Great takes by Chuck and Kenny. Another point that they didn't mention is that to be VALUABLE to your team, you have to play a lot of games. A guy being 95% as good as another guy, but playing 20% more games, is probably more valuable to his team. It's called the Most VALUABLE Player after all.
Also, per-game averages and performance go up if you play fewer games as you get more rest between games. So there's that too.

I don't know why this point isn't brought up more often. A player's value to the team goes down the less games they play. That is an indisputable truth. They essentially put up zeros across the board when they're sitting on the sidelines. When considering awards, they should start figuring averages based on 82 games. Otherwise, it benefits the guys who only play easy teams on the road, or take days off then they think their numbers will dip. The players who are out there night in and night out should be the ones rewarded.

agreed the rule makes sense for awards, however for all nba and all defense selections it isnt fair, historically guys made that team with games played of 55 or 60. so the question is do we now go and rewrite history and take away the greats all nba selections? i think not, and histoically guys do not win mvp or defensive player with alot of missed games. this was a sneaky rule that has you guys looking at big awards when that was never the problem, the all nba selections are the biggest thing this is effecting

I am so glad to hear these guys talk about the fans. I grew up in a middle class family in the New England area. One year, my dad got my tickets to go see the Celtics play. Now, my family wasn't poor by any means, but we weren't so wealthy that we could afford to go down to Boston night after night, spending money on gas/food/parking/etc to watch the Celtics. Those tickets were one of the best birthday presents ever because I got to go and see a young Paul Pierce play. I fell in love with the sport and with the Celtics and my dad and I still talk about that game. This is the thing about professional sports. To players, it might seem like just 'one more game', but for fans that can be a special moment, a special memory between a father and son. I think this is what some players (once again, not all but some) lose sight of.

I tell them to use these wisely as they all come from the same pool. If a student was lazy early in the semester then has a serious reason to miss classes already used their drops: they aren't awarded more because their laziness came befoee their planning. I make this comparison to counter Shaq's point. These players are given time to miss for serious injury and still get awards. Those who rest to sit out are knowingly chipping away at those days and not taking into account freak injuries happen. For MVP it definitely should be a minimum of 65 games because if your team can play without you for 20 or more games, then it proves you AREN'T THAT VALUABLE! As for the individual statistic races, I like Gilbert Arenas' idea that you do it on TOTAL numbers divided by 82. So if you take off 20 games, you'll have to average 10 points a game more than everyone else to still get the most. You don't need to put a game limit on it and as a result, someone could win with 25ppg if they play 82.
But the players need to stop whining. If you take 20 games off, you don't have to deal with the exhaustion someone playing every night has to overcome. So it's being unfair to the guys playing every day if your averages are higher because you're only playing 75% of the time and resting all the other games. Then you could take the night off every time you're scheduled against a tough defensive team and cruise to an individual award (plus get your big contract bonus).

@@SDesWriter I'm curious if this impact also statistical leadership like say scoring. Every past leader played around at least 80% of available games. 1948 only had 48 games, while 1999 was a shortened 50 games. 2012 was also a shortened 66 games and 2020 having 72 games. For Embiid's case, unless he heals remarkably fast and plays around 55 games for the season, he should be disqualified as scoring leader average wise. Bernard King in 1985 led NBA with 32.9 points and played just 55 games. Embiid is notching 35.3 points but only played 34 games thus far. Rumors are he's likely out for the season. Luka with his 34.6 points is poised to play around 60-65 games for the season, should be the true scoring leader at this point.

@@mr.sinjin-smyth I think Luka will play significantly more than that. If he doesn't then SGA will get the title and deserve it because people shouldn't be getting the awards when they don't play enough games to go through the hardships of the season

Since being drafted, (as of Jan 16 2024) Embiid has only played in 55.7% of Philadelphia's games. He was drafted the same year as Jokic. Embiid has played 422 games, Jokic has played 645 games. They're the same height. The same weight. Size is not a valid excuse to miss just as many games as you play. One has a ring. One has lost in the 2nd round 5 times.. Embiid is an average player that stat pads against bad teams, sits out against good teams, and then sits out the rest of the year. These facts have been consistent throughout his career.

This is honestly the BEST situation Ever for Embiid and the sixers now he gets to sit down until the playoffs he will probably be ready around the beginning of April to get the rust off. He’ll be hot for the playoffs and they’ll go far this year. Nobody beating Boston though. Boston is stacked 🤦🏿‍♂️

I was at the game!! And it got so quiet! Everyone was just talking about how we hoped he was okay including all the warrior fans. Poor kuminga must feel horrible, and he was just trying to play hard, i mean embid pushed him to the ground 5-10 minutes earlier. I think it was a rough game and he shoulda sat way earlier. I wish the coach pulled him when we all saw him moving bad, like 5 min into the game!

Ernie actually gave a reasonable compromise! Not eligible for awards or 1st team is under 65. But allowed 2nd or 3rd team. It allows players to get their supermax even if they were hurt in a contract year.
