One of the best British sitcoms ever. The chemistry between the four main characters, Rigsby, Miss Jones, Alan and Philip was wonderful, creating a series of hilarious episodes, I'll never get tired of watching. So many memorable moments in this great series.
Leonard Rossiter was also a very kindly man who had a great passion for philatily. Near to where he lived was a childrens' home and he would go there and teach young kids the joy of stamp collecting. One of those kids is now an internationally recognised authority on the subject.
No reaction channel for some unknown has ever done a reaction to till death do us part which is considered by many to be best British comedy of all time. A bit of trivia Till death us do part was going to be aired in America,But the studio bosses decided the content was way to strong for American audience so they did there own version of the show. The show was called all in the family and Alf Garnett was replaced by Al Bundy
George Sewell played the long suffering boss of the two detectives played by Jasper Carrot and Robert Powell in the comedy series The Detectives. He showed his great comedy acting skills in that series, there were some really funny episodes, but it doesn't seem to get much of a mention these days!
Did you know that young student guy with long hair was Kate Beckinsale dad? He died aged 31when she was only 6. He was in a few decent comedy series, I think he's someone we missed the best of unfortunately.
I think what it is about Rising Damp is that it's very dialogue heavy between the characters , and they talk quite quickly so it's one brilliant line after another.
Interesting fact - Richard Beckinsale, who plays Alan, is the father of Hollywood actress Kate Beckinsale. (Underworld Movies) Unfortunately, he died very, very young. Around this age, I believe. PS Frances De La Tourre, who plays Ruth, also played Madamw Maxine in Harry Potter 4.
It's cool I get to see these shows again because I barely remember them, most are before my time but I did see most of them when they repeated them in the 80s & 90s and seeing an Americans reaction to them is a fun way to watch them again
Harvest Festivals !. PMSL, my dad said that once making reference to Old Mrs Marriotts knickers on the line next door , we were fixing a gate in the shed. I asked him, " harvest festivals?", he said, they were pants made to have everything safely gathered in!. It became relevant in time. Much love from the UK X
I remember Leonard in the Cinzano adverts with Joan Collins. He was also in Kubrick's 2001 Space Odyssey. Recommend again his turn in an episode of Steptoe and Son "The Desperate Hours" as an escaped prisoner. Classic. I'm sure others have mentioned Richard Beckinsale is the father of Hollywood actress Kate Beckinsale best known for the Underworld films. His most well known role was as Lenny Godber in Porridge with Ronnie Barker. He died of a heart attack in 1979 at the age of just 32. Leonard Rossiter passed in 1984. George Sewell was a gangster in the 1971 classic Get Carter with Michael Caine.
@@PassportToPimlico The writers, Galton and Simpson, said that Corbett definitely knew he had to raise his game with Rossiter as a guest star. Rossiter had also appeared earlier in the series as a Welsh conman who sold the Steptoes a load of lead, which turned out to have come off their own roof.

George Sewell, specialised as an actor in police, crime or spy films and TV programmes. Biggest series I think was ITV's Special Branch - rarely repeated in recent years. He managed to play cops and villians equally well ( not a cop that was a villian though - the Line of Duty stuff seems a recent invention ). Think he did a little bit of comedy appearences mainly sending the genre up as a guest on comedians shows.

Top class comedy sit com. Writing and comedy timing of the leading actors and actress is outstanding. The fall and rise of Reginald Perrin comedy also starring Leonard rossiter is fantastic as well.
I love Rising Damp so much, l could never really get into The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin. It did however demonstrate Leonard's versatile acting skills, I'll always remember him as Rigsby though!
the Box of Milk Tray was a play on the Milk Tray advert where a mysterious man duos a James bond act to leave a box of chocolates for the lady of his dreams.
The sad thing is, what Rigsby says to the police officer about the Intruder having a pat on the head, told not to be a naughty boy and three doctors saying he had trouble with potty training in early infancy is about right!
Wonderfully written and acted sitcom. I feel it’s been neglected by the British broadcasting of late so it’s great to see them being reacted to. People may argue it’s comedy of it’s time and would be considered racist now but it’s Rigsby’s narrow mindedness we’re laughing at not Richard and that’s what the writers did so wonderfully.
Sorry to nit-pick, but it was writer not writers. These were the days when they didn't need a football team of writers to knock out 30 minutes of comedy.
Richard Beckinsale (Alan) was a great actor and died tragically young. His daughter Kate Beckinsale is also good actor and has appeared in many Hollywood films.

Rising Damp 1980 Film, Based on the British situation comedy Rising Damp, which aired on ITV from 1974 to 1978. Stingy landlord Rigsby (Leonard Rossiter) manages to scam his lodgers, arts student John Cooper(Christopher Strauli) and medical student Philip (Don Warrington) making both pay for a room they must share. Rigsby's favourite lodger, Miss Jones (Frances de la Tour) flirts with Philip much to Rigsby's annoyance and when new upper crust lodger Seymour (Denholm Elliott) arrives she falls completely under his spell. It seems Rigsby's love for her will forever be unrequited.
You wasn't the only one who had an idea that he was the prowler, he reminded me of an episode of Only Fools & Horses where Del Boy, Rodney & uncle Albert go to the country to go fishing, they are warned by the police that a escaped convict is on the loose, when they reach their destination a similar scenario happens when a man pretending to be a policeman shows up but he is actually the convict who is a lunatic with an axe, by the end Del Boy ends up turning the situation around by playing an imaginery game of pool with the con for money
It’s funny I honestly thought Rising Damp would be a little too niche and old for a modern American sensibility but I guess quality really does endure.
