    BEST PART OF THE VIDEO. At about 7:00 he's demonstrating feedback/distortion/drive and he looks up at the camera with a subtle "Holy ****!!!" look. Super heavy and I totally get it. Intending to utilize this particular function a lot. Thanks for the demo, very helpful.

      Martin Martyné It's just an analog mono(/paraphonic) synth. Of course it sounds electronic, it's a *synth*. You can make a lot more than "techno" with this or any other synth, techno is just one of the many genres of electronic music, not the only one.

    I just rewatched to get a mental grip on the envelopes and lfos again, but just listening to this review is fun, every single sound this synth makes is heavenly.

    The sub 37 is destined to be a classic. It should hold its value very well. Think of it as an investment you can play. A true piece of art. I haven't purchased one yet but it's calling my name.

    I applaud you for having the bravery to soldier on your mispronunciation of "Moog." I still call Ryu from Street Fighter "rye-you," and anyone who corrects me gets a karate chop to the neck. One must be willing to bend on many things in life, but willful, stubborn mispronunciation is a matter of principal, and is well worth fighting for..

    Very nice and thorough review of the Moog Sub 37's amazing features. It can of course only touch the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the capabilities of this amazing machine.
    This is one of a few very good reviews I have seen on UA-cam that have swayed me to get one, regardless of how little I can afford one. I just think that I cannot afford not to have one, a sentiment with which I am sure many viewers of this video share.
    By the way, the sound at the end of the video is absolutely amazing. Lovely patch.

    I'm American. I don't say "moge" either. I was a kid when I first saw their use in a music video for The Rentals, friends of P. To me, it said "moo-g" and that's how it stayed in my mind. Honestly that sounds more synthy to me anyway.

    I watched this a few years back, now watching again my original purchse of a little Moog Minitaur was cos I couldn`t have afforded this. I made a custom overlay for my UC33 controller that exposes the Minitaurs hidden functions and that was better, then I routed 3 raw OSCs from my DSI Mopho into the Minitaur and better still but in the end I just want one of these instead ! gotta get one soonish. The Ultimate Monosynth for many of us methinks now

      But the Pro 2 will NEVER sound like a Moog, let alone all the new nuances of new sonic territories this Sub 37 covers. I bought the Sub 37 over the Pro 2 because I have the DSI Mono Evolver Keyboard poly chained to a Poly Evolver Rack, which still think Evolver is Dave's best ever synth. There's some new wild functionalities being added to the Sub 37 in an update in near future. The sequencer on Sub 37 is fantastic and is simple to understand. The Sub 37 has been the most creativity inspiring synth I have bought in a long time and cannot stop playing it.
      Nice review, Nick!

    I really do like this sound of the Sub 37. I've been hearing a lot of the pushed/driven sound on 37 demos. It's a different beast than the Voyager, which is of course a different beast from the original model d. Can the Sub 37 get those Voyager-like full, warm, CLEAN, ooey-gooey analog tones? How would you (or anyone reading) compare the clean tones of the Sub 37 to those from the Voyager? To my ears, the Sub 37 has a little more edge, a little less fullness (?) in comparison. Thanks.

    Why do the Sub 37 oscillators sound SO MUCH better than the Prophet 6? I thought that the prophet for the price would parallel with the sub37 but it has none of the juicy goodness that the sub37 has. I mean every time I play the sub37 I cannot stop myself, whereas with the prophet I'm often struggling to find a sound I dig...

    • @michaelbauers8800
      @michaelbauers8800 7 років тому

      I cant answer this, but the P6 does use a different filter than the Moog. My P12 can sound a lot like my Sub 37, even with the fact the P12 has digital oscillators and a Curtis filter, but there's definitely a difference I hear at times, and I think of it as partly due to the P12's sawtooth being a bit bright/harsh, but mainly the Moog filter. If the P6's waves are a bit harsh, don't hesitate to use the LPF filter a bit, that's what it's there for. Personally I could part with my Moog before my other synths due to it's limited presets, but it has a bit of this in your face thing maybe lacking on my digital synths. It's hard to pin down or explain, but it seems less tamed, and sometimes clashes with my other synths - which is probably not a bad thing; I certainly didn't need a clone of what I already had :)

    I got the S37 and love it, but I miss the FM capabilities of the first generation Phattys and Voyagers that can use oscillator 2 as a modulation source. The S37 got fast (digital) LFOs but they sounds bad when you push them into audio rate...also they can´t reach the high octaves as the Phatty and Voyager´s oscillators

    • @dudewhosaysarrh
      @dudewhosaysarrh 8 років тому +1

      +Daniel Anselmi Well you don't have a button on the front panel but actually you can use the oscillators as modulation sources, at least with the newest firmware. You just have to call up the mod bus menu, set the pgm source to one of the oscillators and of course set the mod bus dial to eg/PGM and violà: oscillator cross modulation!

