Beautiful! I remember from your last video that your grandma said to make it your own, and I thought that was such a sweet and loving thing to tell you. You've done a beautiful job and I love how you honor your family throughout the house. ❤
Thank you so much! Lovie was one of the greatest supporters in my life. I come from a long legacy of hardworking folks who built runways for their children to prosper, always creating a solid foundation to build upon. I owe so much of my success to them and those values, so honoring them in my home and in how I plan to raise my future children is something I take pretty seriously. I really appreciate your kindness. Thank you for watching! 🙌🏼
Gen X chiming in! So, while it may not be everyone’s cup of tea (taking down walls etc.) you did exactly what your grandmother said to do and made it your own! You struck a perfect balance between updating it and holding onto a lot of memories through pieces of furniture throughout the home. The MCM mixed with modern furniture is perfect too! Great job!
I love that you kept the original spirit of the house while still making it your own. Also very smart to leave yourself the option of making changes in the future as your life evolves. You still have mostly a blank canvas there. The dinner bell is the sweetest. I had a close relationship with my grandmother too, so it brought a little tear to my eye. You really have honored her. Enjoy your “new” home!
I KNOW your Grandparents are so proud of you. While this may have been your Grandparents house, I bet they wished they could have done all these upgrades. Back in the day, no one could afford anything upgraded due to the economy at the time and the low retirement incomes. They would have LOVED everything you did. The upgrades are amazing and beautifully simple and your style, you respected the home. It is your home now and you have to make it yours. I absolutely love the the openness in your design. This house is your Grandparents forever hugging you and with you. HE DID GREAT!!!! Oh I have that red base on the dinning table. Love the pool table. I worked for Coors for 10 years, all my signs are in the garage with my dart board. I love the bell, pool table, hat and more that you keep as your favorite memories. Absolutely stunning. 68 in Texas.
What a beautiful outcome of your home , such a soothing place to relax and create so many memories with friends and family ...I look forward to the extra touches of art and accessories in your magical castle me handsome man ❤❤
Thank you! I like having people over, and I can tell you there has been more life in those rooms in the last year and a half I have lived here than in the previous 49 years! 😂 NOBODY EVER WENT IN THERE!? Let's catch up soon!
@@GavinMalm A parlor was usually a "formal living room" for when guests were over and/or for entertaining purposes. I never understood the point of them; if I had one now, the family living room would probably always be messy because no guest would ever see it lol.
Wow, it looks beautiful, and I love how you have integrated your family history into it, as well as real artwork! LOL, OMG a super soaker, childhood memories!
Going with cased openings instead of a wide open single room look helped you retain some formality, while simultaneously making the house more usable! Great job!

Gavin. Thank you for sharing your home with us! I find inspiration it in, and it makes me want to do something similar with my childhood home in Alamogordo.
Pocket doors would work for the primary to give you privacy whenever you want it and hidden in the walls whenever you don’t. Nicely done renovation! Hopefully you make a garage makeover video, you can raise those door entrances and get a taller door. Look into a roll up door if you’re thinking about doing a 4 post lift, will give you extra space.
I guess I was one of those that was shocked by the removal of all the walls. I see now it was a good idea. Hello from Georgia! I'm a new subscriber. I'm a 75 yr old widow and I've always enjoyed home renovations. I love the bell you kept in the kitchen and I love that you share your memories & talk fondly of your grandmother . I love the backsplash in the kitchen. Maybe the ceiling fan in the living area should have been a flush mount? I agree with you about the vanities. I love you went with white walls. Love what you have done so far. how lucky you are to have such a nice garage. We had a huge garage at our last house. It would hold four cars, but it was drive under and I hated the steps. I moved after my husband passed away to a ranch house, no steps. Keep up the good work, a little at a time! Are those Belmont cabinets, metal or wood?
Right! The house already struggled to get natural light in the front of the house because of the covered patio entry shading the windows. Having lived there for almost two years, I can tell you it was the right move. Thanks for watching Ragina.
Your house is spectacular! What a beautiful tribute to your grandparents and to your family. It's just beautiful. (I especially love your white appliances in the kitchen. I'm so over stainless steel.)
I look forward to seeing some color. It’s a great idea to wait until you’ve selected a majority of the furnishings before choosing colors. Although this is far from my personal taste, you’ve done a great job (and your grandmother’s dinner bell is a nice touch)!
I’m looking forward to some color and dialing in the color temperature of the lighting throughout the house. I had to pick up some economical lighting features in the dining room, kitchen, and bathrooms in a pinch. Still, I would like to swap them out for more colorful and exciting lighting features that complement the furnishings over the next year. The dinner bell is priceless to me. Thank you! 🙏🏼
Nicely done Gavin! I like color and have most walls white, but each room has one accent wall with some kind of color, be it wood, tile or paint. Also a need cabinets in my kitchen because I need more storage for stuff and all I see with open shelves are more things to dust! 😅 But in the end, all that matters is that you and your family enjoy your space. After all, you have to live there, I don't! I hope you and yours make many more happy memories there!

