    This is such an important video really nicely done - and much needed I think! So many people see my cockatiel (Orville) and immediately go 'oh i want one!' when they don't realise just what a huge life change it is and what it fully entails to have a bird. Despite using air purifiers, I now have a chronic cough from all the dust. My hands are constantly scratched up from his nails and occasional nips. I am constantly wearing an old shirt at home due to all the poops. Because it is just me and him in the flat, I spend most of my time at home so he doesn't get lonely (this works for me as due to disability I am house-bound a lot of the time anyway). But I love him and it is all of course worth it to me!

      Even with our purifier, we try and have to window open for a little while during the day (when all the birds are safely in their cages of course) to flush through some of the dust!
      Even with all of the lifestyle changes, we love them dearly 🥰

    Great video, you forgot to mention that Cockteils have an in built personality disorder. One moment they want nothing to do with you then in the same breath you become the best thing in the world and they won't leave your side! Or is that just my two? lol

    Channels like this are incredible to really give people proper info before taking in a bird because so many are in bad homes kept in cages which makes me so extremely mad and so many re home or dump at shelters and it’s heartbreaking they didn’t ask for this no animal does so thank you for this video

    I might one day get a cockatiel. All of these things I kind of expected, and is something that I've dealt with in some way or another. I've loved animals all my life; spent a large portion of my childhood at my grandma's and she had 4 animals! Lots of noise and mess! Had many scratches as a child lmao. I really want to volunteer at a rescue shelter as well.
    I had wanted a pet of my own for YEARS (stopped by renting limitations, family not being at home enough, etc.) and in mid 2020, a friend had rescued some kittens and one of them was this loud, rambunctious little boy who was double the size of the rest of the litter!
    I went back to my dad and I was like "DAD THAT'S IT, WE'RE GETTING A KITTEN!"
    It was like the stars had aligned; the place we rented at allowed pets, and Dad's work had become much more flexible post-lockdown. My cat 'Spot' is almost 3 now and he is the cutest, noisiest, hungriest, messiest and most destructive cat I have ever dealt with. A few antique things passed down from my grandparents have been destroyed because of him haha. But I wouldn't trade him for the world. My dad, who initially disliked cats, now snuggles and has full on conversations with the cat.
    I've always been interested in having specifically dogs, cats and birds as pets, because I'm way more motivated to look after an animal that I can physically interact with. Social animals are my jam lmao. I struggle with anything that has to be kept in a tank at all times. I might one day get two birds, it isn't really in the cards right now and I'm not prepared to take one in; I'd need to move out first. Although noise, mess, expenses, are all cons that I'm completely fine with, heck the social aspect is a pro for me! And from what I've seen over the past few years, cockatiels are beautiful animals that should be given the love and respect that they deserve (and no, I would never put my cat in the same room as a bird, heck for similar reasons I don't let my cat outside unsupervised, due to the destruction of native animals thanks to cats. I live in Australia for context)

    Awesome video Sophie! We do need to talk about the inner dinosaur though and the fact that they will nibble/bite to give you their opinion, I think a lot of people think that parrots are being naughty or bad when they use their beaks, I really wish people would research properly before getting such a, I’m trying to think of the right word....multi-layered pet. I personally love every moment with my two but I waited for 10 years because I was at college and then I used to be away from home at conventions a lot. I had to wait until I was at the right time in my life.

    Great video, I've never liked the idea of owning a pet in general, but my neighbours recently got a cockatiel and they put it's cage on their balcony, they haven't taken it out of the cage since they got it (about a week) and they barely give it any attention. I've never taken care of a parrot (or any bird really) so I didn't know how it all works, but the fact that they keep it in the cage all day every day (sometimes in the scorching sun with minimal shade) just didn't sit right. I decided to look it up on YT and this vid showed up. So yeah idk what I should do since I don't know these ppl and I've never talked to them and I feel like it would be weird to just ring on their bell and tell them to take care of that poor thing. But again, great video, very informative!

    they are not as noisy as Hahns Macaw, i am downgrading from macaw to this. Had two macaws male and female and they drove me nuts with their screaming which turns sometimes into talking. you were spot on with everything you said but i noticed with my macaw when i had the male first it was very nice he let me touch him and we were fully bonded but when i brought the female in they live together and they only come on my shoulders and not touching is allowed. so the other advise i would suggest is don't bring a companion if you are expecting to play with your bird all the time.

