    Another possibility is that they congregate there to pay their respects to the forbidden knowledge without actually accessing it (or at least they originally chose this location with such intention, likely forgetting it by this point), much like the quantum pilgrimage of the Nomai brings them as close to the Eye as possible without allowing them to reach it. The difference, of course, being that there is nothing stopping them from doing it in the inhabitants' case other than the mental barriers they've set for themselves. Fitting, given the themes of EOTE.

  • @fandomanYT

    Part of me wonders how hastily the Stranger was constructed. My theory is that some sections of the simulation may only be partially finished. Unlike the other failsafes of the sim, this section in the Party House could just have a temporary fire wall (pun intended) that the inhabitants need to guard manually to prevent intrusion. Having the elder standing directly in front of it helps to ensure no one else gets any ideas like the Prisoner did to try and access the Forbidden Archives.

    • @TheLoreExplorer
      @TheLoreExplorer  3 місяці тому +2

      I dont really think thats the case. The sim seems to be coded via staff based off their thoughts. I think its probably pretty well "thought through"! ::D

    Hey, I'm new in this place, but I've already seen a couple of your videos. I have to mention that the level of effort and detail that this game has is incredible. One thing that seems interesting to me is the fact that the trees in the outer wilds are very op organisms because according to what we see they are capable of colonizing various inhospitable places and developing perfectly (an example of this, inside the comet we find Nomai trees) and adding to it the fact that they seem to survive for centuries (the Nomai trees in the hanging city in Brittle Hollow or those found on the Nomai ship).

    • @TheLoreExplorer
      @TheLoreExplorer  3 місяці тому +2

      If you look closely youll notice those trees are sort of special. The bark of the tree is multicolored. You can find the plants origin in the vessel. The Nomai sort of spliced and engineered them to be so sturdy and long lasting because they needed a plant that will provide them oxygen while exploring space!

  • @25meip
    @25meip 2 місяці тому +1

    It's interesting that in the main game, it's all about exploring- facing the dangers of leaving home and going out into the unknown. And overcoming your fears allows you to find the truths out there. In the DLC, on the stranger, it's all about journeying inward to find things that are hidden. About what happens to the truths you already know when you don't overcome those fears.
    In certain branches of psychology there's an idea that truth is health, and that the thing you most need to find is in the place you least want to look. That there are parts of yourself, or of your culture in general, that are unconscious and un-seeable. It's technical name is the "shadow", and that it is what you "project" onto the world around you. That the fears and frustrations inside you are the things you see everywhere in the world.
    On the stranger, the visuals are all about literal projections and shadows. All tied to Falsehoods, memories, longing. To the extent that if you walk away from the lantern literally projecting the dream world around you, all of the shadows go away and you can see everything for what it is. And the deeper you look into their secrets, the closer you get to finding what they're hiding, the more fear you need to face to overcome it.
    They were living in regret over everything they lost and their fear and resentment about what they believe the Eye to be. They are so angry and hurt they literally built a dream world to hide away in. When someone finally decided the truth about the Eye needed to be known by others, they buried him in the deepest darkest place they had and then left him there to be forgotten.
    That's why the prisoner is at peace when you tell him everything that had happened because of what he did. Bringing the truth about everything to light allowed him to let go of all the regret and hurt he felt from the thousand of years spent all alone, never truly knowing if he did the right thing.

    Interesting theory... that's a possibility I hadn't considered. The best theory I'd thought of was that they were gathering because they *knew* the dam was damaged and about to break. Some of them could have been getting reports on conditions in the real world, instead of trying to forget it existed.

    • @Vijver
      @Vijver 3 місяці тому +5

      Consider that the dam only started breaking down after the solar sails were deployed, while this party definitely starts before that happens.

