I love your sewing book and can see how you were completely absorbed in designing and making it. All of your materials were beautiful and you came up with some creative ways to use them for practical purposes. Thanks to you, I now enjoy watching Penny and Marion, both of whom are incredibly talented!

Love your sewing kit. Isn’t it amazing how addictive the thought of owning such a thing becomes! I also want one very much, just to have and look at and feel even if I never use it 😂. I’m currently looking at fabric I have and wondering about making one. Both yourself and Marion have such a gentle, relaxing way of sharing your hobbies. Thank you 😊

What a beautiful sewing book, Helen!! Your elementary needle case was charming too. Before you showed your new creation to us I thought it would be about 4”x5”. Wow! What a great size, and the addition of the scissors came right after I was thinking they would be a great addition. I appreciate how mannerly your chicken was. She was listening as intently as the rest of us. Thanks for the shopping trip. You know exactly what we want to look at! Take care.

Thank you, Linda! I am completely in love with my new sewing kit - I aimed for a size that would contain a fair number of things but not be too big - it feels just about right! The chicken was very attentive, wasn't she? 😂 I'm glad you enjoyed the shopping trip, too! xx

I just love the way both of your sewing projects turned out! I know you will get a lot of use out of each of them. They are one of a kind and reflect your personality in the fabrics you chose and the way you put everything together. The stitches on the sewing kit really add so much to the design. When I see hand stitching like this, I want to pick up my double wedding ring quilt and work on it. One of these days when I'm not knitting or crocheting, right? I can't wait to see what you make next! Take care! Hugs, Patti 🙂

Helen, your projects today are fabulous! That quilt as you go hexie bag turned out brilliantly. The gnomes are so cheerful and you did a great job fussy cutting them and getting the bag assembled. I have a hard time with sewing math and have to get my hubby's help on occasion. I would have to admit that determining a diameter of a circle for a bag bottom is the reason I have not made a bucket bag.🙄🤔
The slow stitch kit you purchased is beautiful. And your sewing book is gorgeous! Great job on all the embroidery. The book looks so functional, too. 😍 I have to make sure to watch that episode from Marion. I love little projects like this that are as practical as they are beautiful. Maybe it's time to up my game from a notions pouch to a sewing kit.
The market looked fun. I enjoy a good craft fair or flea market or antique store. Always something fun or unique to see. Thanks for sharing.
See you next week. Take care.🤗

Thank you so much, Karen! I was so pleased with how these two projects worked out! The sewing kit is already proving very useful. Marion's tutorial is definitely very inspiring.
I was absolutely amazed when the circular base of the bag fitted perfectly!!! My son showed me that just by putting "diameter of circle if circumference is 58cm" into Google, the correct answer appears! Who would have thought it would be possible.
I'm glad you enjoyed the little trip to the market, too! See you next time xx

I really enjoyed your vlog again today Helen. What simply gorgeous fabrics in that box and a lovely sewing book project - makes me want to do more sewing. I have been teaching my 3 young granddaughters (5, 6 and 9 yrs) to sew with good old fashioned Binca and some spare yarn - they love it. We have yet to break out the felt but may do so later in the week. Thank you for all your great video clips.

Thank you, Rachel. I was so pleased with the lovely selection of fabrics in that box and very happy with how my sewing kit turned out! How lovely to be teaching your granddaughters to sew! I can highly recommend a book called Crafty Creatures by Jane Bull, written for children who are just beginning to sew and knit - it includes a project using binca and others using felt (and much more!) I've been using the book with my nieces since they were the same age as your granddaughters. xx

I love your hexagon bag🥰. So perfect for carrying projects. The fabric in the sewing book is adorable and your finish makes me jealous of my attempts at hand sewing. I do hand sew little pillow finishes for my small cross stitch pieces. I get frustrated with the sewing machine, it always seems to outwit me🤣. And as to that lovely market….the metalwork hedgehogs and mice, adorable. Another wonderful video, thank you🪡🪡🪡

Hi Helen, what a beautiful needle work book. I too have been watching Marion’s podcasts and love the way she does her slow stitching. Once I’ve finished all these blankets for the six grandchildren I’m going to give it a go. I keep my eye open for thing that I might like to use in the charity shops. Thanks once again for taking me home in your video Tynemouth market) good to see it’s still going. Take care Doreen ❤

    Dear Helen,
What a joy it was watching you talk about your sewing! I can totally relate to the joy you feel after having completed a project and I see why you would treasure your cute gnome bag and your charming sewing kit! I used to hand sew dolls and I know how much love and time one puts in every stitch and I admire the work you've done!
I'm knitting on my first colourwork sweater and I hope it'll be done for our Woolfest which is at the end of May. I hope it's done soon! I'm on the body and thats a lot of boring brown!
Anyways, looking forward to the next episod ewhere you'll show your second donkey!

