    The reason why piracy is so highly developed in Russia and there are no laws that prohibit us from doing this. Therefore, after Steam banned people from buying games from Russia, we will not stop playing them, but we will just download them for free, and they will not do anything for us :)

      Same here, I feel like it’s a relatively good policy, because you don’t spend $70 for a piece of shit game, and can tell if you want to actually buy it or not, without coming to the conclusion 2.1 hours after playing.

      FYI. "First world country" refers to Russia and USA. Like, that's literally the definiton of the terminology regardless of the quality of life there.

      @@rheokalyke367 second world doesn't exist really, the terms appeared in the cold war, 1st world being USA-aligned, 2nd world USSR-aligned, and 3rd world just neutral, but now there's just 1st world (The ones that look modern enough) and 3rd world (The rest of countries)
      I never heard anyone referring to any country as second world, other than for a possible definition of "it's a 3rd world country but can be 1st world if they did a bit more work"

      Honestly if you look at statustics then most piracy rates are heavily exaggerated. Pirates who would've paid otherwise have never been a majority or even a substantial minority. Piracy alone will never make or break a release.
      And for indie devs piracy often works as viable advertisement, as the visibility they get can get lead to more sales in the long run than short-term losses from piracy.

      ​@@notalamenameyes, steam is not bad as a platform. their sales are frequent and there are usually some good games available for cheap. it's also nice when games integrate well with their API, so you can join your friend in some game by just clicking "join game" beneath his name. steam has been consistent over the years so i really can't hate on it. what nobody asked for was for ubisoft to make their stupid platform and require you to sign in and run some uplay garbage in the background every time you want to play a game. as if people are going to start using their idiotic platform when we have things like discord and steam. I don't even play ubisoft games anymore because i hate uplay that much - just trying to play far cry 3 which i have had for many years requires me to sign in, and then there's some issue starting the game so i have to restart uplay and sign in again, and maybe it works this time but maybe not, and that's when i give up and play minecraft

    God I hate the phrase, "If buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing", it literally never was theft.
    If it was theft, then it would reflect in sales, but since piracy is tapping into a market of those that can't buy the game, then all piracy will do is make the game sell more.
    This has literally been observed in multiple studies, even one by the UN, where piracy increased sales for both video games and music, (though in that one not movies but maybe don't spend so much on advertising lol).

    If I remember correctly only the uploader of the content is breaking copyright law, so only they would be persecuted. Along with the fact that they likely bought the content which they are uploading makes this whole piracy thing more like an illicit charity.     In the country I live in, "Brazil", it literally makes no sense to buy games here, even some indies are very expensive due to our currency being devalued :(. an example of this is Hades II, which is very expensive here.     sometimes the pirates generate revenue for the creator and publisher which otherwise would not have been made, its a form of free advertising.

    The question is, what is the consequential differwnce between playing a game your friend bought and pirating? They seem the exact same

      If you just borrow the game, it's nothing. If you copy the owned game, then it's considered piracy.

      I guess it only matters for multiplayer.
      Pirating a copy to play online with your friend means two copies are required, vs playing at a friend's house means you're missing that feature.
      Also, you should look up the new family share steam is rolling out

      They are the same. The only difference is the company can't stop you from lending your physical copy to a friend.

      the difference is, for the former developers received money while for the latter they don't
      unless you meant: "someone's friend bought the game while said person pirated it", in which case i don't think there's any real difference

    there is a world or maybe an alternate dimension where steam is actually the illegal platform selling games and the legit publisher is actually the pirate bay
