- It’s been a long, challenging journey, but I’m excited to finally share the transformation of my grandma’s house with you. 🏡✨ This house has been a part of my family for generations-it’s where my dad grew up, and where my sister and I spent countless hours with our grandparents and great-grandparents. Though the road to completion hasn’t been easy, I’m proud of the progress we’ve made.
In this video, you’ll see the nearly finished interior of my grandma’s house. The inside is about 85% done, with the exterior and landscaping still to come. Moving from a 600 sqft apartment to this 3,100 sqft home has been an adjustment, so there’s still decorating to be done, but I wanted to share the progress so far. I also point out some of the cherished items passed down to me from my family, including my grandma’s beloved dinner bell.
While my grandma Lovie never got to see the completed house before she passed away in October 2023, she was involved in the planning and saw the design renderings before the project began. This video is being published on October 7th, 2024. Just shy of a year since her passing. It’s been one of the hardest years of my life, and the renovation was filled with its own set of challenges, which I’ll cover in a later video.
For now, join me in taking a look at what we’ve accomplished so far. This house carries so much history and emotion for me, and I’m honored to continue adding to its legacy.
🎥 What you’ll see in this video:
• A nearly completed interior renovation-about 85% finished 🛋️
• Personal items passed down through generations, like my grandma’s dinner bell 🕭
• My reflections on the challenges of this renovation and moving into a larger space 🏠
• A heartfelt tour of the place my family called home for years, now brought into the modern day with care and love 💖
Thank you for being a part of this journey. I hope this video inspires you to treasure your family homes and the memories they hold.

Beautiful kitchen! 😊
Thank you! 🙌🏼
You have created a charm that your gran’ma would love and appreciate all the upgrades💕 Thank you for sharing 🤗
Beautiful! I remember from your last video that your grandma said to make it your own, and I thought that was such a sweet and loving thing to tell you. You've done a beautiful job and I love how you honor your family throughout the house. ❤
Thank you so much! Lovie was one of the greatest supporters in my life. I come from a long legacy of hardworking folks who built runways for their children to prosper, always creating a solid foundation to build upon. I owe so much of my success to them and those values, so honoring them in my home and in how I plan to raise my future children is something I take pretty seriously. I really appreciate your kindness. Thank you for watching! 🙌🏼
The kitchen is Stunning! Love the herringbone tile
Thanks so much! In hindsight I would have loved to have the flooring also done in a herringbone pattern!
Thanks for sharing. I’m 79 years old and love Mid Century Modern also.
I’m glad you like it. I see it as a clinic space. Low ceiling, white squared off rooms not warm at all. But to each their own.
Sometimes, you have to work with what you have. The home was built in 1969, when low ceilings and square rooms were the norm. 🤙🏼
Gavin. Thank you for sharing your home with us!
I find inspiration it in, and it makes me want to do something similar with my childhood home in Alamogordo.
Looks like an awesome front area for entertaining!!!! Kitchen looks so clean too!
Thank you! I like having people over, and I can tell you there has been more life in those rooms in the last year and a half I have lived here than in the previous 49 years! 😂 NOBODY EVER WENT IN THERE!? Let's catch up soon!
Your vision turned out so wonderful. I really like it, thank you so much for sharing it with us.
Forget the pony wall. Really dates the room. And replace the old doors. Looks good!
I absolutely hate the pony wall. It was supposed to be an actual bar top, and this is one of many issues I was left with to figure out after the designer and contractor wouldn’t take ownership of their mistakes and didn't quote the entire scope of work by almost 40k. I was planning on doing doors immediately when moving in but I had a mess on my hands.
I love the cafe series so much! Stunning! I’ll never be able to afford them. I can only hope! The house looks fabulous! Cap off the left sinks pipes and keep a sink on the right, use a stone off cut for one counter top and fill in the middle with a towel roll shelf. Concreti has great top mount sinks. They are beautiful!
I guess I was one of those that was shocked by the removal of all the walls. I see now it was a good idea. Its opened more light into the home 🏠 😮
Well you sure are a lucky guy inheriting this home they don’t build quality homes like these.
