Video #2 : • pt2 React to Deftones ...
In this video I react to Spell of mathematics by Deftones.
Hi, I'm Dean Wolfe, a classic prog-rock guitar teacher on UA-cam. I grew up on 70s progressive music but abandoned the genre by the 90s because it was too 'hard-edged' for me. My all-originals prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i went into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar).
2020 was the year of my return to prog and the discovery of 30 years of great music which I'd paid no attention to- until now!
I also will react to 70s and 80s prog that i overlooked, like gentle giant, camel, etc.

Frank Delgado, their "sound designer", for lack of a more fitting term, is ALL OVER this album. He gives this band a whole different vibe.
Can't go wrong with Deftones. I love them as much as I do tool and Radiohead.
My 3 favorites bands 💙
@@gravitalez same
my other two fav bands lol
Same. Forever 90's 🙌
This song is one of my faves from the new album. The whole album is just amazing! Deftones in recent years has done a little more prog type stuff but nothing full blown.
One of the most beautiful songs they've ever written IMO. As beautifully alluring and seductive as something like Sextape, but with the heavier elements and riffs that I love as well.
My only complaint is that the incredibly gorgeous chorus doesn't come back at the end after the jazzy breakdown :(
Love this band, one of my favorites for sure. Really makes you think about the definition of 'prog', cause it's all relative to your criteria for it. To me, Deftones definitely have an edge to them that's 'prog', even though they can't really be compared to Dream Theater, Tool, Opeth, you name it. Glad you dug the song, good video.
Yeah, I consider 'prog' as anything progressive from the norm.
I've never actually listened to Deftones before. REALLY loved the instrumental slow groove during the last section. Cool song :)
Check out their new album Ohms, it’s excellent. Deftones are an acquired taste but it’s definitely worth deep diving into their amazing discography, no bad album to be found
What's great about Deftones in my opinion is that at on one hand their sound doesn't change much (too unique, of course), but on the other hand each song is unique and sounds the same while sounding different at the same time. If that makes any sense?
Check out their classic albums: Adrenaline (first album), Around The Fur, White Pony, Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan
Deftones❤️ Ps; They have Maynard as guest vocalist on Passenger from their masterpiece White Pony.
My favourite song on omhs 🤘🏻🔥
Deftones are considered Alternative Metal. They lean in all directions though. You mentioned the production. The album was produced by Terry Date. He also produced Soundgarden, Dream Theater, Pantera, Staind and bunch of other great bands.
I describe them as Vampire Cholo Art&B Metal
Good old Deftones going strong. Hey Dean you should do Intronaut - Digital Gerrymandering sometime.
got to intronaut finally! just posted this week
Thank you man!!!!!! Much love!!!
🤯 not prog rock in my opinion but i do love the deftones👍 thanks for the reaction
Looking back now I feel this song is talking about a couple in a catholic church ,"holy and strict" we would change our violent ways , I believe your love is the only thing needed to survives ,and being with her is everything ,while living suppressed by their sins it's almost an inescapable feeling of lust all around but but not just that ,it's an absolute gentle sway of human connection .and passionate in every way
Please, listen to more FAILURE and Days of the new, super great bands!
So glad you reacted to this! One of my faves on this album. Love Deftones! Been trying to rank their albums based on my personal preference over my 25 years of listening joy. This is a fun exercise considering Deftones' sound has changed over the years. Here's where I fall in so far, curious how others feel:
Deftones
White Pony
Saturday Night Wrist
Diamond Eyes
Koi Yo Nokan
Around The Fur
Gore
Adrenaline
Ohms
I love their s/t the best as well! I think I might like Diamond Eyes slightly more than Saturday Night Wrist even though I think I like the song Cherry Waves more than any other song on those two albums. Man it’s really hard to rate them all. I haven’t heard their new one yet and only have listened to Gore maybe a dozen times, so those two albums have room to grow for me. Here’s me incomplete list:
Deftones
White Pony
Diamond Eyes
Saturday Night Wrist
Koi Yo Nokan
Adrenalin
Gore
Around the Fur
Ohms (haven’t listened yet)
@@frightenedsoul Man, that's crazy how similar our lists are. Their self-titled normally doesn't get much love but I think it's fantastic from beginning to end. As far s Diamond Eyes and Saturday Night Wrist, that was the hardest to order for me, similar to you haha. Fave tracks on DE for me are Beauty School, Sextape, You've Seen the Butcher, Risk and 976-EVIL. Very hard to order them within the album. As for SNW, my faves are Cherry Waves (agreed, fantastic song), Beware, "Konami Code ", Xerces, and my clear favorite on the album, Kimdracula. I find it interesting we have ATF and Adrenaline swapped and to be fair, I have to give Ohms another 5 full playthroughs or so but so far, it isn't jiving like the others. Maybe I'm getting old and set in my ways lol. KNY standout tracks for me are Entombed (probably in my top 5 Deftones songs across the board), Tempest, Gauze, and of course Rosemary. Gore is starting to grow on me a bit but I really like Prayers / Triangles, Hearts / Wires, and Phantom Bride (likely another top 5 track, love the Jerry Cantrell solo). If you love Deftones as much as I do, make sure you check out Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus, I Am Giant (I know, lots of Aussie bands), Periphery, TesseracT, Ashes Divide, Fair to Midland, to name a few. Cheers!
