This music was SO good and what hurts me about it is that NO ONE back around launch gave Neil Davidge an ounce of praise for this soundtrack, at least that I can remember.
And Kazuma Jinnouchi. He nailed 117.
@@hummingbird71 Kazuma did some top-tier shit in H5
I listen to parts of the soundtrack on Spotify regularly.
There was definitely praise for the music at the time. Not so much for the placement of said music in the game--the triggers were buggy.
It’s probably because it was too different from the originals, and the fact that the 343 hate was and still is strong since they actively hired people who disliked and wanted to change halo just for the sake of change. Halo 4 music isn’t bad by any means, but it was a drastic departure
This OST is criminally underrated
Coming from a Bungie lover, it might be one of my favorites. Runner ups ODST and H2
@@halolytical9375 I think its impressive that it does not borrow from previous soundtracks (especially since those soundtracks were guilty of doing that) and manages to stand on its own merit.
Just like all H4 :)
What are the odds that right as I get to 117, I find a comment with exactly 117 likes! Someone should screen cap this for prosperity, luck or something before someone ruins it 😂
@@ettcha shit, didn't even realise this was popping off

It do be like that tho

John chapter one, verses one through seven.
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.

Arrival was always a banger on that last halo 4 mission
Agreed. It hits so hard, especially within the context of the urgency of what is happening right towards the end of Halo 4.
Arrival kicking in during that mission in my first playthrough is routed in my brain - so awesome!
Halo 4 had a completely different musical direction along with art style. The music reflects it.
"This should be a movie score"
Yeah, if Halo ever gets a faithful adaptation with a high budget!
No more Johnny Rings though... please!
Sadly I think the Halo TV series adaptation blew any chances of that out of the water thanks to having some of the worst writers in all time destroy one of the greatest scifi universes. It's like Star Wars and Disney all over again.
@@thomasbashore all sci-fi and great stories are getting destroyed by these corporations
I thought we have a Halo TV series... Oh, sorry.
I like the heroic feeling of Halo 4’s ost. Chief was missing and presumed dead for many years only for him to return in the nick of time. He gave people hope that everything would be alright. He saved humanity from the Covenant against unbeatable odds and for it humanity praises Chief as a hero. Chief doesn’t think of himself that way but he knows he is the one that motivates people and just his presence gives people hope even when things are bleak.
To directly quote Johnson: "Folks need heroes, Chief. To give 'em hope. So smile, would ya? While we still got something to smile about!"
10:34
"Our duty, as soldiers, is to protect humanity. Whatever the cost."
"You say that like soldiers and humanity are two different things. Soldiers aren't machines. We're just people."
"I'll let you have the deck to yourself."
"She said that to me once... about being a machine."
BRUUUUUH. The nostalgia
Hearing never forget start not knowing that’s what it was going into brought a tear to my eye
I know many dislike 343 but I give it to them. They made Chief more human and relatable. He feels more real than he did in the Bungie era.
Always gets me. Halo 4 had fantastic writing.
Halo 5 was the weird one, Halo 4 was totally fine for me
people were complaining about 4's multiplayer and 5's storyline
but Halo 4 and 6 are great story wise(although tbh I'm quite pissed about what is happening to the Spartans but you know, can't win em all)
22:32

"Our strength is a luminous sun towards which all intelligence blossoms. And the impervious shelter beneath which it has prospered."
"I stand before you. Accused of the sin of ensuring Forerunner ascendancy. Of attempting to save us from this fate where we are forced to... recede..."
"Humanity stands as the greatest threat in the galaxy."
"Refusing to eradicate them is a fool's gambit."
We squander eons in the darkness, while they seize our triumphs for their own."
"The Mantle of Responsibility, for all things, belongs to Forerunners alone!"
"Think of my acts as you will."
"But do not doubt the reality."
"The Reclamation... has already begun."
"And we are hopeless to stop it."
Such a great speech
I was absolutely obsessed with The Didact during Halo 4, I have that whole speech memorized along with his awakening from the Cryptum even still to this day. It's crazy lol
Kinda crazy that in the extended material he ends up working with the humans old and new he processed with the big laser to break through a digital prison and give everyone a sort of paradise
23:28 "This sounds like hope" You better feel hope. When you hear over the radio: Spartan one one seven is joining the battle! you know you will return home.
117 rejoining the fight after being presumed dead for many years when it matters the most.
What it should be considering where Chef’s name comes from.

