Very specifically as far as giving this patient control to me it has meant, 1 it works fast. it kicks in so quick that when I'm in pain I don't have to wait 2 hours for my pain meds to kick in like pills.
2. With the pills I have to take them everyday but with marijuana if I'm not in pain today I don't have to take medication today.
3. On a similar note if I'm in the less pain today then I can take less medication if it is marijuana.
4. All pain medication is going to affect your mind clarity on some level, so being able to intentionally avoid a dose or take less for the sake of mental clarity today is something you can't do with pain pills.
5. Marijuana is absent many of the negative side effects that are so common with other medications and it even eliminates many of the bad side effects that other medications have such as sleeplessness, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, weight loss...
Where with my other medications I had to remember them on such a strict schedule or suffer worse side effects and worsening primary symptoms if I let my dosage or schedule fluctuate.
Yes it definitely gives me more "control" over my debilitating symptoms and my day-to-day life.

@@ottotater2787 Thank you for this! I am a cancer patient who is sick of being in pain but also sick of fighting for my opiate pain meds. I'm tired of being treated like a drug seeking fool when my pain is not in control and I need to ask for more. IT's humiliating and degrading at a time I should be focusing on living and enjoying what little time I have left. I just bought some edibles for the first time and after work i am going to try them, s wish me a good experience. I am desperate!
@@JodiW my friend is time to look at other doctors, that's why second and third opinions are so important.
Different doctors have different methods of treating people and if you're not using a doctor that you will agree with then you're not going to be very responsive to his treatments.
Also it's very important that you be reasonably mentally somewhat comfortable with his methods because your immune system is key to your treatments successes so it's important to your day to day stability and your sleep and you're immune system health and function that you find a way to be comfortable with your doctors recommendations and treatments.
If you get a couple of other Dr opinions and they also suggest against cannabis then maybe you will be more comfortable without cannabis being part of your treatment but I think your chances of getting cannabis as part of your treatment rise if you consider other doctors.
My doctor is part of an organization that supports medical cannabis so if I go to a specialist then I know they're going to be cool with me saying I use cannabis and if I speak to one who recommends against me using cannabis then that's likely an actual problem with me using cannabis and not some individual doctors prejudice against weed.
Do consider that THC does weaken your immune system and that in itself is extremely important to remember. your doctor has to weigh out your comfort and peace of mind with other factors that are good for your immune system and there are many treatments and stages of treatments with cancer where THC could be more of a problem on your immune system than of a benefit to other health issues in your treatment.
You should discuss with your doctor the need to hear more reason why he is unwilling to recommended medical marijuana for you in your case. But before getting into all of that with your doctor you need to look on your own into what is available through the medical marijuana program in your state. He may not recommend it to you because the state itself may not have a program that has reasonable value yet. For instance Florida has a full medical marijuana program where Georgia has a CBD only program.
some doctors don't support medical marijuana because there are not beneficial forms available to the patient such as until recently we in FL only had topical and some inhaled weak derivatives.
but recently the state has legalized flower so Florida medical program has become much more reasonable in the minds of the average doctor but only in recent months are FL Dr are now changing what they recommend.
@@JodiW hello I'm curious how your experience with Edibles went? It was a week ago that you said you were going to try some edible and I am quite curious myself. I have seen in the dispensaries tinctures and THC powder as well as smokable/edible cannabis oil. Nothing makes my pain go away but the Cannabis does do me much better overall than the opioid I recently quit.

Agree, he is not cutting edge or brave (this is a subject that is been researched)but his opinion as a Medical Practitioner is of high value and is what Society needs, the spread of this information to make educated choices.
We are the only culture in world history that has viewed marijuana as something bad. We aren't being cutting edge... we are just going back to what we have always known as a specie. Every "cure" or remedy is supplied naturally by the earth. Prescription drugs...now there is something that will mess you up.
Was a bit shocked to see how behind he was was the research. Physicians should always be well versed with the latest medical publications.

