Adapting books into tv shows is not an easy task. For this list, we’ll be looking at common issues and difficulties with TV adaptations of books for those who make them, those of us who watch them, and the original authors. Some of the difficulties include the screenplay. Novels can take a long time to write; as long as years in many cases. Television has a much more brisk turnaround, so many TV adaptations of books have gotten to the point where they overtake their source material, forcing the creation of original material. Another difficulty is that you can’t talk about spoilers!

the biggest problem with adaptations are first few seasons are sticking to the source material
but later are only consisted of fan service rather than story-telling
Hunter PREACH 🙌🏾
I'll tell you the real problem: Too many of the fantasy stories are being adapted to live action in instead of being animated.
I would love to see a good fantasy story turned into a 2D animated movie or series. I would even enjoy it, if one was done by Don Bluth.
Would be interesting to see the Top 10 TV shows adopted from Books.
Did that
Searching - Thanks James. If you find it, you can respond on here with the link. That would be greatly appreciated.

Perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they look nothing like what they are described in the book
Totally! There's always a moment when your vision of the book or its characters doesn't align with the casting director's or set designers' choices!
Caitriona Quigley yes, most people don't understand that!
that's why I always see movies/tv shows as one thing and the book as another and I have different opinions on both of them when they are really different
The problems are EVERYTHING
Seriously, TV shows have NO obligation to be exactly identical to the books. People should get that by now.
what your book
Books are always canon , but sometimes the show can improve the story of the book like the 100 did
I disagree with #7 . There is enough time for character development . IF you don’t have too many main characters .
I've Always felt the books are more in depth and able to get into the characters mind then the movie/tv. I really get pissed when they Change sooo much.😑
Surprised there are no scenes from a handmaids tale on here
Got was perfectly done but season 7 had it's flaws shine through (which were also in the seasons before but they are less noticeable)mainly with the kit snow gang fighting the army of the dead and the "prophecy" bullsheit.
GoT was giid cause each week had a surprise, while S7 was almost all super predictable so tons of people did everything to avoid the leaked spoilers when in the end the events were all as plain and boring as you can have.
PLL had all of these!
Gregory House I love Pretty little liars :)
Well the one good thing about GoT is they know the ending. GRRM has told them how the story goes and ends in the event that he doesn't get to finish the series
this is why Hollywood should wait until the whole series is done before adapting it. Expected to see clips from The Walking Dead on here
This is really good to know. I've finally started writing a book based on a story that has been progressing in my head for a long time.
13 reasons why only had one book and yet there are two seasons. There maybe a third season.
THE PROBLEM IS EVERYTHING!
An addition to the story that is the exception is Daryl Dixon into the TWD story .
the real question is how are animated series able to follow a plot . Even if budget was a constraint , there still is the question of constant revisions and writing out of characters/ plot points that happens alot.
Who else can agree that tv producers don't always line up with character descriptions. For example, Legend of the Seeker (based on Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series) has the main villain years younger than he should be, the best friend nowhere near as large & imposing as book has him appear, & forgot one of the major character development points of recent murders. It's a good thing that tv show was canceled, only bad part is it took two seasons to get there
I came because of thumbnail 😉
Hey ms mojo👋
For #2, one major problem for tv shows is when the books use a lot of foreshadowing. For example, if one scene is book one is completely irrelevant, when people make a show about it later, suppose around book 4 or 5, they could leave it out. However, they might reference that scene with importance in book 6 or 7. This is especially a problem with the Durarara!! series.
Thirteen reasons Why is such a good book! But I feel like the TV show ruined the book's reputation.
dont agree with that old saying that the book is always better. as i have seen cases where both movie or book can be better. and as there such different mediums there. are great things in both that you cant get in the other. the cutting of stuff is just key for a visual medium. but with that you can get changes that can make the film better in some ways or worse. and if you two differnt versions of the story i guess you can say there two differnt canons.
I haven't seen one good book to tv show adaptation. Unlike the movies, they RARELY follow the books. TVD and Shadowhunters was ruined for me.
You are soooooo helpful
Brilliant
Differences Between Comic Book and Novel Adaptations. Superhero stories are meant to be episodic ongoing adventures. Book adaptations such as Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Narnia, Earthsea, Lord of the Rings, detective books, manga, horror, western, slasher, and sci fi novels. On the hand, are not episodic ongoing stories like superheroes. There once in a lifetime experience. They are meant to alter changes to the source material. People have to deal with it. Novel adaptations are meant for die hard fans, scholars, and librarians alike. Changes to their source material need to occur. To feel justified. Even if novel readers don't like the changes. Too bad. What is the point of adapting them in the first place? It doesn't matter if the novel creators aren't involved, it's okay. Being book accurate is no longer an excuse anymore. You can't judge book adaptations. If they alter book adaptations, changes it's source material to fit the runtime, I am not arguing about it. Producers, do your own thing. Creative interference needs to happen. "Film and tv directors, you cannot get what you always want to do. Because, life doesn't work that way. You are told what you are tasked to do. There is no need to be rebellious. Deal with it".
Why Book Adaptations Need To Serve to the Producers and Higher Ups From Hollywood.