That piano part of the song “atonement” is homage to every other halo campaign whenever the chief either completes his mission or is beginning anew it’s like the musical catch phrase of his so it’s more meaningful those 4 little piano key strokes then you think to all halo players
This may seem silly, but I was actually crying to your reactions. The music is amazing, but your appreciation and amazement to it made me so thankful that someone else hears and loves these tracks the same way I do. Thank you for choosing to be passionate when you listen to music!
I don't think I've ever seen anyone say the music in Halo 4 is bad. Pretty much everyone agrees the music is fantastic.
@@ppvsonicspy You'd be surprised, unfortunately. There's a lot of areas where I agree Bungie's Halo games were better, but the music for 4 especially is not one of those things. It's different, for sure, but I still love this OST.
DUDE SAME
@@ppvsonicspyyea you’d be unfortunately surprised by how many people just write off halo 4’s soundtrack because “it doesn’t sound like halo”
Dude, I'm the same, the music already makes me cry, but seeing her reaction and appreciation for it, just makes it hit harder.
25:13 You don't know how long I've waited for someone to mention the strings during the climax of 117. The whole song building up to that moment is one of my favorite parts of all the Halo soundtracks.
Atonement can still give me chills even nearly 12 years after I first heard it. I know A LOT of people don’t like Halo 4, but it’s my personal favorite entry of the 343 games. I mean the prologue cutscene is FUCKING GORGEOUS and I thought it was live action for THE LONGEST TIME!!!
You definitely need to do a part 2 because there are some great tracks like To Galaxy, Green and Blue, and Laskys theme that weren't recommended for whatever reason
So true. Green & Blue hits hard
Haven and Solace are hidden gems in this soundtrack. Both amazing and expansive. Haven has a hint of sinister undertones. Solace is just pure love that can only be expressed in music
Agreed
@@halolytical9375 Whoever was the audio director did an absolutely shit job, though. If memory serves, Solace played once in the whole game for about 30 seconds during a cutscene. It's a great song but you don't even get to hear it in the game!
@@Fuzunga yeah. The music was super underutilized in the game. We don’t even get to hear the best part of Solace. I think if they had more time and developed the campaign to be a bit longer, we could’ve had some really good moments
One of my favorite things about Atonement is at the end, there's a reference to the Halo 3 track "Keep What You Steal", which is a song about Master Chief and Cortana's relationship
and since Halo 4 has a heavy emphasis on the two's relationship, it's a great detail having the motif at the end of Atonement, while in Keep What You Steal starts with the motif
At 24:55 you can hear the iconic Warthog Run theme in the background for about 8 seconds and then it transitions into it's own thing, it's amazing

"To Galaxy" is a track I recommend, it's one of my go-tos if I want a quick listen to this soundtrack.
I don't think it's even in the campaign, I only know it from one of the menus
@@hunterh1175the implementation of this soundtrack in the campaign was utterly criminal. To Galaxy has pulled me out of depressive episodes more than once in my life, and I adore the song. Within the H4 campaign, I think you can *faintly* hear it during one of the Mammoth sections on level 5, Reclaimer. I could be wrong. I know they’ve used it in promos over the years, but it was a crime to not use that in a major moment in the game. 😫

