How to buy train tickets on Osaka Metro & JR lines - Travel advice in Japan & IC Cards

This week I am trying to help the tourists flooding back to Japan by helping you buy and use train tickets in Osaka - especially the Osaka Metro and JR lines. Although the method is pretty much the same regardless of train company and all over Japan.
You might feel a bit confused when you enter a Japanese train station, but things are a lot better these days, there is plenty of English information available.
I'll take you from Osaka's Morinomiya station to Umeda station by Osaka Metro, including a train transfer, and then back again via JR's Osaka Station and back to JR Morinomiya.
I'll show you how to buy a ticket, what to do if you buy the wrong ticket. I'll point out the machines you can use to buy Shinkansen and Ltd Express tickets. Afterwards I'll talk about the JR Pass, IC Cards and more.