Book film adaptations like Eragon, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Percy Jackson, Twilight, Atlas Shrugged, Harry Potter, The Seeker, The Hobbit, Jumper, and so many more. Use 100-200 budget for production. They use cgi and practical effects as a way to experiment. These are not superhero movies. There a reason why Alan Moore criticized more specifically at superhero movies. Because he thinks superhero stories, especially Marvel and DC, have their source material cannibalized to hollywood. And are serving to the higher ups of hollywood. Book adaptations need to serve hollywood producers and the higher ups by a lot of film studios. Have been a trend for so many decades age. Possibly, since the very beginning and introduction of hollywood. Since they have nothing else left to go. Even if the book adaptations are butchered, authors aren't involved, criticized by die hard fans, or go against the source material. Like I have said, I am giving it a pass and let it slide. Producers, and everyone who worked by hollywood. Have their right to do what they want to do with the book adaptations. There is no thing as perfect, only experiment and add changes. In order to become relevant to die hard fans, scholars, analysts, and average people alike. Book adaptations can be what it wants to be. Let it become what it can be. There is no definitive answer to adapt books in other media.
I kind of agree here on this. According to the filmmakers and producers. Sometimes, less is more and better. Making a book adaptation much longer, isn't always a necessity. Cutting down plot points and changing the source material. Feel justified to me. Let it be what book to film and tv adaptations alike, become what producers and filmmakers demand it to be.
I don't like when audiences complain about films like for example. The Last Airbender, The Black Dahlia, and Eragon. Being under 120 minutes. Like they complain about book or tv adaptations change the source material. And say that it goes against the source material. I don't care about that anymore. I am okay when books, anime, video games, and tv, change their source material. Not to copy that was done already. It needs to experiment and be its own thing. I disagree here. It even has the right to part of the source material's canon and lore. There is no excuse to judge a book by it's cover. Time do accept it and deal with it. Otherwise, what was the entire point of doing these adaptations? But remaking the follow the source material. Okay, but spite jabs at the distinct previous adaptations? No more. This is what just annoys me a lot. Deal with it! Or else, some source material media should be left alone. Why can diehard fans accept the deviations of books, anime, video games, tv, and other tyoe of media? I care for these adaptations that wanted to deviate the source material. Fans have no excuses to force the adaptations of the source material just to please them. Seriously?! Let be what it wants to become. Directors and producers have their own decisions too! To this very day. Enough is enough of this complaining! That's all I have to say here.
Book adaptations have the right to deconstruct the source material is based on. Don't just copy and compare it what was done before. Deviations need to happen whether fans like it or not. I don't care if it goes against the source material. I want it to be what it wants to become. Other people like Producers, Actors, and Directors have rights too. In the end, no is really right or wrong.
Unlike the books, the character's thoughts are not known so sympathetic characters become unsympathetic.
GRRM has said before that only the books and the side stories he has written are canon. Neither the show, the comics, or the video games are. I don't doubt that the ending of Game Of Thrones will be the complete opposite of the ending of ASOIAF.
#5 is funny because I'm still reading the Mortal Instruments books (I'm reading City of Glass right now) and a friend gave me some spoilers that Shadowhunters have already done and I still didn't get there in the books :( Since the show has been canceled I'm more tranquilized that he won't ruin my experience
#9 is really true, at least for me it's came to a point where I have stopped watching the show or movies made from the books that I have already read.
Even TVD books and series are different!!!!
Didn't even know Dexter was a book series.
I prefer Ms(M)mojo (over watchmojo.)(Also sorry for all the comments I have an anxiety problem.
The 100!!!!!
Shadowhunters butchered some of the most important book scenes, never do that. Either don't touch them or do them justice, do not ever butcher them.
Most of the people I know just wait until the stuff comes out on Netflix which is really aggravating 😑
this reminds me of how drastically the 100 changed from the books to the TV show. don't get me wrong, I like the TV show, but it turned honestly a pretty simple, cute series into a drama and angst-filled show that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
10. I'm still waiting for part 2 of Fire and Blood.
Half of the TV shows I like are based on books TVD, PLL, 13 reasons why
#7 makes more sense with movies.
Wonder what it would be like if the adapter magic tree house into a tv series
I hope `non verbal` cue is not related to this
I prefer Ms(M) mojo (over watchmojo.)
Number 5 is my biggest problem.
The Strain, The Strain, The Strain!
TV shows and movies...?
The writers run out of source material and create horribly written fanfiction.
*cough cough* Game of Thrones season 7.
Shadowhunters s2 & 3 we're crao
AMLD TV FAM there are so many things wrong with the show yet I still watch it 🤦🏾♀️🙃😂
Eden-louise Maye same, I haven't finished s3 yet though. I hated that they killed Jocelyn off and saved Max which didn't happen in the boojs
Which show was that, in which reese witherspoon was thinking about sex. It was in the end
Big Little Lies I think
I prefer Ms(M)mojo(over watchmojo.)EDlT: just now sorry.)
R
Tf is this on msmojo for
A big problem is when they write out side characters and story lines from the books .
Sometimes I want to slap the producers because they butcher our favorite books. They have no idea what they are doing.
I never read the books.
So you really got in my nerve with this video.