Green and Blue is a absolute must. Have have HAVE too, emotional roller coaster of a song especially those who have played the games for years
How they made the music in halo 4 is very underrated. I strongly encourage watching the making of. The digital sounds in particular are incredible
Just wanted to poke my head back in over here and say, thanks for the shout-out and kudos for getting my username's pronunciation right the first time! I often have to give people a syllabic walkthrough of it when they want to give a shout-out, so it feels good to hear people nail it like you did!
My favorite mainline Halo game. Arrival is my go to Halo song. I still remember how I felt the first time I played the game and heard Cortana yelling for Chief. The feels that moment and the ending brought to me......
Yea. That was my reaction to arrival too. Along with the gameplay at that moment made for such an epic experience. Goosebumps every time
19:22 Tremolo! There's technically a couple types of tremolo, but most commonly on a string instrument it's exactly what you described: rapid repetition of a note that isn't necessarily in time.
If you liked the different take on the music in Halo 4, I would recommend the soundtrack of the little spinoff arcade game that accompanied it: Spartan Assault. The soundtrack was done by the very talented Tom Salta, who basically lived and breathed Halo: CE's soundtrack working on the remaster of it, and his take on the music of Halo is rooted in that original soundtrack as much as it is in the new direction of Halo 4's music.
I think the title Green and Blue deserves it's own little reaction.
Arrival is perfect, for me. It plays during the finale of the game. You need to stop the bad guy from winning pretty much.
During the build up you are running to different platforms to hijack some computers, shooting some enemies along the way.
Then it hits.
The enviroment becomes chaotic, the music swells, there are even more enemies. You gotta buy time now while Cortana hijacks the computers. It's you, vs this mechanical army, for the fate of the world, with only the ost pushing you to give it your all, like a real bardic inspiration.
In that moment, you truly become the protagonist.
This is a core memory for me. I'll never forget that feeling.
Part 2 of halo 4 ost? "To galaxy", Lasky's Theme" and "green and blue" should be on the list
This soundtrack did in fact win an award! Guiness World Records has it as the highest rated video game soundtrack on the US albums charts (as of 2014 metrics, 2 years after release).
117 is still one of the greatest songs any Halo game has ever produced in my opinion, the last two minutes give me goosebumps every damn time.
PLEASE DO A PART 2. YOUVE GOT TO LISTEN TO GREEN AND BLUE
Halo 4 is one of my favorites! "117" is always a banger, although I'm sad that "To Galaxy" wasn't in this video. It's the Halo 4 multiplayer theme and it always gets me so hyped up.
green and blue was my personal favorite in the ost
"Weapons! Prepare a firing solution! We promised to get the Chief inside that ship, and I'm NOT about to let that man down!"
Atonement was such a strong way to start off Halo 4 right from the start menu. Set up the general mood you were in for the Reclaimer saga. Others like Aliens and Nemesis emphasized the forebode and direness of the Didact and his Promethean army.
Your reaction to Atonement made me smile. I used to sit in the H4 menu just listening to the music waiting for the grunt to fly by. You should listen to Green and Blue. Its very beautiful & the scene it was used in is heartbreakingly amazing, the name represent Master Chief and Cortana
Arrival is my favourite soundtrack of Halo 4
117 is my second favourite
if you get a chance you should listen to "Revival"! it's the theme song for the villain of this game and it FUCKS
I think there would be excellent people who would react to the green and blue song, which is Cortana's farewell.
You absolutely nailed 117 being hope and sadness, specifically it’s grief. Chief, John-117, saved Earth from the Didact but it cost the life of one of his closest companions, Cortana. As far as anyone knew at this point she was dead, basically tore her own code apart to protect John.
Is nobody going to talk about the fact that Neil Davidge, the composer of this game, produced for Massive Attack???
I have been waiting for this one since you did Halo 3 and said you’ll be reacting to all the Halo games music. And Halo 4 OST may not have been done by Mr O’Donnell but it is still an amazing one with a lot of emotion! Green and Blue also just hits hard when you know the context in the story. Thank you for finally reacting!
Green and blue is so amazing.
Nemesis hits HARD!
While most of Halo 4 was composed by Neil Davidge, Arrival and 117 were composed by Kazuma Jinnouchi, who later went on to compose the music for Halo 5. Which, quite honestly, was about the only good decision made on Halo 5's production. Blue Team, Light is Green, Warrior World, Dominion, The Trials, and Crypt are some highlights from that OST. Would love to hear actual movies made with the Halo OST's so they will get more respect.
I’d argue the only fumble with 5 is its story. 4 had combat and pacing issues but was a decent story and a great OST.
Also for context for 117
Imagine you're flying a space fighter carrying a nuke
Trying to reach a world ending weapon to destroy it, destroying turrets and dodging obstacles desperately trying to save earth
That was the quickest intro I´ve ever seen, I wish more people would do the same, was fuunny tho, caught me off guard
Watching your reaction and commentary makes me happy 😊 Thank you!
Gears of war needs to be on the list someday
Missed the track "Requiem". One of the most unique Halo Tracks ever.
Halo 4 OST is built different 👌117 plays strongly at the end of the game (end credits) and we hear the main boss The Didact giving a monologue as Master Chief 117 walks like a badass hero through the mega ship Infinity and he gets his armor taken off as the music just builds like it did towards the end with the brass. I had the biggest goosebumps through the cut scene. She really needs to watch halo 4 end monologue
Arrival is absolutely awesome
Green and Blue hurts me so good 😅 I’ve been a long time Halo fan and whenever I hear it, I remember the scene in the game and it makes me cry.
I like how all the Halo games have their own music that is distinct but uniquely Halo and I don't think any Halo game missed on the music department you can tell where each song is meant to be in the games, for example, Atonement and 117, Atonement is the main menu theme and 117 is the end of the game, this goes for all the Halo games also!
I've loved so much of the Halo music over the years but for some reason Halo 4 is the only album on my phone. It's so well rounded.
No one recommended Solace or Green and Blue 😢
Pleas do a part 2 to H4 soundtrack, Their is some official remixes of the H4 soundtrack that slap so fucking hard as well.
Best Halo soundtrack in my opinion.
Halo 4 has some fantastic music. Arrival is so great because of the stakes at play in the game at that point. It matches the action taking place and the monumental push the Master Chief is doing to stop the Didact.
When she said 117 sounds like pure hope she got it right because Master Chief is #117 and he is humanities hope.
it's mental to think that Atonement was the *Title screen/main menu music.* It was the first thing you heard after the logos finished whipping past, the first piece of in game music you hear in Halo 4.
It has been quite some time since I played Halo 4, even on MCC, so I very much could be wrong, but I do not recall that song ever playing in a mission or cutscene.
23:30 Yup, that's the protagonist theme, Master Chief's theme
I'm smiling at your reactions, because they're peak in what a reaction to these tracks should be!
This might need a part 2... Halo 4 has some of the best music in a 343 game, Hyper recommend Green and Blue, Revival, Wreckage, Requiem.
Yea I had a feeling she would like 117 🤣
Arrival is my No.2 Halo piece after Halo 4’s rendition of Never Forget.
Unpopular opinion at the time of Halo 4's release, but i liked some of the music and some of the new art style. I'm happy to know that now is at least accepted.
I wouldn't go that far. It's definitely not the worst to come from 343 though.
I like that some of the mega Bungie era fans went back to play it again. A lot ended up saying it’s not as bad as they remember and actually kinda liked it. I know I actually enjoyed 4 quite a bit. Some parts were annoying but overall I liked it. Though I will say it could have had better pacing.
@crazyguy_1233 Lmfao, well, given the news that Joe Staten didn't leave 343, they fired him. I'd say that awards me the right to hate everything 343 has ever and will ever make.
@@rexskirmisher4040 Frank. No further justification needed, although plenty exist.

