    Really enjoyed that - brilliant intro to the sub 37. Anyone thinking about getting a sub 37 is is going to have a really good idea of the sound palette on offer thanks to you. The noise generator in the mixer section is analog - but there is also a digital noise generator used as a source for the mod busses. One counter-intuitive thing is that panel mode isn't always WYSIWG. If you do an init in panel mode, the knobs will be out of sync - just need to press [preset] then [panel] again after doing a panel init to pull it all in line with the hardware.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  8 років тому

      +FunInWales Hah, I think I demoed the panel mode by accident at some point when trying to get an init patch! You're quite right the noise generator is analog, not sure what I said in the vid, I might have said it was digital, possibly getting confused with the Prophet 6 duh!! :)

    Even though the mute-button seems lame and pointless, I guess that it would come in veey handy in a lot of situations.
    Then you can have it hooked up to speakers or P.A. and mute the main signal but still hear it in the headphones.
    Then you can quickly test stuff, rehearse, program a sound, check that it is the right preset and much more, by yourself and not going public with it.
    Very nice feature in some situations, I guess - and very flexible in situations where you are not in charge of the mixer or got it next to you.
    Very nice video, thanx. 👍🙂

    I'm going to ask a potentially dumb question about the Sub 37 now! On my Yamaha MOXF, when I change to a different voice, all the settings and knob values get set back to what they should be for the voice. On the Moog, what happens when you load a preset if you've been messing around with all the knobs and changing their values for the previous preset loaded? Does it reset them all back to what they should be for the new preset?

    Hi! Great videos!!
    I have one question: I just got my sub37, but it makes audible noise, whenever I lowpass filter an init patch for example. Below 320 it starts to reveal itself and this noise (white noise-ish) follows the envelope and starts on key press. (The noise generator is of course turned off). Does yours do the same or is it dead silent? Mine is dead silent when no note is pressed.:-s

  • @johnnyvandeclit259

    Nice demo, very nice synth. 6db filter sounds amazing, plenty of modulations, definitely worth considering. No ring mod though. I own a Prodigy, and I'm sure it is not blown away by any mean by the Sub as long as you keep apples and oranges in separated bowls : no overdrive or feedback, comparable waves. The Prodigy filter IS screaming when pushed, creamy/silky etc when adjusted to be so, and the solidity of the basses are amazing compared to most modern synths and a good bunch of vintage ones too :) As for the hard sync, I'm pretty sure the blowing away would be the other way around, from the few samples I've heard of the Sub. No sync compares to the Prodigy's one.

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  6 років тому

    Hi mate, I like your videos and was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions for me if you have time. I want to get a synth, Dave Smith preferably, but don't know really sweet FA about them. Basically, I'm living between two places at the moment - that makes it sound way, way more glamourous than the reality! - and want to get back into playing keyboards again and as a result need to buy one for the other place. I want a synth to mess about with, but one that can also be played as a regular keyboard. My issue is that I get lost when it comes to talk of voices in synth reviews. What I'm asking is, I suppose, which Dave Smith synths can be used with any modifications as a regular piano keyboard? I get that the Prophet 12 is that, but that's a little out of my price range, and I'm a little confused over what exactly the Prophet 6 and Pro 2 are! The Mopho SE for example: how many notes can that handle at once?
    I'd be very grateful for any help!

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  8 років тому

      +Michael Jenkins Hi, I'm not exactly sure what you're asking, i.e. do you want to play regular piano style sounds, or are you talking about polyphony (how many notes you can play at the same time)? If you want piano sounds, a DSI isn't for you, although you could use it as a controller for piano sounds from anything else (software, or sound modules). For more regular sounds (general midi etc, cellos, organs strings etc) there a loads of options, but I use software to cover these. If you're looking for polyphony you'll need a Prophet 6, 8 or 12. The Pro2 is monophonic (i.e. only one note at a time), or can play 2 notes in duo phonic mode - which is far from regular piano style playing. You'll also want a larger keyboard if you're playing with 2 hands! The Mopho SE is a monophonic Mopho with larger keyboard Mophox4 is 4 note polyphonic.
      If cash is tight ';d go of the P8. It is 8 note polyphonic (compared to the prophet 6's 6 notes) and can cover most of the ground of the P6 plus more. It's all there in my P6 vs P8 video series, but to summarise: P6 is simpler and has FX, P8 has no FX, is more complex but is cheaper. P8 also has a split mode for e.g. bass on left pads on the right and an octave more on the keyboard.

    Is there a way to adjust the sub37 keyboard bed for velocity??
    I've noticed when I try to record on my PC, it always registers as the same decibel range no matter how hard/soft I push the keys. Thanks for the input!

    • @StarskyCarr
      @StarskyCarr  5 років тому +2

      Initialise the patch - hold the init button. The velocity isn’t active yet. Press the button to access the 2nd functions of the ADSR controls (it’s between the 2 sets of ADSR knobs next to ‘Delay’. The sustain knobs now control the velocity amount going to either the filter or amp.
      If this doesn’t work check that the keybed is registering different velocities by looking at the MIDI input on your DAW - check the velocity of recorded notes.

      you can split the keyboard and put any of the synths over their own set of keys... and they can all sound on the same key, overlap or solo. I'm not 100% that's what you're asking though?

      +Grant Hoglund you need to tune the filter at a high resonance. Put reso full, turn off all other oscillators and put keytrack on 1:1. Now tune the cutoff so that the filter is in tune with Osc 1. Turn Osc 1 on to do this. The filter will be an octave or 2 higher (you can also tune like a drawbar and choose an interval -3rd, 5th etc). With a 1:1 keytrack setting the filter will track the keyboard perfectly. Once tuned mix Osc 1 into the mix - dead simple really but sounds really effective.