    • @dudewhosaysarrh
      @dudewhosaysarrh 8 років тому +1

      +Daniel Anselmi Do you have a Problem with the audio rate of the main oscillators? My sub also had a problem reaching high frequencies. When I set it to 2' and went up two octaves the sound would dissappear. It turned out to be a simple calibration problem. If you call up the global menu and go to the third page you will find the calibration option. Simply initiate that and wait for about 3 to 5 minutes and your synth will be able to reach those high notes.

    • @danselmix
      @danselmix 8 років тому +1

      +dudewhosaysarrh mmm... Are you sure? I don't think you can dial an oscillator as a modulation source...Maybe you think that "OSC 1 Pitch" and "OSC 2 Pitch" means that you can use the oscillators´output as modulation sources, but that´s wrong...this modulation sources are just a number, equivalent of a MIDI note, not oscillator output...it´s just like keyboard tracking

    Does anyone know how this instrument interfaces with a computer? Can you use a midi input on your audio interface to hook it up or does it require some kind of special mixer or interface? I'm pretty new to the world of synthesizers, I know this is a noob question, but any insight would be appreciated.

    • @michaelbauers8800
      @michaelbauers8800 8 років тому

      Normally, you would hook it up to the computer with MIDI or USB ( if it supports USB MIDI.) And if you want to record it to the computer, you will need audio cables, and maybe an audio interface ( depending on how picky you are, you might be able to hook it to the computer's default audio input.)

    I'm not a professional , heck I'm not even very good. But I love synthesizers ,and I have since the 60's. I loved switched on Bach and everything since. My ears searched for synths in every movie and record. Never did I think I could have one.I wasn't rich and I really wasn't a "musician". I was a sound guy and could do that pretty well ,but my music stopped with childhood piano lessons and always having a harmonica on the dashboard. But I'm a world class listener and music lover. Lately I have been very happy. I can afford really wonderful synthesizers... Roland's and Korgs ,and now I own a MOOG!!!!Thanks Nick. Easily Moog's best synth since the Model D. It's like a Model D genetically crossbred with an ARP Odyssey (paraphonic duophony, 2-pole filter setting) & a VCS3 (latching and looping envelopes, arpeggiator/sequencer, increased modulation capabilities, 3-pole filter setting). Not that it sounds like either of those 2 synths, but it's nice to know that some very criminally underrated functionality of those 2 synths are finally being considered by somebody in the modern synth market.

      Robert I Thank you, I appreciate that. I just try to show what can be done with the synth in various contexts, it shocks me that anyone would take offense from that or be jealous (and if they don't like my style of music, fine, don't listen, but they don't have to report it as spam! Especially when I was praising this video here!)

    Just purchased mine, i was a Moog Prodigy and Taurus mk1 user for a long time in the early 80's the Sub 37 is class, build is awesome everything feels solid including knobs, and the keybed is far better than sub phatty, . only had it a week i have it midi'd up to midi bass pedals, sounds fantastic, i programmed a really close emulation of the Taurus.

      +Kyle Morgan It's so amazing. I have the little phatty (which I love) but I think the sub37 is way more fun to play with. It's so full and breathtaking to play if you have the volume loud enough, nice n rumbly, a total beast :) It seems to stay in tune a bit longer? But I haven't travelled with it yet, and thats really when the phatty screwed up most. I bought the first one I saw in person, so if you're into this type of thing, I definitely think it's worth it! If I had to choose one over the other I would def get the 37 and if you're into Moog pieces this is definitely one for the collection!

    about to get one, already have the slim phatty, thinking to go one into the other. the moog folks suggested going into the SP first, then out into the audio in of the 37 with a midi connector linking them. then i could run the SP into the 37 in terms of oscillators, etc. should be very fat

    The Mogue and Moooog controversy is silly. They are both acceptable pronunciations to me and I bet half of you couldn't care less as well.
    In the '70's and '80's everybody that I knew or heard called it the Moooog -- even on the radio and TV. It wasn't until the late '90's and thereafter that I started to hear pronunciation corrections by purists.
    I've since watched several video interviews with Robert Moog on youtube where the interviewer introduced him as Robert Moooog and Mr. Moog didn't correct him. He was a classy man. I'm sure Mr. Moog was used to the different pronunciations all his life and just accepted it. He didn't seem bothered by it so neither do I, although I now faithfully pronounce it as Mogue.

