    I so appreciate your posts. I have a 5 year old granddaughter who ran out of a restaurant with our large family seated around. Out of nowhere she bolted out the door and ran right into the street. We were all so relieved that even though it was in the center of our small city, no car was going by at that moment. I am learning something new with each of your posts, thank you so much.

    Fantastic video and such helpful time and advise. Many years ago I had a friend who’s 4 year old had ADHD, he regularly escaped, he was able to get through most locks, even really high up ones that his family had put on the front door, he’d escape mostly at night, we tired all kinds of things but in the end my friend had to lock his bedroom door from the outside at night, she felt awful about it, it sounded so drastic, but I kept reassuring her she was doing the right thing. He had no sense of danger and they lived on a main road. She would have been so comforted by what you shared to know she wasn’t alone, however this little boy is now a young man and doing much better. I’m so glad you found Ezra and he was safe. Bless you.

      Yep. I had to put an alarm on my autistic children's bedroom doors so we were woken up in the night. It felt terrible, but I needed them to be safe. We had to lock the fridge and cabinets too or they would eat everything planned for future meals! 😢

    Both my older brother and I escaped the house a lot when we were little except when I ran away I was usually heading for a playground and my running away stopped when I was quite young, I don’t know if my brother had a location a lot of the time but he would often run away even when he was a teenager. His autism is way more severe than mine.

    I AM A NEW FAN!!
    Glide lock has helped us so much with our daughter. Her first escape happened the first week of this summer and it was very similar to your sweet boy Ezra’s escape…involving great neighbors and super cops!! Gone 10 minutes and I was beside myself. It helps to have a team around you and I learned so much on how to prevent it or prepare for it going forward. Our kiddos are smart and I learn from my sweet Addison daily. Glide lock seemed very universal and helpful for my husband and I because we are able to access the lock on BOTH sides of the door. Thank you for this video because I have NOW taken on ur second tip and registered my daughter with our local police station. Keep being the inspiration we all need as parents and encouraging us to seek help and have comfort in knowing that we aren’t alone.

    I forget where I saw this online but I read in a blog a while back that if a parent has a child who is on the spectrum and not really toilet trained yet but is far enough along training-wise to go to a particular room to “do his (or her) thing” (as it were) that some parents find it helpful to put a webcam (or a security camera) of some kind in that room so that the parent can give him or her enough privacy to do what needs to be done while also making sure that he or she does not wander off during that time.

    My parents didn’t talk to the neighbors all that much because they thought that my sister and I acted in ways that were embarrassing to them and (as they put it) “people will talk”.
    One day when one of my neighbor’s kids wandered/eloped during the toddler years (before age four, I think) my mother actually met one of the neighbors because he wandered into either my parents’s yard or the woods behind our house. It was either Summer or Fall and he just had a Pampers diaper on. Apparently his mother fell asleep just after changing him and turning on the TV.
    I don’t actually know if he’s autistic but he might be because even at age eight or nine (second or third grade) he was only able to talk enough for basic communication and he finished his daytime toilet training at age nine when he was in third grade shortly before going into fourth grade. This was back in the 1980s. He was in regular classes and he was able to get by but just barely. I remember that he was about a C or D student in terms of what his letter grade would have been if my Elementary School used letter grades.
    My mother was always on the lookout for him when she was outside raking the leaves and doing other chores because he would often wander either into our yard or into the woods behind our house. For some reason his mother didn’t worry because we lived in a fairly quiet neighborhood and he eventually either came back on his own or someone always brought him back like my mother did. My mother probably had to bring him back to his mother’s house at least three or four times (at least two of those times were when he was a toddler, the rest were when he was about five, six or seven).

    When I learned my full name and address I was in kindergarten at age five just before turning six. From what I remember my neighbor’s kid who had a tendency to wander off was more like seven when he could do this. In terms of where he was verbally at that point in time he was more verbal than Ezra is (he knew maybe a dozen or maybe two dozen words by that point) but less verbal than Simon most of the time.

