the best reference I've found in many years(beyond using a color checker), is to shoot the scene with an iphone and have that as backup. There is something very good about the iphone color that is hard to get right out of the can on a raw image. Really helps on rooms with strong color casts or colored walls, ceilings.
I carry three gray cards and when shooting a location I know needs it may use all of them in a reference shot so I can use that in post to help correct the final image.

Hey Matt - your content's incredibly helpful, much appreciated!! I notice you use an A7R with Canon lenses. Does shooting with such a high megapixel camera and pairing it with older lenses like the 24MM T/S have any impact on sharpness and overall quality? Thanks - Andrew
Thanks Matt! I always feel super unprofessional because I forget about my Grey card all the time and usually just end up using a mixture of your other points. It’s reassuring to know that it’s ok 😅 it would be great if you could talk about colours again but with regards to image exporting and client delivery. The importance of working with a colour calibrated monitor and how your deal with images appearing different across different screens. Like have you ever got a complaint from a client because they were looking at your photos on a screen with inaccurate colours? How do you deal with or avoid that happening?
I’ve never calibrated my monitor. Haven’t really ever run into client issues related to color. I’ve had the occasional request to tweak a color here or there in an image…but nothing I could ever attribute as an error because of my monitor not being calibrated.
I had a client, finally she gave me negative review about my work. Her old android phone screen was too warm and she told me that all my images are yellowish. I told her about different screens temperature/colors, she don't want to hear anything, so at the end I have to do much cooler images, so they look good at her phone. But anyway she gave me bad review. One for few years :)
The biggest challenge I face with white balance is keeping them consistent with flash shots + ambient shots. What's your workflow in those instances? or do you just white balance at the end with the finished stacked photo?
I usually play it by ear with each space cause there’s always a lot of variables. Flash mixes pretty well with window/daylight so shooting with the interior lights off solves a lot of those issues.

Did you know that you can use your lens caps/camera sensor caps as a grey card =)?

One issue I'm trying to figure out is why my white balance goes way off when my flash power is really high (big spaces).