Most of us really care and try to help and assist in healing. I know cannabis helps with multiple conditions. I wish people understood that a lot of us doctors have lost many nights of sleep worrying about patients; I speak with many colleagues that experience the same.
@@beachbum4166 then how come when I go to a hospital doctors just leave you in rooms to sit lol they gossip joke and laugh down the hall in the nurses station. More than once I have gotten doctors that sit there and come in and get the results and leave act like it's nothing but a job to them. And the patients are nothing but a fund to their already far paychecks. That's the other thing I don't care for when it comes to you doctors is your pay. Can't stand it. While other people struggle and barely pull minimum wage all the while doctors to driving around in nice expensive cars n live in lavish places. Screw doctors. Until I see doctors n lawyers in all these filthy richy rich working for the same pay as the rest of the people, 🖕🖕🖕

My wife has recently been diagnosed with stage 3B cervical cancer. She has to deal with a lot of pain. She had just received her medical marijuana card, and her marijuana BY FAR, helps the most with her pain, and makes her eat after her chemo. We’re so thankful for the opportunity for her to use it
I used medical marjuana for my back pain working at homegoods for 2 years. Before I discovered cannabis I was on high blood pressure meds and adhd meds. these meds made me depressed and at one point I even started having suicidal thoughts. Once I started cannabis I stopped taking all my medication, I started working out and even lost weight! I even have more concentration from a sativa strain! My personality changed for the better, I started being open minded instead of being against it. I even made amends with my sister who I always ignored. Cannabis brought me out of a dark place and into a place of more learning! Back in 2008 I would probably voted no for its legalization, but now im starting to understand the world from a different point of view. Being open minded is key.
Yeah, not that I was ever against legalized pot, but I too had a major change in me. I'm the calmest I have ever been. No more depression or anxiety none. I have done nearly every drug on the market, in 70's got great help from LSD and mushrooms. Speed does actually kill, so I never got into anything like that. I tried speed everyway it can be experienced, wasn't my thing. Now in my mid 60's, I am the happiest fulfilled calm man I could ever be life is great. I make my own the body rub. It's high in THC it works super fast relaxes the whole skeletal the whole person including the thinking worrying suffering mind. I have a huge story how in less than a day, everything about me and my life changed. How now I am a messenger for this crazy awesome power I have found within myself... I still do pot everyday, and will continue to do so until I die from old age
Kudo to you for using the term "Cannabis" instead of "Medical Marijuana". If we want to change the image of this compound, we need to change the term by which we refer to it.
You're still in a dark place if you think voting for state legalization will change a thing. There's a huge black market becausof the draconian tax rates voted in by liberals. Now the most people you see at dispensaries are white middle class people. Black folks are still dealing it the Democratically-ran cities.

Jacqueline there is more than an adequate amount of evidence on medical cannabis as I'm pretty sure you already are aware of.
Because there are no serious medical studies about medical marijuana... it's about time to change that as fast as possible.

Im thinking it has to do that at a federal level its considered a controlled med class 1 same category has heroin. no actual concise medical research with humans more on animals. If we could past the red tape and see the benefits it has.
As a person who's given up with an autoimmune cluster that has no cures or treatments available at this stage, this talk made me cry. To hear a real professional care enough to just look into this is amazing. I use RSO and it really has changed my quality of life in these harder stages of my illness. I use canabis in other ways as well but rso is what really helps me the most and has become a huge part of my life with diet change and using my mind best I can. Anyway, it's nice to hear this talk. I hope others follow suit. It gives me hope. I believe if the medical industry could perfect combining cannabinoids with modern medication we may even find a cure but I have to think that because hope and faith are what I have left! Loved this talk anyway!

yes and nooooo i can agree i would give my child a tomato but i would not give my child edible unless it was required for a illness and as i do use it my self and completely agree with legalization but i still believe that there should always be laws behind it. like carried amount and age use and permits/ fda approved products to sell yes there some laws are stupid but some are there for a reason and it helps run society

What a great doctor--taking time to work together with the patients he's treating and being open to investigating in such depth the new options becoming available. It's so amazing to hear there are doctor's out there willing to walk as much of a mile as they possibly can in the shoes of the people that come to them looking for help. And the humility at the beginning of your talk, Dr Casarette, very encouraging. I hope more doctor's will choose to follow your great example.

