- demo video of my circuit-bent SK-1.
UPDATE: Detailed build docs are now available here: www.papernoise....
ATTENTION: I really appreciate all the great feedback and the kind words, but if you're going to comment "How much do you take to make me one of these?" or "can you build me an SK-1 like this?"
The answer is, and will always be: NO WAY! I have my reasons, believe me. I'm not going to build one of these ever again. So please don't ask.
more INFO:
0:30 mutlimode VCF, the concertodrone features a LP/HP synthacon-style filter with basic voltage control. The filter is pretty overdriven and has a nice nasty resonance
1:00 555-timer-based LFO. I've added a simple oscillator based around a 555-timer-IC. This one can be used as a modulator with the VCF or patched into any other jack for some unpredictable effects
2:00 lo-fi echo effect. I've added a PT2399-based echo/delay effect. I don't use it very often, because it's a bit too lo-fi and I should have extended the control over the parameters a bit more. Also I didn't include a proper dry/wet control
2:45 the paching! this is the interesting part. most of the patch points are taken from reed ghazalas famous guide. I've added a bunch of new ones and included a proper pitch control (using an LTC1799 from circuitbenders.co.uk).
if casio wanted to make money, they'd reissue this keyboard, exactly as you circuit-bent it.
Or just re release it as it was, for circuit benders and enthusiasts to pick it up and modify.
One of the best circuit bents ever seen, thanks for sharing!
+kipparimies thanks a lot!
I've wasted my time learning how to play guitar!
Learning to play the guitar is NEVER a waste of time...
BRUHHH!
btw. good news. the project documentation is progressing! just need to open up the thing and measure some components... and then start to wrap up things!
Hannes Pasqualini can't wait to see what it looks like on the inside ;) finally finding time for my own SK projects, and yours is easily one of the best ever
It's online here: www.papernoise.net/concertodrone/
How much would it cost to make one for me? :D
what about $100K? :)
No seriously... I'll just copy paste this from the video's description:

As you can see, I get this a lot. Sorry, but I'm not going to build any of this. But there's a lot of people who can provide such a service. Try Shane Williams aka X1L3.
Sorry. next time I will read description. Thanks for info!
It's mandatory for keyboardists and synthesists to have a cat. Otherwise, you can be fined and your gear impounded.
oops..let me throw my gear out then..I would not let children, pets, nor smokers near my gear..hehehehe
Doggo disagrees 🐕
@@michaels5166 Yeah... smokers super drunked near the gear on after a gig in a small place beause they are just retards who have no idea of the cost and have no respect. I already fought with one.
You made a semi modular sk-1 😅
Great job!
You have turned it into a modular synth!
this sounds better than most synths out there! I love it!
Thanks! It does have a very peculiar character of its own. Though I should point out that it also has some weird limitations due to how I built it. For example you can't modulate the filter with the internal envelopes... which should be possible, since the circuit uses control voltages internally and it has envelope generators. But it was a bit above my capabilities :)

Djeezes!! I just smoked a joint and enjoyed your nice casio, and then came the cat.....
Lol! Peace.
+Blatend Crude Lol! That's how it's supposed to be enjoyed! Thanks!
same...
Seriously a frankensynth of the rarest kind-👏👏
Absolutely amazing...almost looks Buchlaesque.
loftrecording I guess it's the banana jacks. Actually I think it looks more like a Serge in black :)
Sounds that start a 6:30 sound like Super Metroid!! :D
The only circuit bent machine I've seen that rivals the work of noystoise.
Thank you very much! Tanner Galvin is the absolute master of circuit-bent devices! I was very inspired by his work, and the fact that he shares his process has been of great help! I think that what I made is still very far away from what he does. What makes his instruments so great is that he's a great designer, engineer and craftsman, which isn't easy to come along.
I'll have to look that one up.
Beyond bent! Absolutely amazing.
Inspiring, after a year of studying electronics, i finally set minding on the replication of synth circuits and circuit bending. Love video.
So far i had only modified a yamaha pss 140 and to be honest was not that good.
I just fixed a Sk1 that was broken (a very simple shortcircuit jusy inmidiatly by the poweer suply), probably its gonna be next on the circuit bending adventure.
Again, cool video.
Greetings from Tijuana, worlds murder capital!
