A lot of people are confused about the title of the song and why she named it "8th grade"...As a very loyal MC fan I read every article about her and look at or read every interview, been doing that since her Butterfly days...She explains the title and its deeper than you'd ever think...She started by saying "This is not a good song"....When she was in 8th grade it was the lowest point in her entire life. She was picked on and teased bc of her clothes and liked boys that didn't like her back...She grew up in white and black neighborhoods and seeing as though she's biracial and she never felt like she felt in... She said in the white neighborhood her mom wouldn't spend a lot of money on clothes and someone told her she had a 3 shirt day recycle...When she was writing this song it gave her that same low feeling she went through when she was in 8th grade...So the song title is more about a feeling she had at a low point in her life that gave her the same feeling she felt when writing this song and not directly about the lyrics. I hope I made it clear for people to understand....I love you Mariah. This was my 2nd favorite song on the album but after finding out what the song title meant it means a lot more to me than just a song.

We’re not gonna hear Mariah on the radio again unless she makes more songs similar to her 2000s songs. The music promotion era kinda stopped fuckin with her after Obsessed. Now, I feel like her fans are the only group of folks helping to keep her going. Mariah is doing music she feels is true to her without having to write another radio hit single. She must feel like she doesn’t have to do that anymore, which makes perfect sense. The woman’s been workin’ that industry hard since ‘89/‘90. I appreciate everything from Mariah but I just gave up hope that we’d ever hear a radio hit from her again. I’ll always be buying her albums and helping to keep her relevant. She’s one of the 90s longest surviving acts to still be doing big things!!