I had been injured from riding dirt bikes when I was a kid. So using medications was second nature for me.But when I was 33 I decided that I needed to get off of all mind altering stuff.l Underneath it all was a hideous amount of depression. It had become life threating to me.
Bravo! Thank you! So insightful, inspiring, and reinstalls a bit of hope in our society and more-particularly, our health system. So many doctors and the entire health system could benefit so much from your story and outlook. It's the scariest thing when you feel your health or mental health is in the hands of someone/people who doesn't/don't really care, know or understand you, and has their own agendas, pre-conceived notions, too many patients, and/or aren't up-to-date on new treatments which are often holistic, safer, have more benefits, and little-to-no risks involved. I really hope and wish that more doctors, schools, and other healthcare professionals take a page from your book. I applaud you, sir!

Everyone thinks their state is the one everyone wants to be. Fact is, the legalization started in Washington and Oregon. 31 states have fallowed and legalized at least medical marijuana. New York hasn't even caught up. It's even legal in Washington DC.
I may not suffer from chronic pain but the control aspect really had me relate, this drug has given more control over my mental health than any priscription. Im down to taking one pharmacutical a day and this, otherwise id likley be on 3 diffrent meds daily.

Thank you Dr. Casarett, for re-inventing the wheel. When I was in medical school, (Johns Hopkins MD '72), our class heard a lecture given by Dr. Solomon Snyder-the person who discovered the opiate receptor. Dr. Snyder explained the benign pharmacology of marijuana's ingredients that were known to be biologically active. He explained how the "set and setting" in which a mind-altering drug is taken are as or more important than the pharmacology. Dr. Snyder has been a courageous advocate for legalization since at least 1970. After med. school, I completed a medical internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. No one contradicted Dr. Snyder. After the internship, I came to Harvard Medical School for a residency in psychiatry. As part of the training program, Dr. Lester Grinspoon lectured on mind-altering drugs. Dr. Grinspoon also told us (shrinks-in-training) that marijuana had useful medical properties. When I finished my psychiatry residency, I was appointed Harvard's first Post-doctoral Fellow in Psychobiology. Over the past 46 years, I have shared my knowledge of drug chemistry with many patients. However, I have always cautioned people that we have no sound information to guide us - largely because the entire spectrum of "mind-altering" drugs have been declared illegal and that has stifled research. All I can say is that Dr. Casarett is a welcome voice. I'm back at Johns Hopkins Advanced Academic Programs studying pharmacogenetics. Never forget that making drugs illegal has created a shadow economy that is far larger than the sum of all legitimate equity markets (I also have an MBA.) Hopefully, this wonderful Ted-talk can be another step toward the safe relief of human suffering.

We also seek it because the pain medication for our chronic pain we have been prescribed didn't work.

A year ago, I would have downvoted this, well,,, because I'm a conservative and we don't like 'drugs'. Then, I watched my Mother slowly pass away over the past few months. I finally looked into the benefits of 'marijuana'. Not the thc stuff - no the anti - - - nausea, pain, anxiety. Unfortunately her platinum insurance wouldn't cover that which might help her.. I wasn't able to pay for it and that's on me, but we can do better as a society, for those in pain. (I know that encompasses a lot of things) I'm sorry, Mom. I should have done more...

I came from a conservative background, and it is long since time that conservatives stopped pretending that we live in a Theocracy or that morality can be legislated. The war on drugs is a great blemish and shame on conservatives (and society in general), but they are not practical enough to notice. The rest of the shame belongs to the "justice" system and companies that actively profit off of keeping drugs illegal even while legal drugs are killing people off.
sorry about your mother man..... i had a grandmother get pancreatic cancer and she had never had any marijuana in her life, i bought some off the streets for her and she was amazed at how much better it made her feel. she ended up smoking it until she passed away, and said she could finally get through her days without feeling so miserable.