JESUS FUCKING CHRIST IS THAT REALLY WHAT'S LEFT OF A CASIO SK SERIES?
The sounds at 1:00 would be perfect for a song!
fuck thats awesome! one bad ass piece of homemade equipment
Really sick. 1:10reminds me of the xx xx - Crystalised
excellent done, Sir! this is a very musical and planful circuit bending what you have done there! I also still own my sk-1!
Could you share the 555 timer circuit? I have an MT-140 I'm bending, but completely new to this.
Sure! No secrets here, it's a variation on a well known circuit. You can find it in this PDF here: papernoise.ocloud.de/index.php/s/RbnqB8QjqCwy6kq#pdfviewer, on page 15. There's also an in-depth explanation about the circuit. It's all written in Italian, but it should translate ok with some automated translation app.
also, the timbre at 00:18 reminds me so much of some of the synth sounds of Oneohtrix Point Never's Garden of Delete
That's a great album! Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the free documents. A rare thing nowadays !
I would really not have been able to make the thing in the video without the generosity of other people, who helped me and shared their knowledge. So this really is the least I can do.
Excellent work. Subscribed!
Cool beans. Got an SK 1, hmmmmm
This isn't just circuit-bent; this is Escher down the wormhole Mobius strip territory.
Haha thanks a lot! Best comment I got this year!
How much did it cost to produce? I want one. I own a few of sk 1s to sacrifice one to the evil sound lord's.
Hmm, that's hard to say. I had to do the thing twice, because I messed it up the first time. I think I've spent around 200-250€ on this, maybe more. Maybe you can do it more efficently than I did and not break as much stuff and it will be less than that though. I think if you like hacking electronics and have some basic soldering and modding skills this is definitely worth it. You can make your own electronic instrument. It's a lot of work, but also a great experience!
Doc approves... well done sir.
Great patch board construction for hours of audio experiments. :)
+Peter Voss it really is one of those instruments that you can get lost into... especially because it often does totally new things. The patch bay enhanced this even more. Usually you'd probe connections with test probes on the circuit and then solder the ones you like most. In this case, you can go on probing things even once you have put everything into an enclosure!
wow!! nice work👽
How you do it? Is awesome, im lerning circuit bend, if you have a guide to do this I love to learn how and it helos me alot to improve my knowledge
It's all here: www.papernoise.net/concertodrone/ Glad you liked it! Good luck on your circuit-bending journey! It's definitely a great way to learn about electronics and instrument making!
@@kurodama-kvsu thank you very much for the guide, I hope you make more videos and proyects like this in the near future. :D

this seems a bit better than the sk-1 i had...i want this edition :/
Hehe thanks! Casio should make a reissue with all the mods lol! :D
Grandioso.. ¿Como así lo adaptas con circuito aún órgano diminuto y eso funciona sin ningún software o solo es a coriiente? Excelente quisiera saber como lo hisites o algún consejo que me puedas para poder conseguir los circuitos
Utterly fantastic! 😍😍😍 Big like!
groovy
I love the original SK-1, but ithis makes me speachless. AWESOME
0:16 really nice voice
Awesome. Where did you get the coloured patch jacks?
I think I got them here: www.thonk.co.uk/ But you should be able to find them on shops like Mouser as well. Just search for "banana jacks"
@@kurodama-kvsu Thanks!
nice job man. cool cat, too
the cat thing freaked me out

So you don't want to see the my video that I'm working on? It alternates quiet and relaxing landscapes with freaked out cats...
oh god I'm squirming in my seat
but now that I have your attention
*MAKE ME A KEYBOARD*
Hahaha lol! NEVER!!!
darn, I'll have to figure it out myself then
I would just buy a Microbrute instead. :)
Who's a clever Bunny then :O) Pure genius !!!
Thanks for this- but if I may, It's like you built another synth and are using the keyboard to play it....closer to full on engineering more than bending.
Well, I guess the distinction is kind of tricky. I know this is intended as a compliment so first of all thanks a lot for the kind words! I do have to say though that all of the sound generation still comes from the original Casio Sk-1 circuit, and most of the manipulation of it is real circuit bending (what I have done is just rewire the connections of the main integrated circuit to glitch it out or to create some intermodulation, basing my mods to the great work of Reed Ghazala, whom I cannot thank enough for it!). The only part that is not circuit bending, is the not-so-effective LFO and the lowpass filter. For those I've not engineered much, but used other people's circuits. For the filter my fullest gratitude goes to Shane Williams, who's a really talented circuit bender.
