@@soad4verr This is actually something I can't stand about FFXIV. The actual raids, trials, and dungeons are AMAZING but it does not feel like an MMORPG. It feels like a lobby game in the vain of Phantasy Star Online, but way more on-rails (and not as customizable and fun as PSO)

@@NicholasBrakespear Eso is as soul less as any else mmo's. They are all running around with their shiny mount they bought from the cash shop. In Vanilla Wow every single thing you get is earned, how it's supposed to be.
I love seeing "Your skill in has increased". Brings back so many memories of having to temporarily be a melee hunter after you get your Ice Barbed Spear.
Depending on the mob group and how much rage you have thunder clap is still viable for the debuff that reduces the attack speed of the mobs. In most cases it's just once at the start. But it reduces incoming damage of melee mobs by quite a significant margin.
That's what I miss. This guy handing the tank an armor potion, the mage making food. This other guy found a scroll of spirit to put on the healer. Stuff like that is so simple but feels so good.
Remember that Demo shout and Battle shout generate threat, if you hit more than 3 friendly players with your BS it generates quite a big portion of threat :)
Dude, finally seeing someone bandage mid fight again before hitting the sheep... that makes me so happy! I was honestly not sure if I would be interested in classic. I am now. I absolutely am. :D
The less rotational stuff you have to do, the more you have to pay attention to small shit to micro manage. So tab targeting and stuff like that. The more complicated your base rotation is, the harder it is to pay attention to stuff like mob casting animations.
@@rick5787 Not only was he only level 14 which means he doesn't have shield block, also he hasn't trained demoralizing shout or revenge. Early to mid-level dungeons you will be very low on rage but when you get to SM armory etc where mobs start hitting harder you will have alot more rage to play with. It's alot more interesting to play a vanilla warrior tanking a dungeon in vanilla compared to BfA, where you're a glorified DPS with alot of health and armor, spamming thunder clap and shield slam.
As a guy who is planning to tank in Classic, this has been super helpful as I never got a chance to tank in BC. I tank nowadays because I just enjoy the play style and seeing the old talent tree makes me giggity with excitement to play at the end of August.
The good feel about the gameplay comes from the fact, you actually have to focus on the gameplay, force you to understand the mechanics, rage/mana, casts, mobs and their HP and casting, etc. You do this and you're actually immersed in your character, due to the fact you have to focus so much. That's the beaty of Vanilla. Also yes, it's relaxing, totally 100% behind that. You get to just chill when doing things right. Yes, the gameplay is slow, but at later levels, 45+ it gets so much better and at 60 you rarely have time to "remove hands" from your tanking tbh. You have to do so many things at the same time and ensure nothing goes wrong. Classic tanking for me is so much more fun over current WoW.
Thunder clap is really good. It debuffs and its very good to reduce damage, One thing you can do is to get tactical mastery to give you that 10 rage every time you switch so you charge and do the thunder clap. Then switch to defensive and have 10 rage ready.
totally forgot that enemies didnt have a channel-ability-bar. Yet another thing that made old WoW more immersive. You actully had to WATCH what the enemy was doing.
@@ASIRA89 it depends. The more readily presented that information is with improvements in UI (like cast bars), the better your gameplay can be while allowing similar situational stuff. ESO doesn't show cast bars for interruptible stuff, so the effects are a little more integrated such that your rotational gameplay can be more complex.
@@AnaseSkyrider i dont really care about rotations or UI , i care about an immersive experience, rpg feeling and a lot of interacting with others. the best combat system means nothing to me if my team just runs through dungeons without saying a word to eachother. (like it is today in WoW)
@@ASIRA89 that is true. I just think that there can be a healthy balance between things -- I don't think that WoW in vanilla had it all figured out, it just had some important things functioning better (like encouraging social interaction outside of arguing in general chat).
LMAO when he was running back to the group, after picking up the heart, I thought, "Man he is being kind of reckless with auto-run" and Preach immediately ran into the lava. XD Ty for this video because I really enjoyed it and it makes he hyped for Classic!
100% agree with preach's tank strat. same way i tanked way back when. if you don't build threat on secondary targets after getting snap aggro on main target, the healer will end up pulling the secondary targets.