I got severe rheumatism and later on depressive phases when I was 25, right in the middle of university. If it weren't for (illegal, in my country) marijuana, I would have never been able to finish my courses. My therapist was sceptic at first, but supported my choice later on when she saw how moderate, controlled consumption helped me.
I really hope that the clinical research and subsequently trials of LSD will go the same way as marijuana did: Casting away the social stigma and really helping those who haven't found relief in conventional drugs, that are often times quite effective, but have severe side-effects.
Are you talking about going vegetarian or vegan?
I changed my diet to exclude meats except for fish, seafood and occasionally chicken, which helped quite a bit.

this is a doctors case for using the dispensing model of medical marijuana to apply to all medicine. i was waiting for a list of health benefits.
He did say that there are REAL health benefits but he was also quick to point up that they were not that significant. See? To remain a doctor in his profession and go public like he did with Cannabis, he has to walk a very fine line between sticking with the medical profession "Official line" and telling the "truth" about the potential of Cannabis. It was revealing to watch his tone changed, him gasping when giving counter-arguments. At least, I appreciated that he dare show his humanity. We need more guys like him.

I love how that initial patient advocated for herself as well as educated her doctor about medical marijuana and the benefits it was bringing to her quality of life.
And it started this journey of education on the doctors end because he is correct, medical school doesn’t teach you about medical marijuana. He wanted to be informed so that he could make the best treatment recommendations for his patients by really listening to his patients, doing his own research and discussing the matter with colleagues.
What ended up being discovered was that the patients who really enjoyed their experience with medical marijuana were not only getting some relief of symptoms due to their medical conditions but were being involved, educated, and most importantly in control.
I think there is so much the medical community can learn on this matter and this presentation gives a great starting point to start that conversation.
AS someone with intractable EPILEPSY it has helped LOWER my Dilantin level back to something safe!

@@NitaFunnyVideo if you use a good 50/50 blend cbd/thc... I lowered my dilantin from 29 to 12 anything over 24? Is toxic. I never worked unless it was 27... a good blend has kept me even and use less dilantin

@@NitaFunnyVideo I smoke in the evenings... It lets me manage the intake, smoke some, smoke a lot if I feel 'twitchy ' Yes I know the smoking thing but I use a water pipe to filter most things. Thc and Cbd are not water soluble so I works...
That is how I use pot when needed!
My Dr. Has given me alprazolam but it is to strong even at 1/2 of 1mg smoking gives me the chance to manage exactly what I need.

today i went to my appointment with the oncology dept at the hospital, i told them that i had used cannabis oil , and he said that the decrease in my psa levels had nothing to do with the cannabis oil, well i choose to disagree, and maybe he should listen to this guy.....
You are right about disclosing having used Cannabis. When I see my doctor in a few weeks, I will make sure not to mention using Cannabis because I don't want to open him the same door, not give him the chance to discredit the product.

Very thoughtful. I have been using med cannabis for Crohn's and I am much younger. I first acquired Crohn's disease when I was a ten year old child. Now seven years later after little gelp from the mainstream medical community, I have found something that seems to demonstrate actual evidence that something is different like ymprovement of my own situation. I am not totally out of the woods, but at least I can see the pastures agead! In my case the pain has ceased, same with nausea, fatigue, and being homebound and virtually married to a toilet! Now I do still have diarrhoea but from on average 7 to 8 times a full 24 hour day, to now about from 3 to 4 times in a 24 hour day. I can even sleep better with THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolacid). Now I try to tell through word of mouth the positive effects of a plant that has been used for medicine at least 5'000 years!
When I was going through radiation (on my brain) I was so nauseous. Medical marijuana was the only thing to stop that terrible feeling. 💜

So enlightening and motivating and restores a glimmer of optimism in our society, especially in our healthcare system; your tale and viewpoint could help many professionals and the entire medical system. The scariest situation is when you feel that your physical or mental well-being is in the hands of someone or people who don't care, know, or understand you and who have their agendas, preconceived notions, too many patients, and/or aren't informed about new treatments, which are frequently holistic, safer, have more benefits, and involve little to no risks. I truly hope that more medical practitioners, academic institutions, and other healthcare workers will learn from you. I commend you, sir.