      @@redsapling253 you can actually go to the control panel of the Stranger, and the screen there will show an indicator of the supernova's progression. Seems to me like they set that up to automatically detect the supernova and deploy the sails without the need to inform the Strangers. They just didn't anticipate that the momentary lapse in power (the sails deploying uses a lot of it) was enough to critically weaken the dam.

    i tried to explore this sub-area first, and sadly it gave me a really bad impression of the DLC. i dont think it was bad, it just really threw off my expectations with how different it felt from the main game, with the survival horror aspects and the claustrophobic level design which, to be clear, does a great job of making it feel more unsettling. i'm sure i would have it liked it more after i had visited the other areas and got a better grasp on the "rules", and i wish i hadnt reacted like that - it stopped me from enjoying the other segments nearly as much

    I'm glad you're back.. a video idea I have for you is, why do the innhabitants look "younger" even tho irl they look.. well.. dead. And how does the simulation know how the hatchling looks, cuz we know the simulation isn't an actual place and just a programmed world.

    • @TheLoreExplorer
      @TheLoreExplorer  3 місяці тому +1

      That indeed is an interesting topic! I’ll add it to the list.
      To answer the question(which you’ve probably thought through a bit). The inhabitants staff has the power to scan things. But it isn’t because of the staff. It’s the fire. The fire scanned the inhabitants at the age they entered. As we see in reels they were as they look in sim. This same fire scans us as we enter. And boom! We enter as is! ::D.
      Thanks so much for the comment!

  • @Yuti640
    @Yuti640 3 місяці тому

    Completely unrelated to this video’s topic but there’s something i just realised about outer wilds
    If you ever return to the Observatory on Timber Hearth after the first loop is over, Hal and Hornfels will be at the Nomai statue, discussing how it’s eyes are now open
    This means that at the beginning of every loop, one or both of them had to have gone past the statue since otherwise they wouldn’t see it with its eyes open in following loops
    Which means that if they were just a bit slower, there’s a high chance the statue could’ve connected to THEM instead of the Hatchling once the probe found the Eye, which means we were extremely lucky to even be the one to connect to the nomai statue
    How facinating is that?

  • @propeg3293

    This video makes me feel bad for them. But I can't help but still question why they attack us? The only thing I can think of is that they don't want us snooping around their stuff. Otherwise, why not think of us as their friends. If we don't do anything to them, why should they do that to us?

    • @TheLoreExplorer
      @TheLoreExplorer  3 місяці тому +1

      Yeah. Thats a large part of it. They dont want us to find any of their secrets. But after their experience with the eye the inhabitants have become afraid of the unknown.
      If we take the warp core and die to enter the simulation, we get a special ending in which they stop trying to deload us and just accept us as part of the sim. But this is after so long of not trying to find the secrets. They arent mean or bad at heart. Just scared.

    I have never thought it was a party, but a ritual ceremony because the song was too sad for beeing a celebration. It was melancolic et even if, at the end, all you desire is to hear their scream when they die after they have prevented to access to the Forbidden Archives (or if, like me, you are an historian with a degree who hate the autodafes or censury), you can only to be sad, hearing this song.
    I saw sometime many similarities between the Strangers and the Nomaïs in their careless quest of the Eye.
    The Strangers have give up everything they have destoyed their own planet, not giving themselves the way to return because their faith, to go for this "Promised" Eye of the Universe. It's a total faith, crazy for not doubt about their discovery. They have a religious rapport based on the belief on It, building church (and burning them)...
    The Nomaï have a part of this crazy quest of verity : they have shrine to ask questions about the nature of the Eye : Good ? Bad ? Indiffernet ? Shearching Chosen Ones ? But, big difference, their talks are metaphysics, scientifics, philosophic. they don't believe a truth, they ask questions and accept it, like Solanum who, when a child, thought the Eye bad to have killed her clan, but who, after many question, have decided to shearche the true. Shearching the truth is the religion of the Nomai, it doesn't matter if this truth is horrible (end of the Universe) or good (you will give birth to a new universe by your experiences).
    But they have a part of crazyness in them for their quest of knowledge.The Vessel has made its distorsions without the Captain attempts to call the others clans, and because they can't lost time, they don't verify their coordonates and they have finished in Sombronce... They are totally crazy : they jump in Black Hole by pleasure, theses crazies idiots and their plan was to explode the sun in Supernova. Yes, it's working, but it's a little radical as a plan !
    Howewer, before the Big plan, they have asked question about the ethic, promised to stop if the project had the ltllest risk to destroy everything, choosing another mine because they didn't want to prevent the cute creatures in the water to evolve (in the Atriens). They have a big respect for all form of knowledge. It's their religion and it wont disapoint them never, even if it's harsh truth.
    The Strangers burn their knowledge when the truth doesn't equal their belief and don't accept it (except one).
    But, faith and reason has driven an Atrien, shearching the truth, to go in the Eye of the Universe. The both forms of thoughts aren't so dissimilars.

