Hi Fred....if you get a lot of noise (QRM / QRN) have you considered using a horizontal antenna? I used to have a vertical antenna (home based) and I always got about S7 or more noise. I changed to a horizontal antenna and now the noise level is down to S3 - S4 and sometimes even lower on mid-band and low-band. The signal strength is usually also down by 1 or 2 S-points maximum but the audio quality is excellent so the small signal loss doesn't matter if you can hear the person you're talking to. When you're "talking skip" the polarisation of your antenna doesn't really matter either because it will often get changed en route through the ionosphere.
Hi looking for some advice I'm think about getting the ss 9900 for my truck but I have a midland alan 42 which I blown the fuse with the lighter socket. Now I connect it to the 12v hella socket but want a bit more power. Would I be OK plugging the ss 9900 into that socket or would I need to buy more stuff. Also looking to get the sirio 5000 but not sure what mag mount to get.
Watched all your video's fred, i am trying to buy a CRT9900 as my first radio for 30 years, still thinking about the twig? is there any chance you can do a video on grounding a mast and RF reducing please
Hi Mark. Most people hang out on the 19 FM around this area. Yes USB is a different mode to FM/AM. You will need a multi mode radio such as a CRT 6900N to use single sideband communication.
aquired a crt ss9900, which was programmed to the uk cb freqs. i stupidly reset the rig, and now they are not in the mem banks for the uk. i have ordered a programming lead but it wont be here until friday of next week. Do you know of a way to edit a band a,b,c,d,etc so i can manually add the uk cb channels back in.
Yes. The 9900 memory function is totally basic and a bit odd.. For example if you go to channel 1 on say band E and then switch to freq mode and change it when you switch back to channel mode the freq does not go back to the preset but stays at the last freq used. Its really easy to start tuning around and cock up the channel presets I know ive done it. To put them back try this. Set a band. Start on channel mode and on channel 1 then manually dial in the freq for UK FM Channel one. Switch back to channel mode and do the same for FM UK channel 2. Hopefully when you go back to channel 1 it should be correct. Hopefully
Hi Fred in the shed I'm 15 and I want to get into cb's I can't afford to spend loads of money on it i would have it as a home base (as I don't own a vehicle yet) I was looking on Amazon at the TTI TCB-771 i got a couple of questions about it and I would like help with Would it work as being used as a home base Is it a decent one for the money And do I need a swr meter on it If there are any other cb's you think would work better for me please let me know If you got any other information for me please let me know would be great help (sorry for sounding like a nooby to cb's) Also if there is any websites you recommend Cheers Daniel
Hi Daniel. The 771 is a good start radio. Also consider the smaller and cheaper CRT One, the newer model with signal meter. Cheapest homebase antenna choice is the £30 Silver Rod on a pole. A £10 SWR meter is a good safe bet as it helps you to tune the antenna and checks that your radio is not receiving too much reflected signal. I recommend the Charlie Tango Forum which also has an active Facebook Page. I have video's on fredintheshed1 channel showing a very basic silver rod set up and buying advice.
Hi Fred .. I want a cheap CB for my car, and I consider either the CRT 6900 or the CRT 9900. Which one would you choose? I have heard that the 9900 is not that stable on frequency compared to the 6900?

Hi. Phil. The Hi Cut is a very useful audio filter which takes away the high hiss you get. Works well on both FM and SSB. Only issue is that it can filter out very distant signals.
Yes a good shout. It was one of the things i turned off along with the stand light and led lights. Its dropped back to around S3-4. I need to check it on the HF radios but not really had the time to get in the proper shack.

Hi Fred.
I have been told that the bhi external dsp speakers are good for getting rid of noise but are expensive.
73's Alan ct2661.
Hi Alan. Yes they are pricey but some people swear by them. I have DSP on the Yaesu 450 but dont really use it all that much.
Your a hard working guy no apologies mate

Depends on the wiring into the 12 volt Hella socket. You really need a 20 amp run from the battery.

Funny you mention that Peter. I really need to ground out my Antron 99. I have the copper rod so its a job for the milder weather in 2018.
Hey Fred I use a car mounted crt one using fm and am what channel in Hertfordshire should I use and is usb different to fm or am

The 6900N is prob easier to use mobile as it had duel displays. In truth both CRT radios can be slightly off freq when warming up from cold.
@@CB-RADIO-UK Thank you for answering. The 9900 seems to have a little more output, is it something that is worth considering?
The SS9900 is identical to the AnyTine AT-6666.
Anytone 6666 yes.

Hi Phil. Means the High Cut noise filter is turned on.
Have just come back on radio and busy here on South Coast. Can you explain more as so new to this. Was on in 81 and now back.

Hi. My call is not a Ham call sign but a Charlie Tango UK Call sign. Its a forum group for CB radio. Thanks.
What is Muppets like these days, is it worthwhile?
Depends on your location. Can be a bit rough n ready like its always been. Bit of a mix around my area.
A charging laptop could cause interference? 😀
Hi mate. Tried disconnecting that when noise level increased. No change :-(
fredintheshed1 just a thought cos the power supplies on some laptops are known to cause problems.
