You can MIDI up the Casio SK's, you can also "bend" it without bending it, by that I mean if you sample something then turn it over and take off the battery cover, if you are fast enough, you can take your finger and push one of the batteries back really quickly...then put the battery cover back on. Turn it back over and play it, what happens is buy pushing one of the batteries back quickly( and I mean quickly) you corrupt the volatile sample ram so what ever you sampled will sound bent...until you turn it off.
Like so many others this was my very first keyboard and I literally taught myself to play with this thing. Had I known it would be a verifiable classic 30 years later...I probably still would have completely worn it out. I still have it somewhere, taped-on keys and all.
Thank you so much for posting this!! My brother and I both got the Casio SK-1 for Christmas one year and we loved them!! You brought back some great memories, so again thank you!
i had one of these as a kid. had plenty of fun on it. when they first come out. ended up getting the sk-5 too. i would sample my voice and then go on the cb radio with it.. people used to wonder how i could mess with a voice haha. giving it the max headroom effect. well sampling had only just come out.
I got one for christimas in like 88. Almost drove my parents insane with that thing. This brought back memories I didn't remember having. Mostly of trying to find it hidden in my parents closet😂
I owned this many years ago. It was my firs Keyboard and It was just a toys. But I'd like to have it back, I had a lot of fun with it when I was just boy and was learning to play. Thanks for sharing this. It reminds me about when a I was 16. It's 30 ago...
It's not very easy to find a video of an SK-1 that hasn't been Circuit Bent/modified, this saddens me greatly, even though I never owned an SK-1. There are some videos of standard SK-1's that haven't been modded, but be careful what you look for on UA-cam!
I've owned a few CASIO SK-1's from the mid 1980's up until the mid 2000's, they were fun and only $2.99 CAN. used at Value Village Scarborough Ontario in the 1990's. The price matched the sound. 😅
I used to have one of these. I must have put in 50,000 hours on it. I remember the sampling time was 1.4 seconds, so I'd try to sample rhythms at the right tempo so they looped cleanly. The SK1 and SK4 were amazing bargains for the time. You could create some pretty interesting stuff.
0:06 - I got one of these for Christmas in the late 80s. I'm pretty sure that loop you started playing here almost drove my parents insane. The memories as soon as you played that😂 Mostly of trying to find it after they hid it in their closet😂
The brass ensemble is my favourite sound on the sk1. Surprisingly analog sounding.. especially when recorded from the line out into a nice valve pre. Magic.
Electromachines Dude u can really get a lot outta this u can get those basement grime analog samples just gutter and dry asf plus it's presets especially for a almost toy like keyboard this was groundbreaking I think it was like the first sampler built in a keyboard or ik it was top 10 first
I had me one of these. I used to sample the click the button made when you released and then loop it.....It emmulated a killer distorted electric guitar
hey guakingo, I did tons of stuff with the sk-1 and a fostex 4-track in the past too!you´re totally right, that were wonderful days!that, what people nowadays are fighting hard for feeding the next trend up with artificial retro sounds, had has its normal charming of simplicity that days.I´m missing it.
My sister also had one of these, and I think I played it more than her! Of course, she had a piano, so she played that most of the time. A few years back, my mom was getting rid of some things, and she asked if I wanted this little Casio, and I said no! I kick myself for that now. What was I thinking? The sample at 2:58 was always my favorite.
We had one of these when we were kids! We used to think it was the funniest thing in the world when we were kids because we would burp into the microphone and then play it back in the demo.
The real creative musicians in the making were the ones who did NOT think it was hilarious to sample burps or farts like every other kid did and then got bored after two minutes
help ; ( something died in my sk1. The "sample" button doesnt work and when i press it the whole keyboards lags and i have to reboot it to be able to play anything. Actually i cant even turn it off after i press sample. i have to move power switch up and down 2 times to make it turn off it self
NaSygnale Mine does the same thing! Haven't figured anything out about it though. I bought mine from a secondhand store so theres no telling what abuse it has been through.
When you talk about "The real sound of the SK-1" do you mean the sound the keyboard is supposed to make when it hasn't been Circuit Bent? I assume that's what you mean.
rg7120 it is a actual sampler very lil time tho but when this came out it was HOT! I mean everyone wanted one I used to luv sampling my farts I was a 8 yr old lil turd somuch fun doe😂
rg7120 oh that's a preset that brass set he played the chords behind that fast ass like8 bit beat for as small as this was it had sum decent sounds but to really appreciate them I used to put on headphones
Why do I want to go to a thrift store and pick one of these up? I'm into animation and Homestar Runner, the creators of that used to use this keyboard.
I spent hours sampling my farts and playing music with them when I was a kid in the 80’s on this machine. My mother loved it.
wonderful

Ich hatte das Teil als Kind und könnte grad im Strahl kotzen, dass es weg ist...total genialer Sound.
When the drums came in, I half expected Homestar Runner to run onto the screen and start prancing about like an idiot.
stwong bayud
OMG!!! I had one of these!!! First keyboard I ever bought. Wow! Takes me way back. Oh, the 80s.
I got one for christimas in like 88. Almost drove my parents insane with that thing. This brought back memories I didn't remember having. Mostly of trying to find it hidden in my parents closet😂
man I found one of these at the goodwill for 3.00 bucks and can't stop playing it its awesome.I trying to figure out what every thing does.
These things are $100-200 now because of idiots who produce lofi songs now lololol

From the smallest toy to the biggest beast of analog. You are a dedicated collector. Good, informative vid again. Keep going!