    I have a theory: there are 3 archives that was sent to the dream world. We don't know what was there, but we have one story slides from each section. The first one is about the Ringed Planet, the second about the travel to the Eye and the third about creation of the Dream World. What if all other slides are also from these periods respectfully? Which means owlks have free access to the recordings of the first period (homeworld), but they locked the other two (travel and simulation), because they want to remember the Ringed Planet, but don't want to rewatch what happens next?

    I agree that they may be getting ready to go down and watch some reels (Owlk movie night). I don't agree that the archives weren't general knowledge in the Owlk community. Since all reels were available in the real world until the prisoner released the signal (unless i misremember?). I think all the security for the archives are just for the off chance that someone finds the ring-world. I mean, cloaking to stop inhabitants makes no sense, and presumably (my understanding) all the Owlks worked together to make the simulation. And we don't know their language, so the name "the forbidden archives" is just made up by the hatchling.

    • @TheLoreExplorer
      @TheLoreExplorer  3 місяці тому

      Hmm. I see why you say that. But the entire point of those measures are to forget about them over time. So they can believe the sim is the real world. So the cloaking would go in this vein. They’d stay so long in the sim without using them they’d forget the cloaked passageways. And hopefully the archives themselves.
      I have an interview with a couple of the devs after the dlc came out. You may find it interesting!

  • @Rav0ria

    • @TheLoreExplorer
      @TheLoreExplorer  3 місяці тому

      From what we see there is only one different reel in each. The rest of the reels have the same images we see in every archive. But considering how many there are this is just a design choice. My guess is they are all basically identical except they each house one unique reel regarding their story.
      But consider it this way. They want to forget all the reels. Even ones of good times. Because they want to forget they are in a sim. And no matter which way you cut it the reels documented from their time in the real world is the antithesis of that.

    Why, if you send a scout to a black hole inside the planet, the signal is cut off, even if you go through the black hole yourself?

      personally, i believe its because that scout is sent to a parallel universe.

    Do the owelks know they are dead in the real world

    • @TheLoreExplorer

      Its a nuanced question. The goal of the sim is to make them forget about the real world. So ideally , no. They would have forgotten a real world or separate living body even exists. In practice its hard to say if it worked for everyone. I think some do remember though. Such as the owelks we find in the party house and the prisoner.

      @@TheLoreExplorer It’s a weird concept to me, I know they eventually stopped coming back in the real world
      But them dying makes it pretty dangerous let’s say one of them wants to wake up for some odd reason and extinguish their lights. I found nothing about it but I think at least one would have died trying it. Perhaps they know they’ve been in for way too long and are too scared to try it.
      Im guessing they used to wake up using the bell and one day it stopped working and so they never came back.
      They go great length to forget about the end and make themselves feel safe but their confort zone is pretty much a prison in disguise they definitely did not forget.

      Time is a strange thing. At some point reality would just be the sim. The bells would be something to avoid on fear of death. They would have essentially evolved into a new reality where your lantern is your lifeblood.
      For the prisoner it is even more so a prison. A single tower. But as you mention the two aren’t that different. The sim is just a slightly larger version of the prisoners vault.
