The biggest downside I can think of with Lightroom is that you need to always work with a catalog so people always need to have a backup of that catalog as they do get corrupted occasionally
Yes, that's true, when I worked in the UK I used to use a different catalogue for every client. One huge catalogue is a very poor practice. For the same reason that one camera card or one external drive is a poor practice.