In the end I didn't do all that much, because to be honest I'm not much of an engineer and I don't understand much about electronics. But that's really the point and beauty of circuit bending, that basically anybody can do it. And it's also the point of me sharing this project and documenting it, so that it may inspire others to try the same thing. It's also about sharing the pain I guess hahaha :D
Are you taking orders.
Nope I'm not, sorry.
Hi there ! Is this possible with a sk-5 ? Thank you !
I've never opened an SK-5, but it might be similar. I suggest you ask around in a bending-related online group or forum.
Or you can just open it up and see if the bends work the same using some test leads.
Thank you !
Nice, didn't realize you had a youtube channel.
For the sounds 5.33 onward do you know which particular mod enabled these sounds?
that's the "Skew" mod, as Ghazala called it. The way it works, you connect two of the Skew points (in my case with the banana connectors), then you play a note and press the button. The button activates the connection and weird things happen. It does not work the same with all sounds, and different patch points create different effects. Check my build docs for more info (see video description).
I liked sound of minute 1:00 ... Nice job.
the end is the best Cat in Godzillla style
Looks like one of those old phone operator boards.
Who built this mod, including the box. They did an amazing job on this sk-1
I did build it of course! Thanks for the comment! :)
so very cool!!!!! thanks for sharing!!
That was amazing stuff towards the end!
Me and that cat at the end shared a momentary flight or flight response lol great music my guy
Haha, thanks a lot! :)
Edit interesting , good , I like ;-)
hi, uhm, i have many doubts, i read the pdf but the doubts are still there. What are the external material you use? i mean i really want to make a CB like u but obviously with my bends, the only thing that i need to know is what external material did you use to make the LFO, the Cutoff, the delay, etc, etc. What external material did i have to buy? thanks
Sure, no problem. If by "materials" you mean the external circuits that I have added, this is the stuff I've used: a small 555-timer based oscillator which we made (cargocollective.com/secretmedialab/sml-1-555-oscillator), it's very similar to others that you can buy (like the get-lofi one I mention in the PDF). In retrospect, the way I have wired it in my bend, the oscillator is not all that useful. But I know that one can do more with it. Just no idea how. Then I used a Steiner-Parker VCF board designed by a guy named Shane Williams. Not sure he still makes those. He's on facebook and in various CB groups, in case you can try and ask him there. Third thing I used a cheap delay board made by Velleman (www.velleman.eu/products/view/?id=381208). It's very lo-fi though, so you might or might not like it. It's easy to build though and comes as a complete kit. You might find better ones around. I'd also look into DIY guitar pedal projects.
@@kurodama-kvsu THanks a lot, so you used on thhe concertodrone, some guitar pedals? and yeah i read the pdf and look for some VCF but i dont found useful information or places to buy one. What would u recommend me to buy? and about the delay, i think i can use a guitar pedal and add to the proyect but without the box of the pedal only the pcb and all the wires, etc.
@@kurodama-kvsu i think im gonna use the 555 timer and the pt2399 from synthrotek
@@by.daekeryyy Yes I used a casio SK-1 (of coruse), 3 DIY circuits: 555-timer LFO, lowpass filter, delay + of course lots of buttons, switches, potentiometer and cable.
There's many places where you can boy stuff like this. I think the getlofi website got hacked some time ago and nobody cared about bringing it back. Don't try to buy stuff there. You can find stuff at these places though: smallbear-electronics.mybigcommerce.com/, www.banzaimusic.com/ and www.musikding.de/and www.exploding-shed.com/. Of course at Mouser or Digikey and the likes. But I always find it really complicated and time-consuming to order stuff there. I would try the small ones before going with the latter.
The VCF could be the most tricky thing to get. I don' think Shane makes those anymore and I am not really sure I know any other projects. I haven't been looking into these things for some time now. So again, if you're on facebook, look up some of the many circuitbending groups and as around. Just search for "circuitbending" and you should find quite a few. Or you can try www.circuitbenders.co.uk/but I'm not sure how many people still go there.
@@kurodama-kvsu the concertodrone can works with the internal speaker?
Interested in releasing - selling the build instructions for this little beauty?