I mentioned cannabis to my doctor here in Utah. He couldn’t bash it fast enough.... Utah=Hopeless, it’s sad for the patients.
I have stage 4 esophageal cancer that spread to liver , lungs and thyroid, I was treated with radiation and am currently on Quimo therapy, my normal weight was 220lbs. about a year ago but the Quimo therapy suppressed my appetite until I bottomed out at 119lbs. my oncologist suggested trying medicinal marijuana to open my appetite and after starting cannabis treatment about a month ago I am currently eating much better and am currently weighing 141lbs. and gaining! Best suggestion by my oncologist ever! It works!😉

Since the first recorded use of marijuana as a medicinal plant was in 2737 B.C - the first *_RECORDED_* use, as in it was written down by a *_Doctor,_* I would have thought that 4,755 years of evidence that marijuana helps was quite enough evidence to be getting on with.
I suffer from schizophrenia and my doctor doesn't want me to smoke cannabis because it will make me paranoid - but I'm going to be paranoid no matter what after all Ive been through so I might as well smoke it when it helps me with so many other things like depression, anxiety and just makes me happy in general. One of the few things in life that makes me happy.

Although I'm very happy to use the pain gel I get from the Florida medical marijuana dispensaries it doesn't get me high but it helps locally with my pain. Just like any other topical pain creams it works where you apply it but it does not have a mental effect.
Update: 9 months later, I have now removed 4 warts with topical cannabis gel. After two years of difficult walking after the Dr said freezing was the only way to remove them and that was repeated by my dermatologist but I tried the ridiculous first and it worked and worked well. The 4 warts "fell off" my foot and now I have 4 little holes on my foot and I am watching the holes heal after keeping them covered with the gel.
I encourage everyone to read different states health departments information on medical marijuana. you will be very surprised at what has been learned. Keep in mind each state has limited info based on the few limited different things that each state prescribes cannabis for.

Plus state is coming in and shutting doctors down because they been giving pain meds to long then the FBI comes in and say people will have to wait for there meds until we are done investigating the doctor just because the hospital don't want them to be open and the skin color of the doctor plusssss the only doctor that is open that will help patients that has been on opiates for many, many years. So no help of coming down off the opiates with the help of the doctors because the FBI and hospitals. So the best thing is Medical marijuana which has been God sent.

Excellent information! I live in Nicaragua. Every Dr here that I have ever seen, has always recommended marijuana for stimulation of appetite, and for various types of pain, if you one can find it.... VERY illegal here.

Dr. Casarett took a very interesting approach to this issue that I was not expecting. It's true, medical marijuana needs to be rescheduled to allow for further research into what its potential benefits are which leads to most physicians unable to inform patients on its uses. What I wasn't expecting is Dr. Casarett’s conclusion that physicians need to take a page from medical marijuana dispensaries when it comes to listening to patients.
What I think Dr. Casarett was emphasizing in his talk is the ethical standard of shared decision making between patients and their physician when it comes to informed consent. Both parties play extremely important roles, the physician has the medical knowledge, but the patient knows their values, goals, and preferences. Dr. Casarett tells us that in his experience, medical marijuana dispensaries, although not run by medical personnel, take the time to talk to patients and determine what the patient's goals and preferences are to suggest to them which strain the patient should be using. In these cases, chronically ill patients regain some control over their lives because they essentially choose every aspect of this treatment: how to use it, how much to use, when to use, etc.
When physicians don’t take the time to sit down with patients and mutually decide on the patient’s treatment, a large aspect of informed consent is lost. Like Dr. Casarett said, this makes the patient feel like they have lost even more control over their lives and they are more prone to search for alternative medicine. It’s because of this that I must agree with Dr. Casarett, there are a lot of things that physicians can learn from patients who use medical marijuana and medical marijuana dispensaries.
This is exactly what happens in Canada: although I don't have to pay a cent to consult my doctor, the truth is that my doctor has no time for me or anyone else that walk into their office. They are on 15 min appointments and try to stick to the schedule. So much so, that, after 15 minutes in my doctor's office, I know my time is up!! Isn't that crazy? Lucky *some* doctors do take the time to listen but that's not the majority,
Also I'm a patient who has many muscle issues and incredible pain pain all over. But my back takes me out to the point of not being able to walk and I went the painkiller rout and it just doesn't work like marijuana. Its completely unique and covers such a wide variety of illnesses. It's just too obvious that it needs to be studied and given a chance. It's been used almost as long people were cognitively aware of plant medicines.

