This is my first time seeing your UA-cam page. I just have to point out that I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s and I knew this song. Not only was the song fantastically so well rearranged, and not only did this 70 year old man deliver the goods better than 1967, but I saw how it affected your heart! Yes that is the purpose of music, but also the purpose of music is to reveal the heart. Yours was shown in this and I can’t help but feel that God is doing something in you that’s been lost! Your ability to feel Gods touch through such a musical piece and (peace) shows that you are ready to return to a place of restoration! Thanks for being you, and yes I will subscribe to this channel!
Reading this made me cry 😢😭 I love Procol Harem this song is absolutely beautiful and timeless this is also my first time on this channel thank you for being sensitive God bless you 🙏❤

Arranged by the singer and composer, Gary Brooker. Listen on UA-cam to "Something Magic" and "Grand Hotel" to hear other examples of his orchestrations, also the concert at Edmonton in 1972.
It's the best rendition of this song. Gary took care of his voice, and it achieved a timbre in older age that his twentysomething voice just couldn't have. He was 61 here. Combine that with the full orchestral backing and you get this masterpiece that hopefully will be archived somewhere for many future generations to see and hear.
This is absolutely the finest performance of this masterpiece that has ever been done by Procol Harum. Everything came together perfectly. Gary Brooker was 22 in 1967 when Procol Harum released this masterpiece, and Gary had a good voice then. At 61 in this video, Gary has a great voice. His voice is now silenced, but he will never be forgotten as long as this masterpiece is played and listened to.
James, I am 74 and I have had anxiety and depression for 6 years now and have had a lot of loss in my life recently, going on these music reaction sites helps me take my mind off of things for a little while and provides me some company. I have loved this Procol Harum song since it came out in 1967 and that church organ sound is what makes the song. It sends chills down my spine everytime I hear it. I'm 75 and first heard the original in 1967. I used to suffer from depression too but learned how to control it. The look of calm on your face as you listened was beautiful!!!
I'm glad to see Music helps you cope with depression and in particular this Wonderful, Gorgeous interpretation of A Whiter Shade Of Pale by Procol Harum with the Denmark Symphony Orchestra has such a positive effect on you. That performance is for the ages!! I'm a professional musician since an early age and remember being touched by this song but this Live performance IMHO takes "MUSIC" to another level. The song, Gary Brooker's voice, the accompaniment by such a wonderful Symphony Orchestra, the Choir, the band, the melody played by the organ, the final mix by the recording engineers and Producer(s). It elevates your spirit, it make me think, that we humans are also capable of creating beautiful things that touch your heart and soul. There's a video that I would recommend you to watch and that is of "Luciano Pavorotti with James Brown" singing together "It's a Man's Man's Man's World"
When I was 6, My Favourite Big Brother died when He was 17. Being a silly teenage boy, He snuck out of the house to go to His Friend's house. He played with a gun the police said would never fire, it got Him in the head. He was a protective Big Brother and We were Very Close. One night He was saying "Goodnight!" to Me. The next morning, My waking up is burned into My Memory. I walked into the lounge room and saw everyone crying. So I asked "What is everyone crying about?" They told Me, and My World Fell Apart! I was one of the saddest little girls you ever saw. I'm a singer Myself, but there's one Beatles song I can't sing. "Yesterday" from what I've learned Paul McCartney wrote it while He was grieving for His Mum. I recently watched Him perform "Yesterday" live, and noticed Him crying while He sang. What a professional singing through His tears. I can't do that. Yesterday I had My Favourite Big Brother, the next day He was gone. I'm 43 now but I still have an empty place in My heart for Him.
R.I.P. G.Brooker ... du fehlst in dieser Welt.
So true no one really writes classic songs anymore, the sixties was such a rich vein of creativity, I do wonder sometimes it might be due to them all being off their faces on LSD. Some amazing songs written and performed in that era that are hard to ever touch, I always feel like I am an old soul as I adore this era of music, definitely born in the wrong era 70's baby me 🍼👶
Thankfully technology has allowed younger generations to experience the music from our generation. And many of them are very receptive to it. They may think that we're uncool but they know the music we grew up on was the coolest of all.
The original is a just such an iconic classic. This live version with a full symphony orchestra is extraordinary. Oh to be there in the crowd to experience this masterpiece.
Always been a favourite of mine, this is the best version by far IMO. Total world class quality performance by all, music doesn’t get any better than this.