    even through very cheap earphones I can hear that deep bassy affair going on. I've not even got a low end enhancement thingy going on. what a loud raucous noisey blatty fellow we have hear. I honestly hope it's out of my budget range. I'd be hard pressed to justify to the lads coming in church with such an obviously heathen and unsaved keyboard as this,but I'd do it. hey how in he'll does midi work with an analo......oh preset them ahead of time...ok carry on

    Can somebody maybe help me with my pitch wheel issue?
    My Sub 37 tends to go out of tune as soon as I touch the pitch bend wheel... When I program it to bend up 0 semitones, it stays in tune, but obviously I can only pitch bend down and that seems to be corrupted as well. It seems to be a mechanical problem, because the device seems to think I'm constantly holding the pitch wheel upwards, even when I‘m not.
    Has somebody ever had this problem too?
    Thanks in advance...

    Kinda sucks the only way to buy them new now leaves you without CV ins and outs. I’ll miss that to interface with my drumbrute and SQ-1

  • @laurencevanhelsuwe3052

    I second the reviewer's final comments on value for money. This synth isn't cheap in absolute terms, but for what you get, it's superb. Spoiler: there is so much more you can get out of the synth than was shown here. The modulation routings are just a universe in themselves. I've only got mine for 4 weeks, and every session uncovers more "Wow" realisations. This is a synthesizer with superlative potential. Adding a reverb/delay is a must though.. it makes this animal take off into space..

      TheGreatUtopiaCat Hey! For reverb and delay, definitely try the free Reaktor ensembles from Boscomac. It's some of the dreamiest stuff I've ever heard. Look at Echophonic, Floodverb, Springtime, and Stellar (which is a unique combo of verb, phaser, tremolo, and pitch shift). All his stuff is top-notch.

    Would this be a good starter synth? I want to make some music (a digital cd) and my only experience is being classicly trained on piano and harpsichord and playing on my moms old organ (which reminds me of this!!! So much fun when I was a kid!!!) :-) Also does this have the ability to sound like an electric piano at all? Thanks! Great demo!!!

    • @KatErina-ii6ru
      @KatErina-ii6ru 8 років тому

      oh also, if I wanted to get a little of the OLD Moog sound of the 1960's would this be able to do that?

    • @tomfurstyfield
      @tomfurstyfield 8 років тому +1

      Honestly for a starter synth this is a bit overkill, I own 4 at the moment and none are as complex as this. It would take a long time to get to grips with this you're better off starting out with something like a microbrute to get the basics or for something more pricey the minilogue.
      Also this synth only plays 2 notes so you can't do chords, the brute only plays 1 though so if you're expecting to play it like a piano then it won't work like that.
      Google "synthesizer sympathizer buying your first" and you'll find a guide going into all the details you need

    • @ledheavy26
      @ledheavy26 8 років тому +1

      Depends on your budget, and if you're aware of the limitations of a mono/duophonic synth like this (one or two notes at a time, not like the instruments you mentioned). The Moog is a fantastic synthesizer and will be one you'd hold on to if you bought one. My first synth was a Dave Smith Mopho desktop, which is more difficult to program than this but you just need to read the manual and understand subtractive synthesis to get what you want. The Moog has buttons and knobs for easy control, and its a synth you can learn on and appreciate more as you gain experience. If you've got the money and are a serious musician, you'll learn it and not regret it. If you're on a budget, there are other options. Everyone and their mom will mention the microbrute, it's a good value, but it won't sound like a Moog and I don't think it's quite as playable as this one is, aside from the Moog having more features.

      Why not? Price is good. Looks solid. Quite hands on. If it's in your budget, you can't go too wrong with this. Just note that it's mostly a mono synth. If you want to play 6 notes at a time, look for something else.

    I bought mine last week Nick, and your review really points out what I love about it so far. Having previously owned a Slim and Voyager, they are each their very own distinct animals, but the 37 is hitting the mark with my over-acute sense of analogue growliness. Love it. :)

    Great review Nick! I'm at the moment deciding between a Sub 37 and a MFB Dominion 1 as my first mono analog synth. Would you think it would be possible or in Sonic State plans to review one of those? I've been hours checking all the videos available in UA-cam, but it is still difficult for me to decide. I have tried a Sub 37 in person and I liked it, but the raw power of the MFB and its possibilities for future expansion into a modular are really tempting... Anyways, again congratulations... great review as always.

    It's pronounced like "Moge" not "Mooog" like a cow. It doesn't matter what country you come from or your accent. It comes from the name of Robert Moog. It's the height of arrogance to knowingly mispronounced someone's name or that of his company just because you were born in another country.

    [This is 8 years late, but come on-Moog is a person's name. Accents should have nothing to do with pronouncing it properly.]
