It was a big deal when Leonard Rossiter died in 1984, he was only 57. And Richard Beckinsale died in 1979 only 31. In those few years we lost the cream of British comedy, they were dropping like flies…. Peter Sellers, Eric Morecambe, Tommy Cooper, Gary Holton, Harry H Corbett, Wilfred Brambell, Peter Butterworth, Hattie Jacques.
It was like every time we turned the News on, another superstar had snuffed it. ☹️
Didn't realise it was that long ago.He was starring in Trippers Day at the time I believe.
Leonard Rossiter (Rigsby) was actually a very versatile, successful theatre/stage actor, he actually died whilst getting ready to go on stage in 1984.
Leonard Rossiter and Frances de Ia Tour did not see eye to eye on politics. They were at oposite ends of the spectrum. In rehersal's they rehersed their parts with a large space between them. On the day of recording an episode on set with a pre run through of the show to set the camera angles. If Frances sat on the couch Leonard would stand behind her. The only time the pair of them sat or stood close together was for the filming of the actual episode. Rising Damp was recorded before a live audience and the 4 of them were so good they could record the whole episode in 1 filming. Leonard and Frances from the final runthrough to the actual filming were alway's adding details to their performance. Don Warrington said, " Working with Leonard, Frances and Richard I soon learnt I had to up my game. Cheers, Chris Perry.
Eric Chappell had to write more dialogue because of the timing between the three was so quick and slick. As the series goes on you see how Rigsby is slightly in awe of Philip...he's everything Rigsby wants to be.
Incredible actors. They'd rehearse an episode throughout the week, then record in front of a live audience on the Friday evening
Bit of trivia- The actors who play Alan and Philip actually lived together while making the program. They got kicked out of the first place they lived in for partying.
Another true British classic, our golden period without doubt and I do not believe we will ever get near such quality again. Each of the actors learned from previous previous past masters. Richard Beckinsale, father of Kate, was taken far too early he had a great career a head of him, but what we did get was classic. Damn we were spoiled back then and in a way it is nice we are all a little older and can really appreciated what we had, Its like a great meal that you can still taste hours later knowing at the same time your never likely going to eat like that again.
This is so funny every time I'm in Blackpool I always seem to rent a room in a hotel with a character like Mr Rigsby it's hilarious 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What fascinates me about watching these old shows with you is what you laugh hardest at (always a joy!), and what seems to pass you by. I know humo(u)r is subjective, but for me the killer line of this episode belongs to Miss Jones: “Mr Rigsby, will you kindly extinguish your stick!” Such a beautiful double entendre / euphemism for his ardour. Love sharing your enjoyment with these. For UK people of my age, this is part of our national psyche.

I absolutely love that you get the humor, the jokes, all being risky in this day and age, it is all part of British History and you can not take that away from us.
Love your comedy reactions, British comedy from the 70s 80s and 90s is pure gold.
Watch out for Rigsby trying to hypnotise his cat, Vienna. Hence the line - Your eyelids are heavy, your paws are like lead!
What about the scene where he says Vienna the cat will land on her feet if he drops her?that was hilarious.
The casting of this show was perfection
Try watching the Cinzano ads (compilation) with Leonard Rossiter and Joan Collins. Where he plays an upmarket version of Rigsby in a series of very funny ads in the late 70s.

I came for the antidote to life's woes of watching EB laugh, and I wasn't disappointed!
This was my favourite sitcom back in the seventies when I was a young teenager, I still love it now.
EB - slowly but surely you’re restoring my faith in Americans. Great video.
It's great reliving this with someone who has never seen it before. I don't why this comedy didn't cross the pond at the time it was out. I grew up on this stuff, as well as loads of US TV like Mash and Cheers. Your laugh just adds to the comedy. I try and introduce my daughter (21). to this sort of thing, but for some reason it doesn't translate to a younger audience.
I grew up in the 80s and 90s and saw reruns of this (as did some of my friends) and I thought it was funny.
I’m not sure if general US audiences would’ve warmed to it much in the 70s. John Wayne famously didn’t get “it ain’t half hot mum”. And the US TV companies might have asked why on earth they’d broadcast British comedies when they could make their own. US television remade several British comedies. Off of the top of my head:
All in the family = Till death do us part
3’s Company = Man about the house
You again = Home to roost
This reminds me of my mum she loved this, along with steptoe and son. I have to admit I was never a fan of rising damp until I was a bit older and watched it again and thought it was hilarious 😂