@@chrisross1703 That's a good question. I had a look around for some info on it, and I found a few interesting sites - particularly one with the liner notes from the DVD "Live at Ledreborg", which is this concert. procolharum.com/ph-dvd-ledreborg-liner1.htm procolharum.com/ph-cd-ledreborg-index.htm www.allmusic.com/album/in-concert-with-the-danish-national-concert-orchestra-and-choir-mw0000816788/credits It's a pretty interesting read, and I did get through most of it, but the closest reference to this song is "and the wistful minor-key prelude to A Whiter Shade of Pale was penned by Darryl Way (late of Curved Air)". There's also mention of some earlier arrangements from previous Procul Harum live recordings with other orchestras (notably 1971 with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra) being reused/reworked, so it's possible it was written decades before this concert? Gary Brooker himself appears to have orchestrated several of the songs himself, so he might have done this as well.
I still have my 45 record from 1967.. I was 18 at the time. Gary Brooker sounds even better 39 years later...Procol Harum was another British group invasion in the 60's.. Gotta love the talent that came from across the pond.
I have to say that your reaction to this song is the best I've seen. The look on your face of utter amazement when Gary Brooker started to sing and again when that great organ riff started reminded me of being 13 and my own reaction to this Classic song the first time I heard it. This song is from 1967, and has been one of my favorites for decades. I believe this version is even better than the original.............
The beautifully aged voice of Gary Booker combined with the orchestra and band is incredibly beautiful and moving. Makes me tear up every dang time. Hope it brought comfort to the viewer that requested it.
Great to see the effect that this song has on the younger generation who hear it for the first time! This song was a huge hit in the 60s for Procol Harum, and this live version really brings out the glory of the tune.
What an absolutely incredible performance! To know this is 4+decades after it was originally recorded makes it even more amazing. Gary’s voice is just as great, if not better.
Procol Harum was a big influence on the Beatles and was known to attend their concerts in the 60s. One of the most powerful songs in music. And this performance might be the best ever rendition/arrangement of the song.
First released in 1967 when I was 8. I remember going to school over the years, sitting around and listening to it in breathtaking awe. How can his voice still sound exactly the same 40 years later ❤
I was graduating from the American School in London just after this song by Procul Harum had come out and for some reason I felt like it was being played during our commencement. It was a song out of London; a song of our days. That's how it felt.
Was 18 when it came out; so blessed to be young in the 60-70this ; best time ever and best songs ever; true talent; true music; miss these days. Love you’re reaction; WHISH you good fortune; listen to good classics and pray.
This song hit the charts in my teenage years, huge hit. At first many believed the singer was black because Gary Booker's soulful voice. The song and Gary are still awesome 50+ years on. One of the great songs and voices of the British Invasion
I will be 70 this summer and hearing the first notes of Gary Booker's voice still gives me goosebumps. This is one of the few singles to sell over 10 million! I still remember driving the old 1959 green Chevy cranking this AM radio up as soon as this song would start driving though the Dairylands of Wisconsin. As you can see this song is still powerful. God so loved the world he/she gave us music.
LOVE LOVE LOVE. My favourite song ever and such a beautiful rendition! The original was from 1967 with a much younger Gary Brooker but his voice is just as beautiful as it was then. They are a British band. The song is like poetry. I told my daughter when I die I want this song played at my funeral along with Ave Maria. You have beauty and sensitivity in your soul James. I can see it in your eyes. I too struggle with anxiety and some depression. One day at a time. I don't know if you ever reacted to Stairway to heaven sung by Heart as a tribute to Led Zeppelin, but that's a beautiful performance as well.
Young man your soul was beautiful, is beautiful, and will always be beautiful. It’s such a pleasure watching you being moved by the music. Lots of love from an old woman in the uk x
Great reaction video. At the start you seem to be just nodding along and appreciating the tasteful orchestral arrangement. Then the camera cuts to this old English guy at the piano and, out of nowhere, he starts singing with a voice that can express all the sorrow and pain of the world. It looks like it hits you right between the eyes!
What a brilliant reaction James ! This is why this old man spends time sharing music with younger people , using the Reithian philosophy - to inform , educate and entertain !
I too lost my oldest son 5 years ago. This song literally makes me me have an out of body experience. Thank you for appreciating what music truly does for your soul. Your in a very special league of your own. Keep healing and always pray. It does get better.
To the woman who lost her son, I am so very sorry for your loss. My thoughts and Prayers are with you. I to lost my son and music does help to sooth our broken heart. Beautiful, awesome song JB, thank you for posting. Keeping you all in my Prayers.