Great points. Most of the reasons I left traditional medicine. Psychiatry does an excellent job of all listed suggestions but even big system psychiatry can fall away from personalized healthcare due to drive for $$$

Its not a cure all but it does have chemical physiological affects that can trick or distract the cognitive realm or piece (chemical) dopamine receptors into different reactions. It causes hunger laughter and distracted thinking and can have slowing affects on the body with positive effects. By far the neurological effects make this medical plant.

I'm a lupus warrior also dealing with degentive disc disease and sever arthritis in the cervical spine with a straight neck amongst other medical conditions (the list is long). Medical marijuana is literally the only pain. Control that works, it also has helped me keep the lupus in remission and I no longer have to take 99% of other medications I was prescribed. I recently just had a hysterectomy with oophorectomy and was prescribed oxycodone for pain, it didnt help me but the marijuana did. Try to say it doesnt have the benefits that are said that it does is ridiculous. I also have seizure issues and was prescribed high dose neurontin for it, I no longer have to take neurontin anymore because the marijuana has been controlling my seizures and random black outs. I now have been black out and seizure free for 5 years. I now believe in it, where I was skeptical before. The benefits are remarkable, and it has virtually no risk at all. :)

I just went to my doctor today asking if I can get my MMJ card and she said that there isn’t enough research and or evidence that it can be beneficial. She is also against it and never recommends it unless it’s needed, I think that’s disappointing because it’s 2020 and we need more doctors to open up and normalize the discussion around the medical marijuana community it’s just so weird that they will recommend drugs that are potentially very addictive and have giant lists of side effects but they won’t look into one plant.

My firm belief as a medical marijuana patient for the last 5 years is that in order to consume MMJ without worrying about legal consequences, it is extremely important to pay heed of the state wise rules and regulations and understand the impact of these laws upon the average MMJ user.
To give you fair idea, I'm going to take the example of California, which coincidentally is going to legalize recreational cannabis in the coming 2 months. While this may sound like a great news, but before you get too excited, allow me to elucidate several important facts to consider before availing the main benefits of Proposition 64.
The first thing is that as per the said law, growers can grow only up to 6 plants per residence. Plus, taxes on recreation marijuana could be as high as 22%, including sales and excise tax. Plus, various states can impose a further charge on these taxes as well.
But don't get disheartened just now. Because, there is a very simple way by which you can not only save taxes, but also get a higher growing limit (up to 100 plants)
That way, my fellow MMJ users is by buying a medical marijuana card, which would allow users to consume medical cannabis and avail up to 15% tax savings, since they don't have to pay sales duty on cannabis, like recreational users.
thats great except MMJ is to be lumped into rec cannabis @ all states... it's already happened @ every legal state so far mostly already... all the previous benefits of sick people getting medicine get placed into weekend warrior type people who want to party all weekend... costs go up and quality goes down as the plant goes more mainstream.... it all leads to additives etc because breeding becomes mono madness and variety from wild source nature gets squelched into one for all mono-culture mentality...
