I think they even do that on the big birds today, partly because passengers usually board on the left side.
The 6 has 3 hydraulic pumps. One is an aux pump controlled by a spring loaded on/off switch on the co-pilot's right, the other two pumps are engine driven pumps located on engines #2 and #3 (inboard engines). They are routinely checked for proper operational pressure by starting either engine first. I've flown 861 Tango Alpha more times than I can ever remember when it was with Universal.