Loved the transformation dude. I’m 72 and live in a 50 year old brick home that I have slowly transformed after my retirement and my husband passed. He collected Mustang convertible ‘Feature’ cars from 1993 and we had lots of fun going to car shows. I loved the office you have with the blue sofa and I might have something you would like. In the’90s Ford came out with some licensed fabric that was red Mustangs on a royal blue background. If I find it in one of my sealed storage containers I’ll send it to you. Absolutely beautiful and modern. I regret my cabinet handles like that. I always get caught on them. Being short has its pitfalls. My pockets seem to become one with my cabinet handles.
Such a great question! That’s part of why the house renovations didn’t turn out the way I had hoped. It was imperative to me that the windows be replaced with vinyl thermal double pane windows, as the house still had/has its original windows. I’ll explain it all in a video soon. Let’s just say things went well over budget, not by my choosing.
When looking at garage door openers, check out the wall mounted ones by Chamberlain, it makes for a much cleaner look on the ceiling and are very quiet.
Agreed! I haven't decided yet on many of the rooms. I won’t add color to a room until I know the furnishings for that particular room. You can paint over white very easily, so until I decide on the furniture that’s going into a room, I won’t decide on accents or themes for a room. Give me some ideas! Thanks for watching!
Amazing….looks great…would you consider painting the aluminum window frames and frame around the sliding doors black….to fit with the contemporary design that you’ve created…what a tribute to your grandparents…..
Great question! I initially planned to install new black vinyl thermal double-pane windows, but due to unforeseen circumstances, it didn't work out as I had hoped. I'll explain more later, but it's important to ensure that whoever is in charge of designing and managing the project accurately quotes and communicates the full scope of the job. This renovation ended up being underquoted by upwards of $40,000, so I had to make some tough decisions just to make the space livable. In addition to workmanship issues I’m still dealing with today.
@@GavinMalm I’ve seen UA-cam videos where people spray paint the aluminum black and it looks great….could be a cheap quick fix until funds are available…good luck to you…..I’ll be watching.
Sorry about your Grandma Lovie 🩵. She must have been a cool lady because the house has such a nice vibe to it. I love how bright and open it is now, with the dark walls in the office as a contrast. I like the wrought iron too. You could maybe powder coat it black or dark bronze in the future. 🤔
I think you did a fine job. Your choices are clean and sleek. I wouldn’t mind them at all. I don’t think the original house had that much character. Some spindled areas, but they weren’t particularly attractive. I like a mostly separate kitchen because I have a lot of appliances and cookware as I am a cook and baker, but your kitchen with the pantry would work well. The only thing I don’t care for, but appreciate your affection for, is the pool table just as you enter the house. Very frat house-ish. As long as it never smells like stale beer, you’re good. Well done. Looking forward to what changes will be made to the wrought iron outside.
You would be surprised how often my girlfriend and I need our own sinks when getting ready, so I'm glad it's double sinks. However, I will eventually swap them for a single vanity with double sinks. I need the counter space.
Ignore the naysayers…layers in decor can create more warmth but layers can come with time as a result of lived experiences. I love what you’ve done. White is a great canvas to start with. I actually like the circular light fixtures and think they help bridge the mid-century vibe to the present. For what it’s worth, my dad made a living from collecting toys…consider putting that Nerf gun under glass in its original packaging 😉. Same with any collectibles. Looking forward to see your upcoming projects.
Unfortunately, there are studs in the wall to support the weight of the glass door to the shower, which doesn't allow for the pocket doors! I'll probably just go back to French doors.
How come you did not get rid of the step down to your living room from the dining room and make it one level only? Pocket doors to the bathroom in the master bedroom would be good.
The front door is at the step-down level, and the house is built on a concrete slab, so raising the floor would have been cost-prohibitive. There are studs in the wall supporting the glass door to the shower, so pocket doors were not an option for the primary bath. I’ll probably just put in French doors again when I upgrade all the doors to the house next year.
It’s ugly and doesn’t suit my taste or the rest of the home. This is my house now, and it’s my turn to make new memories here. Not everything needs to remind me of my grandparents, nor should it. Life moves on, and I want this space to reflect me.
Yes, in the previous video, I mentioned that replacing the windows and removing the bars was important to me. We hit some hangups, and I still have the bars because the original windows have yet to be replaced and are basically worthless in terms of home security. Once they are replaced, the bars will come off at the same time. I can’t stand them!
You lose the wall space wherever the door track runs. The absolute worst! Thanks for stopping by and checking it out. The fireplace is about 90% done now!

Why wouldn't you keep the original fireplace, it looks nice as is and I am sure would remind you of your grandparents the time they had the home.
It’s ugly and doesn’t suit my taste or the rest of the home. This is my house now, and it’s my turn to make new memories here. Not everything needs to remind me of my grandparents, nor should it. Life moves on, and I want this space to reflect me.
OVO 🤙🏾
Thank you! 🙏🏼
Looks like a bachelor pad not a family home in the beginning
I’m a bachelor. Makes sense. 🤙🏼
Are you going to take the bars off the windows? They look tacky
Good choice of not using the "barn doors". They are already years out of style.
You lose the wall space wherever the door track runs. The absolute worst! Thanks for stopping by and checking it out. The fireplace is about 90% done now!
I dont like the renovations nor the decor, but if you're happy, that's all that matters.
A little too trendy and industrial looking for me.
Very nice, would prefer just to be able to hear you, and not have to put with the banal , over loud music please 😊
Ok thanks!
WHY add annoying background music??????????
I like it that way.
Well…it looks like any other house now…no character.
Wow totally masculine bachelor pad vibes guess you “made it your own “ Seems cold and uninviting to me.