Rising Damp had a fantastic 4 person dynamic with Rigsby, Alan, Philip & Ruth. Of course it was Rigsby, the pivotal character who ALWAYS came off worst at the end of each episode. And it was bloody funny too
i think richard wore a wig as his hair was short as he was filming porridge at the time as well
The actor who plays Philip is still acting you should see him in Death in Paradise a BBC 1 series. It's a lovely escape to a beautiful Island
It’s not just the clever writing, it’s how Rossiter carries it off. He’s brilliant. He’s the key to the sitcom.
At 12:17 Rigsby mentions a scenario with “some bird in a nightie”. This is a clever reference to a series of tv alcoholic drink commercials Leonard Rossiter did around that time with Joan Collins. Do a search on YT.
He was such a talent on screen. From what I've seen in documentaries very unassuming off screen. I forgot just how brilliant this show was.
He played the part perfectly and was in a league of his own to a degree.
I hate to do this but this series was made in 1974 and the Cinzano ads started in 1978.

You should try Porridge, a British comedy about prison life made in the 70's and 80's, Alan from Rising damp is in it, along with Ronnie Barker, you will absolutely love it.

Definitely, after Rising Damp, go to Porridge from the Pilot episode and on to episode 1. Probably the best Brit comedy ever. And even more characters than in Rising Damp.

Has anyone mentioned that Kate Beckinsale is Richard's ("Alan's") daughter? Richard died aged just 31. For another memorable classic he was in you might try "Porridge" (which starred Ronnie Baker)

There were some real gems on the TV in these years. This show was just so well done, I can remember people glued to the screen for rerun's in the 90s who'd never seen it, a real British sitcom masterclass.

Jaysus Dude, I am in hysterics just watching you enjoy and laugh at this. It really makes my day. Lord only knows whats gonna happen when you get into stuff like 'Fawlty Towers' and Only Fools and Horses' or even 'One foot in the Grave' They are gonna have to send in the medics. Love that laugh. wiki has Ep3 as "A Night Out" not this one. I notice Rigsby mentions another tennant, Spooner, in this one. "A Night out" features Spooner. But this is the "love wood "episode so it's all good :)
Spooner is a wrestler.

I didn't get where I am today watching 1970's sitcoms.
Very underrated show and really turned the world of typical British small business on its head. Surprisingly a forecast of the future too with the sales of Grot do so well looking at the quality of much of the junk we now buy.

Leonard Rossiter, who played Rigby was the British veteran squash champion. He made fabulous stuff after this.
If you want an alternative look at the characters - in different ways, Ruth and Alan are both 'racist' in more benign ways than Rigsby. Alan sees him as an 'exotic' friend and Ruth sees him as an 'exotic lover'. Both because he is black, really :)
Philip knows all that, of course, and uses it to his advantage lol So he's not being abused in any way.
To be fair, part of the reason Alan sees him is exotic is the stuff Phillip tells him. I imagine Phillip was the first black person Alan ever met and he was just hopelessly naive and ignorant, but at least he didn’t hold to any of the negative stereotypes Rigsby did.

I do not think it is wrong to like a person because they're "exotic " nothing wrong with it at all. Tbh exotic is subjective, my partner is from the Philippines and she sees me as "exotic" yet I am white, exotic basically means different. Quoting Google... (exotic) originating in or characteristic of a distant foreign country.

Frances De La Tour was not that old in this , I presume her character is set a little older. As an actress she had already done Shakespeare (TV I think and Theatre), but the comedy stalwart was Richard Beckinsale, mid 20s playing a slightly younger person, had already been in the ITV comedy series 'The Lovers'

The series was shot in studios in Leeds. Although the setting is not specific, just somewhere in the north of England, but the bike girl, Maureen, had the authentic Yorkshire accent. All three of the leading men have subtley different accents. Rigsby comes from Liverpool, Alan comes from the Midlands and Phillip aka Don Warrington when he came to Britain was brought up in Newcastle so he may have had a geordie accent but obviously that wouldn’t sound right for the part.

