I am a bassist and I sing. This is doable, because rhythm is not really syncopated. And even syncopated rhythms can be done. Playing tuplets and singing triplets or vice versa is much harder. However. The hard bit here is keeping the slapping at this speed reliably and in sync with the drummer for so long. I heard Mark say that this is the hardest tune to play live, because it’s so relentless. I can not keep my slapping hand relaxed enough for so long without getting inaccurate in tempo and sound. Mark is a bass superpower that can not be rivaled.
Read an interview with him in a drum mag just after he got the gig. The guy has an ego the size of a bus. Said he was just waiting on the call from Prince. That never happened. Also for me he over plays everything. All those fast fills ruin the groove and he is really just showing off. Mark loves him tho.
Level 42...I'll never forget em! Mark King inspired to learn the bass guitar. First album I ever bought was "pursuit of accidents"..I was 10. Still think their best ever was .."the early tapes"...sandstorm, 88 and Mr Pink. Still mostly cherish their instumental origins. Starchild and Love Games still takes me back.. The lineup that my memory and youth idolizes was the original; Mark King, Mike Lindup, Phil Gould, and Boon Gould.
Mark King is such a SAVAGE! This bass line alone is a fkkn chore, a serious chore. But to play it AND sing the song at the same time....I tip my hat to the legend. 💪💪💪
The average person doesn't realise how hard it is to sound even a little bit good let alone this good in a tiny no frills venue like this one - especially vocals - what a legend! very good drummer too! wow!
I heard this song in the couple of the soviet films. Many years I tried to find these magnetic sounds and now I found it. I'm so happy today. Great music!
remember back when music used to be fun to listen to? be it rock, rap, pop or whatever...nowadays everybody's always trying to impress you with how 'heavy', 'hardcore' or 'gangsta' they are that none of what produce seems enjoyable. shame really, but that's why i still dig the old stuff and always will...all the joy's gone from music nowadays.
Martin Platt:... must've been fantastic! Hope you loved it! I saw them at Wembley Arena in early '87, the night they recorded the live at Wembley vid, absolutely awesome. Peace.
You know, I am 27 (American) and unfortunately was born the last 6 months of 1989, so I didn't get to experience the great discoveries of each son that came out on MTV. Thankfully my mom and dad kept it rolling on the radio and Pop Up Video VH1.. This music really never gets old and glad I have a big love for this decade.
I like this version. True live. Small club, and Pete slaying the drums. Of course King is 🤴🏻 It’s a different spirit from the original one. Sweet!👏🏻🙌🏻🤜🏻🤛🏻
Amazing sound quality and mix. Tight as a gnat's chuff. Nice to hear that Mark's bass can stand up on its own without the backing track on this song :)
¡ Fantasticos ! Uno de mis grupos favoritos desde que nació a mediadosde los 80's. Aún conservo su LP en vinilo. Gracias por su música, saludos desde México, Dios los bendiga.
magic of the 80's is not just the voice, it's everything, the music, melody, lyrics!
The drummer is awesome
Peter Ray "BIGGIN" the name of drummer...
Mark is a beast on bass!! He plays that riff at that same tempo non-stop throughout the whole song!! That is NOT easy!!
you can’t imagine how difficult it is to sing AND play a moving syncopated bass line ... he makes it look so easy - incredible!
Dude! He is insane! How is this even humanly possible?!?!
Playing bass, singing and chewing gum at the same time, dude is a fucking octopus
Mark seems to "grab" the strings. I know one can't "strum" a bass, but how he does that is beyond me.

Always loved that bass line! Some credit for this performance must go to the drummer. Great job.

INCREDIBLE since the 80s!
Love that lit up fret board on Mark King's bass!
For decades, I thought the bass on this song was a sequencer. Then along came UA-cam and I was able to see them playing live. Amazing.
They were are ahead of this time. I would hitch hike from Basildon to Southend in the snow to watch them live. Before they became legends.
Zero 6? Those were the days.
gotta love that funky bass!