For all the flak Halo 4 gets, even with it's campaign which I think is actually pretty great story wise, the soundtrack has always been top tier. It strays from Martin's music a lot, but is great in it's own way and clearly respects the original themes. I love the OG trilogy music more, but 117 is top 3 in all of Halo imo.
It’s definitely different but I like that they kept some motifs from the previous OSTs.
I stood by this at launch and I STILL do. Halo 4 is a great game! Not perfect and its defo not on the level of the previous games, but for a team brand new to working with each other; taking on a series as big and ingrained in the public consciousness as Halo? They did very well!
To me, Halo 4 is 343's most complete experience at launch and its the 343 game I feel had the most passion poured into it.
I hate how 343 over-course corrected Halo 4 in the wrong ways and ditched Halo 4's entire story set up... I really wish Halo 5 was a proper contination of Halo 4...
What could have been...
I don't care for halo 4 much if at all, But I have to agree with you that it was the most complete entry. I enjoyed playing 6 more but it objectively isn't a complete experience like 4 was. Also agree they over corrected and in the wrong ways, emphasis on wrong ways. With the even more poorly received 5 and another course correction 6 was doomed from conception you just can't make a series work if you have to pivot after ever entry.
You can't forget Never Forget, it says it in the name, I'd put Halo 4's Never Forget up there with 2 and 3's Never Forget.
Is there going to a Part Two? 'Green and Blue' is the best title on that disc...
Classic Halo's music is legendary, and Halo 4's while not quite on the same level, is still so, so good, and criminally underrated. There are some good scores, but "Arrival", man... "Arrival" hits so hard every time... Actually makes me emotional... "117" is also up there...
Edit: I would like to change my statement after listening to Halo 4's soundtrack again. It is legendary along with classic Halo's music... Neil Davidge did an incredible job, and deserves more praise for his work on Halo 4...
Halo 4 soundtrack is fantastic. It is different from previous Halo, but sets the tone perfectly for the Reclaimer saga. So many tracks to remember. Some I uniquely link with the Forerunners. Love it 😊
Btw, there are also several shorter pieces in this soundtrack, which I really like, such as Requiem or Wreckage

