Loading a Challenging Pieced Backing! Quilting Feathers!

  • Topics will include:
    - discussion of which way to load the quilt (horizontal or vertical, and why)
    - loading a backing that is not fully squared up
    - quilting around 3-dimensional elements, in this case eyelet lace
    - using my All-Over Feather quilting design
    This is a fairly large quilt, so I won't finish it entirely during the show. My intention is to talk a little about the loading process as I do it, and then to have less talking than usual, and more head-down quilting.

    I know on your Bernina you use regular domestic machine needles. What is your favorite size? Why? Do you have a preference of needle type? Regular, Titanium, Chrome? If you have a client that is a purist and wants you to quilt with all cotton batting and cotton thread would you do it? Why? Why not? If a quilt is pressed with all seams opened would you tend to be a little heavier with the quilting of the seams so they won't tend to pull out? Why? Why not? When doing an all-over free hand design do you if using a feather tend to use the seams as a spine to keep yourself straight? Do you study the back of the quilt top before loading to see if thick seams were swirled? I noticed today you knew when you were coming to a thick, bulky seam you slowed down. I know that comes with experience also.
    I do love watching your live and unscripted. This morning I felt like after watching you and my eyes tracking your movements I could probably try this feather design. Unreasonable but sure seems like it.
    I live in a warm climate (Las Vegas, NV.) and tend to prefer cotton batting for it's lightness and breathability. I generally purchase batting packaged by size. Would I do better purchasing a full roll? If someone wants me to do quilting for them and they don't want all cotton and have a preference should I ask them to provide their own batting?
    I find the background music very relaxing. Do you listen to it when you are quilting?

      That looks like a book’s worth of answers😁 I’ll do a few quick and easy ones: I like 90/14 needles as they’re fairly all-purpose and work across most quilts and I like Universal or Topstitch for the same reason.
      Each quilter has to make their own decision about what they’re willing and able to do for clients in terms of different battings. To me, as long as it’s good quality, I’ll quilt with anything, my machine doesn’t care. Likewise buying in rolls; it’s definitely less expensive per yard but requires storage space and up front cost, so only you can decide that.
      For the bulky seams, I can see and feel them as I’m quilting.

    I’m watching replay and just wanted to compliment Mr. Producer for the excellent camera set up. It is super helpful to be able to get close up and full view of Susan stitching at the same time. I am curious as to why you (Susan) chose to stop the pattern vertically where you did? On screen it looks like you have several more inches available within your machine and frame reach. Ah, I see now that you came back across from the the direction. Wish the stitching was more visible so we could see how the pattern blended with the previous row above.

      @beverlypearce4191 I got an Amara 20 with a studio 3 frame 10ft.
      I only have 8 foot but the this frame will go down to 8 ft.
      I was nervous spending so much money but, it was a real good deal and after I purchased it I felt that longing go away. So I know i made the right choice.

    Hi Susan, I've watched your loading process over and over on various videos you have, and it always makes so much sense. I recently purchased the red snappers, and have trouble snapping the snappers onto the backing edges straight. I know you use the clamps at the ends of the leaders to keep them from moving while you line up the backing edges on your rails, but what do you use as a guide to line up the backing ? You make it look so easy. Am I making sense--even though I am using the selvedge edge and know it is straight, there is no way for me to know I am securing the snappers on straight.

      I use the straight edge of the backing and the hem on the leader as my guide.

      @StitchedBySusan  18 днів тому +1

      Sue…looks like I’ve recorded it but not yet released it🤦🏻‍♀️ Short answer is, it’s the recessed screw right beside the bobbin winder. Longer answer…I’ll get that video finished 👍🏻

      @@StitchedBySusan Thank you so much! I'd like to make it just a tad bit fuller than what my dealer set it to when they installed. Looking forward to the video. SO much better when you can do some of these things yourself!
      Also, I learned to wrap the thread around the bobbin tension guide twice from watching your videos. That was really helpful! My bobbin tension is much better now.
      I'm also wondering if you do anything special when you wrap the thread around the bobbin before turning on the bobbin winder. I've seen a couple of different techniques and wonder what you do.