+Russell Martin I have been planning to release some instructions, just never got around doing it. I'll probably do this at some point (hopefully soon), but I can't promise anything about when exactly.
+Hannes Pasqualini (papernoise) Thank you for the reply - totally understand this this sort of thing sometimes never happens but fingers crossed it does - please drop a reply if/when they are available - would be an amazing project - im not very technical so would be great to try and build one :)
Yes sure! I'll be posting about it here! Anyway, a good starting point to bend the SK-1 is Reed Ghazala's book, I got many bend points from there.
Build docs are online here: www.papernoise.net/concertodrone/
This is the coolest thing I've ever seen
Make a song with it
Yes I do have to make a proper song with it. Or maybe even an EP. :) I've been using it a lot live though (eg. ua-cam.com/video/qKa8qyV146U/v-deo.htmlm34s)
Amazing. Just amazing. Love it.
nice build hannes :)
nice dance music sounds in it
Wow, great work. I'm just getting into the circuit bent thing and I'd really like to start making my own stuff. Can you suggest a first step for me to start at?
Yes sure! First of all, start with a really simple toy that makes some sound. Instruments like the SK-1 or the Speak&Spell are very rewarding, but they can take a lot of time, and if you mess things up, you'll hate yourself a bit.
Try to find the following books: Handmade Electronic Music by Nic Collins and Circuit Bending by Reed Ghazala (though the latter is really hard to find). Join some online group or forum about bending and ask for tips.
In general, the easiest bend, which you can perform on most toys is the so called "pitch mod". Every cheap circuit has some resistor that determines the speed at which the thing works, substitute that with a potentiometer and you can change it dynamically. This guy has a nice blog and posts a lot of about bending: little-scale.blogspot.it/. This is a g+ community I manage, come by and say hello: plus.google.com/communities/108974083238233752245.
wow thanks man!
Build docs are online here: www.papernoise.net/concertodrone/
Incredible \m/
beautiful sk1 man
would you ever make one of these for a certain price ??
+John Humes I get this question a lot, but sorry, the answer is no. I'm not a builder, I do these things for myself occasionally and it always takes me ages and I make lots of mistakes. There's plenty of skilled benders out there who could build you something similar.
+Hannes Pasqualini (papernoise) How much would you estimate the cost? Considering parts, labour etc.
that's a tough question. Well, a rough estimate would be 50€ for the SK1 (if you get a good deal on ebay), about 150€ for the plexy and wood (maybe a bit less), then probably at least 100€ for components. There's a lot of pots and banana jacks in there. I have also added a VCF and a Delay, which add quite a bit to the cost. This is just a very rough estimate... I made this over the years, often using parts I already had from other projects.
Build docs are online here: www.papernoise.net/concertodrone/
So sick. I want this mod!!
+Jeffrey Harris thanks! It's not impossible to do it yourself. Most of it is nicely covered in Reed Ghazala's book about circuit bending. I will also release the documentation about what I did here, as soon as I find some time.
Build docs are online here: www.papernoise.net/concertodrone/
That is amazing. wow I love this. Should submit this to create digital music... cdm.link/
You know what... that's a good idea! Just wrote them! :)
Wait. I can build one of these? Oh yes.
Hehe yes you can! www.papernoise.net/concertodrone/ But only attempt it if you have a bit of experience with soldering, bending and making stuff.
how much did the hardware cost you on this beast of a synth, also do you have schematics for this?
+Lalaland Well hard to say. I worked on if for a couple of years and had to redo things a couple of time due to errors on my side. I'd say that it probably cost me more than buying an off-the-shelf analog synth :)
Schematics: Many of the bends are well documented in Ghazalas book about circuit bending. The rest will be documented when I get around putting together the documentation for this.
Hannes Pasqualini
Thank you soo much for your reply, well even if it cost more then an of the shelf analog synth, it must mean something that you build an an amazing synth with your own hands, that is a one off and is nowhere to be found in any shops or labs apart from your own place, that in my eyes eyes is priceless and well worth it. Thank you for mentioning the book, I will immediately dive into that :D have a magnififcent day :D
Lalaland yes totally agree with you, otherwise I would never have embarked in this adventure. :)
As I said, if you have a bit of patience... the documentation for this project is coming sooner or later
Hannes Pasqualini
I'll be waiting for it, beleieve me, it sounds awesome, that thing is a beast. Could you let me know when you release the documentation on this, please :D
I'll post about it here and on my little tumblr blog: papernoize.tumblr.com
Excellent workmanship. Outstanding sounds. Very impressive design. I understand you wouldn't build this for anyone, but would you be willing to share your schematics?
