- Nickelodeon made quite a few different attempts to compete with Disney in the music arena. One of the lesser known ones is a little film called School Gyrls. In today's video we will be finding out if it's an underrated gem or a rightfully deserved flop.

A couple things to note about this video:
I was supposed to talk about a couple other things in regards to the group but I edited the second half of the video while sick and I really just wanted to get the video out. They're really small points though so I'm gonna put em in here
1. Jacque dated Justin Bieber a couple years after School Gyrls dropped and they met on the set of this movie.
2. They made a sequel but it's basically lost media. Thankfully.
You should do one on disneys “best friends whenever” I never see anyone talk about it, it had such a unique concept at the time.

I remember I was such a huge fan, didn’t have memory of it til this video I watched both movies every week until it got deleted, I remember knowing it only aired like a couple times and never again, I remember the sequel like yesterday though 😂 was a bit better

I have to agree. I mean, why not try looking at this movie through the perspective of those who made the movie and the targeted audience of that year? There's no need to be rude and callous about it because it doesn't follow today's teen movies standards and tropes.

I think the dialogue between the Gyrls is not necessarily bad, I mean not the best, but it could be at least fine if Nick Cannon didn't try to force a Blaccent on people who clearly don't speak it. Gosh it's so insensitive to my ears.

I found out about this group when I first heard that K-Pop girl group Wonder Girls were going to star in a Nickelodeon movie with a rival girl group called School Gyrls. Like a lot of K-Pop fans did, I immediately searched up School Gyrls but instead of judging them I was immediately won over when I saw their video for "Something Like A Party." To this day, is probably one of my Top 10 most played songs in my entire music library
yessss I got into kpop and the School Gyrls seperately and then their collab brought it all together, honestly their songs slapped it was just the management.

Wonder girls was my second K-pop act after BoA because I ended up watching “Eat You Up” on MTV somehow and the same thing happened because I watched School Gyrls and Wonder Girls compete in The Wonder Girls Movie. Amazing how this rabbit hole started back in 2009 😂

I actually went to school with Mandy (the blonde one). We had a couple classes together and I'd sometimes talk to her during breaks or lunch both 8th grade and freshman year. She was always really nice. Lol, I even remember her telling a substitute teacher that she was leaving early one day for something and that she was "dropping out of school anyway". This was a year before this aired.
I'd hear or see her on occasion when she was back in town. She'd bring up any new songs that were coming out, which I actually listened to and liked but I know other people got annoyed with her promoting it lol.

I remember when School Gyrls came out and I ate that ish up. Then they had that Christmas sequel that premiered the end of 2010 and like Mr.Nostalgia said it’s lost media. I haven’t seen that movie since 2011 or 2012 because they use to play reruns of it during the holiday season. Also, that is the little sister from Just Jordan who’s the headmasters daughter 🤣💜

Fun fact: popularkpop group Wonder Girls back in the day had their own Nickelodeon movie. The School Gyrls appeared in the movie. Not only that, but they made a song together. Thus, not only is legendary kpop group Wonder Girls canonical to the School Gyrls lore, but the School Gyrls, which are pretty much unknown, are part of their discography. Not to mention, if you watch the music video for their collab song, you can see some of the School Gyrls are different. So yeah, that’s something.

I loved School Gyrls when I was a kid omg. I still listen to Something Like A Party religiously (I even learned the dance for the contest they were holding all those years ago lol) and sometimes I'll randomly sing the Going to the Mall song from the Christmas movie they did.
On a related note, does anyone remember when the K-Pop group Wonder Girls had their own Nick movie (might have gotten plopped onto TeenNick but idr)? I thought it was a fever dream tbh because the day it aired I had practice and couldn't watch it and I think they just never aired it again 💀, but I was relieved when clips of it (mainly the goofy af parts involving their company's founder J. Y. Park - who's currently having another go at US expansion (well after the Wonder Girls attempt didn't exactly work out) with a competition show A2K btw) started going semi-viral on K-Pop spam page Instagram and reaffirmed my memories of its existence 😌 They even have a song with School Gyrls called The DJ Is Mine, a whole Brandy x Monica-type beat haha.