Tanking pre-Wrath felt so good, so skillful. Doing it well; doing it efficiently, so the healer didn't blow all their mana on you every fight, and over-aggroing DPS didn't go splat... oh, it was so satisfying. I can't believe they took that away from us. Stance-dancing at just the right moment to intercept and zoom across the fight, scooping up an add... nailing the shield block rotation just right, so your rage usage was optimal... You felt like you were in control, as a tank; that the entire fight was yours to decide and manage. Since Wrath, it feels like you're just vestigial. You're there to get hit. You're gonna get hit, so long as you don't actually afk. You may as well be one of those engineer decoy thingies. As for the slower gameplay... you notice something in this video? It's tactical, but YOU HAVE TIME TO ACTUALLY TYPE WHILE FIGHTING. I don't think people who weren't around back then quite grasp how significant this is, as a social element - I learned to touch-type playing WoW. That's how much talking went on during dungeon runs.
I never knew there were no cast bars in classic, man i laughed so hard when you fell in the lava. i wasnt keen on classic at all and was gunna play it after the fade had dies but i gotta say all the hype is making me want to play it.
It costs so much in classic, it's 20 rage before talents (only 17 is possible), and even at 17 rage it's questionable. Thunderclap seems more like an ability that you hit if you accidentally pulled two groups or got a patrol and were generating enough rage to rage dump. Basically if you can't pay for the ability then the enemy mobs' attack speed doesn't matter, it's not worth saving up for because it generates no threat.
Ragefire Chasm definitely brings back some good memories. Every saturday, me and my brother would do a few runs on our max level taurens and then hand out greenies to low levels in Razor Hill.
Still, it didn't do that much damage even though it hit many targets, plus it decreases their attack speed, meaning you take less damage, leading to less Rage gain.
Honestly my favorite classic spec was AoE prot paladin. Amazing for dungeons as I always tried to avoid the drama of raids. For most situations you can fill DPS, Healer, or Tank for any group without a spec swap, just gotta keep a 2h and mana potions on hand
Thanks for the video. I'm new to warrior tanking in Classic. I was always a caster back in the day, so the basics boiled down like this was helpful. A bit of advice I can offer you, though (the video is over a year old and I'm sure you already know and don't care anymore, but just for anyone else seeing this now) -- there's no good reason to be concerned about needing on "greens" in RFC. All RFC has in Classic are greens; there are no blue drops whatsoever. It is THE loot for the dungeon -- what would you need on if not the greens? It's a little silly to expect people to go through an entire dungeon only using Greed roll options. Even just in general in Classic, many dungeons even higher up with blue drops also have decent green drops that are good to wear. Looking with contempt at someone for needing on a green is purely a retail attitude, where blues and purples are dished out like candy and the perception is that a green is the next thing to gray. It's not that way in Classic -- itemization is much more stingy, and you take what you can get upgrade-wise, when you can get it.
It sure does, as does having lots of patience and good communication. Because you'll be explaining the importance of threat to clueless dps every single pug run.
I was a career tank and by Cata I felt obsolete as anyone could do it and I never played WoW seriously since. Being able to play a real tank again is the biggest reason why I am so keen for Classic. Great video, eagerness intensifies!
Honestly, the way you had to target-swap to maintain aggro and things like that really added so much to the tanking gameplay, it felt good. So does Thunderclapping the entire room every nanosecond, but this has me hyped.
Not getting to complete all your Dungeon Q's? Classic as hell. I don't think I ever collected all the Deviate Scales within a single Wailing Caverns run.
Preach, you have no idea how envious I am. This was my first instance way back in the early days and I was the tank as well. It went about the same really.
This whole classic thing really makes me think. On one hand it looks so boring, just like retail but slower. On the other hand so many people seem to enjoy it, I really doubt all of them are just faking it for shit & giggles.
It's an actual RPG. Mobs are dangerous, you have to work together, quests aren't on your map so you actually read through the log, no mass teleports so you have to run everywhere and actually see people, professions are useful and much more.
It wasn’t a spastic run, you had to actually think and control your actions to help the group. Modern wow is fairly mindless, back in classic it was actually rewarding to tank as you had to do the job well, now you just get hauled along as dps pulls and you have to fix what idiots screw up so they don’t yell at you for tanking badly. Much happier taking time to go through a dungeon and take time with friends that check of a daily in 20 minutes with lfg.
