it's obvious they let him in there not coz of his baking skills but coz it's good television.
Imagine not having slept in 36 hours, being on the verge of a break up with your girlfriend, totally depressed, and still being this funny. I can’t believe it. Comedy just runs through his veins.
The Good One podcast he did where he talks about this is absolutely spectacular.
I don't find it respectful for people who knew what's happening behind the curtain to call it "still being this funny" and "it runs through his veins". The guy was battling dark thoughts.
Imagine how'd he feels. "Hey man, sorry to hear about what you went through during this event. But wow. You're still funny despite all of that! Awesome!"
Commedians are prone to depressions. Well, some types of commedians. Those are basically philosophists who are trying to change people's opinions and statement about things they find intolerable through humor.
The laughs and the jokes are being used to mask pain.

I think Paul probably had a lot of fun experiencing someone this bad at baking come on bake off and be completely unintimidated by him, tbh. James did not come to impress with his baking, he was dragged in and decided to be the funniest person on the whole show while grumbling the whole time, which is so DIFFERENT from a regular contestant that I bet they all enjoyed it a bit extra.
Hollywood was utterly baffled by James, but by the end he couldn't help liking him.
For a second I thought you were referring to the place and I was confused, but hopeful, he started to get more popular in the US 😂

He was actually going through a bad breakup and he said 2017 was the worst year of his life. He called Samaritans a couple of times that night and the other contestants were told to be nice to him and were made aware if his situation. While very funny, it's actually kind if sad.
@@Chargede i don't think any of them knew he'd been on the phone to Samaritans or that he was having a really hard time. They just thought he was a bit sensitive after he said "this doesn't feel nice"

Paul’s “I think it’s brilliant, James” was humanity at its finest. I think all of us need a Paul to look at us and tell us that “it” is brilliant, at some point in our lives.
James seemed genuinely touched by that, I think at that point he really needed someone to just tell him, "You're doing alright, lad."
Paul was great throughout.
He should just have a show where it contrives these situations every episode. His standup is okay, but his conversational comedy is out of this world.

@@AleksBen36 I know this is quite a bit later, and you may have heard this already, but he was running on 36 hours without having slept, and had really bad jetlag from traveling. ("The worst jetlag I've ever had in my life" as he put it)
And that is on top of the breakup thing, so yeah, a really bad week is kind of an understatement. Lol

He has a 4-part, 4-hour Netflix special that's maybe the most brilliantly sustained piece of standup I've ever seen. Maybe second only to the first time I saw Steven Wright live and by the 90-minute point, I desperately wanted him to stop because my entire torso was in dreadful pain because of constant laughing.

What I love about this is how it shows that oftentimes some of the funniest, sarcastic people are people who are experiencing some mental anguish. I know during some of the worst parts of my life, the high that came from making others laugh got me through the hour.

Just watched James' new special where he talks about how he hadn't slept in 36 hours before the filming of Bake Off and it explains a lot.
It's a whole new experience knowing the context.
Having seen his comedy special, and knowing he had been awake for like 30 hours and was sick... well, this makes a lot more sense.

Comedians like Acaster have a gift and a curse, they can take their utter anguish and turn it around and make it funny while feeling like they're dying inside. I came here right after watching Cold Lasagna Hate Myself 1999. Acaster walks the line between tragedy and comedy like a tightrope. He's brilliant, but there is clearly a cost.

I imagine it has something to do with being a charity/fundraiser episode. In what regard, I don’t know, but that seems to be the only identifiable difference between this and the episodes on Netflix.
@@justinotherday6199 This was for a televised fundraiser called Stand Up To Cancer, we do this in the UK every year. The normal Great British Bake Off is year round.

His girlfriend at the time had not left him yet. He called her from 12-1:30 the night between the two days of filming. And that girlfriend he had been dating for five months. Not the same as the girlfriend who left him for Mr. Bean. He dated her in 2013, and they lived together in a shitty flat.
He asked us all not to spoil the show man.

James has a hilarious stand up bit on this experience. Apparently, he was horribly jet lagged and hadn’t slept for 36 hours. He mentioned this fact on camera multiple times, but they edited it out, making him look like a chaotic mess. Still, I imagine that he earned some new fans … since his comments that did make it are comedic gold.
It’s on UA-cam, so I definitely recommend giving it a watch!
In his standup special, James talked about this and what was going on in his life around the time this was filmed, and he talked about how it went viral. I hope he understands that a big reason it went viral is because a lot of us found this relatable -- I think it's fair to say "Started baking, had a breakdown, bon appetit" has become a meme at this point. Like, I think a lot of people have had the experience of having to muddle our way through a difficult series of tasks while going through one of the worst days of our lives.
I am so gay for James, it's unbelievable how cute and funny he is.