Ive seen people pass away in my life but at 77 only my sainted mom was in touch wit GOD AT HER END .
Great reaction - love your authenticity when you react. One of the best songs ever written. Hits you right in the soul. Brings me to tears with its sheer beauty.
"The Hammond organ line of “A Whiter Shade of Pale” was inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Sleepers, Wake!” and “Air on the G String” but contrary to popular belief, the song is not a direct copy or paraphrase of any music by Bach although it makes clear references to both pieces."
I'm a new subscriber. I couldn't have asked for a better song to start with. I've been listening to Procol Harum for more than half-a-century. this song always bring out emotions you never knew you had. awesome reaction. I love when people enjoy music I've been listening to for more than 50 years.
I hope you can feel the catharsis you provide to your listeners, and hope it raises your spirits, as it does ours. You've done good. Peace, love, and Rock 'n Roll.
I saw this video for the first time a few years ago and I cried through the whole thing! My dad passed away 13 years ago and this was one of his favorites. I only wish he could have heard this version!❤
This is why we watch reaction videos, to witness others experience what we did when hearing it and through the shared experience, share a connection! Music does not need deep and meaningful lyrics to have a huge emotional effect, the sheer beauty of a song can be overwhelming emotionally.
Music is good for the soul. Soothes and calms whatever you might be going through. I've discovered other calming music to deal with every day stress. Loved your reaction. The song got to you . That's ok nothing wrong in showing emotions.
James, I'm glad that you and the lady who requested this derive comfort from it. The melody is lovely, the musicianship is grand, and the lyrics are wonderfully incomprehensible.
The lyrics are loosely based on Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the melody is based on Bach's Air on the G String, and the musicianship is top shelf. Gary Booker's voice has aged like a fine Scotch, smooth with a bit of smoky darkness and a clean finish.
Many of us share your conditions, and to be honest, this is why I love watching these - seeing people of all walks listening to so many different types of music and getting something positive from it is just freaking awesome. Good job, my man.
My first visit here, too. Fabulous reaction. And thank you for playing this for the person that wrote asking about it. Great job. If no one has suggested it, do The Moody Blues "Nights in White Satin" live version.

Never heard of Procol Harum before now but have heard the song somewhere, I’ve read it’s been in several movies over the years and I can see why. Brooker was 60 here and his voice was amazing and with the orchestra took everything to another level, genuinely made me very emotional listening to it. I also lost someone recently, my gran at 98 and I’ve been a wreck for months as a result and it’s probably why it didn’t take long for the tears to start flowing listening to this, but in a good way.
Isn't it wonderful that man still can move us with his voice....
Check out an original video of this band singing this song....I love old Rockers....
in my opinion A salty dog is the PH and Gary Brooker highest point...............and the version in the same concert is beyond immagination
@@andreascala2663 I've seen it, and it's excellent, also.
I love that I was there when it first came out. Feel sorry for today's kids not having this kind of music anymore.
Amen to that!
Well..they still have it , if they want it...? It is here, served on a golden plate !! :D :D
Just one of the best pieces of music to come out of the 1960's by the group Procol Harum. What a beautiful rendition.
This music makes you smile and maybe cry at the same time
The original is a just such an iconic classic. This live version with a full symphony orchestra is extraordinary. Oh to be there in the crowd to experience this masterpiece.
I would have been crying. Seriously.
Always been a favourite of mine, this is the best version by far IMO. Total world class quality performance by all, music doesn’t get any better than this.
Does anyone know who did the orchestral arrangements?
@@chrisross1703 That's a good question. I had a look around for some info on it, and I found a few interesting sites - particularly one with the liner notes from the DVD "Live at Ledreborg", which is this concert.

It's a pretty interesting read, and I did get through most of it, but the closest reference to this song is "and the wistful minor-key prelude to A Whiter Shade of Pale was penned by Darryl Way (late of Curved Air)".
After almost fifty years the voice still clear, very very impressing!
Music helps me deal with depression. It’s just so special.
I still have my 45 record from 1967.. I was 18 at the time. Gary Brooker sounds even better 39 years later...Procol Harum was another British group invasion in the 60's.. Gotta love the talent that came from across the pond.
Welcome to one of the world's best therapy songs
i love your reactions man..your authenticity, vulnerability and joy in what music does for us is beautiful..
The original from 1967 doen't have an Orchestra, but it is a classic.
Although it is heavily inspired by Bach's Bel air... which is for orchestra
Yep ❤️
This song just hits you where it should..and its hard to explain why. Just fantastic music genius
I'm 83, soon to be 84, and I've been listening to this song for a long, long time. But I think this is the most beautiful rendition extant.