What I remember from tanking as a undead warrior from classic is each weapon has its own weapon speed a one handed sword will swing faster then a one handed axe yes the 1h axe will do a bit more damage but how ever having a 1h sword means the tank will swing his weapon faster the more the tank hits the mob the more threat the tank generates using heroic strike timed just right a good proc tank does not have rely on his taunt for one reason he swings his 1h sword faster. The next thing a proc tank needs is good DR defense rating and dodge if the mob cant hit you then you take no damage. Tanking in classic was so simple the threat enchant for gloves didn't come about until BC so tanks wont be able to get threat from enchanting gloves use a weapon chain and a shield spike on your shield the shield spike works great to generate threat too weapon chains don't allow you to be disarmed.
Great video that made me remember some good times in RFC. That said the entire video something was bugging me until the end when I realized. Moon is Sheep, X is Sap. 😀
jesus classic look good, i was not hype for it until i saw ppl streaming and shit and the memory and nostalgia kick in ALL the rpg element are back in the game!!
Something that i do when tanking in vanilla is that I keybind my dps and tanking weapons. So when it is only like 1-2 mobs I tank with a two hander (or dual wield after 20) to build rage much faster and generate more threat. But I can switch to my 1h and shield quickly if needed for more damage intense fights or if healer is low on mana :)
With an MMO mouse, I can keybind literally everything. 12*3 buttons. Plus some extras, like the Z key for mobility. Some specs on live have rotations and extra buttons that don't fit the normal formatting of my binding scheme, like Arms Warrior, so having the 10-12 buttons free is nice. Before that, I had mobility in those three buttons, but that caused issues with some specs, which is why I have mobility bound separate now, and is why I don't have a bunch of shit on the WASD cluster. My shift mod is used for CC and threat -- shift 1 for interrupt, shift 7 for class anti-cc (ex. Berserker Rage), shift 10 for taunt -- and my Ctrl mod is used for buffs and other cooldowns -- Ctrl 1-3 for damage, Ctrl 4-6 for defense, Ctrl 7-9 for dps-spec heals (Victory Rush, Flash of Light), and Ctrl 10-12 for extras like emergency ally shields (ex Life Cocoon) or other buffs or bRezes.
"The gameplay is the worst. The gameplay is so much better" Sub count and general public reception says otherwise. The fact people are more excited to be auto attacking boars than they're excited for 8.2 says a LOT about how bad retail is right now in terms of class design.
Well let's not change facts around. Gameplay is not the thing most people come back for. It's more than anything for the rpg aspects this game has lost over time. I don't think anything can beat MoP in gameplay although legion got close in some cases.
Thanks for this, I've always played DPS, mostly warlock and now in classic I've decided to try other roles. Leveling a Tauren warrior and tonight tried tanking for the second time ever, getting totally frustrated by not having any rage and not being able to hold aggro, so I found a link to your vid and think i just had a gat dayum epiphany, sunder...sunder...sunder!! I never knew about threat cap till this video either.
So excited for Classic. Great to see your video of this, since you are a knowledgeable player who isn't just doing stuff to entertain like some of the other streamers. Keep up the good work, Preach! Also, I was curious, a lot of the other streamers are saying things are hitting less than in vanilla (read: private servers) and things like that, what's your opinion? Did they do a good job capturing how things were back in Vanilla since you played then? I almost do wish they had gone with TBC instead of classic though; TBC seems like it fixed all the bugs that Classic had while keeping a lot of the flavor.
@27.06 Recall season 1 in Breaking bad? When Walt get his "high" in the car after blowing Tuco's office up? That moment occured right here. Again. Classic just does something with the body. Sooo rewarding.
Recently had my first tanking experience in classic in Deadmines. For some reason I just couldn't keep aggro. Watching this video again to see where I went wrong, only to discover that it was probably the hunter's constant multi shots and the mage's arcane explosions. I don't think they got the memo that tanks have to hit first :p

After long periods of feeling weak you eventually hit that point where you feel very strong, and it is that much more awesome because you've struggled through those weaker periods. More classic please Mike!
In classic you're a boring dude doing heroic things. On live you're a hero doing boring things.
Every streamer playing classic looks pretty damn happy, mike included. Weapon skill ffs
Because classic is an mmorpg. Modern mmo's are just a single player game with group finder
@@sarielheavensborne9921 All modern mmo's are the same. They all have cashshops, they all have group finder. Vanilla WoW is a fantastic game and i honestly can't wait, i'm so fed up with modern mmo's
@@soad4verr Exactly. Been trying ESO lately, and it has its moments... but it's just a single player game, with some multiplayer features. Hell, the first dungeon I ran in ESO? I didn't realise it was a dungeon. I solo'd it, because I genuinely hadn't noticed it was a dungeon.
