You know what's funny? We actually learned a tune last year for siren City grade 5 band. It was called lord lovat lament. It actually had the rodin. But our bagpipe instructor told us to just use a normal grip if we couldn't get the rodent embellishment. The interesting thing is, the Rodin is basically just a grip with a b instead of a grip with a degrace note.
Great video as usual Matt, Castle Dangerous is one of my band tunes and I spent ages on the Rodin training that finger, but glad I did as now I don't even have to think about it.
I’m no expert… but have been sporadically piping for 20ish years… I am today years old learning about this rodin… I also never learned Castle Dangerous… 😂 Thank you Matt! #everydayisaschoolday
Good lord, I didn't realize this had a particular name as it was included in my early embellishments. I would never have thought that it wouldn't be commonly taught.
Of course I misspell "embellishment" at the very beginning. Oops!

The timing and sound of the Rodin and the grip are different though. The Rodin is bubblier and takes a bit longer to get through…
So glad for this video! I was hoping you'd make a video on this embellishment one day. Thank you for this!
Glad to be of service!

It's a tough one! Glad it paid off for you.

It often depends on one's early repertoire. If you need "A Man's a Man" or "Castle Dangerous" for say a pipe band, then you'll learn this quickly.
Same, once he said castle dangerous i knew it.
Rodin is the vocable for that gracenotes in piobaireachd
Indeed it is! I had meant to include that, but alas... I don't script these videos. Thanks for sharing that!
Uh controversial... what note should it shave the timing off 😆. Does the beat land on the g or the b while giving the previous note its full value 🤯
Hey Matt. What are the chances of getting a tutorial for ghillie callum?
Seeing as it’s not in my repertoire, slim at this point… but! It’s on the list.
@ Well, thanks anyway. Your videos are very helpful!