My favourite comedy series. I notice you keep referring to the writers as "they". It was entirely written by one man, Eric Chappell, who based the series on his stage play. He wrote many other tv comedy series, all of which are excellent and worth looking up, although RD will always be my pick of the bunch. Glad you like it.
Well said. It's always surprised me that Eric Chappell doesn't seem to be praised as much as other comedy writers. Rising Damp was a masterpiece and and some of his other sitcoms eg Only When I Laugh, Duty Free, Home to Roost, were excellent too. Although Leonard Rossiter and Richard Beckinsale are sadly long gone, Eric Chappell is happily still with us at the age of 88.

Probably because most US comedy shows are written by teams... Back in the day most UK shows like this were written by one writer but the fashion has moved towards 2 writers in the UK over the last decade or so.

Ruth was in a bit of a quandary when asked to go to the wrestling. She's far too polite to outright refuse, (especially since Rigsby has just done a few minor chores for her), but she really doesn't want to go and is trying to think up excuses for why she can't possibly join him. Having been told she's not going, Rigsby is a little crest-fallen, but is civil enough about it to console himself with a, 'better luck next time', frame of mind.
The expediency of them trying to woo the women shows just how desperate they are. That Rigsby would actually believe the nonsense about the, 'love wood', and that Philip actually had a plained example to hand that he willingly gave to him, along with him actually trying to lure Ruth with it, all adds to the comic ridiculousness of it all. Philip once again makes a complete fool of Rigsby, and Alan got stuck somewhere in the middle.

@The Eclectic Beard , Alan actor Richard Beckinsale who plays Alan shared a cell with Ronnie Barker in the prison comedy Porridge . Sadly Richard died at a very young age of 32 , he has 2 daughters who became actresses samantha who is a tv actress and the other is famous Kate Beckinsale who's starred in dozens of hollywood blockbuster movies including Pearl Harbor , Van Helsing , Serendipity , Underworld , the avaitor and many more .
I didn't really think i liked this when i was younger, But watching it with you laughing has made me realize i missed out on a good show.

The humour that was wrote in by one writer as apposed to a lot of the stateside shows, with have boardrooms full of teams of writers.
Hello Alan. Rigsby is of a generation that, unless wealthy, went to a school that taught not much more than pride in the empire. They left for work, probably manual, aged fourteen. The students poke fun at him, but they also understand the world had changed during the sixties. This left an age divide and with it an educational and social mobility divide in society that this uses to comic effect.
More than that it is very funny.
That's the mainstay of the British sitcom. One character who's always trying to be better and fails every time. You just don't get that dynamic in American sitcoms

Once you've watched the entire 4 series [and maybe even the movie] checkout ''Rising Damp TV Series Documentary.'' Very interesting with some surprising nuggets of behind the scenes info. Eg. Richard Beckinsale was filming this and 'Porridge' pretty much back to back, so had to wear a wig for 'RD.' He hated it and would rip it off after filming every episode.

The fact its early to mid 70's era, and the comedy is still fresh and not so dated speaks volumes gor the writing.

This was Eric Chappell's masterpiece. Though he produced another good one with Duty Free (co-written).

I consider myself honoured to have seen Richard Beckinsale live in the London West End play, No Sex Please, We're British. He did though leave us with a legacy, his gorgeous actress daughters Kate and Samantha.
Whenever I now see Don Warrington as the Chief of Police in Murder in Paradise, I always to myself mentally refer to him as that bloke from Rising Damp.

Great reaction. It's great to see someone else discovering and enjoying one of your own person favourites. By the way, I think this is Episode 4. Episode 3 is 'A Night Out'.
I think the first episode was a pilot episode because IMDB shows S1 EP0, 1, 2, 3 etc. which may be behind the confusion. Certainly missing an episode though, I thought it was odd they mentioned Spooner and we've not seen him.
The love tree wood is so phallic.
"I shouldn't think so, it came off the wardrobe" I still quote that to this day when something is dodgy :D African love wood haha, and the way he waves it with a limp wrist around the door :D