@@NicholasBrakespear Eso is as soul less as any else mmo's. They are all running around with their shiny mount they bought from the cash shop. In Vanilla Wow every single thing you get is earned, how it's supposed to be.
Preach, you honestly should do some classic raiding guides once Classic goes live. This is great stuff to watch.
I highly suspect he won’t miss out on that
There's nothing to do guides about, bosses have like 1 mechanic and classes 1 button rotations
5:58 - 12 years of tanking sounds like the next best drama film of 2019.
Bruh, when I saw you fall at the end.
OH Vibe is in your group. Hes on the SC2 players I used to watch. I also ran a Cathedral M+ with him back in Legion.
That's what I miss. This guy handing the tank an armor potion, the mage making food. This other guy found a scroll of spirit to put on the healer. Stuff like that is so simple but feels so good.
People forgot that this game was all about cooperation. If you don't help each other you won't succeed!
first green drop hunter gets it , so it begins ........ #HunterWeapon feelsgoodman
Every weapon is a Hunter Weapon.
I don't think the gameplay is bad at all. This is the kind of gameplay that I loved back in the day. TBC life was so good.
What? He had 1 button to press and almost never had any rage to use it. Lol. Amazing gameplay...
Stuff like that is only reasonably doable with simple rotations and gameplay, though.
@@AnaseSkyrider well then it seems simpler is better
Great watch.
I'm guessing Wailing Caverns are next, or are you jumping straight to the glory that is Shadowfang Keep?
The fact that you communicated so much during the corpse run is one of the reasons why classic is amazing.
Thunderclap was used for the debuff to reduce your damage intake my man.
Class guides for classic from preach again pogchamp
Spam your 1 attack/spell. Unless you are oom then you wand. ;)
@@Leopoldshark well that's just the mages and paladins.
I still remember all the dungeons and zones as they were in vanilla, I did the bulk of my playing back then. Cata never happened in my mind.
5:10 Thunder Clap also has no added threat component, so the threat it produces is solely based on the damage it deals, unlike Sunder for example
Ragefire Chasm definitely brings back some good memories. Every saturday, me and my brother would do a few runs on our max level taurens and then hand out greenies to low levels in Razor Hill.
For me the biggest problem for Thunderclap is that you can't use it in Defensive Stance.
Still, it didn't do that much damage even though it hit many targets, plus it decreases their attack speed, meaning you take less damage, leading to less Rage gain.
Guess it's hard to notice because you're playing well but I think the reason low level gameplay is still engaging is that it could go wrong fast
Honestly my favorite classic spec was AoE prot paladin. Amazing for dungeons as I always tried to avoid the drama of raids. For most situations you can fill DPS, Healer, or Tank for any group without a spec swap, just gotta keep a 2h and mana potions on hand
As a dedicated dungeon dps'er I just want to say thank you for your service. Good pally tanks are the best tanks.
@@vivekagronlund1362
It's just so engaging. Everything is balanced on a tightrope and stuff could go horribly wrong with one bad pull. Love this.

I love how threat matters in vanilla & BC. Might go tank exactly because of this.
I love the excitement over bandaging in between mobs. lol!
For some reason Preach carefully explaining how to tank in Classic reminds me of Gordon Ramsay explaining how to cook.
Few things for next time Preach; Battle Shout does good AoE agro, and Thunder Clap is a damage reducing ability, it reduces attack speed.
On the other hand so many people seem to enjoy it, I really doubt all of them are just faking it for shit & giggles.
it's just a more immersive experience, despite all the rough edges that come with it being an older version of the game.
I'm getting such a nostalgia shock from just hearing the bow creak from the hunter.
Whats a good tree to run as a main tank leveling in classic? Can I get away with not speccing into prot? Let me know, thanks!
I'm absolutely delighted you're having fun with Classic! I think a lot of us just figured you might not play at all xD
The gameplay is so much better"
Sub count and general public reception says otherwise.
I'm gonna be a bear tank in Classic if they release it with the latest balance patch because by the end of Vanilla bear tanks were pretty good.