Maybe we could see more of the 🏠 home towards the end you seem to give us all you like. But. I am interested in this transformation 🤷♀️. Hello from 🇨🇦👍🇺🇸🙌
What an awesome sets of upgrades. Can't wait to see the garage upgrades too
You and me both! It has so much potential!
and the bonsai tree!!! Perfect
Right?! I picked that up this last weekend from a buddy of mine whose uncle has a bonsai nursery! 🙌🏼
Looks amazing!! Cannot wait to see the finished fireplace!! 🎉
I look forward to seeing some color. It’s a great idea to wait until you’ve selected a majority of the furnishings before choosing colors. Although this is far from my personal taste, you’ve done a great job (and your grandmother’s dinner bell is a nice touch)!
I’m looking forward to some color and dialing in the color temperature of the lighting throughout the house. I had to pick up some economical lighting features in the dining room, kitchen, and bathrooms in a pinch. Still, I would like to swap them out for more colorful and exciting lighting features that complement the furnishings over the next year. The dinner bell is priceless to me. Thank you! 🙏🏼
Its amazing! I am loving the black cabients with the copper trim. Everything came out great so far. Your grandma would be proud ❤
Looking great. Keep on going.
Very nice!
Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to watch my video. 🙌🏼
Lol there’s something indecisive about painting almost every room white
Agreed! I haven't decided yet on many of the rooms. I won’t add color to a room until I know the furnishings for that particular room. You can paint over white very easily, so until I decide on the furniture that’s going into a room, I won’t decide on accents or themes for a room. Give me some ideas! Thanks for watching!
@@GavinMalmSmart move. As a paint color consultant I agree to wait for furnishings. Color harmony is key. Great house. Love your renovations! 😍
Amazing….looks great…would you consider painting the aluminum window frames and frame around the sliding doors black….to fit with the contemporary design that you’ve created…what a tribute to your grandparents…..
Great question! I initially planned to install new black vinyl thermal double-pane windows, but due to unforeseen circumstances, it didn't work out as I had hoped. I'll explain more later, but it's important to ensure that whoever is in charge of designing and managing the project accurately quotes and communicates the full scope of the job. This renovation ended up being underquoted by upwards of $40,000, so I had to make some tough decisions just to make the space livable. In addition to workmanship issues I’m still dealing with today.
@@GavinMalm I’ve seen UA-cam videos where people spray paint the aluminum black and it looks great….could be a cheap quick fix until funds are available…good luck to you…..I’ll be watching.
It came out lovely. The only thing is the recessed lights make any room feel to sterile. Lamps make a room feel more inviting.
I agree; I have the recessed lighting mainly for when I have parties. I plan on using more lamps in the bedrooms and swapping out the dining room, kitchen, and bathroom lights for something more beautiful than the halo rings and pendants for more dynamic and period-correct mid-century styles. Thank you for stopping by and providing some constructive criticism. I appreciate it. 🙌🏼
Glass door on the bathroom would be awesome!!!
I like that idea! A frosted or opaque glass doors might look pretty great! Thank you for the idea! 🤙🏼
Absolutely beautiful and modern. I regret my cabinet handles like that. I always get caught on them. Being short has its pitfalls. My pockets seem to become one with my cabinet handles.
Such a great question! That’s part of why the house renovations didn’t turn out the way I had hoped. It was imperative to me that the windows be replaced with vinyl thermal double pane windows, as the house still had/has its original windows. I’ll explain it all in a video soon. Let’s just say things went well over budget, not by my choosing.
Looks Amazing 🎉 What color paint did u use on the walls? It's a perfect shade of white
Thank you! It’s Sherwin Williams Snowbound SW 7004.
Another great option is Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace OC-65.
Both have high Light Reflectance Values, which helps to bounce light. My painter prefers Sherwin Williams, and I preferred the undertones of the snowbound, so it worked out great. 🤙🏼
I thought you were keeping the built inside in the dining area. The house looks great though.
Great observation! I’ll have a video soon that talks about everything that went wrong. 😑
Have you considered Pocket doors for the Master Bathroom?
Unfortunately, there are studs in the wall to support the weight of the glass door to the shower, which doesn't allow for the pocket doors! I'll probably just go back to French doors.
Very nice, would prefer just to be able to hear you, and not have to put with the banal , over loud music please 😊
Ok thanks!
A little too trendy and industrial looking for me.
