Your opinion, I have a colony in a screened bottom board. The slide in board was not any good so I placed a sheet of plywood under the screened bottom board and taped the back up. Well the girls have chewed a hole in the tape and a lot of bees are going in and out, some with pollen. Bees are using front and back. What do I do

I would go ahead and remove the plywood. It's plenty warm now that they shouldn't need the insert. Lots of beekeepers don't cover them all winter, so you should be good!

I’m an NC beekeeper. Is it still to early or can I do a walk away split when I start seeing drones between the frames (or in the comb) like you were pointing out?

I would wait a bit longer. Once drones hatch, it still takes them 2 weeks to be mature enough to mate. So, I would wait 2 weeks after you see drones hatching out.