Yes I will totally do it! Hopefully soon, I just keep having to postpone that because 2016 has been a really busy year so far!
Would Happily donate some $$ for your time with the schematic!! this is amazing!!
what shinyshinyshinythings said!

Long time fan of your works, we talk some on facebook.
+AMOKIAN oh yes! thanks for checking this out!
I just subscribed, I thought I was following years ago...
I think it can be upgraded with some hi-freq. restoring module so it will sound like a pro-machine.
it certainly could. But the question is: why use an SK-1 to do that? I mean, you can get a lot of pro-sounding synths for little money with a much better interface than the Sk-1. Also, I think the great thing about the SK-1 is that it sounds the way it sounds, why loose the lo-fi-ness?
IMO, "lofi-ness" isn't connected with lost hi-frequency range. I don't know why did you've choose SK-1 :D MAybe for it's sizes or some special features... my guess.
Well the high frequency range is also reduced here because everything goes through a lowpass filter, but that's intended. I do agree that lofi-ness isn't something related to reduced high-frequency range.
I did choose the SK-1 because you can bend it like nothing else out there. It offers a lot of possibilities and is very forgiving (i.e. it doesn't crash as much as other toy instruments do). I do think it sounds very lo-fi, but that's something I have embraced.
Could you build me a parts list to do a similar mod? I see i need the LTC1799, but im not sure what else to buy for my bend
m hiltman Sorry seen this comment only now. Not sure I can make you a part list, can't remember all I've used, but I can sure give you some tips and links.
when i wrote this i was not sure if i needed a resistor for the LTC pcb. I ended up finding a way to do it without one, but had a accident now i have to order another. I am interested in installing the delay you used. Any info on that would be amazing.
Build docs are online here: www.papernoise.net/concertodrone/
pretty cool. good job!
More videos like this please!
You still have this beast?
Oh yes I still have it and surprisingly, it also still works. Well mostly at least. Some things do behave a bit weirdly now, but it's minor things. I had to open it up and resolder wires a couple of times, 2 times right before a live gig (never do a gig without a soldering iron at hand!).
I recently used it for this live streaming performance here: ua-cam.com/video/M_BqZ06l8J0/v-deo.html
@@kurodama-kvsu Cool... thanks 😊
cool stuff mate
amazing and inspiring
are you getting the circuitry for the lfo and vcf from the sk1 or are they involving externally added parts?
+Magma Sunburst The LFO is a small 555-timer based circuit we developed, similar to the ones offered by Getlofi and Synthrotek. The VCF is a board made by Shane Williams and is basically a Synthacon-type of filter that can do LP HP and BP. So yeah, it's all externally added parts.
Thanks

Nice, downloaded and saved
i love that the glitch gives you a Just Intoned Major 3rd in the higher register, makes for a weird unstable grounding to the chords
around the 6:50 mark
Which part are you referring to? It's certainly so by chance and not by design though :)
6:56
Thanks! Yeah, that is my favourite bend on the thing, some really interesting sounds can come out of that one! Sometimes it sounds totally eerie, sometimes you get some very harmonic things out of it. It can be a bit hit or miss sometimes though… but that's part of the nature of such an instrument.
wow man, you're amazing
WOW! GREAT!
Amazing!
Fantastic 😱
Awesome 😁
Excellent
NICE WORK MAN
me too ! nice!
a semi modular sk1? So rad!
that's the basic idea :) After all, what a semi-modular synth is doing is just exposing waypoints in the circuit so you can reconfigure it. Though of course the semi-modularity in this bent SK-1 is a lot less "logical" from what you'd do when designing a synth from scratch. There's no clear signal flow which you reconfigure... it's more like you crash the CPU in different ways so it makes interesting sounds :)
Cool,. Sounds fun to me!
wonderful!!!
An amazing machine 🤘
quite inspiring!
Cool!
Drool!
sounds so cool!
That ending! Great bend!
I should have kept my sk1.
Thomas Ramsey They are pretty easy to find in flea markets and on ebay. Totally worth it imho!