To add to your note I remember that the wonder girls were the opening act for the Jonas brothers tour in 2009/2010. Thirteen year old me was not a fan of K-pop at the time,so i wasn’t that interested in the wonder girls.
I seriously doubt Nickelodeon had any faith in a majority of their made for TV movies (not just this particular one), and I could see why. It's just simply not their M.O., most of what they air are TV shows and it's been like that for years. It's only once in a blue moon that Nick ever even airs movies *at all* on the network
School Gyrls has a sequel called “A Very School Gyrls Holla-Day” It was a Christmas special that introduced 2 new members. I saw School Gyrls as it aired but missed out on the Christmas special so for awhile I thought I imagined the 2nd movie until I googled it

Speaking of obscure musical acts, There's a pop rock band called Allstar Weekend that were contestants for Radio Disney's N.B.T., Performed on an episode of Sunny with a Chance, and just dipped. They had a solid fanbase, and some good songs, but I haven't seen or heard anyone mention them.
I looked them up a couple months ago and I think one of them is married now
I think they disbanded and renamed or something. It was hard for them to be taken seriously due to the minor Disney affiliation when it came to them entering the pop punk genre / scene.

Those bands were established away from those kinds of networks prior so it wasn’t like they were coming into recognition completely from a network. All star weekend was legit 100% a radio Disney band and they got popular for that. They didn’t really have like a solid fan base before being on that contest show. They remind me of a junior all time low so it’s a shame they couldn’t make it bigger

They come off as wholesome, almost youth group type guys who just wanna make some fun, upbeat music. The Claire girl is played by Jessica Jarrell who was also teen singer at the time. Man I miss that era. The headmistress is also played by the r&b singer Angie Stone. There were so many “famous” people in this movie.

I'd give this a 3/10 at best. In hindsight, it was a bit cringe, yet at some spots it was emotionally traumatic.
I never heard of the School Gyrls movie before watching this video. It appears the short film also got a 1/10 rating on IMDB and three people wrote a review about it. One person gave it a 4/10 saying it's best for teens 14 and under. This was posted back in 2015. The only way I know about this group was through the Wonder Girls special that aired on Teen Nick back in early 2012. In the special, the School Gyrls were in a competition against the Wonder Girls who went by the name Asian Invasion since they come from South Korea. The School Gyrls won by default because the Wonder Girls only got into the competition for the wrong reasons and forfeited their trophy. I think that was the plot. I only watched it once. 🤔 Since then, both groups have disbanded. Last I check some members of the Wonder Girls are married and have children. Monica Parales from the School Gyrls was in some episodes of Everybody Hates Chris prior to this short film.

I don't really follow many K-pop acts, but I know Korean music, TV shows and movies are popular outside of South Korea even in western countries like the US.
@@roxassora2706 Yeah, they did. Korean music exploded in popularity in the US, other western countries in addition to many Asian countries by the late '00s. When Teen Nick aired this Wonder Girls special in the early 2010s, K-pop and Korean media was at its highest peak and the Korean wave is still going strong today. Of course, the special, from what I remember was done entirely in English.

You probably missed out on School Gyrls because Nick Cannon was the host of TeenNick at the time and since this was his project all of the ads and promotion went to the TeenNick channel, not the main Nick channel. Like TeenNick made the School Gyrls seem like a bigger deal than they were to my kid brain. It's the same with the movie they made for the kpop group Wonder Girls, most of the promo was on TeenNick instead of the main Nick channel.

I remember when nickelodeon (specifically teen nick) had that era where Nick Cannon was just EVERYWHERE. My sisters and I watched the premiere of the movie and the christmas “holla-day” special but then after that, I don’t think they ever replayed then as much to the point where I thought I imagined the whole thing. School Gyrls was fun at the time, def nothing groundbreaking, but they had the potential to be something great imo.

This movie is HOT GARBAGE! I vaguely remember hearing about it when I was younger but never watched it at the time... I already knew from the title and the way the 3 of them looked it was gonna only be downhill from there. Especially Jacque/her character...like the whole time I was yelling the same things about all of them, like, "Why are they talking/moving/looking like that?" Were they told, "Say it more URBAN!" (Black), or something? It's BEYOND PAINFUL. the mean girl was annoying too, but still...
I'm mostly shocked about Angie Stone in this movie, she can do so much better 😭 like I saw her and was almost hurt

there was this show on teen nick and it was kind of like bad girls club but the clean version it was called queen bees it had one season it was a mess and there was this other show i believe was on there to it was called miracles boys and it was also cancelled after 1 season but i liked it very underrated but i miss when teen nick had its own shows like degrassi and teen nick top 10 and a bunch of teen drama shows and now its just channel where they show re runs all day its pretty sad

