  • Thanks to Mathieu van der Poel being willing to release his actual race file data from big races, win or lose, I was able to dive into his 2nd place Tour of Flanders 2021 race and compare it minute-for-minute and watt for watt with other great races he has won to learn more about what it takes to win these Spring Classics.

    Great breakdown. MVDP looked fatigued going into Flanders. It's clear from his reduced max HR that he was carrying too much fatigue. He said himself that he tried to hold a peak too long off not enough long base training. MVDP's next race is the first round of the XC MTB World Cup in 4 weeks. Hopefully,, he uploads his race file with power. That would be a fascinating breakdown. It's free to watch on RedBullTV.

    This was a great review and analysis! Very close to what I’ve seen Brett Kirby talk about about the Breaking 2 project, only using Delta SmO2 instead of Watts to quantify WAR (I like that term you used) and WUR along with their interplay.
    Thanks again!

    Credit to Asgreen who's tactic's didn't really allow Mvdp to execute his 'surge' attack as well. Asgreen is quoted as saying the team car told him to "trust his sprint".

    Very interesting. But I think it's also missing an important perspective on the importance of team tactics and teamwork in a race like this. Or, how teamwork and team tactics can actually impact the outcome of a race. Kasper Agreen was able to benefit from the work his teammates put out in the earlier stages of the race that forced MvDP and WVA to burn a few more matches closing gaps and chasing attacks. I do think that this was a factor when the final sprint came about. It would be interesting to go back to the actual race footage when Quick Step took the race to the others and see the impact this had on MvDP's numbers and reserves.

    I love this analysis and as a mountain ultra trail runner I am thinking about how this may apply to me. Surges are much less strategically important for mountain running, I think. There is a lot of variety in power output though. Do you think there is value in training for high-intensity repeatability in my sport? Or is it really just about my aerobic capacity and muscular endurance? Have you looked at runners, and especially mountain ultra trail runners in Endura?

      You can certainly analyse running files in EnDuRA. We’ve looked at a few marathon files but more around the HR drift as effort is more constant. I’ve recently started running with a Stryd power meter. All the power metrics still work but I guess you don’t get those “free” non pedalling periods in running like you do in cycling. The closest I’ve got in analysis of trail races is looking at a couple of cross country races. Not as long an ultra though!!

    Great analysis! In the last 20-25k of Flanders I noticed MvdP eating gels twice - which didn't look like a good sign to me.

    Great video! I actually think that van der poel's ftp is around 450 and not 410 as he said so himself.

    • @sportscientist
      @sportscientist  3 роки тому +6

      We have determined this value from an aggregated power-duration curve derived from numerous races, not "fresh" lab testing. This is an issue of course, but we are consistent within these races at least.

      @@sportscientist i believe the 410 mentioned is critical power not ftp?

    He could’ve had a cold the week before or one coming on. The possible causes of the lower power are infinite and probably unknowable. Cool to see how it looks in the analysis though.

    The max power output on Strava for the final Ronde sprint is 1470w and not 1314w. Something wrong with your file?
    When he felt Asgreen coming, he let go more quickly. His 10s average is still almost 1200w...
    P.S. How did you download the raw file? Thought its only possible to download a full GPX file (incl accessory data) from yourself.

    • @johnpeters4216
      @johnpeters4216 3 роки тому +4

      Good spot. There was an old 1400W max power filter set in EnDuRA. I've removed this (will make the fix live sometime tonight). Its doesn't change the narrative though, MvDP hits 1470W very briefly right at the beginning of the sprint but then tails off and only holds his sprint for 10s. To get the data there's a google chrome addon called Sauce for Strava. This allows you to download TCX files for any public activity. Be wary of published power though, if its says its "Estimated" this is from a Strava algorithm not from a power meter and is usually way off for these pros.

    • @wesw6787
      @wesw6787 3 роки тому +2

      @@johnpeters4216 Thanks for the feedback. Great analysis and good tip on the addon! His sprint on Amstel was idd more impressive, but the attack on the strade on the villa catarina is quite similar (purely the final sprint, not the intensity of the overall race like you've shown with the KPI's). He might have hold the power longer than he did if Asgreen was not coming along (but that's an assumption which cannot be proven in the data:)). Bottom line for me is that he still did a very good sprint, but Asgreen's sprint was just phenomenal.

    Server overload ? Bug in my file ? EnDuRA crashes every time I upload my file... (a 4x8 min workout from a certain "Seiler". Coincidence ?)

    The weekend before his win in Tour of Flanders, Asgreen also won The E3 Saxo Bank Classic 2021 and Mathieu van der Poel came in 3. I think Asgreen has grown and simply is better then Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert,at this stage of the season. I see Asgreen as a monster right now 👍🏻
