  • What is a fly plaid? When is it worn? In this video, USA Kilts explains what a fly plaid is, how it's worn and when you should wear it.
    Transcript:
    A fly plaid is a 40 to 50 inch square of tartan fabric that matches your kilt. It is fringed around the edges and has a box pleat sewn in one corner. It is worn through the epaulet of the jacket and pulled down to the bottom of the pectoral muscle in front and hangs down to mid calf in the back. It is only worn when you are dressed formally, you do not have to wear it to dress formally. If you do choose to wear a fly plaid, it will only be worn for formal circumstances.

    Traditional Fly Plaids do not come with a Box Pleat sewn on any corner, you would do better learning how to undertake this task by the original/traditional method.

    So is the brooch not used to secure the fly plaid in place?

      The epaulets on the jacket do that, the brooch basically weighs it down and counterbalances the longer bit of fabric that hangs down the back. Sometimes a safety pin is used to secure the plaid to the jacket.

    Great, informative video(s) thank you for that.But i have two Questions. 1) I bought a (modern) kilt made from black watch tartan. Now i want a fly plaid, but i cant find the exact same colorcombination. Can i wear a plaid who has not the exact same colorsheme?
    2) What kind of variations of plaids (for men) do exist? If there are more than one what should i wear?
    thank you

      MrHiller - To answer your questions:
      1) I wouldn't. If you bought your kilt from a reputable supplier, they'll know what mill and what weight of cloth your kilt was and would be able to provide the Fly Plaid in the same cloth. If you can't get that info or buy a fly plaid in the material that matches, I PERSONALLY would forego wearing the Fly Plaid altogether. Would others wear it even if the colors were 'off' from the kilt? Probably. Would it look good? Probably not.
      2) Typically, if you're wearing your kilt formally, you'd wear a Fly Plaid. There is also a Pipers Plaid which meant for pipers and a Drummers Plaid (aka - Belted Plaid) which is meant for drummers. There's also a Day Plaid, which is just a length of cloth folded up and wrapped around the torso (used as a blanket on picnics, etc).

      Thank you for answering so fast. Ok, no fly Plaid i guess. It was my first kilt and i took a cheep (60 Euro~ 80 $)one to "see how it feels". And i like it a lot, so i ask the supplier for the Fly Plaid, and he told me that people buy them online much cheaper so he doen not have them in his program. Grandma is turning 90 next saturday, i would have bin the most formally dressed familymember. Thank you again for answering my Questions, please keep on making videos.

      The Fly Plaid should always match the kilt that you're wearing. When someone buys a kilt from us, we always ask if they want a matching fly plaid b/c it's always best to match the cloth using the same bolt of fabric. Matching a tartan after the fact can prove difficult. I'd suggest going back to the place you bought the kilt and asking them for a matching plaid. :-)
      There are several types of plaids. The Fly Plaid (shown in our video), the Pipers Plaid and the Drummers (aka Belted) Plaid (both for pipe bands almost exclusively) and the Day Plaid (a large blanket just wrapped around the torso of the wearer... not very common).

      I would advise against it. Has it been DONE? Yes. Has it been done WELL? No. :-)

    nice vid TY , what is the brooch like piece ?
    what do the Scots call the fly plaid ( the word " plaid " isn"t used in Scotland ) ?

    • @USAKiltsOfficial
      @USAKiltsOfficial  8 років тому

      The brooch is a Plaid Brooch.
      The Scots call it a Fly Plaid as well (the word "Plaid" in this instance is pronounced "Plade" with a long A sound).

      TY , do Americans use the word " plaid " or " tartan " ?

    • @USAKiltsOfficial
      @USAKiltsOfficial  8 років тому +1

      Americans use the word "Plaid" (plad with a short A sound) incorrectly. Plaid generally means "Pleated" where americans use it to mean anything with a tartan check on it.
      A Tartan is the pattern design of matching warp and weft lines.

      do Americans ever use the word " tartan " ?

      Yes, the ones who are knowledgeable on clans and kilts generally do correctly use the word Tartan. Frankly, I would guesstimate that 95% + of our customers use the word Tartan when speaking with USA Kilts staff and do NOT use the word "plaid" ("plad" with short a).
