O I'm a Steely Dan guy. But De La Soul was one of my favorite Hip Hop groups. "Eye Know" is a great tune. The whistling sample is from an Otis Redding tune. Who's my favorite vocalist of all time. And the drum beat is from "Get Out My Life Woman", written and produced by the late great Allen Toussaint. Maybe my favorite producer of all time. So "Eye Know" just hits me deep in my soul. Love that tune.
There is a song on Robben Ford Album “ Talk To Your Daughter” named “ HelpThe Poor” Which has a great “ Billy Jean “ type intro. Check it out ! BTW, Ford is an incredible guitar player solo on “Help The Poor is pure hot blues !
Steely Dan is a rabbit hole 6 miles deep....and every inch is glorious. It consists of 2 central characters, Donald Fagan and Walter Becker; they wrote all the music, Fagan did all the lead vocals. They were almost OCD artists, never compromised in creating exactly what they heard in their heads. As a result they would audition one top notch studio musician after another to get the perfect match on a given part of a song. Guitarists, bassists, drummers, vocals, horns, everything. For the guitar solo in Peg they tried 7 different players, all top session men, including Larry Carlton, who worked on a number of their songs, until they settled on Jay Graydon's version. They tried 3 different drummers, including Jim Keltner, for the title cut of the Aja album before settling on Steve Gadd. His solo on that track is legendary

I still have the Aja album I purchased in September 1977 at age 22. I consider it one of the greatest albums of all time. The documentary on the making of this album is great and is/was available on YT.
Steely Dan arranged the most sophisticated music to ever hit the airwaves. They used the most skilled musicians alive. They would often replace the entire group of musicians if the sound they were looking for on a particular tune. They'd spend more time recording one song than most bands would spend on an album. You should react to songs from the album Aja. Here is a link to an incredible look behind the scenes and in to the lives of the people who created this music. They break down tracks of their songs and you hear things you never knew were there. ua-cam.com/video/vjRisxOHAE4/v-deo.html
You should run run run to react to FM by Steely Dan! Only the tip of the iceberg with these fellas. Just straight up genius! Walter Becker passed a couple of years ago. Donald Fagen (he sings and plays keys) is now 70! Still playing!
At the time of this recording, LA was the capital of the music industry. The best producers and recording studios on the planet. Fagen and Becker had the 'cream of the cream' musicians at their disposal. All these years later, audiophiles test our sound systems with the 'Aja' LP. I recommend the documentary of the recording. Two NY dudes in LA!!!
this was by far their biggest album 1977 sold 4 million copies in the US, they started out rock but with "Katy Lied " album , they started to move toward jazz. check out the song "Katy lied"
They began as an easy rock band, their style developed album by album. You can hear the jazz influence growing over time. And yet, every album is great, there are none where you might say, yes, they got better than this. I love the jazz influence, I love just as much the early rock sound. You are right, I grew up with Stealy Dan and I have never heard Dylan Soul? Play it for us!
By the way, the backing vocals are Michael macdonald from doobie brothers fame...steely dan is essentially a studio musician band, the best . In the late 70s there was blue eyes soul, white man soul i guess where you had the jazz pop feel with great hooks
I like a song that Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen did in 1982 as a solo artist. It was called "I.G.Y" (International Geophysical Year) and it was from his solo album "The Night Fly" and the album was based on his growing up in the 1950s. I.G.Y.(International Geophysical Year). This song was from Donald Fagen's 1982 album "The Nightfly" and it was based on his growing up in the 1950s. The Year 1955 was classified as the International Geophysical Year which lasted from July 1,1957 to December 31, 1958.This period of time refers to an international science project that was going on at the time. "Peg" is my favorite Steely Dan song my second favorite being "FM" from the movie of the same name that was released in 1977.
By the time of this album Steely Dan were in effect a duo (Donald Fagen & Fagen) who employed the crème de la crème of session musicians. Drummer Rick Marotta (who plays on this track) described their process like doing musical chairs where they switch out musicians for certain songs. And they even switched out whole bands until they found the right fit for the song. BTW, I do know De La Soul and when I heard that sample I recognised it as being Steely Dan.
Excellent reaction!!! You are so right about them not being a "Rock" band. I have the Steely Dan DVD of the Making of their Aja album which contains "Peg" and other hits of theirs. On the DVD, the founding members, Donald Fagan & Walter Becker get together in the studio where the album was recorded, along with the session musicians and sound engineers that contributed to the album. They go over components of the song and the musician talks about their contribution. Donald and Walter would sometime bring in more than one musician to play a part until they heard exactly what they were looking/listening for. They mentioned how they tried 5, 6, 7 or 8 guitarists to find the right solo on "Peg," and it was worth waiting for!!! Michael McDonald (lead singer for The Doobie Brothers) also talks about how challenging it was to layer his vocals, getting the right combination of harmonies, vibrato, pronunciation, and phrasing!!! Here's the "Peg" portion of the DVD: ua-cam.com/video/waIBA6_0GQc/v-deo.html

And they even switched out whole bands until they found the right fit for the song.
BTW, I do know De La Soul and when I heard that sample I recognised it as being Steely Dan.
They are an entity upon themselves