I still hold 117 up there as one of the best Halo tracks, period. Criminally underrated by the community due to it not being Bungie, but the 343-era games still had killer OSTs.
Halo 4 is still an amazing soundtrack all these years later. Really stands out among the series and Arrival is probably my favorite track in the entire series overall
I remember the chills of hearing Atonement for the first time when booting up Halo 4 on launch day.
It WAS a fitting soundtrack that marked the end of a beautiful franchise that helped drag me through my difficult childhood. I will miss you Chief...the REAL Bungie Chief. Im still hoping you will wake one day, cause i need you🫡
People absolutely don't give game scores/osts enough credit, there is another channel I have been dabbling in called MarcoMeatball and he has been showing people like classical musicians and industry professionals video game music for the first time and I have been really enjoying the different takes but it goes to show that these songs can be treated with the same respect as traditional orchestral music and that there is more to video game music than chiptunes and the retro sound that came from consoles from the late 80s early 90s, as the decades have gone one the music has evolved and adapted to the different uses and needs for the different games they are made for. Tracks made to accompany emotional moments that rival traditional media, stir anxiety and fear, and most importantly in a lot of cases adapt to what is happening in the game to accompany whatever the player is doing. Halo has some of my favorite music for that.
Oh that was nice! I hope a part 2 will come up because there's a lot more and especially that... really eerie one. Epic
I never understood why people disliked Halo 4.
It’s such an amazing game, with an amazing story, plot, impact, worldbuilding, gameplay, lore, and of course, absolutely stunning music.
Halo 4 is my favorite Halo game. The aura of mystery and discovery that the entire game held. It was amazing.
Yes!!! I loved your Halo series. I used to be a music theory/performance Major, with a specialty for Trumpet performance. I even recently Re-Arranged "Never Forget" From Halo 3's OST for a Brass Quintet :) (Just wanna add, Halo 4 OST version of "Never Forget (Midnight Version)"... I have to say... while Martin O'Donnell set the framework for that piece with his original in Halo 3, the composer seriously has me internally fighting with myself on which one is better, in my opinion because his take on it is SO Gorgeous.)
But I've always had the Halo OSTs in my playlist, since I was in Middle School. I've always loved Martin O'Donnell / Michael Salvatori's Compositions for the Bungie Halo Games. And before Halo 4 release, and before Halo 5 released, they released the OSTs first. The MINUTE they were available, they were in my iTunes.. Neil Davidge did a great job on Halo 4... And I'm so happy that he paid so much homage to Martin's Compositions. If you listen to the pieces he wrote, even in the one's you heard in this video, he does a call back to the main Motif's in so many different ways... It really helped the players/fans of Halo to keep their connection with the game despite its difference in art styles.. My favorite track was "Atonement", the first piece you observed here. Vocals were just beautiful, and that French Horn solo.. GA!!!
I love hearing other musician's reactions to things I've always loved and were near and dear to my heart. Thank you for having an open mind to the music, and the games I've followed, and grown up playing & feeling the emotional reactions that were intended by the Composers & developers of these stories since I was 6 years old

Halo 4's soundtrack is so underrated
some of the tracks here like 117 and Arrival remind me of some heroic music you'd here in old Cod games like MW2. different times man.
Admittedly kind of surprised To Galaxy didn’t make it into this. You only heard it in the post game during the prelude to Spartan Ops but it was all but synonymous with what humanity was becoming in the post-trilogy era. Stepping onto the galactic stage in a proper sense.
Id love to see you hear the music from Risk of Rain 2.
It’s so unique and complex that I feel like you’d have a blast diving into it!
No Green and Blue? That's the best one from Halo 4 IMO.
When the video ended my immediately thought was how did she not listen to Green and Blue. I thought it’s one of those top 5 from the soundtrack.
The one thing Neil Davidge did really well was keep with the tradition of having a different identity that fits with the story. CE, 2, ODST, 3, Reach, Halo Wars, all had their own theme in a sense. While the rhythm and the 'theme song' itself stayed the same, they had different styles.
I remember listening to the H4 soundtracks when I was highschool and this video took me back to that time for a few minutes 🥲