@@MusikIsUniversal nice! I totally agree on those standout tracks. Phantom Bride rules. I listened to that one like 15 times in a row when it was released haha. My problem with Gore is the production/mixing. It sounds so muddy to me. Would love to hear Gore remastered. I’ve heard of all the bands you recommended except I Am Giant. Fair to midland I got into the album Fables from a Mayfly a long time ago and just haven’t dug into them any more. Love that album though. Karnivool I haven’t been able to get into but I should give them another shot. I think maybe the vocals didn’t do it for me but I can’t exactly remember. I’ve been recommended them a bunch though so I should really give them a proper try. Best album to start with for them?
@@frightenedsoul Totally agree with your comments about Gore, and maybe that is why I have the album so low as well. So after looking over this list, you can probably tell I favor bands with unique vocals, and while Aussie vocals might not necessarily be unique to many, I live in Arizona so don't much exposure. As far as Karnivool goes, Ian Kenny has interesting vocals like like Chino, Darroh of FTM, or even Claudio Sanchez of Coheed and Cambria, Karnivool has some very progressive sounds. They get unfairly compared to what I consider the greatest band of all time in Tool, but I can see how people make the association. I compare their sound to prog/experimental elements of Tool and vocal tendencies and pathways of Deftones, to create a substantial sound. He also fronts a band called Birds of Tokyo which is a little softer. As far as albums, Karnivool only has 3 and their most recent is probably the most experimental and hardest to get into, despite a few easily accessible tracks. Start from Themata. C.O.T.E. is what I would consider a "radio single" but it's a damn great one IMO which for me, is the sign of a great band. Move onto Sound Awake for their most progressive album IMO. Deadman is a 12 minute eargasm, especially after the first 3.5 minutes. For Asymmetry, if you were to only check out one song, listen to "We Are". Finally, give I Am Giant a shot. "After the War", "Electric Throne", and "Black Hole of My Heart", from their album The Horrifying Truth are solid representations. From Science & Survival, give "Death of You", and "Bought with Ignorance. Sold with Arrogance" a listen. Cheers!
@@MusikIsUniversal just dropping in to say I haven’t had time to listen to anything else but Ohms lol. I’ve been digging it hard! It’s growing on me fast and moving up quickly in my rankings. So much better that Gore. More groove, more atmosphere, and more experimentation.
this, radiant city, romantic dreams, knife party and engine no 9 i lose my $h!t everytime, SOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD Top 5
Nice react as always. Please try Mastodon - Jaguar God. Thanks
Lots of gems from this band, but my favorite is 'Kimdracula'.
If you get a chance you should check out a band named La Dispute. They're a very unique post-hardcore band that kind of...ebbs & flows between faster, rough post-hardcore and slower, lighter spoken-word. Their storytelling is top-notch as well. I'd say the song that would be a good introduction to them is "La Dispute - Edward Benz, 27 Times - Audiotree Live". I HIGHLY recommend the Audiotree version over their album version as it's a live in-studio version, that sounds even better than the album version. If you'd like to listen to their(in my opinion) best storytelling, you should check out their song "King Park" as well. It's based on a real-life event that happened, and the band really does a fantastic job of telling the story through the song.
The guitar has distortion? It's just hard to distinguish from the bass because stef uses like a 8 string.
Nine string on this album.
It's DEFTONES dude..not THE DEFTONES
Thanks The Ivan The Alexis, I'll remember in the future
@@deanwolfechannel ignore, they were originally called The Deftones when Chino first came up with the name. It’s just pedantic. The Deftones or Deftones it don’t matter
@@T0pMan15 True, but Stef named them. He wanted a name that sounded like a 50's pop or 60's soul group.
I use both, interchangeably.