Helen, your makes are stunning and feel just like the hen sitting by you - cuddly, squishy, worthy of stroking! Well done on the sewing of the hexies. What fun you had. Of course it all boiled down to the right size cake tin for success!! I remember just a few episodes back you said you were finding french knots tricky and I wanted to say 'hold the thread tighter'. You obviously found that technique as there were so many on your sewing book. Your mum must be so pleased to see the end result with the gorgeous embroidered stitches. (I know she is a wonderful seamstress with everything so organised). Does Phil appreciate your work?
The market looked so interesting and I loved so much that you showed me the unusual things to buy. A lovely place to wander around on a rainy day.
Oh, forgot to say the fabric from your box may have come from Elmhirst Fabric. Anne put me on to them some time ago as she purchased fabric from them and I have recently done the same for a quilt for Tommy.
Lovely to see you, Take care. xx

Thank you, Pene! I gained such a lot of pleasure from all the hand sewing that I did for these projects and it's almost a bonus to have ended up with two very useful items! I'm happy that you have observed an improvement in my french knots! I think my mum is pleased at the improvements in my embroidery skills, too... though I continue to be in awe of the beautiful things that she creates with needle and thread! Phil seems to enjoy seeing what I make, too.
I'm looking forward to catching up with your latest podcast - I have just returned from a lovely trip to Perth, Scotland - and thought of you, of course, because I remember you saying that you have friends there! Once a year I meet up with my friend Margaret who lives on Skye, and Perth is very roughly half way between Durham and Skye. I hope to put together a little travel vlog about what we got up to... Oh Helen - that was just so inspirational! For some reason seeing your slow stitching made it seem easier than others I have watched and will be getting my stuff out and having a go. May be it’s the piano music (which I love) and no talking. As for the hexagon bag - adorable. Will be a total copycat and make one out of the same fabric as I still haven’t used it. Will watch again to see how the top bit is done. You could make a pattern/tutorial out of both of these makes and sell them. I would definitely buy them. I will look at Marion’s work as well. Your embroidery is lovely. If you want more tutorials head to Sarah Homfrey’s channel. May I ask the measurements of the main piece of fabric? The market looked wonderful and definitely something I would want to visit. Have a lovely rest of the week and weekend. X.

Thank you, Lesley - I'm so glad you enjoyed this episode! I would be flattered if you made a hexagon bag the same as mine! Maybe I should seriously consider making a pattern for it! I will definitely give it some thought. My fabric, for the "cylinder" part of the bag that's made from hexagons and half hexagons is 58cm in length and the circle for the base has a diameter of 18.5cm. If you have any more questions, just get in touch and I'll be happy to help! Thank you for recommending Sarah Homfrey! Have a lovely week and Easter! xx

Your housewife is beautiful, Helen, and so practical and well thought out. I love the little flap for clips😍 But sweetest of all was your super cute pin keeper with its adorable toadstool🍄🤩
What a brilliant idea to use your hexagons to make a project bag! I love how it stands up on its round base. Now you've made me want to learn how to work out the diameter of a circle when I have the circumference... This would actually be a really useful formula to know when making anything with a circular top or bottom. I made a brimmed hat once but felt the crown was too deep. The walls of the crown were tapered, so I couldn't just cut a whack off the height - that would make the top circle too small. If I learnt this formula, I could adjust the pattern!
Now to go and pester the nearest mathematician😂
Thanks for another great podcast, Helen❤

    • @mousiemakespod
      @mousiemakespod  5 місяців тому

Thank you, Shirley. A little tip for finding the diameter of a circle which my son told me: go to Google and type in something like "diameter of a circle with circumference of 58cm" and Google will just give you the answer!!! Strange that, in this day of AI at our fingertips, I still first seek a known human for advice and help.
I've been reading the "Little House on the Prairie" series lately for fun and for old times' sake. I had a good chuckle just yesterday. Let me type the passage here, so you can enjoy the irony too:
[There had been repeated blizzards, and supplies were running very very low. Their lamp had spluttered and gone out and they had no more lamp oil.]
      ...
"If only I had some grease I could fix some kind of a light," Ma considered. "We didn't lack for light when I was a girl, before this new-fangled kerosene was ever heard of."
"That's so, '" said Pa. "These times are too progressive. Everything has changed too fast. Railroads and kerosene and coal stoves - they're good things to have but the trouble is, folks get to depend on 'em."

The drawstring pouch bag was lovely, Helen. It can be used in so many ways. Your sewing kit is gorgeous. I was given a felt paged satchel for my crochet and sewing essentials a few years ago. It's time I made one of my own so now I have your demonstration I will. Thanks for showing soldiers' kits. They mended everything. I spoke with a cousin who has been a committed seamstress for years. Although her husband has not had a military background she told me he finds mending relaxing and has always had a kit which rolls up and ties. She sews of an evening and, when the need arises, he mends, replaces buttons etc. Thank you for a glimpse of the Tyneside markets... they do well to set up the market each weekend💌💐
