Rarely-heard Weddell Seal Sounds in Antarctica

- This clip includes rarely-heard, really inorganic underwater sounds of the Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) swimming below the ice in Antarctica.
From Werner Herzog's 2007 documentary, "Encounters at the End of the World." Film-maker Werner Herzog travels to the McMurdo Station in Antarctica, looking to capture the continent's beauty and investigate the characters living there.
This video has proper, synced subtitles!
I thank Ultimate Outsider ( / @outsidersupreme ) for allowing me to also upload a copy of this beautiful sounds.
I do not hold the copyright to These images and sounds. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини

I laughed way too hard at this comment😂
seals: living their life
humans: COOOL
any animal just doing their thing. scientists: WOAAAAAHHHH
A healthy sense of wonder at everything in the natural world enriches our life and is also necessary in order to get people to care enough to work to save it.
my stomach does that sometimes
Mine too 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂
Y'all stank
I didn't realize the sound mixer for the original Doctor Who was a seal.
Pcm979 Very much so! I couldn't velieve it. It has to be where they got the sounds for the Tardis!
She's right it sounds like Pink Floyd type Effect.
Weddell seals on land/ice: bouncy fat sausages talking about "Egg! EGG! EEEEEEEEEGG!" and "Fibsh..."
Weddell seals in water: fast-swimming torpedoes hunting for fish up to 2 ms. long while playing Prog and Synthpop!
And hunting up to 2500 feet--or is it meters?--below the ocean's surface.
@@mh605 600 to probably around 1,000 mt.s, which is about 2,500 ft.s; and holding their breathe for up to one hour, putting them just below the levels of sperm and beaked whales and approaching those of elephant seals - Which is absolutely amazing, despite having became a meme because of one of them screaming "EEEEEEEGG!" in front of a camera!
@@TenorCantusFirmus It is amazing! Imagine the water pressure down there and the fact that it's pretty dark.
@@mh605 They use in fact their whiskers to detect preys.
The fact they can withstand such high pressure is all the way more extraordinary given they apparently look so goofy and funny, but just they're hiding their aces way up to their sleeves...
Antarctakkis ... the ice must flow.
He who controls the Chonk controls the Thicciverse!
aliens in antartica
If you give a seal a synthesizer
I am way to high for this
They are talking about eggs and fibsh to liggk
*sneeze*
1:34 Start of a horror movie
Horror movies copied them
Or the scene in “Family Guy” in which Chester the Cheetah is parodied (I have seen clips and nothing more than clips of “Family Guy”).
This is terrifying! They sound just like the Warpers from Subnautica 😨
Bro… just imagine hearing this while diving 😵
I would have watched that last listening part for a few hours on repeat.
It definitely sounds like movie or game sound effects.
Love this.

i don't know just how to understand it. god is a dj.
It sounds like theyre whistling by rattling their vocal cords

Where can i get those patches at for my Roland?
Wow
I was telling my wife I would love go to Antarctica with explosives and microphone recorders and just blow up ice for the crazy sounds...
Just have to find a spot with no animals and a lot of ice.
KORG needs to sample these
I wonder how they make all those sounds without releasing any air. Somehow they're making the sounds within their own heads?
They probably are using their windpipe as a resonator and then water as a transmitter and amplifier.
@@TenorCantusFirmus My point was that they're not expelling any air. They need to hold their breaths. So they must be making the sounds within their heads, not using a voice box which requires air to be flowing over it to make a sound.
You can sort of make strange squealing sounds by sucking air through your teeth. Like calling a cat but slower and with more saliva. Maybe they do something like that underwater.
@@annacarlin3414 Maybe! Thanks.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'd like Roger Waters to make a song using the Weddell seal call to raise awareness for seal preservation etc
It sounds like ice cracking
Hello Henkjoost ! I don't know if you will ever see my comment but I was wondering how you managed to get thoses sounds and if you know any websites or organization that has sounds similars to this one.
Anyway, I hope you see my message,
nice evening !

I was expecting eggs seal
They should of nicknamed it the Zimmerman Seal, named after Joel Zimmerman aka Deadmau5. Their calls sound like those electric effects from his music.
I guess you never listened to flashcore (la peste for example)
more appropriate would be someone like robert moog...