    When I was in kindergarten back in 1981 to 1982 it was common for the kids in my class to have a name tag saying something like “Hello my name is (full name goes here) I am a kindergarten student at (name of school goes here).

    My sister also liked the excitement of escaping when she was around Ezra’s age (and she would often laugh/giggle when she escaped). That is why on trips to the mall and to the grocery store she needed to be on the late 1970s version of a toddler leash (which was pretty much like a bracelet or an arm band) more often than I needed to be.
    Apparently this is not always a function of a specific autism level because I was level two growing up (I’m currently level one.) and yet my sister (who has always been level one) needed a toddler leash more often than I did because she had more of a tendency to wander off. She may still have more of a tendency in this direction than I realize but since she no longer acts on it I don’t actually know.
    By the way, while I didn’t try wander off or or bolt all that often after the toddler years I remember quite a bit about being drawn to the sounds of running water and the sound of wind blowing through the trees especially in the woods behind my parents house (which sometimes sounded sort of like running water (especially during the Fall months when the leaves were coming off of the Maple or Oak trees).
    I didn’t need a toddler leash all that often but if I was in a new place with the sound of running water or a lot of traffic (which could also sort of sound like the sound of running water or like white noise) I would sometimes be drawn to that and need one from time to time.

    To me, I thought the truth is also used for empathy, and calm things down. I think telling the truth is sometimes I need to be honest, as attention. Not hurting anyone's feelings or else. I was never into political agendas. Since I'm apolitical and apathetic to fit into politics. I consider myself as a volunteer and cooperative person. I refuse to hate or lash out at any person, any being. That would be something I would be regretting in my life. I'm a snowflake, who is sensitive, emotional, and cannot argue against other peoples opinions. I am still a youngster in my heart and mindset to hate someone. The truth I believe, it was for ending this arguing, stop putting others be confused, scared, and bickering with one another. To make people look put their own differences aside. Cooperative, empathize, and be there for each other. Sometimes, I find telling the truth as no more argument, bickering with each other, and as a last defense to empathize, peace, and look out for each other. That's how I view telling the truth.

      Yes. I can defend myself. I don't want to be pinned down to the ground. If I can challenge a thief, criminal, or stalker. I will try to defend if peaceful resolutions fail. I would try my best to fight back, and shoo them away. If I fail at challenging or defeat a stalker, I will do my best to hide away, making sure the stalker doesn't catch me off guard. If I got caught, I will do my best to run, run away fast as I can. Since I feel and behave like a kid. The mindset of a child and baby who views the world as childish escapism, rose tinted, shy, timid, curiosity, creativity, I complain a bit, sometimes a crybaby, I panic at times, have spatial awareness, and can't handle too much force and pressure.

      If I got stalked. And failed to defeat or shoo away against a thief, robber, or stalker. By being pinned down to the ground. As in getting stomped down very slowly and very soft. I am sensitive to very soft attacks. I can handle hits like that. I do have bravery yet, I feel scared as well. In my child and babylike mindset.

    Is eloping a common autistic behavior?

    • @7Aheadfamily
      @7Aheadfamily  10 місяців тому +3

      Yes. It's common for an Autistic child to wander or bolt away from a safe place. Currently, 49% of Autistic people will Elope.

    • @JonBrase
      @JonBrase 10 місяців тому +1

      TBH, I'm not sure it's not a common behavior of human children in general, but non-verbal autistic children can't announce where they want to go, can't answer "where have you been, young man?", and it's harder to explain to them why they shouldn't just leave whenever they want (plus, if they're emotionally disregulated they may just bolt in panic).

    Oh my, the way you make it seem like Ezra has eloped alot & thats not good & it happens 2 everyone but hopefully its not a regular thing. My tip is not 2 rely on siblings who really are still kids as well 2 be totally responsible 4 there autistic sibling. Its not there job & they want enjoy themsel es as well..
