks for the informative video. I have another question about cotton yarns, are all cotton yarns colorfast? Or do you need to set the color after you make your dishcloth ? If so, how do you do that?
I don't know that answer but soaking in vinegar water should hold the colour as you do that for dying yarn. I'm not 100% certain but I think that is right.

I'm not sure I have any recommendations for that. Cotton is generally pretty dense.
Totally .

After thought, whats the best stitch for dish cloths? I have a desire to make these but no clue for stitch n size hook n dimensions/density ect..
I prefer a faux popcorn stitch. It has a bit of texture without being crazy aboutit.

Thanks for sharing!! Cotton is kinda tough on the hands as it's more durable.
What about cotton acrylic blends or cotton and bamboo blends for dish rags?
I haven't used Bamboo. So I don't have a perspective on using that to know. I'm sorry.
What about cotton vs wool? Which is better for a tea cozy? Or heat and water retention?
Wool I wouldn't use. It's a lot more expensive. Stick to the cotton. Cotton holds in heat as well.
How do you keep the cotton dish cloths from starting to smell? I wring them out and hang them to dry, sometimes its fine, other time, p u
Depends on what you are washing of course. I usually wash our linens on Mondays.