    How often should i take my cockatiel for the vet? My pet cockatiel, Blanca, is 8 years old now and she's only ever been to the vet once. I take the best care of her as i can-- changing food and water everyday, cleaning her cage every week, and not clipping her wings so she can fly and stretch. I give her dried herbs and veggies, along side calcium, cuttlebone, and molting conditioner(?). She also has a large cage, big enough for her wingspan so she can spread her wings.
    With that being said, she has only ever been to the vet once.. about 5 years ago. Before or after the vet, she seems perfectly fine and has never had any injures or complications.
    Unfortunately, as you said, an avian vet is very expensive and we don't have one near by. I don't know if this is okay or not, despite me trying my absolute BEST to keep her healthy and happy.
    Should i still be doing check-ups? I worry that a long car drive to a vet for her, might be more stress inducing then it should be and it might harm her.
    (also.. is it normal for her to be so antisocial? i tried to pair her with a male, and another female cockatiel, but it always ended with her biting them to the point of blood, and me having to sadly return the beautiful birds. though she isnt aggressive.. she interacts well with cats and dogs, though she does hiss. she hisses at me, and anyone, but is never aggressive. when she "bites", its more like she angerly rubs her beak on you...)
    (also, also.. she hates toys! i try to give her fun toys, but she hates them all. wood, paper.. anything. it has to be a very specific of thin paper that she rips up and spits out, otherwise she never plays.)

    They're very mischievous and will bite and shred anything they can get their little beaks on. My older cockatiel will know when he's done something wrong and gets upset when we call him out on it. Using a soft and gentle voice will probably be your best bet to gaining and maintaining their trust. They can pick up on your energy, so if you can remain calm and peaceful, it will help them wind down and ease their stress.

    Hi Sophie, I have two female cocateils. One is around 1 and a half month old and the other is 8 months old. We have made our 8 by 8 ft balcony into an aviary. The older one shouts a lot , I guess she keeps responding to the sounds of other parrots and birds that are residing in the trees all around our apartment. Now the younger one also has started accompanying her although her noise is feeble for now. We bring them to the balcony at 7 am and the shouting continues till 11 am everyday and they take break for a while and start off again by late afternoon. Please suggest me if there's anything I can do to stop them from screeming as it's a community living and I am afraid someone's going to raise objections. If I cover the balcony with a garden cloth will they stop shouting?

    Hiii I'll be getting a baby cockatiel in summer but because during collage I'm always out 2-3 days a week I've been thinking of getting another friend companion for it. Would it be a good idea to get a baby dove or parrotlet at the same time as the cockatiel so they get used to each other as siblings?
    Each one would have their own cage.
    I know you'll say just get another cockatiel but because I mostly live with my parents they will only allow another one bird that is smaller in size or quieter overall.

    My husband and I decided against getting a cockatiel, despite thinking they’re so cute and have such fun personalities, because we live in an apartment in a densely populated city where buildings are very close together, so we knew the noise would be an issue. However, even though we did thoroughly research, our rescue parrotlet is much louder than most parrotlets, and our budgies mimic his loud screams. 🙂 So I guess all birds are loud pets
    Just good to know easy it is to get evicted from your apartment. Luckily we have very strict anti eviction laws where I live :)

    Cockatiels are relatively quiet parrots, you can't keep noisy parrots in an apartment without your neighbors complaining. Where people get it wrong is thinking there's such a thing as silent parrots. Birds are just loud animals, it's their nature, but some are much more noisy than others. If you want a quiet pet don't get a parrot, they are only quiet when they sleep.

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  2 роки тому +1

      They are definitely quiet compared to others, but sometimes I can hear them two floors down and when I’m coming up the stairs to my apartment 😂 but yes all birds will make noise everyday! It’s not necessarily screaming, but chatting, whistling, singing etc! And you are right, the only time we get peace and quiet is when it’s bedtime 😂 but we love them! 💙

    Not sure about your opinions I have owned cockatiels all my life my birds have always been quiet o think because you have pairs they feed off each other. Mine were not too messy at all. Poops take a cockatiels poop any day over a puppy accidents you are overly dramatic they are not expensive cmon cats and dogs are expensive

    • @BirdNerdSophie
      @BirdNerdSophie  9 місяців тому

      I’m not being dramatic at all. And I’ve kept single cockatiels before and it’s just the same. No need to leave a rude comment just because you disagree with me. This video is designed to put people off getting them who aren’t suitable homes. Parrots are the number one most rehomed type of pet in the world because people can’t handle the potential negatives.

    The difficulty in cockatiels isn't in cleaning their cage or picking the right food, the difficulty is actually in understating their personalities as not all of them have the same, dogs and cats too have different personalities but the dogo learns to tolerate your wants and the cat just doesn't need you, while a cockatiel doesn't tolerate everything and it also needs you at the same time so thus why it needs you to study it and learn it, that is essential for your communication with the parrot which is the most important thing in "owning" a parrot, basically the more intelligent the pet is the more difficult is to keep up with it, one example of intelligent "pets" we humans have is Kids.... A cockatoo for example has the same iq of a 5old human...