I still have mine. Bought it in 85. It sounds as if it were brand new.
🎹👍

and dont forget my all time favorite" flute" preset
@james Doctor Clarinet set is also beautiful!

The record loop probably drove me insane too.
That's why I don't have it anymore! 🤣
Man this was my first real keyboard when I was like 8 I LOVED THIS THING #80sbaby
:))
I had an Sk-1 when I was 6 years old! LOL! This was back in 1986! Good keyboard sounds and it had a sampler!! All it needed was midi.
The brass ensemble is my favourite sound on the sk1. Surprisingly analog sounding.. especially when recorded from the line out into a nice valve pre. Magic.

my cousin had one of these when we were younger.. i wanted one sooo bad.. he had the sk-1, the rapman, and one of the ram cart casios..
My sister also had one of these, and I think I played it more than her! Of course, she had a piano, so she played that most of the time. i was like 5 when i first saw one of these - an since then ive been in love with making music
cappa318 I was right there with ya bro
Holy crap.., an SK-1 that has NOT been circuit bent! Great vid man :)
It really does sound like a SNES game, those old Casio Keyboards are cool. Too Bad I was technically a baby when these units came out.
Reminded me of my first keyboard.
I love those songs patterns and seq's it's awesome to hear such great music!
When you were inverting the chords in the first half, you got some really full sounds out of it :D
1:33 HOMESTAR THEME XD
1:50 EGGS THEME! (Also from Homestar)
@Slashe50 I expected something else... this rhythm actually has been used by a commercial Austrian group for a well-known song... see: EAV - Burli
this one was so much fun when I was a kid and later :)
This was the first keyboard I ever had.
found one yesterday in mint condition for only 4,80 euro! So fun!
🙌
I remember having one of these as a kid! I want one now!!!
We had one of these when we were kids! We used to think it was the funniest thing in the world when we were kids because we would burp into the microphone and then play it back in the demo.
Great! I have a SK-5 and a RZ1.
SOunds better than I remember as a kid
:D
僕も昔持ってました。初めて買ったキーボードでした。サンプラー機能が画期的でしたね。
J'avais le même et j'ai composé des dizaines de morceaux avec !

If you snap or flick your finger in sample loop mic… it sounds like an organ.
:)
YIHA! rocking hard! :-) Ideal keyboard for hip religiious gatherings.
Sounds a like Forever Young at first.
🎹🙌
Every kid in my neighborhood had one of these things! My favorite part was annoying people with the "Ho, ho, ho ..." sample!
howed you get it to sound so good mine sounds awful
Hey, I like it. Not too dissimilar to a Super Nintendo :]
1:50 sounds like muse's undisclosed desires
beautiful song lol
Old school stuff héhé the best
Can you tell more about the drums that are in this video?
YIHA! rocking hard! :-) Ideal keyboard for hip religious gatherings.
Haha I was just taken back 24 years into the past! :)
The real creative musicians in the making were the ones who did NOT think it was hilarious to sample burps or farts like every other kid did and then got bored after two minutes
😁
fantastic.
It sounds analog because it is sampled ^^
have you sold that on ebay? i bought one with a retrosound sticker on it... about 4 hours ago^^
help ; ( something died in my sk1. The "sample" button doesnt work and when i press it the whole keyboards lags and i have to reboot it to be able to play anything. Actually i cant even turn it off after i press sample. i have to move power switch up and down 2 times to make it turn off it self
maybe is broke a solderpoint
NaSygnale Mine does the same thing! Haven't figured anything out about it though. I bought mine from a secondhand store so theres no telling what abuse it has been through.
some kind of loose thingamajig. open it up, mess around with the ciruitry until you get sound and solder it.
When you talk about "The real sound of the SK-1" do you mean the sound the keyboard is supposed to make when it hasn't been Circuit Bent? I assume that's what you mean.
wher can i get one.which store has them
The sound at 1:50 made me smile... So childish, but still fun.
GandaMelgao he'll yea that funky video game type drop
Our school is full of these. (at least 20)
dammit, i got to fix the broken keys on mine and put it back togheter, thanx alot dood, ... mabey i make them outta wood or something LOL
Awesome! But I prefer Yamaha or Roland.
could be a broken trace on the circuit board, just a thought,
How can I record what I create on the SK1 into a DAW?
I reckon you’d plug it into your interface and play it.
Is that first sound built into the SK-1 or is it a sample? It actually sounds very good!
rg7120 it is a actual sampler very lil time tho but when this came out it was HOT! I mean everyone wanted one I used to luv sampling my farts I was a 8 yr old lil turd somuch fun doe😂

Hey, does the Casio SK-1 have a place in the back for an Audio out chord so I could plug it into a speaker?
um...how would this video have been made otherwise?
I have !
Didn't we all...
Can it take batteries
Yes you can either use adapter or 5 batteries
what kind of cord do you use to plug it into an amp? thanks.
very coll... funny
its sounds like homestarrunner
does it need an amp or built in speaker?
cougartownfan1 it has a built in speaker
Phoque...I'll stick to my Emu2,Yamaha Dx7, memory Moog and the Casio wk-200...
Pretty cheap on Ebay
Teenage mutant ninja turtle mask
Broken speaker wire.
you're not an American if you dislike this video,...save the Casio from the dreaded circuit benders
dont firget the fkute
SO VAPOR!
I want it to record my farts
ADVENTURE TIME!
