If you show your non anime fan friends the 89 dub they would look at Akira as a joke. I have no issues with the old dub but it wa a product of it's time. There's a reason why they needed the 2001 dub. And there's a reason why hulu has the 2001 version of the English dub.
Your mention of Cowboy Bebop when describing the Pioneer dub of Akira is especially perfect since the union that did the dub also helped dub Bebop. Animaze!!
I always tell people both dubs are awesome, though I have a slight preference for the Streamline dub. What I find really interesting is that by watching both dubs, and the sub as well, you pick up on different little aspects of the story and start to paint a more complete picture of the film's themes, undertones, and overtones.
Thanks for doing this comparison! I'll preface this by saying that although the Pioneer dub is widely acknowledged to be a better translation of the dialogue from Japanese to English, I prefer the original Streamline dub. The reason for this is because I watched Akira in an art museum theater in the fall of 1989 when I was a senior in high school. Groundbreaking work. The anime I watched when I was younger than that was Robotech and Battle of the Planets. Those were good, Akira was leaps and bounds better. In the 90s, I would occasionally rent the VHS. I never bought it as the cost was astronomical then. I heard the Pioneer dub, preferred the Streamline one, but that wasn't available after 2001. I finally bought my own copy of the Blu-ray since both dubs were included. These days, I prefer to watch subbed anime, the only exceptions being Akira and the shows I mentioned above. In the case of those shows, since they were Americanized versions, the English is the best choice for me. Were I to watch the Japanese shows that were modified to create the Americanized shows, I'd watch a subbed version now.
I grew up with the 01’ voice actors in everything. And seeing clips of the 89’ dub it looked goofy. But going back and watching the full film with the research I have a huge appreciation for it now. For something that year it’s beyond great. Especially if you compare it to other anime dubs from the same time. Thanks for watching!
I actually remembered seeing the Pioneer dub when it aired on Toonami, though I skipped it during its premiere back in 2013 and now I watched fully during its rerun in 2014. Not only that, but I also live tweeted the film but didn't mention the thought of me almost getting sick of the disgusting transformation at the end.
89 version was a product of its time, it sounds like a dbz abridged type parody. I understand nostalgia freaks liking the 89 version but they cross the line when they try and say the 89 dub is objectively better.
Hey thanks for watching. I started off thinking it was a joke too. But by the end I have a huge respect for it. I do still favorite the Pioneer dub. But I am biased towards those actors

I grew up on the old dub, because I'm old. I got the films as it released. But nowadays I can't watch any dub. I only watch the Japanese version. The best.
The newer dub was great but my heart belongs to the original dub
I grew up with the newer dub. But the older dub was so good for being something from the 80s! It still holds up super well.

I do remember that the LA voice actors are in a union. Went to a recent panel and the Texas actors aren’t.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing this information!
Hey thanks for watching! I love going back and looking at all the promo stuff they made for each release

I agree. I think with such a unique movie, each dub presents a different experience. And both hold up really well.

The original English dub is much better, don’t like the new one, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.
Hey thanks for watching! I was watching the dub of Wolf’s Rain when I first saw Akira’s Pioneer dub. But for 89’ that dub still holds up

You felt sick for watching? I would avoid early 90s anime ovas. They’re pretty graphic as they’re only meant for video vhs release
Wait there's a new dub??
One from 2001 with the LA cast. :)