I'm 70 years old and lost my lifelong friend in 2013. This version causes me to weep uncontrollably every time!
Peace.
Amen, spot on ❤
Your reaction was amazing because that’s what music does to you..pure admiration and happiness on your face.. blessings to you!
The beautifully aged voice of Gary Booker combined with the orchestra and band is incredibly beautiful and moving. Makes me tear up every dang time. Hope it brought comfort to the viewer that requested it.
JB! You leave it all on the table! We see into your soul, through your eyes.
So much love to you!!!!
Great to see the effect that this song has on the younger generation who hear it for the first time! This song was a huge hit in the 60s for Procol Harum, and this live version really brings out the glory of the tune.
I was around when this was first released and it's as brilliant now as it was then a classic
For us old types, what impresses us is that he still sounds so good nearly 50 years after he recorded this song.
Yes! I wasn't expecting that. Procol Harum are so loved by many.
I think if one doesn't cry after listening to this performance he's not a human being. Heaven opens its gates when this song is played.
This was actually one of John Lennon, of Beatles fame, favorite songs all time.
Not many reactors as expressive as you man. Love your reactions and this tune. Keep being you. Music heals all.
This song is a masterpiece. A hauntingly beautiful melody beautifully sung.
I needed this too.... I was so happy watching your surprise... I knew it was coming ... just completely joyous
One of my all time fave songs as a kid growing up and it still brings me to tears...
I don't know why youtube recommended this to me but so happy they did!! This is beautiful 😭♥️
It gets me everytime! I love your reaction to this, and telling your personal story. I understand.
Hello from northern Ireland, I grew up with this song,I'm 67 now,but I love this version with the orchestra,
Great reaction video. At the start you seem to be just nodding along and appreciating the tasteful orchestral arrangement. Then the camera cuts to this old English guy at the piano and, out of nowhere, he starts singing with a voice that can express all the sorrow and pain of the world. It looks like it hits you right between the eyes!
“This is what music is about. My spirit feels charged.” Yes, sir. Thanks for the beautiful reaction.
The extended version and lyrics are world class. Wow...this is a beautiful version~ thanks
What a brilliant reaction James ! This is why this old man spends time sharing music with younger people , using the Reithian philosophy - to inform , educate and entertain !
Love your raw emotion!
That's just how it makes me feel too!
I too lost my oldest son 5 years ago. This song literally makes me me have an out of body experience. Thank you for appreciating what music truly does for your soul. Your in a very special league of your own. Keep healing and always pray. It does get better.
The world needs heart sensitive people such as yourself now more than ever. You are important, you are kind and wise. Don’t ever doubt your worth. ❤️
To the woman who lost her son, I am so very sorry for your loss. My thoughts and Prayers are with you. I to lost my son and music does help to sooth our broken heart. Beautiful, awesome song JB, thank you for posting. Keeping you all in my Prayers.
I very suddenly lost a daughter so I get it. I also lost my husband a few years later. God bless.
@@suek7086 I am so sorry for your losses. I lost my husband 3 years before my son. God bless you.
You got soul bro and respect When my mom passed from cancer i was 12 and she lay on her bed tummy swollen from fluid . My sis and i she was 17 our mom turned to us and said .Don't cry for me if you could see what i see from this bed you would never cry again it was dec. 1956 2 days from Christmas on Christmas eve she got out of bed helped my sister with the dinner and on Chasms day she was her old self we all had a good day on the 26th she went back to bed and passed away on Jan 2 . Ive seen people pass away in my life but at 77 only my sainted mom was in touch wit GOD AT HER END .
I bet that surprised you such a wonderful song and singer. Music is great therapy.
Hey isn’t it wonderful that GOD gave these fabulous people talents that lift us up, blessed be. RIP Freddie light & love from Australia 🇦🇺
What a voice. What an overall sound. The orchestra and choir just lifted this classic song into a masterpiece revisited from some 50 years ago.
I saw this video for the first time a few years ago and I cried through the whole thing! My dad passed away 13 years ago and this was one of his favorites. I only wish he could have heard this version!❤
Stunning song. Utterly beautiful. I also struggle daily with anxiety. My best wishes from Scotland.
This is so different. I thought is was gonna be a classical concert. But when that man started singing omg. It is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Classic, classic, classic!! One of the best rock bands ever; please listen to Conquistador; you will thank me later. I love your reaction, by the way. THAT VOICE!
Happy memories.
