To someone who has yet to start her flock of chickens (however small it might be, lol) this was a very helpful video. Thank you, Jess, and thank you, Tom!
Dont be shy jump in, hens are easy to care for and chicken berries are a great reward. Find a neighbor and split a order great way to gain a friend and these guys birds are always worth it.
@@master6676 I have some very large dental bills (I am talking thousand upon thousands) that I have to take care of first. Don't assume it's about being reticent.
If you go back next year, please consider flashing pictures of the breeds in one part of the screen. More work for you, but possibly more profit for them, due to the "...Oooh, I want that" factor. Love your page. Happy farming
Got my first MMc catalog in about 1964. Like you, I memorized it. I was so into chickens and have been ever since. When I went to college, I majored in agriculture, and naturally, had to take a Poultry Production class. I was so bored because I felt like I knew more than the elderly professor doing the teaching, especially during the part of the class that dealt with chicken breeds. I found it interesting when you two were giving your favorites, that appearance had such a large part of your choices. Most UA-camrs talk about the best breeds for production and dual purpose and so on. While I too am a lover of pretty chickens, I mainly consider production for my favorites. However, I am guilty of trying to breed my Ameracanas for the blue/gray color just for fun. Had a major setback when my only blue rooster died and I simply could not find another gray rooster in our area. I also will not incubate any cream or pink eggs from them. Outcrossed with white leghorns one year to increase size and number of eggs. I am going to outcross again this year because egg size has shrunk again. Naturally, I have a lot of birds with single combs and no beard but that is OK for what I am trying to do. Also been breeding other breeds to ISA browns for about 10 years, saving back roosters to breed to the ISA brown hens. Now have a small flock of birds that are genetically about 127/128th ISA brown. Have to order new ISA Brown pullets ever couple of years, but this year I have a couple ISA brown roosters to breed to my pullets. Going to reverse the the gender thing this time. I could go on and on (like I haven't already) but thanks for the video.
I want to start breeding and hatching my own chicks, but I don't understand breeds. Can you take an Isa Brown rooster and hen and still get Isa Brown, or would they revert back to what they were originally crossed with? I just want to know when I hat h eggs that I'm getting what I wanted. Is there a book or info on how to get different varieties?
@@frugalmomofmany There are a couple lines of thought. You could still have ISA browns if you put a rooster with hens of the same breeding (genetics), but the problem is that since they are hybrids, you won't have any consistency. i.e. it could be risky. My practice has been to use a different production breed rooster to breed to my ISA hens. Conversely, you could use an ISA rooster to breed hens of a different production breed. I did this for years and my chickens were 127/128ths ISA brown genetically although they looked nothing like hatchery ISA browns. Inbreeding is what you must avoid, so breeding a hatchery rooster to my hens, or one of my roosters to a hatchery flock of hens avoids that. No, I don't know of a book although there may be a magazine article somewhere that might explain the details. This may sound complicated but as you go through it year after year, it makes sense.
I never knew there's so many different breeds of chickens. I knew eggs were brown or white, bit didn't know they could be speckled or blue. When I was a girl my Mom had some large white chickens, some for eggs & some for eating. I made sure I was hard to find when I knew we were having chicken for supper!!! Didn't want to be around the process of yard to table...lol. This is very interesting. May get me some chickens if my son's can help me with fencing & a coup. Love to here them crow & cluck!!! I'm just an animal person, 4 paws, 2 legs, feathers, fur it doesn't matter. Love all of God's creation. Thank you for teaching me new things. Love the videos & devotionals. Bless you Jess & Murray McMurray people!
I have SOOOOO enjoyed your 3 videos at Mc Murray's Hatchery. I have always been fascinated by all birds. There is such diversity in chicken breeds.... they are amazing and beautiful animals. Thank you Jess, Tom (and Miah) for bringing us along on this field trip. I loved seeing the baby chips. The ones with the Egyptian eye liner blew my mind.
Oh my goodness, such a fun video! Thanks for sharing your adventure! We currently have 6 hens in the coop, 24 5wk old chicks in the garage, and 3 one week old frizzled chicks in the house... chicken math is definitely a real thing!!🙈
Hey Jess, love your videos. As someone who has NO CLUE what each type of chicken looks like - this was a tough vid of yours to watch because its a Q&A without a lot of movement. Would have loved some photos of some of the specific breeds you were covering tiled in the video. Might also help with some of the terminology too. :) All my best,
I never knew I could be so excited to see a upload! Just recently came across ur channel a few weeks ago cuz I'm trying to start my own homestead. Chickens and garden first and want to slowly add
I live in Florida. My chickens are pets so they are spoiled. I put usb fans in each nest box as well as a exhaust fan. I have a mixed flock of Polish and colored egg layers.
We are about to order more chickens for our 6 acre homestead. We love our Orpingtons. ❤️🌻🐔❤️Amazing to see family owned businesses that have been in business for many many years. So exciting to watch this. Thanks for sharing and interviewing McMurray Hatchery. I learn something new every time. 🌻🐔❤️
I recently agreed to buy 6 chickens, ended up with 27. Love them all. The Orpington loves to sit on my lap, Barred Rocks are friendly, Wyandottes go back and forth. Rhode Island and New Hampshires coming around more and more. Cochins are super friendly and curious. The only ones stand offish are the Easter Eggers, they don't want me to handle them.
I ordered my 10 chicks yesterday and they will be mailed in May. I can hardly wait!!!! I still live in the city, but at least I can have a small flock. God Bless! Carmen
We are just outside the city centre in Sydney (45 minute walk) and just about every 3rd house has a few hens. We’ve been here 13 years and have had 2 lots of ISA browns, but this time we are doing 2 ISA and 2 Australorps. The Australorps (cross btwn Orpington and few other breeds) are the sweetest hens to have around children and are also great layers. Bonus is that they are very well adapted to the Australian heat and cold extremes.