Nah you really are Mr Nostalgia cus I deleted so many things from my memory and you brought them back. i’m so glad you made this video. no one ever remembers this when i talk about it, even the person who made me watch it in the first place. i honestly began to think i dreamt it for a few years until i rewatched the wonder girls video for the DJ is mine and saw the school gyrls there 😭
EDIT: Mandy and Jacque are NOT in the music video at all😭 apparently the group line up changed a few times, and by the time they collabed with the wonder girls the only members featured were Monica, and two newer* members Natalie and Briana
There was also a Christmas special, and Nick Cannon produced a movie for the Kpop group Wonder Girls which featured the School Gyrls as their rivals. Admittedly, the Wonder Girls movie had their best music. There were also some line up changes. The group added rapper Sade and a singer, Lauren for the Christmas movie. Nick Cannon tried to push them as a legitimate music group for a bit, but Mandy and Jacqui left and were replaced by Natalie and Rae. The Wonder Girls movie was their last chance for relevance, but it failed. Rae left the group, leaving them as a quartet. They tried to rebrand as "4ever," but they broke up before any music was released with their new name.

I'd take this 10× over the new Kim possible movie, monster high movie, the entire after series, the 365 days series, cuties, the 50 shades series, most Noah centineo movies, the kissing both series, that disrespectfullly terrible Netflix Winx show and any of the terrible cartoon network remakes.
“I’m not just a girl” was my ringtone FOREVER and I don’t even remember liking this movie
I straight up might rewrite this movie one day, because imagine if the school was still very strict to the point of stifling people's creativity, but similar to the Ariel's Beginning movie, there's an underground club kind of thing where people can perform and stuff, and that's where the stunt party/talent show is held every year. And then Bambi, who apparently has an issue with her boyfriend being a musician, goes out of her way to get the stunt party and the club shut down, so now, the School Gyrls decide they're going to do something so the party can still happen, whether that be finding a new venue, getting the students who want to be able to express themselves to protest against the school in some way, or really anything else. Idk, there's ways you can go with this story that I think would be fun to work with.

I remember seeing them at the Crenshaw mall doing a Christmas music video in the middle of the summer when I was 12. I thought it was so weird they chose to film at a hood mall

The Little Facts That I Can Remember Is That Monica Also Came From A Show Called Jammx Kids With Alison Stoner. They Even Made A Music Video With Shaq. It Should Be On UA-cam Somewhere Cause I Watched That Show As A Kid. That Girl That Helped Them With The Paper,Her Name Is Jessica Jarrell Who Also Has A Song With Justin Bieber (Some Might Already Know What That Song Is) But She Has A Couple Songs I Like From Her Too.
So since no one’s mentioning it, I guess I will… The biggest fail of this movie is that it was marketed for an urban audience (clearly) yet didn’t have a black girl in the group. They were trying way too hard to be Cheetah girls. Especially with the group name in the sky as the fireworks at the end of the movie. I remember when this came out and hated it at the time 😝

Nickelodeon now has another girl group in the Good NEWZ Girls, which they formed in late 2021.
i loved school gyrls when i was in middle school omg. their song party bag was always playing on my mp3 player. and their movie crossover with the wonder girls was also one of my first exposures to kpop before i even knew what kpop was lol
The only time I ever heard of School Gyrls was when they did a crossover with Archie from Archie Comics. And at that time, I understood it that the group got their start on America’s Got Talent, and only until now I was made aware of this movie.
I remember as a kid i thought the main girl in "Angus, Thongs, and perfect snogging" was named "Angus Thong" because i never actually saw the movie lmao.
This movie is probably one of the worst examples of somebody’s parent trying to make something “cool for the kids”. It tries so hard to do that, but in the most cringeworthy way possible. All tho their song Something Like a Party is an absolute bop.

My parents never had cable so I wasn't an avid Nickelodeon/Disney watcher, but funny enough, I found out about School Gyrls through spotify. Their song "Detention" was just so fun to listen to and very reminiscent of the time they debuted. I was so sad they only had a couple songs out because I genuinely loved their sound.

I was such a hardcore fan of these girls and had their first album in physical. The funny thing about this group is the line up changes were fucking insane. Literally they added two girls in the second movie... who do not sing in any of the songs minus 1. Then Mandy and Jacque left. They collabed for another movie with Wonder girls but they added two more members who were back up members. Then a girl left after the Wonder Girls movie and then they tried to rebrand to FOREVER and then disbanded before the single could come out bc they lost Monica who was the only one from debut who stayed till the very end.
But the music was AMAZING
i only know who these girls are thanks to that awful nickelodeon wonder girls movie where they are racist to the wonder girls and then at the end the asian member says "hey guys let's be nice to them, don't forget i'm filipino 💁🏻♀️" lol
I loved the School Gyrls. I saw them perform at a mall and met Nick Canon. Then they started adding random girls that did not fit the vibe. Then they changed their name and style which annoyed me and I lost interest