I loved this video! I know it's a couple of years old but, I learned so much! I'm just now planning on getting a few chickens and when I saw you had this video I knew I'd get good info! I've also requested one of the McMurray catalogs! Thank you, Jess, for all you do and all the information you share! God bless you!
Hi Jess, thanks for this video. I caved to my long time desire to have a few chicken today, it was totally unexpected. I had gone to purchase a flower pot and asparagus starts (which by the way I didn’t get)😳 instead I found myself standing over baby chicks and ducklings. I have to say that when I decided on the spur of the moment to make the leap to bring a “few” chicks home and maybe a duckling all because I fell in LOVE with two americanas the next thing I knew I brought home those two plus 2 cuckoo Marans , 3 golden comets , 2 silver laced , 2 golden laced polish, and 3 pekin ducks!! even though I don’t have a space prepared outside for them I’m obsessed with them and want to go back and buy the entire flock of Americanas.!!! I think I already need an intervention😳
This was the best video on chickens that I have seen. It has been a few years since I had chickens but hopefully soon I will have my flock again and enjoying them every day! Thanks and keep up the great work!
I've been a chicken man all my life and your trip was very educational and fun to watch. It's not hard to tell your a chicken lover to.. you done a very good job and for that advertising videos I hope you get your chickens Free.. god bless you and your family
I have solid Black Marans and Black & Blue Copper Marans. Our egg color on our Blk Coppers are the literally the color of Herseys Special Dark Chocolate. Took many yrs of selective breeding to get them that dark though, while still breeding to the APA Standard. Being in FL we also have Key West Chickens we rescued. Also Isabel, Lavender, & Black English Orps we got from a great breeder.
you all probably dont give a shit but does someone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid forgot my password. I love any tricks you can offer me!
@Callan Clyde I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Thank you so much for this lot of info, mom raised chickens some 40yrs ago 😅, now we’re about to get our little flock delivered and I want to learn as much as possible. I just ordered my Mc Murray’s catalog from the link below(thanks for that as well ) excited to keep on learning. Keep up the good work.❤
I hatched some Americanas 14 years ago and my last hen just crossed over the bridge this winter. She layed until last year. Not every day, but probably every third day. My Chipper's was the best and so friendly
Thanks So Much For All This 🐔Chicken🐓 Information 👍🏻😁 It's Much Appreciated! Much❤Love & 🙏🏻😇🙏🏻God Bless Many Thanks Jess & To The McMurray Chicken Family Farm👍🏻😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
We are in NY so not as warm and not sure how long it’d last down south but maybe this would help. My mother had told me to toss a frozen bottle of water into the chickens water to keep it cool. I’ve only had to replace the frozen bottle during the day a handful of times throughout our hottest part of summer. 👍
When I was growing up we lived on like half an acre and I was able to have chickens ❤and we had a mix out there we had some americanas which I Loved! And some road islands reds and some barred rock ,we even had a few white leghorns but one of my favorites was a Bantam silkie and they had those feathers on the legs and my little black hen from those Bantam silkies was a real good sitter she was a great brooder.
We are saving up to buy a small farm in a couple of years and I am super excited to have chickens. I’m really happy to see this video, because I really had no idea which breeds I should buy.
It has been my dream to have chickens. I live in NYC but I’ll have to speak to my landlord for permission ! Plus I have 5 cats Anyone else has cats and chickens? Can they get along? My top 3 chickens are Orpingtons (all colors or types.), Salmon Faverolles, and Cochins. I do have other breeds of chickens that I like but those three chicken breeds will forever be my favorite birds because of how calm and sweet they are.
My 11 year old son made a list after looking through the Murray McMurray Hatchery catalog of the chickens we should get. Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds, Black Australorps, Barred Rock and Wyandottes are on our list but before we can get chickens, we need a coop and run. Until my husband's work picks up that's all on hold so I guess God is saying "Wait". I am so impatient lol.
Awesome amazing and beautiful thank you so much for sharing your wonderful visit with mc Murry hatchery 🥰 I loved it 🥰🥰🥰 Iam crossing my fingers that they will send me a catalog in Australia, I know I won’t be able too order from them but it’s such an amazing resource to have. I’ve just got my first chicks that are lavender astrolorps and a black too I super excited to see their eggs 😁
I’m sure I’ll comment more after I watch the entire video, but can I just say how much I want that McMurray Chick Hatchery sigh hanging behind you two??? And I’m requesting a catalog! So happy you visited and asked such great questions!
Will Tom have a video of his English chicken adventure? That would be so cool. Thanks for the vid .... although I've never had chickens, (my Grandmother did) as a flytyer I've had a fascination with the different breeds and breeders since the late 60's. Super helpful video. Wanted to start a flock this year but had some specific wants. This helped me narrow down my search. Just ordered 15 chicks from them.
I put frozen berries in the water in the summer sometimes or some ice. It's so cute watching them bob for berries and it keeps them cool and hydrated.
This is so creative its so hot where we live and I worry about my chickens thank you for sharing this idea!
Little fluffy potato chips is hysterical. 💕.
Watching these two geek out over chickens puts a huge smile on my face. They should start a chicken pod cast. I know I'd subscribe to it. 😊😊😊

Super helpful video. Wanted to start a flock this year but had some specific wants. This helped me narrow down my search. Just ordered 15 chicks from them.
Of all the chickens my favorite 2 will always be Black Sexlinks and Red Stars. Best layers and meat birds hands down.
Thanks for the catalog link got it ordered
